Adults creators Rebecca Shaw and Ben Kronengold reveal the advice they got from Friends creators
As a hangout sitcom centered on 20-somethings living in New York City, it was inevitable that FX's Adults would be compared to Friends. But Adults creators Rebecca Shaw and Ben Kronengold welcomed these comparisons.
"Ben and I grew up watching Friends. We love that show. We also love Living Single and Seinfeld and Broad City and Girls," Shaw told Mashable as part of our Say More interview series. "We do not pretend to be the first people to do a 20-somethings-living-in-New-York comedy... But I think those kinds of comparisons are unbelievably flattering."
SEE ALSO: 'Adults' review: More than just Gen Z 'Friends'On top of being inspired by Friends and other classic friend group comedies, Shaw and Kronengold actually got the opportunity to speak with Friends creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane before they began shooting Adults, and the veteran showrunners passed on some key wisdom.
"They were unbelievably generous with their time and just had a lot of insight into not just how you write and sustain a show like this, but also how you build an ensemble and create healthy cast patterns, and all of these things that they just did so well," Shaw said.
The Friends creators helped Adults find a new name.In addition to Kauffman and Crane's advice on keeping an ensemble sitcom up and running, the pair also proved instrumental in changing Adults' name. When Kronengold and Shaw pitched the show in 2021, the working title was Snowflakes.
"People were talking about 'special snowflakes' a lot, and there was this idea of, 'What if we sort of reclaim that?'" Shaw said. "Instead of the point being laughing laughing at these kids and being like, 'They're so sensitive,' [we'd be] taking it back and being like, 'Actually, they're tougher than they seem.'"
SEE ALSO: 'Adults' creators Rebecca Shaw and Ben Kronengold react to fan fiction about the showHowever, like much slang, the term "snowflake" began to fall out of fashion, and keeping it as a title threatened to undermine the show's relevance and currency. Plus, Kauffman and Crane admitted they were skeptical of the title.
"When they say that, you better listen," Kronengold said.
Settling on Adults as the new name also had its roots in the conversation with Kauffman and Crane. When Shaw and Kronengold were growing up watching Friends as kids, they saw the show as being about adults. However, Kauffman and Crane told Kronengold and Shaw that they had different perspective as showrunners, viewing it as "a study of young people," Kronengold recalled.
That perspective switch reminded Kronengold and Shaw that while people from their characters' (and their own) generation would be watching the show, there would also be members from other generations — hopefully both older and younger — tuning in.
"We really put ourselves back in the shoes of us watching these shows, feeling like it's not a show about young people, but it's a show about grown-ups. That's where Adults, as generic a name as it is, came from and felt like it clicked into place," Kronengold said.
"And [Adam] Sandler got to Grown Ups first," Shaw joked.

"The new 13-inch MacBook Air is our top budget pick for Apple users and a Mashable Choice Award winner. 'It's powerful, silent, and comes with a couple of much-needed upgrades,' including an upgraded 12MP webcam and support for two external displays, wrote Senior Editor Stan Schroeder. He gave it an overall rating of 4.5/5.
Amazon's $849 deal applies to all colors of the base configuration with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The Sky Blue variant briefly dipped down to an even-cheaper $829 in late June, but I have no trouble endorsing it at its current price: It's such a good deal on a popular new laptop that's already pretty affordable." — Haley Henschel, Senior Shopping Reporter

"If you know you'll mostly use your iPad to watch shows, videos, and read, you should seriously consider the iPad mini. Clocking in at 8.3 inches, this aptly named tablet is easy to hold in your hand for long periods of time, making it an especially great option for someone who wants an e-reader with some versatility (or with vibrant colors). Even though it's not powered by Apple's latest chipset, it doesn't need to be for more casual usage.
For anyone who doesn't need a tablet as powerful as a laptop, this ultraportable choice is well worth considering. And at just $399, the iPad mini is back down to its lowest price ever." — Bethany Allard, Lead Shopping Reporter

"The Amazon Kindle Scribe is the brand's only e-reader that offers note-taking abilities. So if you're an annotator, this is certainly the right e-reader. With a 10.2-inch screen, it has plenty of space for taking notes in the margins in both PDFs and e-books. Plus, the notebook feature allows you to write out pages and pages of writing that convert from handwritten notes to text.
However, keep in mind that among the Kindles we've tested, this is Amazon's slowest performing device.
The Amazon Kindle Scribe is also the most expensive Kindle in Amazon's line-up. But ahead of Prime Day, it does have the biggest savings. Normally $569.97, the Amazon Kindle Scribe Essentials Bundle is $504.97, saving $65 for 11% off." — Samantha Mangino, Shopping Reporter

