The 6 Best Action Cams for Under $200

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 18:00

Action cams like the GoPro are super popular and versatile. But you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a good action cam. In fact, you can buy one for less than $200.

As with any camera, more money equals higher quality. There’s no avoiding that and, to be sure, the top-tier offerings from GoPro are pretty fantastic. But what features do you really need in an action camera? If you’re just looking for durability, 4K, mounting gear, or underwater hardware, then you don’t need to spend more than $200.

There are a variety of budget action cameras on the market, and they all have their ups and downs. Some have high-resolution video but skimp on battery life or durability. Some have waterproof features at the expense of frame rate or Wi-Fi. You have to figure out what features you need from an action camera before shopping for a budget action camera.

But we’ve done most of the work for you. We’ve taken the time to find the best budget action cameras, and to describe their perks and shortcomings. All you need to do is figure out which budget action camera is right for you.

Crosstour 1080P 12 MP Underwater Camera ($40)

The Crosstour is an extremely cheap action camera, but it has a lot of great features. It’s water-resistant, when used with its protective case, and can be sunk to a depth of 98 feet, which is perfect for watersports or diving. It can be controlled remotely from your phone (over Wi-Fi), and it comes with two 1050 mAh batteries, so you can recharge one while using the other. The Crosstour is also packaged with a 2″ LCD screen for on-the-go footage review, and 18 mounting accessories for helmets, bicycles, wrists, and other surfaces.

Surprisingly, the Crosstour doesn’t need to sacrifice photo quality for all of these features. It shoots 1080p video, it has a 12 MP camera, and it’s camera sports a 170-degree wide angle lens. Not bad.

Deal Alert: Grab an Anker PowerWave Wireless Charger for $17

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 17:44
Anker

If the wireless charging craze is starting to get your attention, then now’s the time to take the leap. You can buy a great wireless charger for the price of a USB-C cable with the $17 Anker PowerWave.

Right now, Amazon is selling this fast wireless charger for a 35% discount. Anker is a leader in wireless charging technology, and a deal like this is kind of ludicrous. There are charging cables that cost more than $17, and since this charger works with Android and iOS devices, you’re making out like a bandit.

The PowerWave is clearly a bit different from your typical wireless charger. Instead of sitting flat, the PowerWave acts like a kickstand. You can effectively see your phone’s screen while it’s charging, which makes the PowerWave great for desktops, kitchen counters, and nightstands.

You don’t have to take off your phone case to use the PowerWave unless you’re using an abnormally thick case. And while the PowerWave isn’t Qi or Quick-Charge certified, it still provides a fast charge to your phone. It offers 10-watt high-speed charging for Galaxy phones, and 5-watt charging for iPhones. To put things in perspective a bit, the iPhone X comes with a 5 watt charging cable, and the Galaxy 9 comes with a 15-watt charging cable.

This is a good chance to get your hands on a neat wireless charging stand. But don’t wait too long, because good deals can’t last forever.

How to Find and Back Up Your Steam Screenshots

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 17:24

Steam

Steam has a built-in screenshot function, which uses the F12 key by default to capture a picture of the game you’re playing. It’s a bit complicated to access though since Steam splits them up by game and hides them behind a bunch of folders.

Where Are My Steam Screenshots?

We’re using Windows for our example here. Linux and macOS work much the same way but have different folder names.

Steam stores its screenshots in the following folder on your Windows PC:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\{Your Steam ID}\760\remote\{The Game's ID}\screenshots

On Linux, it’s at:

~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/{Your Steam ID}/760/remote/{The Game's ID}/screenshots

And on Mac, it’s at:

Users/{username}/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/{Your Steam ID}/760/remote/{The Game's ID}/screenshots

The problem is it’s split up by game, and you probably aren’t sure which game “252490” is.

It’s much easier to access a game’s screenshots by right-clicking the game in your Library and clicking “View Screenshots” in the dropdown menu.

