Is this tomtoc carrying case the best for the Nintendo Switch 2? Heres why its my top pick.
Like with any new release, the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 saw plenty of third-party brands come out of the woodwork to push their lines of cases and other accessories — many rushed out with questionable quality as a result.
tomtoc, however, has a strong reputation for delivering laptop sleeves and iPad covers and has been in the business since 2016. The popular brand has also been making products for the Nintendo Switch family for quite a while now. Following the success of their cases for the Switch OLED, tomtoc’s slimline Switch 2 case builds on what made its original so handy — offering prime protection, taking up as little space as possible, and looking good at the same time.
tomtoc vs. everything elseThere are three types of cases Switch 2 buyers can grab: ones big enough to transport their whole setup (dock and all), mid-way chunkier products that offer mesh pouches for extra Joy-Cons and other accessories, or minimalist cases designed to house only the console.
After trying it out for several weeks, I can say that the tomtoc Nintendo Switch 2 carrying case is all about the latter, and then some. Working as a precision-fit lightweight shell, the case is made to fit around the console snugly, moulded around the triggers, joysticks, and buttons.
Credit: Mashable/tomtoc/NintendoLightweight and slim, tomtoc’s Switch 2 case has been perfect for me as someone who travels on the regular — since it can easily slide right into my laptop pouch or rucksack without taking extra space away from the ASUS TUF A16 laptop I use for work on the road and at home.
If you were planning to take your Switch 2 on a week-long trip with four-person Mario Kart World sessions in mind, a bulkier bag or case for extra controllers and even your dock might be a better fit.
However, for solo adventures or day-to-day commutes where your bag space is already limited, tomtoc’s case is just right. The only necessary addition is a non-intrusive cartridge pouch that can hold 12 physical Switch 1 or Switch 2 cartridges. So, you can still hop between Donkey Kong Bananza and Tears of the Kingdom if you wish.
Credit: Mashable/tomtoc/NintendoIt could technically be slightly slimmer, but the added millimetres to its width and slots for the Joy-Con triggers and buttons are essential for its soft-shock absorption while travelling. Otherwise, without that extra room, those physical features of the console would be more prone to damage.
Premium quality and protectionThe interior is made of a nice, felt-like soft plush material, making the act of actually removing Switch 2 feel a little more luxurious. Does this matter? No. Does this feel nice? Yes.
The hard exterior clamshell-style case itself is made from “Military-Standard-Drop-Test-Protection” materials that are lighter than EVA.
The precision moulding around the Switch 2 makes this case truly space-efficient Credit: Mashable/tomtoc/NintendoWhile the case feels almost weightless, and even almost hollow, this case has still done a solid job of not only protecting my Switch 2 whilst travelling, but through several 4-5 foot drops onto the hardwood floor of my apartment.
Lastly, what makes tomtoc stand out among other Switch cases is the high-quality effort put into its presentation in tandem with its slim design. The team could have just picked a plain and simple black or blue SKU and shipped it out, but tomtoc offers nine colour options to fit in with your style, with some unique options that should suit just about everyone.
The grey case I picked out fit in nicely with the ‘sleek but not too loud’ aesthetic I was going for, but the yellow colouring of the tomtoc logo still gives it that extra splash of personality.

10 burning questions we have for Wednesday Season 2, Part 2
Wednesday Season 2 got off to a strong start, upping the horror elements and banishing Season 1's pesky love triangle.
The season's first four episodes also answered some of our burning questions from the end of Season 1. Who is Wednesday's (Jenna Ortega) stalker? None other than fangirl Agnes DeMille (Evie Templeton). Who is Nevermore's new principal? The spirited Barry Dort (Steve Buscemi). Would Hyde Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) return? Yes, even breaking out of Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital by the end of Season 2, Part 1.
SEE ALSO: 'Wednesday' Season 2, Part 1 review: Does more macabre means more fun? However, despite gifting all these answers, Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 still left us with several more questions to ponder. (As any good mystery should.) So as we prepare for the month-long wait until Part 2, let's take a look at the 10 biggest questions we have going into the final episodes of Wednesday Season 2.