"This deal's a Prime member exclusive, but it's a good one: the Amazon Echo Buds with ANC are all the way down to $44.99, making them an excellent price for a pair of noise-cancelling earbuds. Admittedly, this drastic of a price drop isn't exactly rare: Just last month, these earbuds received an $85 discount.
These earbuds are a 2021 release, so you won't be getting the latest and greatest tech. Their battery life is just okay at five hours per charge, and their ANC isn't going to be anything mind-blowing. But if you're looking for something that's good enough and at a price that's hard to beat, you'll find it in this deal." — Bethany Allard, Lead Shopping Reporter

"The cheapest 65-inch QLED TV we're clocking at Amazon ahead of Prime Day isn't an Amazon TV. It is still a Fire TV, but oddly enough, it's from Insignia — a Best Buy brand.
If you have trouble picturing the difference between an LED and QLED TV in your head, this is your chance to try an XL QLED out at home without severely overspending. The Insignia QF series has been garnering quite positive customer reviews on picture quality and color vibrancy. At this price, it's probably not going to have the same pop as some of the premium QLEDs out there, but you'll definitely notice the quantum dot difference compared to your old TV, especially during daytime viewing." — Leah Stodart, Senior Shopping Reporter

"We're hesitant to recommend the AirPods Max because of their sky-high price point, but a $69 price cut makes them slightly more palatable — especially if you're already heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem. At the time of writing, all five colorways are marked down to $479.99. Though it's a deal, it's not quite the best we've seen on these headphones — earlier this year, they dropped all the way down to $449.99. If you want to grab a pair ahead of Prime Day, this is a solid price, but waiting another week might up your chances of grabbing them back at their record-low price." — Bethany Allard, Lead Shopping Reporter

"The Galaxy S25+, which launched earlier this year, is just $20 shy of its best price ever ahead of Prime Day — just $919.99 for the 512GB model. While it's not quite as powerful as the S25 Ultra or the latest S25 Edge, it's also a lot easier on your wallet. You'll still get the impressive Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and 12GB of RAM, plus a slightly larger and nicer display than the basic S25 (6.7-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with new 'ProScaler' technology), as well as a bigger 4,900mAh battery. Mashable's Chance Townsend calls the S25+ the "sweet spot for battery life and versatility" amongst the S25 lineup. It doesn't look too much different than the S24+, but it'll definitely wow you in terms of internal upgrades — and that's saying something, considering how brilliant the S24 lineup already was." — Christina Buff, Mashable Contributor

"This budget Roborock model was also just released this year, but it's been living in the shadow of the big bad Saros trio. Nevertheless, it deserves a spotlight for the value that it packs, especially now that it's under $300 for Prime members ahead of Prime Day. The most impressive feat of the Roborock Q7 M5+ is its 10,000 Pa of suction power — that's far stronger than the norm for cheap robot vacuums. That matches the power of my favorite robot vacuum from 2024, the Roborock Qrevo Master, and is the baseline number I'd recommend for keeping up with substantial pet hair.
Note that the Q7 M5+ does mop and does self-empty, but doesn't wash and dry its own mopping pad like the more premium Roborocks." — Leah Stodart, Senior Shopping Reporter

"If you’ve yet to succumb to the air fryer hype, now’s your chance. The Chefman 4-Quart Window Air Fryer is currently on sale for $60.40, down from $99.99. That's a 40% discount and a $39.59 savings. It's not the absolute lowest price we've seen for this model (it was $49.97 last December), but it's still a solid deal for an Amazon's Choice kitchen appliance.
This mid-sized air fryer is large enough to cook a meal for up to four people, but small enough that it won’t monopolize your counter space. It’s also super user-friendly and has a little viewing window, so you can see what’s going on without opening the basket and letting all the heat escape (I like my stuff extra crispy, so this is a pretty cool feature IMO). There’s also a Hi-Fry button that lets you crank the heat up to 450 degrees in the last two minutes of cooking (again, great for those of us who like extra crispy food)." — Tabitha Britt, Mashable Contributor