Deal Alert: Grab a First-Gen Echo Show for Just $100 from Woot

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 17:08

Alexa doesn’t have a face, but I imagine it would be something like the Echo Show if she did. A digital face that can not just tell you stuff, but show you too. And you can grab one for $100 today.

Woot is offering the first generation Echo Show (in black or white)—which has a larger base and slightly smaller screen than the newer version—for a single, solitary Benjamin. You can use your new toy to call friends using the included camera, control your smarthome, and pretty much anything else Alexa is capable of.

This model Show packs a 7-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a pair of 2-inch speakers. An Intel Atom processor powers the thing.

But the best part is that this comes with a full one-year warranty from Amazon. Woot generally sells refurbished stuff, so it just comes with Woot’s much more limited warranty. A full year from Amazon for a now-discontinued gadget is solid. Hit the button to buy.

Deal Alert: 12″ MacBook for $400 Off from B&H

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 16:56

If you’ve been sitting on the idea of picking up a new MacBook but aren’t into the idea of ponying up all them dollars, B&H has a solid deal for you today. You can grab a mid-2017 12″ Macbook for just $800.

Granted this is a base-model spec Macbook—it packs a 1.2 GHz Core m3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. Not a speed demon by any means, but macOS is incredibly efficient, so it should still run butter smooth on this hardware, especially for those who don’t really require a lot from their computer in the first place.

Otherwise, you should be aware that this deal is only good for the Gold or Rose Gold models, so if you were hoping for Silver or Space Gray, you’re out of luck—you’ll shell out an extra $400 smackaroos to get a different coat of paint (so to speak).

But if you’re cool with that, you can hit the button below to scoop one up. Better hurry though, this deal ends in 14 hours (at the time of writing).

How to Validate and Remove Fonts on a Mac

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 16:00

The humble font isn’t as humble as you might think, especially on a Mac. Fonts are more like plug-ins than you’d imagine, and because they’re loaded by macOS and the apps that run on it, a bad font can have some unexpected consequences.

Those consequences can range from the relatively benign, like some characters being displayed incorrectly, to something more annoying, like apps refusing to load or functions not working quite as they used to. Faulty fonts are rarely the cause of macOS system problems, but if you’re experiencing issues that don’t make a great deal of sense, checking out your fonts is a great first troubleshooting step to take.

Thankfully, Apple includes a tool for installing, validating and generally troubleshooting fonts with each Mac. The next time your Mac is misbehaving, and you’re out of ideas, validating your fonts is a good troubleshooting step.

How to Validate Fonts on a Mac

To begin, open the Font Book app. You’ll find it in your Applications folder. (Open Finder and click Go > Applications to open the folder.) Once open, select all of your fonts by clicking one and pressing Cmd+A.

Right-click one of the fonts and click “Validate Fonts.”

Once the validation is complete, a new window will appear confirming whether any of your faults are damaged. A green icon indicates they’re fine, a yellow icon indicates there are warnings about the font, and a red icon indicates validation failed.

LG gram 17 Review: The Lightest 17-inch Laptop Around

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 15:00

LG

Ultralight laptops are nothing new, but it’s unheard of to find a 17-inch laptop this light. If you want a spacious screen and a laptop that’s effortless to lug around it’s tough to beat the LG gram 17.

One of the more unique laptop lineups of the last few years is LG’s gram series which encompasses a range of ultralight laptops. The gram laptops offer high-end internals, great battery life, and—true to their name—the lightest possible weight LG can manage. Previous years have seen 13-, 14-, and 15-inch models, but LG unveiled the 17-inch variant in 2018.

What makes the 17-inch variant remarkable is that it weighs in at 2.95 pounds. To put that in perspective, Dell’s much-loved (and tiny) Dell XPS 13—one of the top-rated lightweight laptops around—weighs 2.65 pounds. For a scant 0.3 pound increase, the gram 17 gives you a radically bigger screen and a spacious keyboard.