Is Enid actually going to die? Emma Myers in "Netflix." Credit: Jonathan Hession / NetflixWednesday received a horrifying vision of her roommate Enid Sinclair's (Emma Myers) death in Wednesday Season 2's very first episode, and since then we've been waiting on pins and needles (a punishment I'm sure Wednesday would love inflicting on her enemies) to see if that vision would come true. So far, so good. By the end of Part 1, Enid is alive and kicking.
However, things don't look so good for her heading into Part 2.
Remember, in episode 2, Wednesday visited Tyler in the Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital, where he vowed that he'd murder Enid the next time he saw her. At the time, that threat seemed fairly low-level given that Tyler was imprisoned in a very secure cell. However, at the end of episode 4, he's managed to escape — and Enid is first on his kill list. Things aren't looking good for Nevermore's bubbliest werewolf.
Will Wednesday get her psychic powers back? Jenna Ortega in "Wednesday." Credit: Jonathan Hession / NetflixAfter spending a whole summer honing her psychic abilities, Wednesday loses her powers after seeing a vision of Enid's death. She believes she can get them back by re-examining Goody's spellbook, but there's one big problem there: Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) has burned it.
Will Wednesday take the loss of the book as an opportunity to try and find a psychic to guide her? Or will she continue to push herself and drive herself to madness, like her Aunt Ophelia? Speaking of...
Did Wednesday free Ophelia from Willow Hill? Jenna Ortega in "Wednesday." Credit: NetflixAll season-long, Morticia has talked about her younger sister Ophelia: How she went mad from her psychic visions, how she was sent to Willow Hill by their mother, and how she's been missing for 20 years. But what if she wasn't really missing? What if, during her time at Willow Hill, she was forcibly brought into LOIS (Long-term Outcast Integration Study)? Willow Hill faked all the other subjects' deaths, so it stands to reason they'd fake a disappearance too.
With that in mind, I'm fairly sure that the last LOIS subject Wednesday frees from Willow Hill (played by Frances O'Connor) is actually Ophelia. First, she seems to be in the correct age range. Second, Wednesday takes great pains to separate her from the other LOIS subjects. She doesn't try to kill LOIS mastermind Judi Stonehurst (Heather Matarazzo) — instead, she sticks by Wednesday's side as they try to make their escape. Was this asylum escape also a twisted family reunion? Only in the Addams Family.
Why is Principal Dort so obsessed with Morticia's mother? Joanna Lumley in "Wednesday." Credit: Owen Behan/NetflixThroughout Wednesday Season 2, Part 1, Principal Dort has been on a one-man mission to get Morticia's mother Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley) to donate to Nevermore. And look, I get it. I've seen Absolutely Fabulous, I understand the fan girling over Lumley. But why in the world is Dort so hellbent on securing her donation in particular? Is it just because she's really, really rich? Or is there a darker reason why he's targeting her?
What's really going on with the Nevermore gala fundraiser? Steve Buscemi in "Wednesday." Credit: Helen Sloan / NetflixWhile we're on the subject of Dort and his fundraising tactics, why is he so invested in this fundraiser, to the point that he blackmails teen siren Bianca Barclay (Joy Sunday)? Something shadier is going on here beyond just trying to raise money for the Nevermore gala, and I'm going to need Part 2 to tell us exactly what it is, stat.
Who was Principal Dort talking to on the phone? Steve Buscemi in "Wednesday." Credit: Helen Sloan / NetflixI'm not done with Dort just yet, because that man is ringing all the alarm bells! On top of blackmailing Bianca, Nevermore's principal has another suspicious moment in episode 4, when Bianca and Ajax (Georgie Farmer) overhear him on the phone in his office telling someone: "I've always had your back, you've always had mine. So relax. I've never been more confident about anything. I have it under control."
You have what under control, Dort? The school, or some dark secret project? Let's throw some crazy theories out there. I'll start. Maybe he's in cahoots with Judi, and, like her, is a Normie who received Outcast powers through the LOIS program. Maybe he infiltrated the school to find new Outcast test subjects, and the gala is a way to gather them all in one place. I'm onto you, Barry! I might not be correct, but I know something is up!