"Snag the Dreo Tower Fan (DR-HTF007) for just $67.99, down from $79.99. I know a $12 savings might not sound like a huge number, but honestly, it's already pretty reasonably priced compared to a lot of similar models, and you're getting a ton of bang for your buck here.
This 36-inch tower fan features four different modes and speeds that you can easily adjust from the top panel or with the handy included remote. Plus, it oscillates a full 90 degrees to really get that cool air circulating throughout your room (reaching up to 25 feet per second, according to Dreo). It even has a timer function, so you don't have to worry about forgetting to turn it off. And for those light sleepers out there, it's designed to operate super quietly (at just 28 dB), making it a solid choice for bedrooms." — Tabitha Britt, Mashable contributor

"First released in 1948, Scrabble remains one of the most popular and best word games; it's my personal favorite. Whether you're new to the classic crossword game or are a word-slinging pro, you get seven letter tiles to start creating words and building upon letters added to the board with each turn. It's more than just word creation, though — land your highest-scoring letters on special double and triple point tiles and see who can rack up the most points. It's meant for two to four players. Grab it on sale for just $11.59 at Amazon ahead of Prime Day — that's nearly 50% off." — Christina Buff, Mashable contributor

The best laptops weve tested: Look for these 9 models on sale during Prime Day
Choosing the best laptop is a largely subjective decision that comes down to your primary use cases, your preferred operating system, and your budget. In other words, there's no such thing as a universally best laptop.
This is an annoying fact of life for both laptop shoppers and those of us doling out "best laptop" recommendations, since we can't make custom judgment calls for everyone in need of a new machine. (I would love to, but I've got a thing after this.) However, I can confidently point you in the right direction of some standouts that other members of the Mashable team and I have vetted and approved.
Best laptops to buy 2025As of July 2025, we think the new 15-inch Apple MacBook Air (M4) is the best MacBook for most people. It's a sleek-as-ever notebook featuring impressive performance, open-lid support for two external displays, a great 12MP Center Stage camera, and an extremely reasonable starting price of $1,199 (making it $100 cheaper than its M3 predecessor). What's more, Amazon can't stop putting it on sale.
SEE ALSO: The best cheap laptops for 2025The best Windows laptop we've tested is the 13.8-inch Microsoft Surface Laptop 7, a sophisticated and snappy Copilot+ PC boasting an unrivaled battery life of nearly 23 hours. Note that Microsoft makes an Intel version that may appeal to users wary of Windows on ARM for app compatibility reasons, but it's a business-oriented model with a significant markup.
Prime Day laptop deals are comingIf you're particularly hung up on the "budget" part of laptop shopping, know that mid-summer is one of the best times to buy a laptop. That's partly because of ongoing back-to-school discounts — even the Apple Store partakes — but it's also due to the hubbub surrounding Prime Day, Amazon's flagship summer sale for Prime members. (You can sign up for a free 30-day trial if you don't want to commit to a paid membership.) This year's festivities are scheduled for July 8 to 11, making it the longest Prime Day on record.
Normally slim on laptop deals, Amazon peppers its listings with better-than-usual discounts while Prime Day runs its course, giving extra attention to MacBooks, Surface laptops, and gaming laptops from Asus and Acer. Many models fall to new or year-round lows that we don't normally see outside of Black Friday.
SEE ALSO: Help, I can't stop recommending Amazon's $849 M4 MacBook Air dealPerhaps more importantly, Prime Day also spurs other tech retailers like Best Buy into running their own sales with competitive pricing that matches or beats Amazon's, giving diligent shoppers more opportunities to save. Cross-checking these offers will be your best line of defense against overpaying, but if you don't want to sift through the sea of sales yourself, I'll also be tracking the top Prime Day laptop deals myself.
Read on for Mashable's in-depth guide to the best laptops of 2025. FYI: We've listed the pricing and specs of our testing units, which may not apply to each laptop's base model
A note about tariffsNow is an especially weird time to be shopping for a new laptop. President Donald Trump's tariffs on almost all imports upended the tech market, causing some computer manufacturers to increase their prices and others to temporarily pause U.S. sales. We're monitoring this situation closely and will update this story if any of our top picks are affected. (None have been impacted so far, but the Asus ZenBook A14, a new contender we have in hand for testing, is now $100 pricier because of tariffs.)
What's on deckI'm nearly done reviewing the Framework Laptop 13 (Intel Core Ultra Series 1), a cult-favorite repairable laptop with a Mashable Choice Award-winning predecessor. After that, we'll soon test the following laptops:
The Asus ZenBook A14, a featherlight Copilot+ PC with a durable "Ceraluminum" chassis, an OLED display, and a ridiculous rated battery life of up to 32 hours per charge. I briefly checked it out at CES 2025, and it took home our Best of CES laptop category award.
The Asus Vivobook S 15, a sub-$1,000 Copilot+ PC with a 3K OLED display, an RGB backlit keyboard, and a rated battery life of up to 19 hours.
The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x (Gen 9), a handsome mid-ranger with an OLED touchscreen and a rated battery life of up to 23.5 hours.
The Acer Predator Helios 16, a 16-inch RTX 4080 gaming laptop priced at $2,299.99.
The MSI Stealth A16 AI+, a 16-inch RTX 4070 gaming laptop that costs just under two grand.
I recently tried the Dell XPS 13 (9450), a 2024 Lunar Lake PC that's the last of its kind. (Dell phased out the XPS series earlier this year.) It's easily one of the prettiest and most stylish laptops I've ever gotten my hands on, largely thanks to its edge-to-edge design and the tandem OLED touchscreen display on my review unit: It's luscious, bright, and finished with an Anti-Reflect coating that makes it immune to annoying glares. At 13.4 inches, the XPS 13 is an ultraportable stunner.
The XPS 13 also lasted over over 13 hours in our battery life test. That's not an especially long runtime compared to other Windows laptops in our database, but it's well above the category's current median.
However, the XPS 13 over-prioritizes form over function in several ways that I found frustrating. Its zero-lattice keyboard is cramped, stiff, and topped off by an odd touch function row. Its fussy touchpad would click when I wanted to scroll and drag when I wanted to click. Most egregiously, the XPS 13 only has two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports — there's not even a headphone jack! (First, they came for our smartphones...)
The overall value prop for its internals just isn't there, either. My mid-range Intel Core Ultra 256V loaner with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage costs $1,849.99. (Most Windows laptops and MacBooks we've tested in that price range are stronger performers with at least 1TB of storage, and some have double the RAM.) Granted, the XPS 13 starts at $1,199.99 if you scrap its tandem OLED display, which is an optional add-on, but I think that's one of its biggest draws. I ultimately rated it a 3.8/5.
In January, I tested the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14, a 2-in-1 Lunar Lake laptop priced at $1,899.99 as tested (with an Intel Core Ultra 258V processor, 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage). It's a beautiful machine with a colorful 3K OLED touchscreen display, a satisfying keyboard, a velvety touchpad, and a dark aluminum chassis that gives it a moody and elegant look. It also lasted an impressive 15 hours in our battery life test. That said, it has some baffling port placements and some very disappointing performance benchmark results.
In a Geekbench 6 multi-core test, my OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 scored slightly lower than the M2-powered MacBook Air from 2023 and significantly lower than its own predecessor. That would be last year's HP Spectre x360 14, which had a mid-range Core Ultra Series 1 processor as tested. I expected way more from a machine with Intel's freshest upper mid-range CPU.
Ultimately, I rated the OmniBook Flip 14 a 4.4/5 — very respectable, but just shy of being a Mashable Choice Award winner. It's a flashy premium hybrid for splurgers who want a future-proofed laptop that won't work very hard, but the zippier Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 feels like a better value for most people at $1,449.99 as tested.
If you're choosing between the two HP models, I'm also tempted to recommend the Spectre x360 14 over the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14. It offers more power and better top-firing speakers for a comparable price.