I recently purchased the LG gram 17 and have been using it as my sole computer for a month. It marries a lot of what I’ve been desiring in a computer: a giant screen (large enough that I don’t even bother with an external monitor anymore), enough power for some of the heavier tasks I use a computer for, and great battery life. More than anything else though, the lightweight makes make it super easy to keep in my backpack without straining myself, and it makes it a joy to get the laptop out of my bag and start working.

Design: Plain, But Serviceable Left side ports: power, USB-A 3.1 Gen 1, HDMI and Thunderbolt 3

The LG gram 17 is an unassuming laptop, with the light gray exterior letting it blend into most coffee shops and libraries. The left side of the laptop houses a barrel plug charging port, a USB-A 3.1 Gen 1 port, an HDMI port, and a Thunderbolt 3 port that can also be used for charging. I would have gladly done away with the barrel charging and HDMI ports in exchange for more Thunderbolt 3—or even USB-C 3.1—ports, but alas.

The right side includes a Kensington lock slot, two USB-A 3.1 Gen 1 ports, a 3.5mm headphone and microphone jack, and a micro-SD slot. Included in the box is a USB-C-to-Ethernet dongle, though this only goes up to 100Mbps.

The display is a 16×10 aspect ratio unit, with a resolution of 2560×1600. This is about a 2K resolution, and I think it’s the sweet spot for what LG wanted to achieve: text and images are plenty sharp, but with less cost and power consumption than a 4K panel. Viewing angles are great, and there isn’t much glare under bright lights.

The webcam leaves a lot to be desired

The webcam is above the screen, as it should be. The webcam doesn’t offer Windows Hello authentication, but more of that in a moment. The webcam’s resolution is disappointing at only 720P, so you may want to use an external camera for your video conferences.

Heading down from the screen and webcam you’ll find the keyboard and trackpad, and I love the layout LG included here. The keys are well spaced, and there’s ample space for the number pad. The arrows keys aren’t jammed into other symbols, so it’s easy to feel those out when I need to navigate around a document. There are two levels of backlighting (plus off), and I didn’t see any issues with the lighting being uneven. The inclusion of the number pad means the trackpad isn’t centered below the letter keys, but I adjusted quickly enough.

The keyboard and trackpad deck

How to Use VLOOKUP on a Range of Values

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 15:00

VLOOKUP is one of Excel’s most well-known functions. You’ll typically use it to look up exact matches, such as the ID of products or customers, but in this article, we’ll explore how to use VLOOKUP with a range of values.

Example One: Using VLOOKUP to Assign Letter Grades to Exam Scores

As an example, say we have a list of exam scores, and we want to assign a grade to each score. In our table, column A shows the actual exam scores and column B will be used to show the letter grades we calculate. We’ve also created a table off to the right (the D and E columns) that show the score necessary to achieve each letter grade.

With VLOOKUP, we can use the range values in column D to assign the letter grades in column E to all the actual exam scores.

The VLOOKUP Formula

Before we get into applying the formula to our example, let’s have a quick reminder of the VLOOKUP syntax:

=VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, range_lookup)

In that formula, the variables work like this:

  • lookup_value: This is the value for which you are looking. For us, this is the score in column A, starting with cell A2.
  • table_array: This is often referred to unofficially as the lookup table. For us, this is the table containing the scores and associated grades ( range D2:E7).
  • col_index_num: This is the column number where the results will be placed. In our example, this is column B, but since the VLOOKUP command requires a number, it’s column 2.
  • range_lookup> This is a logical value question, so the answer is either true or false. Are you performing a range lookup? For us, the answer is yes (or “TRUE” in VLOOKUP terms).

The completed formula for our example is shown below:

=VLOOKUP(A2,$D$2:$E$7,2,TRUE)

How (and Why) to Run Portable Versions of Windows

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 13:40

If you frequently travel but don’t want to lug a laptop, or regularly work with computers missing applications you need you should consider portable Windows. With portable Windows, you have less to carry, and all your preferences come with you.

