Some of the main modules of the International Space Station are nearly a quarter-century old. "That's considered classic for a car," said Bennett Maruca, an astronomer and physicist at the University of Delaware.

So it's little surprise one of the earliest chambers, attached in 2000, has sprung a problematic leak. The leak is in Russia's Zvezda service module, an area connecting the module to a docking port, and it was first detected five years ago. But the rate of leakage has increased in 2024, and in April, NASA revealed it had reached the highest level yet, at three times the leakage observed in 2019. In a recent Inspector General's report, the space agency labeled these cracks and leaks a "top safety risk."

The leaking hull has earned understandable scrutiny from both NASA and the Russian space agency. "NASA and Roscosmos continue to evaluate onboard and ground test data with the primary goal of identifying the root cause, gaining a better understanding of the risk to station operations, and implementing repairs," a spokesperson from Johnson Space Center told Mashable.

The problem exemplifies how NASA is contending with aging but critical space infrastructure: The orbiting laboratory, with a living area larger than a six-bedroom house, is the agency's only way to learn about health impacts to astronauts, develop or test life support systems for future missions, and advance a plethora of space technologies. NASA wants to keep it running until 2030 — but doing so will require constant surveillance and, literally, patching.

"It's an old station, and it has done some amazing things," Don Platt, an associate professor of space systems at Florida Tech, told Mashable.

The space station is actually designed to leak — a little.

That's because it has eight ports for spacecraft, meaning eight hatches that must open and close. So a negligible level of leaking was always expected, because no seal, however tight, is perfect. The only way to eliminate any leakage and preserve finite air would be to weld the openings shut. "But that would be a pretty useless space station," Maruca told Mashable.

The increased leakage rate, however, could be coming from cracks in different parts of the Zvezda service module. Space station personnel are sleuthing for potential culprits. "Cosmonauts aboard the space station have performed inspections of the module’s interior surfaces with an instrument that can detect even the most minor surface blemishes," NASA's spokesperson said, adding "There are several areas of interest identified subject to future Roscosmos inspections." Already, the Russian agency has applied sealant to some cracks, leading to some leak reduction, and for years a Zvezda tunnel hatch has been kept closed as much as possible between dockings, sealing off that section to reduce leakage. (The space agencies do not currently agree on the potential causes of the leak, according to NASA’s ISS Advisory Committee.)

These present leaks are microscopic, which is why NASA has concluded they're not an immediate risk to the structural integrity of the station, nor to astronauts. Unlike in some Hollywood depictions, a small hole in a space station or airplane wall won't result in a rapid and dramatic depressurization event. The air pressure aboard the station is 14.7 psia (pounds per square inch absolute), which is not nearly enough pressure on a small hole (even as wide as an inch across) to, for example, suck a person out of the station and into the vacuum of space.

But valuable, finite air is still being lost. Fortunately, the station orbits Earth, so it's regularly resupplied with oxygen, water, food, clothing, and beyond. The space station's current air loss is similar to the stubborn, but fixable, slow leak we've all experienced in our car tires. "It's a slow leak that allows you to get to the gas station in time," Platt said. "It's not the big hole you get when you run over a sharp piece of metal on a highway."

(Though a crewed deep space mission wouldn't have the luxury of resupply. "If this was a vehicle on its way to Mars, that would be a real problem," he noted.)

The space station isn't just resupplied with oxygen tanks, it also makes oxygen. Using the station's Urine Processor Assembly, astronauts reclaim 87 percent of the water in urine, which in turn is used to create oxygen and drinking water. As astronauts like to say, "Yesterday's coffee becomes tomorrow's coffee." A process called "electrolysis" — which uses an electric current to separate oxygen and hydrogen in water — then recycles oxygen aboard the station. (What's more, space station oxygen is even produced from exhaled carbon dioxide.)

What if, however, the current leaks in the Zvezda module grow dangerous, and cannot be repaired? The station is composed of different capsules that can be isolated. "Much like a submarine, you can close off sections of it," Platt said.

We'll see how these problematic leaks play out in the coming year, and beyond. The aging space station is vulnerable to a host of potential issues, such as orbital debris (which has previously forced the station to move), 1.5 million lines of software code operating on 44 computers, and generally old parts. NASA, Roscosmos, and the astronauts aboard all have good reason to fix this known problem — and ensure it doesn't become worse.