Where does Bianca's mother fit into all this? Joy Sunday in "Wednesday." Credit: NetflixAn interesting subplot of these first four episodes has been the arrival of Bianca's mother Gabrielle (Gracy Goldman) in Jericho after the Morning Song cult was shut down. As of the end of Part 1, cult leader Gideon Sterling is on the run from the FBI. We don't have a lot of details on what befell the cult or why Gabrielle fled, but now that she's stashed away in an old classroom at Nevermore, here's hoping we get some more information on her plight soon.
What happens when Slurp is fully de-zombified? Isaac Ordonez in "Wednesday." Credit: NetflixPugsley Addams (Isaac Ordonez) started his time at Nevermore with a bang — or should I say, a zap. The youngest Addams resurrected the corpse of a former Nevermore student and got his own personal zombie in Slurp (Owen Painter).
However, the more Slurp eats (both of Nevermore's cafeteria mystery meat and human brains), the less zombified he gets, until he's even able to talk during the big Willow Hill prison break sequence. At the rate he's going, he'll be back to human in no time — so what in the world will happen then?
We do know, according to Ajax's ghost story in episode 1, "The Tale of the Skull Tree," that Slurp was buried in the exact spot as the protagonist: the boy who invented a mechanical heart for himself and then grew up to become one of Nevermore Academy's brightest minds — though his ambition led to his death there. Will we learn more when Slurp's brain completes?
Where is Lady Gaga in Wednesday Season 2?Netflix had already announced that Lady Gaga would only be appearing in Wednesday Season 2, Part 2, but that doesn't make her absence here sting any less. She'll be playing Nevermore teacher Rosaline Rotwood, who somehow isn't around for any of the mayhem of the first half of the season. I'm sure she'll deliver come Part 2 though, and maybe we'll even be blessed by a Lady Gaga needle drop. (I'm thinking "Zombieboy" for a Slurp scene, obviously.)
As reported by Variety, Lady Gaga will also be releasing a new song, titled "Dead Dance," tied to the release of Part 2. New banger incoming! And perhaps we'll get a new iconic Wednesday dance scene to go along with it? After all, Wednesday's dance in Season 1, originally set to The Cramps' "Goo Goo Muck," found viral fame online when set to a sped-up version of Lady Gaga's "Bloody Mary."
Where the heck is Cousin Itt?This question harkens back to our Season 1 question round-up, but it bears repeating. So far, Wednesday Season 2 has given the entire Addams Family, including Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), far more to do. It's also introduced new faces in Grandmama Hester and potentially Ophelia.
But one legendary Addams is missing, and that's Cousin Itt! Where is this magnificent hairball, and when will he be swooshing onto our screens? If not within the next few episodes, we can keep our fingers crossed for him to pop up in the already-announced Season 3. Come on, Wednesday, we need Itt!
Wednesday Season 2 Part 1 is now streaming on Netflix. Part 2 premieres Sept. 3.

Wednesday fixes its love triangle problem in Season 2
Wednesday Season 1 made a bizarre choice: sticking its title heroine (Jenna Ortega) in a love triangle between Jericho barista/monstrous Hyde Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) and psychic Nevermore student Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White).
The inclusion of a love triangle fit Wednesday's trend of putting Gothic twists on classic high school TV tropes, yet the romantic drama of it all didn't feel true to the character of Wednesday Addams. Don't just take it from me, take it from Ortega herself! In an episode of Dax Shepherd's Armchair Expert podcast, the actor said, "Her being in a love triangle made no sense."
SEE ALSO: 'Wednesday' Season 2, Part 1 review: Does more macabre means more fun? Then, in an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Ortega discussed plans for Wednesday Season 2, saying, "I think we want to up the horror aspect a little bit, then get Wednesday out of the romantic situation and just let her be her own individual and fight her own crime."
Wednesday Season 2 does just that, leaning far more into horror and doing away with Wednesday's love triangle entirely. To no one's surprise — especially not Ortega's — the show is better for it.