Why You Might Want Portable Windows CatwalkPhotos/Shutterstock

Traveling is a pain, especially when flying. You have limited carry-ons, and your suitcases can add to the cost of flying. The more you take, the more you’ll regret traveling at all, especially if you then need to walk far distances. Even if you don’t commute long distances regularly if you consistently work with different computers as part of your career, you may find yourself often without the tools you need and sometimes the inability to change preferences that help your workflow.

You can solve all of this by putting Windows on a USB flash drive. By creating a portable copy of Windows and then booting to that USB drive, you will have your personal computer with your applications, preferences, and passwords all in a device less than a pound and small enough to fit in your pocket.

Unfortunately, the official “Windows To Go” feature from Microsoft is only for Windows Enterprise and requires a certified USB flash drive (which are expensive). We’ve detailed a method around this, but it’s complicated and involves command line work. You can use Portable VirtualBox, but that requires installing VM software and an OS to run from.

If you want an alternative with less overhead, Rufus and WinToUSB are free for most cases and easy to use with one catch. With WinToUSB you’ll need to pay if you want to install Windows 10 1809—that’s the October 2018 Update. Rufus doesn’t offer the option to install 1809 at all. Alternatively, you can download Windows 1803 using the Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool. Just download and run the program, pick Windows 10 and then choose the appropriate Windows 10 1803 option.

Of the two, Rufus edges out as the better option since you don’t have to pay for compatibility with both modern UEFI and legacy computers. You’ll want this to work with both and WinToUSB charges for that feature.

What You’ll Need to Get Started

For this process to work, you’re going to need a few items:

Option 1: Install Windows on a USB Drive with Rufus

To start, you’ll need to download Rufus and launch it. Rufus is a portable app, so it doesn’t require installation.

How to Share Things from OneDrive

Tue, 03/05/2019 - 22:00

If you’ve got an Office 365 account (free or paid), then you’ve got OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage app. Cloud storage is great for sharing files with other people, so let’s see how it works in OneDrive.

You can share OneDrive files from either the OneDrive folder on your computer (the “client interface”), or the Office 365 web interface, or the OneDrive mobile app. Which method is best depends on your situation and preference, but Microsoft is pushing its cloud offerings strongly, and that prioritization shows in the OneDrive interface. Not to be too blunt about it, but the Office 365 web interface and OneDrive app are much prettier and more refined than the client interface. The client interface also has at least seven different ways of sharing, some of which are hangovers from ways of sharing things in older versions of Windows. For those reasons, we’ll concentrate here on sharing through the OneDrive app and OneDrive web interface.

Sharing (and Unsharing) a File Through the Mobile OneDrive App

Microsoft has obviously put some effort into its OneDrive app because the sharing option is simple and comprehensive. We’ll be using the Android app for our examples here, but the iOS app is similar. We’ll point out when there are significant differences.

To share a file (or folder), tap the three dots next to it.

Tap “Share” from the menu that appears.

This opens the sharing options. By default, OneDrive allows the people you share a file with to edit that file. You can change that to view-only by tapping the arrow next to “Can edit” and changing it to “Can view” instead. You also can “Set Expiry Date,” which means that the file will only be shared for a specific period.

How to Control Your Roku Device with Amazon Alexa

Tue, 03/05/2019 - 19:52

Josh Hendrickson

You can already voice control Roku with the proper remote or with Google Assistant. But if you have an Echo, you were out of luck. A new skill from Roku changes that by bringing Alexa voice control to your devices.

Roku is the best streaming device for the person who wants to watch everything. With Roku, you can watch movies and tv shows from nearly every storefront, whether that be Amazon, Google, Netflix, or your favorite channels like CBS, NBC, or PBS. It has an easy to use interface and even offers 4K support at pretty low prices.

But if you wanted to control your Roku with your voice, you needed to either have a Roku remote with a microphone built in or Google assistant. Anyone in the Alexa camp was left out. Now Roku is addressing that with a new Alexa skill. After installing the skill, you’ll be able to control any Roku device or TV running Roku OS 8.2 or higher. You can launch movies, apps, and if your TV has Roku, you can even control functions like Volume or switch inputs.