Moon phase today: What the moon will look like on July 5, 2025
The Full Moon is just days away now, but if you want to know what's going on with the moon tonight, keep reading because we have all the info you need.
The moon changes each night, well, from our perspective it does anyway. This is because of the lunar cycle, a recurring series of eight unique phases of the moon's visibility. The whole cycle takes about 29.5 days (according to NASA), and these different phases happen as the Sun lights up different parts of the moon whilst it orbits Earth. The moon is always there, but what we see on Earth changes depending on how much it is lit up.
See what's happening with the moon tonight, July 5.
What is today’s moon phase? As of Saturday, July 5, the moon phase is Waxing Gibbous. According to NASA's Daily Moon Observation, 75% of the moon will be lit up and visible to us on Earth.
This is day 10 of the lunar cycle, and we're only one phase away from the Full Moon. So, with so much of the moon lit up, there are plenty of geological features for us to spot, both with the naked eye and with aids.
Tonight, there is plenty to see with the naked eye, the most notable being the Mare Vaporum, the Copernicus Crater, and the Tycho Crater. With binoculars, you can add the Alps Mountains, Archimedes Crater, and the Alphonsus Crater to your list.
If you're one of the lucky ones with a telescope, you've got a great night of moon gazing ahead of you, with additional viewings of the Linne Crater, Apollo 12, and the Rupes Altai.
When is the next full moon? This month's full moon will take place on July 10. The last full moon was on June 11.
What are moon phases?Moon phases are caused by the 29.5-day cycle of the moon’s orbit, which changes the angles between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Moon phases are how the moon looks from Earth as it goes around us. We always see the same side of the moon, but how much of it is lit up by the Sun changes depending on where it is in its orbit. This is how we get full moons, half moons, and moons that appear completely invisible. There are eight main moon phases, and they follow a repeating cycle:
New Moon - The moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).
Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).
First Quarter - Half of the moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-moon.
Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it’s not quite full yet.
Full Moon - The whole face of the moon is illuminated and fully visible.
Waning Gibbous - The moon starts losing light on the right side.
Last Quarter (or Third Quarter) - Another half-moon, but now the left side is lit.
Waning Crescent - A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before going dark again.