How does Wednesday Season 2 get rid of Wednesday's love triangle? Hunter Doohan in "Wedneday." Credit: Jonathan Hession / NetflixWednesday Season 2 removes both of Wednesday's former love interests from the board with little fuss.
Xavier is no longer at Nevermore, with Hynes White departing the show in 2024. His exit came after women accused him of sexual assault on social media in 2023. Hynes White called these allegations "a campaign of misinformation."
Within the world of the show, Xavier gets one last "goodbye gift," sending Wednesday a psychic painting of a crow on a headstone, the same image Wednesday later sees in her vision of Enid's (Emma Myers) death. In that scene, we also learn that Wednesday tossed the phone Xavier gave her at the end of Season 1 into a boiling cauldron, so he can't easily contact her. The phone-boiling scene reads like the show's final, definite refutation of Season 1's love triangle.
SEE ALSO: 'Wednesday' renewed for Season 3, Netflix announces 2 weeks before Season 2 premiereUnlike Xavier, Tyler is still involved in the show. However, his chances with Wednesday are slimmer than slim, because her actions in Season 1 led to him being imprisoned in Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. She visits him there in Season 2, episode 2, where he tries to make a romantic appeal to her dark side.
"You sensed the monster in me. You fell in love with it," Tyler tells her. "We're two black-hearted souls ready to pillage the world together."
"The only thing you're pillaging is an extra fruit cup at dinner," Wednesday retorts. Ouch.
Between that and the rest of the verbal dressing-down she gives Tyler at Willow Hill, we can consider that side of the love triangle officially erased. Good! That gives us more time to focus on Wednesday's many mysteries.
Wednesday Season 2 gives Enid a love triangle of her own. Noah B. Taylor and Emma Myers in "Wednesday." Credit: Jonathan Hession / NetflixJust because Wednesday is out of her love triangle doesn't mean Wednesday is without any kind of relationship drama. Turns out Enid's got some competing suitors of her own.
Frankly, when it comes to Wednesday characters to put in love triangles, Enid is far and away the most logical choice. Leaps and bounds beyond her roommate Wednesday! As the more social of the pair, and the one more open to romance, Enid's love triangle makes far more sense. Let Nevermore's bubbliest student live out her teen TV fantasy and find love!
At the end of Season 1, Enid wound up with gorgon Ajax (Georgie Farmer). But after a summer of wolfing out and embracing her place in the wolf pack, Enid's learned a lot more about herself. She's not the insecure girl Ajax fell for. Plus, now she's got eyes for fellow werewolf Bruno (Noah B. Taylor). She just... hasn't been able to break up with Ajax to his face.
Thankfully, though, Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 doesn't drag Enid's love triangle out too much. By the end of the season's first four episodes, she's broken things off with Ajax and become an item with Bruno. Yay for Enid, and yay for viewers who don't want to deal with too many more love triangle shenanigans!
The loss of Wednesday's original love triangle frees up more room to explore the dynamics of the Addams Family — especially when it comes to Wednesday's complicated relationship with her mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). It also allows the show to hone in further on Enid and Wednesday's friendship, which faces major complications as Wednesday begins to push Enid away in the hopes of protecting her from prophesied death. For the Wednesday-Enid shippers, at least, the door remains open.
Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 is now streaming on Netflix, with Part 2 premiering Sept. 3.

Excellent condition: $515.99
Good condition: $497.99
Fair condition: $479.99
That puts this high-spec device well within reach for gamers wanting portable performance without shelling out for a full desktop or gaming laptop.

It runs Windows 11, supports full Xbox Game Pass compatibility, and includes detachable RGB-lit controllers with Hall effect joysticks for increased durability.
As discussed in our Mashable review for the Lenovo Legion Go by Alex Perry, this handheld gaming PC performs admirably across titles like Halo Infinite, Cyberpunk 2077, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon, especially when fine-tuning power settings. The device even includes a clever FPS mode for controller-based mouse-style aiming.
And because it runs standard Windows, you’re not locked into any single platform; it plays Steam, Epic Games, GOG, and just about any PC launcher you throw at it.