"You always need to have a high level of vigilance when you're flying in space," Platt said.

"I feel like I'm a background character in someone else's story."

So goes the internal monologue of Interior Chinatown protagonist Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang), who works as a waiter in Chinatown. While Willis' musings about his role in life could just be the result of aimless angst, they are actually 100-percent true.

That's because this Chinatown is not what it seems. It's part of the fictional town of Port Harbour, which is the setting of the cop show Black & White. Willis and everyone around him in Chinatown are simply bit players in a larger story. They just don't know it.

That tension between Willis' reality and the reality of Black & White drives Interior Chinatown, which showrunner Charles Yu adapts from his National Book Award-winning novel of the same name. Like the novel, Interior Chinatown dissects Asian representation in media, focusing on tropes and archetypes that often relegate Asian stories to the background. The result, which often takes the form of a spot-on pastiche of police procedurals, is one of the most ambitious, meta shows of the year.

Unknowingly trapped within a police procedural, Willis is a devotee of cop shows himself. But he never thought he could be the hero of one. The way he sees it, someone who looks like him is usually a waiter, a witness, or a victim. Very rarely is a Chinatown resident a winner — unless they're his older brother (Chris Pang), whose skills as "Kung Fu Guy" earned him heroic renown. At least, until his disappearance, which remains unsolved.

But when Wilson witnesses a crime himself, he finds himself inching closer and closer to that coveted hero status. He'll join forces with the eternally cool Detective Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet) in order to solve the crime, only to realize something much larger and stranger is going on in Chinatown — and it may all link back to his brother.

Given that it lifts its name from the formatting of screenplay scene headings, it's a given that Interior Chinatown (or Int. Chinatown) takes a deeply meta approach to media. Its fake intro sequence for Black & White — centered on Black detective Turner (Sullivan Jones) and white detective Green (Lisa Gilroy) — is a nearly one-to-one riff on Law & Order SVU. Scenes involving Turner and Green are bathed in a piercing blue light to denote we're in an episode of Black & White. As soon as they head out, Interior Chinatown reverts to a warmer look.

The ever-changing cinematography — which bears shades of other genre-switching shows like The Afterparty and Kevin Can F**k Himself — isn't the only way Interior Chinatown signals which storytelling mode we're in. Willis tends to be front and center when Turner and Green aren't in the picture. But as soon as they pop up, they become the focus. Willis is either pushed far to the back or rendered completely invisible. Turner and Green will have full discussions while Willis is next to them, all without noticing him once.

Here, and throughout the show, Yu gestures to the ways in which Asian stories are flattened or pushed aside in American media and real life. Willis has to fight his way into the narrative of Black & White after the doors to the police precinct mysteriously shut him — and only him — out. The only way in is to assume stereotypical roles, going from "Generic Asian Man" to "Delivery Man" to "Tech Guy." To live in Black & White's Chinatown is to be an archetype. Embody the "right" one and you may find yourself assimilating.

Willis isn't the only person in Interior Chinatown to struggle with the roles they've been conditioned to inhabit. As the only Asian American detective on the police force, Lana is tokenized as the "Chinatown expert," even though she knows very little about the neighborhood. Willis' friend and fellow waiter Fatty Choi (Ronny Chieng) learns that his anger at white customers can be commodified and celebrated as authenticity by those same customers. Meanwhile, Willis' mother Lily (Diana Lin) hopes to accomplish her dreams of becoming a successful real estate agent, even though everyone around her is doubtful.

In the first five episodes sent to critics, these latter two subplots occasionally threaten to bloat Interior Chinatown and drag focus away from its central mysteries. However, they also do the very opposite of what Black & White does, which is create space for its Asian side characters as more than just props.

That audiences already know the "twist" of Interior Chinatown — that it's all in a TV show — doesn't detract from the show's wild ride. The characters aren't aware that their reality is a curated fantasy, so watching them try to put the pieces together adds an extra layer of fun. Plus, there are more mysteries for the audience to unravel, like what happened to Willis' brother, and what's going on with the mysterious street gang known as the Painted Faces.