There are five rounds to the game. The first round sees you trying to guess the word, with correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters shown in each guess. If you guess the correct answer, it'll take you to the next hurdle, providing the answer to the last hurdle as your first guess. This can give you several clues or none, depending on the words. For the final hurdle, every correct answer from previous hurdles is shown, with correct and misplaced letters clearly shown.
An important note is that the number of times a letter is highlighted from previous guesses does necessarily indicate the number of times that letter appears in the final hurdle.

Nothing Headphone (1) reviews: Find out what critics are saying
What if you could get a really good pair of over-ear headphones that didn't cost more than $400?
That's the question Nothing, a UK-based tech startup, is trying to answer with the new Nothing Headphone (1) headphones, just unveiled this week. A bunch of tech publications got to try out the new headphones prior to their reveal and launch, meaning there are now a good number of reviews available out there for folks interested in potentially getting this $299 pair of over-ear cans.
SEE ALSO: Nothing Phone (3) announced. See specs, price, preorder details Nothing Headphone (1) priceWhat did the critics have to say about these new headphones? For starters, many agree that they're a great value at $299. The closest points of comparison in terms of features and audio quality are things like the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones and the Apple AirPods Max, both of which retail for well over $400. From that perspective, Nothing is already at an advantage.
But what about everything else?
The designFor starters, these headphones have kind of a funky design that might turn off some customers, but might appeal to others. They have big, rectangular cases for the ear cups, and they only come in two colors: white and black. Ben Schoon summed it up nicely in 9to5Google's review:
"Nothing’s design here is unique, to say the least. The partially square, partially rounded design gives off cassette tape vibes, which I rather like," Schoon wrote.
Pretty much every other review I read aligned with that viewpoint. Whether you personally are into the design or not, Nothing deserves some credit for trying something.
Matt Bolton, meanwhile, made sure to emphasize in TechRadar's review that the headphones are comfortable for long sessions, regardless of how they look.
"This fit will also be a little divisive – some people really prefer just a lighter-weight headphone that doesn't need to grip so much – but I found them more comfortable than the AirPods Max, and fine to wear for a good stretch of time," Bolton wrote.
The soundThis is the tricky part. Little else, not design, comfort, or active noise cancelation features, matters more than the sound quality when it comes to headphones. Unfortunately, it's pretty broadly agreed in most reviews I read that this is one area where the price difference between Headphone (1) and its closest competition manifests.
That's not to say the sound is bad, though. In James Pero's review for Gizmodo, he praised the quality of the noise cancelation and the audio output in general. It may not be quite at the level of AirPods Max, but there's a $250 price difference between the two, so that's probably to be expected.
"I still think Apple’s AirPods Max have a slight edge in the sound department — mid-to-highs just have slightly more texture and room, which makes vocals feel more organic and clear," Pero wrote. "That being said, Nothing holds its own against a competitor that charges a very hefty premium."
Bolton, on the other hand, was more critical in his review for TechRadar.
"The audio is tuned by the great hi-fi brand KEF, and is reasonably refined, well-balanced, and broadly enjoyable," Bolton wrote. "But it also feels compressed, and lacks the openness and expansive sound I'm used to from testing the competition at this price."
The battery lifeFor $300, you'd expect good battery life out of a pair of headphones. It sounds like Nothing delivered in that department. Schoon said in his 9to5Google review that the batteries lasted 35 hours with ANC turned on and 80 without it. My goodness, that's pretty darn good.
Based on these reviews, it sounds like Nothing's first over-ear headphones are solid, at worst. You may have to deal with slightly worse audio quality than some of the more expensive models, and you may not like the design, but they seem like a good value where it counts.