While the fan noise can be noticeably loud, especially when set to higher performance profiles — along with the Legion Space software feeling a bit clunky compared to other storefronts, this is still a device that pairs premium specs with console-like versatility.
For these new prices, the Legion Go offers serious value. If you want a robust, Windows-based gaming handheld that doesn’t compromise on screen quality or game compatibility, now’s a great time to buy.

Stephen Colbert puzzles over Trumps rooftop press conference
Press conferences can happen in a great number of locations, but the White House roof is a bit of a curveball. President Donald Trump appeared atop the West Wing on Tuesday, reportedly surveying building projects. Reporters found out, and gathered to ask the president reasonable questions like, "Sir, why are you on the roof?"
"That's not a question you hear asked for a world leader that often," said The Late Show's Stephen Colbert during his Tuesday night monologue. "It's right up there with 'Your Majesty, where are your pants?'"
Colbert unpacked the president's attempts to communicate from the roof through hand signals and his "very normal un-miked roof shouting," with reporters responding, "What does that mean?"
"Yeah, what does that mean?" asked Colbert, from an extremely wide camera angle as if yelling up to a roof. "What does any of this mean? How are you the guy in charge? Why do we have to pretend? Why do we have to pretend it's normal when an old man wanders around a roof and shouts at us?"
Hurdle hints and answers for August 6, 2025
If you like playing daily word games like Wordle, then Hurdle is a great game to add to your routine.
There are five rounds to the game. The first round sees you trying to guess the word, with correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters shown in each guess. If you guess the correct answer, it'll take you to the next hurdle, providing the answer to the last hurdle as your first guess. This can give you several clues or none, depending on the words. For the final hurdle, every correct answer from previous hurdles is shown, with correct and misplaced letters clearly shown.
An important note is that the number of times a letter is highlighted from previous guesses does necessarily indicate the number of times that letter appears in the final hurdle.

Forget, The Bear. King of the Hill has the most stressful restaurant episode of 2025
From the moment King of the Hill dropped its opening credits as a teaser for the long-awaited Season 14, my heart quickened. The theme song roared in with images of Arlen residents like Bill, Dale, Boomhauer, and the Hills: Hank, Peggy, and Bobby, all behind the fence of the eponymous family's home. It was like no time had passed, but even in a cartoon series where characters can remain the same age for season after season, time has passed.
Season 14 of King of the Hill picks up with Hank and Peggy being retirees who have returned from their time in Saudi Arabia to Arlen, Texas, and Bobby Hill, now a 21-year-old chef who skipped college to begin his own restaurant. Episode 3 of the new season from creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels digs into Bobby's business specifically. And I was not prepared for how emotionally invested I was in seeing Bobby (voiced by Pamela Adlon) turn out okay.
"Bobby Gets Grilled" proves the biggest test for the fan-favorite character yet. And that brought me levels of stress I haven't felt since the real-time episode of The Bear, Season 1, "The Review."
What happens in "Bobby Gets Grilled?" Bobby Hill stands in his restaraunt, Robata Chane. Credit: HuluIt's a big day for Bobby Hill. Now living in Dallas, he's the head chef and co-owner of Robata Chane, "a traditional Japanese barbeque with a fusion of flavors and techniques of the German traditions of the Texas hill country." But despite a staff that is dedicated to his vision, problems abound. Nearly out of the Binchotan charcoal they need to grill, Bobby must source some immediately, or Robata Chane will have to shut down. And the could-be new supplier, Mr. Yoshida, refuses to sell to Bobby, because he sees this white man as a cultural appropriator.
Yoshida flyers the district, calling out this perceived transgression, which draws the ire of three German-Americans who are bothered that Bobby's not as "pure" in his German heritage as they'd like. ("Really? You're going there?" Bobby responds with surprise.) And that's not all. Bobby's investors, the smug father-and-son duo of Ted and Chane Wassanasong, are waffling on their commitment to backing Bobby's vision. And still, there's more.