Similar to Google Assistant, voice commands need to use Roku for the name, i.e. tell Roku to open Hulu or open Hulu on Roku. And unfortunately, you can’t control Netflix with voice commands.

How To Set Up The Roku Alexa Skill

Getting started is just installing any other Alexa skill. Open the Alexa app, and tap on the hamburger menu in the top left corner.

Tap “Skills & Games.”

Tap the magnifying glass in the upper right corner and do a search for Roku.

August’s New ‘View’ Doorbell Camera Installs with No Wires

Tue, 03/05/2019 - 18:40
August

If you’re looking to upgrade your smarthome with a video doorbell, you’ve probably been dreading the re-wiring that’s necessary for power and AV cables. August has a solution: its new View doorbell cam, available on March 28th for $230.

Most smarthome tech of this kind assumes a semi-permanent installation, but the August View uses a swappable 6500 mAh battery to power its Wi-Fi connection and camera. The company makes no claims as to battery life, but assuming it’s only drawing full power when the camera detects motion or a ring, that should last a few weeks at least. And that wireless setup allows it to mount to a standard base plate.

The View works with August’s existing smart locks, which can similarly mount to a basic internal lock. Naturally, the connected app can open an August lock right from the video view. The system works with both Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant smarthome platforms, but Apple Homekit support is notably absent.

The View can stream video anywhere at up to 1920 x 1440 resolution, with night vision and digital zoom supported as well. Interchangeable brass faceplates let you match your door’s existing fixtures, and IPX5 water resistance should keep it safe even in heavy rain or an extended freeze.

The Best Nightlight Projectors for Children

Tue, 03/05/2019 - 18:15

Romrodphoto

It’s important to reassure your child before they go to bed. Night time can be scary. It’s dark, silent, and far from fun. That’s where the right nightlight projector can help significantly in making bedtimes fun and safe for all ages. We’ve checked out the best nightlight projectors for your child.

Reassurance is a pretty personal thing so we’ve covered a variety of different projectors, each offering something slightly different than the last. That way, there’s something for every child. Whether they love dinosaurs, plushies, or some soothing white noise, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s our pick of the nightlight projectors currently out there.

Best For Longevity: Cloud b Twilight Turtle Nightlight ($31) Cloud b

In need of a durable nightlight projector that lasts years upon years? Buy the Cloud b Twilight Turtle Nightlight. ReviewGeek’s editor, Jason Fitzpatrick bought it 10 years ago for his daughter, and not only did it survive her childhood in nearly mint-condition, it’s still going strong.

The cute turtle works for any age group with a projection of a starry night sky onto the walls and ceiling of the child’s bedroom. There are three soothing color options, including blue, green, and amber so it creates a really nice atmosphere. A 45-minute timer ensures there’s complete darkness during a child’s deep sleep, so there’s no risk of disruption.

Buy on Amazon Best Plush Nightlight: Summer Infant Slumber Buddies Projection ($15) Summer Infant

Plush nightlights shouldn’t really be placed in the cot or bed with your little one, but it’s still useful to have a nightlight projector that your child can cuddle. That way, in the daytime, you can introduce it to them, they can hug it and get to know it, before placing it in their room for the night. The extraordinarily cute Summer Infant Slumber Buddies Projection is ideal for this.

It plays 5 meditative songs and natural sounds, as well as projects a starry sky above for your child to look at. You can choose from a rhythmic light show or narrow things down to individual colors. Timing options cover 15, 30, and 45-minute intervals too, so you can tweak things appropriately depending on how quickly your child falls asleep.

Buy on Amazon Best Modern Twist: SleepyMe ($40) SleepyMe

SleepyMe is cute in a fairly modern looking sort of way. It’s a sleepy-looking creature that we think is a chick half covered by an eggshell. It plays 10 different melodies, with a choice of lullabies (and Somewhere Over the Rainbow), nature sounds, as well as heartbeats and white noise sounds. There’s the option to play these in sequence or on repeat.