Interior Chinatown also finds plenty of fun in satirizing cop shows and the TV landscape at large. Everything from corny detective one-liners to extras' background movements (why are they always moving boxes?) gets sent up.

Between these parodies and its musings on identity, Interior Chinatown already proves that it's a sharply constructed show with a lot to say. But with the help of its dizzying genre switch-ups and some dynamic direction from episode directors like Taika Waititi, Alice Wu (The Half of It), and more, the show jumps into the realm of fearlessly unique, making a place all for itself.

The NYT's latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication's sports coverage. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Amazon's Black Friday event technically doesn't kick off for a few more days (Nov. 21 for your calendars), but there are already some active deals lingering, if you look hard enough. Earlier this year, Google lost a massive antitrust lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Now the tech giant could be forced to sell off Google Chrome, the most popular web browser in the world.

According to sources speaking to Bloomberg, the DOJ reportedly intends to recommend that Google be ordered to sell off its Chrome browser as a remedy in its significant antitrust lawsuit. In said suit, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta found that Google had engaged in anticompetitive practices through its exclusive distribution agreements with other tech companies.

Such agreements ensured its Google search engine was the default option on the vast majority of desktop and mobile devices in the country. Web analytics service StatCounter states that Google currently enjoys 89 percent of the global search engine market share. This number jumps even further to 93 percent when solely looking at mobile devices.

In previous years, Google has paid Apple up to $200 billion per annum to guarantee that it is the default search engine in the latter's Safari web browser. Safari is the pre-installed default browser on every Apple iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Such deals are unlikely to be permitted in the future.

"Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly," Mehta wrote in his August opinion.

Google has said it plans to appeal the ruling.

If Mehta does order Google to divest from Chrome, it would be a massive blow to the tech giant. Chrome commands almost 67 percent of the global web browser market share, as per StatCounter. The second most popular browser is Safari with just 18 percent. 

The loss of its Chrome browser isn't the only painful consequence Google could potentially see from this antitrust crackdown. Bloomberg reports that the DOJ will also request measures regarding Google's Android operating system and artificial intelligence, as well as concerning data licensing requirements.

Specifically, the DOJ will reportedly recommend that Google be ordered to unbundle its Android mobile operating system from its other products, offering it to clients separately from other services such as Google Search and the Google Play store. (Fortunately for the tech giant, the DOJ no longer appears to be pushing for it to sell off Android altogether.) The DOJ will further propose that Google be ordered to provide websites more options for opting out of having their content used by its AI, licence the data from its search engine, and give advertisers more control regarding where their ads appear.

The courts could deem a Chrome selloff unnecessary if such measures are enough to create a more competitive market. If they aren't, then Google may lose Chrome in one of the U.S.' largest antitrust crackdowns in history.

Bloomberg's report follows the DOJ's proposed remedy framework filed in October. Barring Google's appeal, a final ruling in this antitrust case is expected in August next year.

Archive of Our Own (AO3) is down again, leaving countless fan fiction fans bereft of their much-needed escapism for the second time in two days. They are handling it as well as can be expected.

Reports that popular fan fiction platform AO3 was suffering an outage previously poured in on Sunday evening, as thousands of readers suddenly found themselves cut off from their favourite slow burn enemies to lovers coffee shop AUs. Crowdsourced outage tracker Down Detector (which has the same parent company as Mashable) began receiving reports of the outage from around 5.30 p.m. EST / 2.30 p.m. PST.

AO3 soon acknowledged the outage on its official status update X account, stating that they were "looking into some issues that are causing 503 errors for some folks." The issue was resolved within the hour— though not before many readers have took to social media to yearn for their fics, wondering when their beloved AO3 would return from the war.

Now AO3 has gone down yet again, stranding fan fiction fans in bitter reality once more. Reports of the second outage began pouring in to Down Detector from around 7 p.m. EST / 4 p.m. PST today. AO3 hasn't yet acknowledged the outage, though fans have turned to social media for a communal freak out.

Fortunately, it seems that Monday's AO3 outage may also be fixed within the hour, with several users since reporting that their stories have now returned to them.

No other fan fiction platform offers quite the same experience as AO3. However, if you need a quick fan fiction fix to tide you over whenever the popular platform goes down, there are a few other options.