Charcoal. Bobby Hill, son of proud propane (and propane accessories) salesman Hank Hill, is using charcoal and not propane in his restaurant. When Peggy and Hank come to visit Bobby's restaurant for the first time, Hank is utterly shattered to learn this bit of grilling information. So, what's Bobby to do?
A last supper. With the encouragement of his new friend and sous chef Emilio, Bobby prepares a possible last supper, serving his fusion food his way to all who doubt him: The Germans, Mr. Yoshida, the Chanes, the Hills, and the Gribbles (who came along for the ride).
It's a setup reminiscent of the impeccable indie Big Night, which came years before The Bear brought the stresses of running a restaurant to streaming. I realized as I watched, my muscles tensed, tighter and tighter, my fear for Bobby pulling me into a full-body clench. And as Bobby laid down his grilled kebabs of yuzu-wurst stuffed with rice and pickled daikon, I gasped. My eyes rimmed with tears, ready to weep with agony if he failed and joy if he thrived.
And Bobby Hill thrives.
Bobby Hill is no Carmen Berzatto. Credit: Hulu Credit: Hulu"That boy ain't right" was a catchphrase from the original run of King of the Hill, coined by Hank to sum up how he couldn't make sense of his artistic young son. Where Hank grew up stewing in the toxic masculinity of war stories, womanizing, and football that was his father Cotton's worldview, Bobby shrugged off such trappings, perhaps in no small part because of the influence of his mother Peggy Hill, who is similarly a confident and creative oddball.
Whether it was prop comedy, dancing with dogs, or playing video games, Bobby's interests were generally met with initial dismay from Hank. But despite his bristling, Hank loved Bobby, and showed it in the ways his own stymied emotional awareness would allow. In "Bobby Gets Grilled," Bobby reflects on his own awareness of how he often disappointed his dad, explaining to Emilio, "My dad loves four things in life: America, my mom, me, and propane. And when I was a kid, depending on the week, propane would be above me on the list."
It's a moment that's funny, but also achingly true. Bobby and Hank love each other, but also have a big gap in how they see the world. For Hank, he worried that Bobby's creativity and softness would be a disadvantage. Because in every flashback, Cotton Hill bullied Hank into the idea that sensitivity was a weakness a man could not afford. So Hank's critiques of Bobby came not from a place of disgust, but of concern and confusion. And in "Bobby Gets Grilled," we get to witness Hank finally get it. Bobby being Bobby is how he wins.
Addressing his diners before the last supper, Bobby says, "Before we serve it, let me make something perfectly clear. This is not authentic Japanese or German food. It's authentic Bobby food. It's important that I'm authentic to myself."
Then, he lets his food speak for him. With his thoughtful attention to detail and taste, he wins over all who doubt him, one by one — even his dad. "Everyone loves the food," Hank tells Bobby, as his son stands over the charcoal grill, "And that includes me." Hank even leads a toast to Chef Bobby.
Bobby Hill is a hero to small-town weirdos, who dreamed of something else. Bobby Hill in his restaurant Robata Chane in "King of the Hill." Credit: HuluFor 13 seasons of the original run of King of the Hill, Bobby became a representative for kids who didn't fit the mold of their small town's ideals. Being a dog-dancer in a football town isn't easy. But Bobby gave a vision of confidence that gave us a path to follow and encouragement to stick to it. Sometimes, he even led that path for his parents.
In Season 4, episode 23, "Transnational Amusements Presents: Peggy's Magic Sex Feet," Peggy feels down on herself because a devious foot doctor has exploited her "ugly feet." Bobby finds her talking negatively about herself, calling herself stupid for loving her body as it is. Bobby offers a speech that's been shared around the internet ever since this episode aired in 2000.
“I'm fat. But big deal. I don't feel bad about it. You never made me feel bad about it, and just because there are some people in the world who want me to feel bad about it, doesn't mean I have to. So Bobby Hill's fat. Eh. He's also funny, nice. He's got a lot of friends, a girlfriend, and if you don't mind, I think I'll go outside and squirt her with water. What are you gonna do?”