The gadget also projects stars into the sky with a choice of three colors or a mixture of all three. It turns off automatically after 30 minutes so there’s little chance of your child being disturbed. It doesn’t look as traditionally cute as a plush based nightlight projector, but it’s ideal if aesthetics are important to you.

Gamer Alert: The PlayStation Classic Is Down to Just $40

Tue, 03/05/2019 - 17:48
Walmart

Is the PlayStation Classic percolating in the back of your mind? Can you no longer resist the nostalgia machine? Well, it’s down to just $40. You might as well buy it.

The PlayStation Classic initially hit shelves with a $100 price tag. And even though people can’t seem to stop talking about this throwback console, it hasn’t done too well. Every month, retailers slash the PlayStation Classic’s price by about $10 or $20 dollars.

Right now, Walmart is selling the PlayStation Classic for just $40. That’s less than half the retail price, and it’s hard to imagine the Classic getting any cheaper. At this point, you might as well just buy the dang thing.

Honestly, the PlayStation Classic is a good throwback console. Its poor sales reflect a lack of public interest, not a lack of quality. Sony just can’t cash in on nostalgia the way that Nintendo can.

The console is bundled with 20 classic games (at $40, that’s $2 per game), two retro Sony controllers, a “virtual memory card” (for games like Metal Gear), and an HDMI cable. It’s designed to look just like the original PlayStation, but it’s 45% smaller.

Here are the games that come with the PlayStation Classic:

  • Final Fantasy Vll
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Tekken 3
  • Wild Arms
  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Mr. Driller
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee®
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil™ Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Persona
  • Super Puzzle Fighter ll Turbo®

How to Set Up Assistant Routines in Google Clock on Android

Tue, 03/05/2019 - 17:24

If your Android phone is your alarm clock, you can make it a lot smarter. Google’s Clock app now has Google Assistant-powered routines that can control your smarthome or play audio of choice when you wake up in the morning.

Get Routines Without A Google Home

Perhaps the most significant problem with alarms is that they are easy to snooze—multiple times. And before you know it, you’re running late, skipping breakfast, and hoping for a string of green lights so you won’t be late for work for the fifth day this week.

Smarthome routines can help with that problem; in fact, automation is still the real superpower of smarthomes. With a morning routine, a voice assistant can greet you, turn on the lights, raise the shades, and start reading the news, or playing music. Even if you snooze the alarm, the blaring lights and music will help you wake up.

But if you don’t own a Google Home, Lenovo Smart Clock, or Amazon Echo—or you don’t want such a device in your bedroom—then you’ll lose out on any of the audio portions of the routine. If you’re on Android, you can run routines without a Google Home in your bedroom thanks to an update in the Google Clock’s alarm feature. And it’s fairly straightforward to use.

Unfortunately, this feature is part of the Google Clock app, which isn’t available on the iPhone. You need an Android phone to do this.

How to Add Routines to Your Google Clock Alarms

To add a routine, open the Google Clock app and tap “Alarms” at the top of the screen.

If you have an existing alarm you’d like to use, tap its down arrow. Otherwise, tap the plus symbol to create a new alarm.

Deal Alert: Grab the Nokia 9 Pureview for $100 off and a Free Battery ($599)

Tue, 03/05/2019 - 16:44
Nokia

In case you missed it, the Nokia 9 Pureview is a phone with five 12 MP cameras. At $599, it was already going for $100 off, but with this deal, you get a free battery pack too.

The Nokia 9 Pureview is an oddity. From the front, it looks like a pretty standard Android phone from a year or two ago. It features a slab design, thin side bezels, thick bezels at the top and bottom (no notch or punch hold), standard high-resolution screen, and thankfully stock android.

Even the other specs are fairly run of the mill, with a Snapdragon 845 processor from last year, 6 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. The in-display fingerprint sensor is the lone unusual front-facing feature.

But turn the phone over, and a spider-eye camera setup confronts you ending all sense of sameness. The Nokia 9 Pureview’s claim to fame is a unique setup of five 12 MP cameras that all work together to take a single picture. HMD (the company behind Nokia phones) explains that this a camera system designed for experienced photographers, rather than aiming at bringing better photos to the average users.

For a limited time, HMD announced it would sell the phone for $100 off, bringing the price down to $599. But B&H photo is taking that deal a step further, and tossing in a free Mophie portable battery pack. If you sincerely want to make this a go-to camera on all your travels, having a spare battery to recharge it is a no-brainer.

How to Automatically Generate Charts in Google Sheets

Tue, 03/05/2019 - 16:00

Google Sheets lets you generate charts automatically to create a visually appealing way to convey information. Using charts is a great way to help people retain data a lot easier than looking at a bunch of numbers.

Google Sheets gives you a wide variety of free graphs from which to choose. Whether you want to use a pie chart or something a little more complicated like a radar chart, you won’t be disappointed with the options available.

The first thing you need to do is fire up your Google Sheets homepage and open a new or existing spreadsheet.

If you just opened a new spreadsheet, now would be a good time to insert some data into the cells. After that, click “Insert” and then “Chart.”

From the drop-down list, click the type of chart you want to add. In this example, we are going to use a smooth line chart, but you can choose from 30 different types of charts.

The Best Web-Based Live TV Service for You

Tue, 03/05/2019 - 15:00

Samsung/NBC

Things are getting exciting for cord-cutters, especially in the United States. There’s never been more competition, or more options, for users who want to get their live TV over the web. That includes live sports and local TV channels in most markets.

But with all that competition, it can be hard to know which service is the best for you. That’s where we come in. We’ve tested all of the major offerings: YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV NOW, PlayStation Vue, and Sling, and broken down which ones excel in which areas.

We should note that, of course, everyone’s tastes will differ. These services cover a lot of the same channels, but if one offers a channel you can’t live without and the other doesn’t, obviously you shouldn’t take our recommendation and miss out on the shows you want to watch.

Also, be aware that some services don’t have contracts with every local ABC, CBS, Fox, and/or NBC affiliate, and so may not have access to all of your local broadcast channels. The links above all go to the master channel list for each service: use them as a quick aid to your choices.

Luckily the nature of these services is much more consumer-friendly than conventional cable or satellite TV. All of the services in this guide offer free trials for a week or more, and can be cancelled anytime with no punishing contracts or expensive hardware. It’s easy to switch to a different service if you’re unhappy with your first choice—you can even sign up for all of them at the same time, compare them during the free trial period, and cancel all but the one you settle on. And if you’re looking something specifically for a family with kids, be sure to check out our guide to kid-friendly TV services.

But enough preamble: let’s get to the show. Here are our selections for the best live TV services on the web.

The Best Overall Live TV Service: YouTube TV YouTube

At just $40 a month for its single primary package, which includes live local channels and unlimited cloud DVR recording (yes, really unlimited), YouTube TV snags our pick for the best overall card-cutting service. While Sling beats it on price, it’s not nearly so flexible, and its oddball splitting of the low $25 tier will confuse and alienate a lot of users. It helps that YouTube TV also has one of the better user interfaces around, and is available on pretty much every platform you could want it, including Google’s ostensible competitors like Roku, Apple TV, and iPhones.

There are a couple of downsides to YouTube TV. It’s not yet available in every market in the US (and not at all internationally), though it covers the country for something like 90% of prospective users. Google’s original programming is also very lackluster—it tosses in YouTube Red, but that exclusive lineup doesn’t hold a candle to the likes of Hulu. YouTube TV doesn’t include an HBO add-on (though it does have Showtime and Starz), but that content is fairly simple to get on its own.

Even so, for most users who can access it and want a straight-up replacement for cable TV that’s simple and relatively cheap, YouTube TV should be the first place they look.