Bobby dared to love himself, even when he was mocked or misunderstood. He was true to himself as a watergun-toting 11-year-old and now as an embattled 21-year-old. He stuck to his metaphorical guns and showed the world his heart, his truth, and his food. Season 14 of King of the Hill will throw other curveballs of adulthood his way, specifically in terms of romance. But here, in this moment, Bobby Hill proves a role model again.
For every creative kid who made their parents scratch their heads, for every small-town oddball who'd found their community in a big city, for every fat kid who dared to love themselves, or a goofball who did good, Bobby has been an inspiration. And seeing him get grilled and come out on top meant not only that King of the Hill is back and as good as ever, but also that Bobby Hill is still a hero for us weirdos.

Sketch review: Tony Hale and DArcy Carden get silly in terrific, kid-friendly adventure
Of late, the inner turmoil of little girls has birthed a string of movies about big emotions and monsters. Inside Out 2 introduced Anxiety to the feelings crew, pitching its heroine into adolescent social panic. Imaginary spun a horror story of a forgotten imaginary friend gone vengeful, while Netflix's animated adventure The Imaginary focused on the personal growth of an imaginary friend dreamed up by a grieving little girl. Then the woefully overstuffed and underwhelming If, from John Krasinski, had another grieving young heroine coping with her emotions through rescuing abandoned imaginary friends (or IFs).
All this means Sketch comes into a crowded field. And yet this inventive indie with a similar setup spins a wondrous and wacky story all its own.
The feature directorial debut of Seth Worley, Sketch centers on the Wyatts, who are struggling to process their pain in the wake of their mother's death. Widowed dad Taylor (The Decameron's Tony Hale) strives to be upbeat, tucking away mementos of the kids' mum as if that'll hide away the agony. Eldest child Jack (Kue Lawrence) follows his father's lead, determined that a good attitude can fix any problem. Meanwhile, 11-year-old Amber (Bianca Belle) is filled with rage, which spills out in a sketchbook where she scribbles vicious monsters in violent scenarios. But when a bit of magic brings these creations to life, the family must face their hurt head-on and team up to save the day from these creative manifestations of mourning.
SEE ALSO: Tony Hale is hot, and 4 other reasons to watch 'The Decameron'Bringing together a strong, kid-friendly premise and a deeply crafty sensibility, Worley builds a visual world of imagination and emotion that's a twisted pleasure to visit.
Sketch dazzles with its distinctive design. Credit: Angel StudiosForget glorious hand-drawn animation or a cavalcade of balloon-like CGI cartoons. Worley, who has a background as a visual effects artist, uses computer graphics to create a sublimely hand-drawn feel by building Amber's beasts as they are drawn. Think creatures fully fleshed-out but made of scribbles, their limbs wiry and a little bit wrong, their mouths spewing glitter, their tracks leaving splotches of color behind. With textures of waxy crayon, slippery marker streaks, and stippled chalk, these are monsters unlike any we've seen in movies before. They are monsters you'd see in a kid's doodles, complete with googly eyes, glitter flourishes, crooked fangs, and a thirst for blood.
Unbridled joy bursts forth from even Sketch's most suspenseful action scenes, because of the delightful absurdity of these designs. They're creepy but not outright scary, making this a sensational movie for kids who are beginning to get into horror but aren't ready to go to sleep with goosebumps. Actually Sketch has a very Goosebumps vibe, from its playful score to its colorfully creepy world and child heroes, who are sharply drawn.
Behind his can-do attitude, Jack carries a heavy self-imposed burden that makes him fiercely protective of his sister. He's not afraid to call a kid a "b-hole" if he has it coming! Amber wears a furrowed brow, but her eyes glow bright when she's talking about her drawings — even the grisliest ones. The siblings' reluctant sidekick in this spirited adventure is classmate Bowman (Kalon Cox), a big mouth who is 95 percent bad impulses and 5 percent goofball. Clamoring for creative solutions to the very creative problem of rampaging drawings, they'll grab water guns and other improvisational weapons. But their greatest tool is their chaotic chemistry. When they collide, sparks fly — as well as juvenile insults — and it's Goonies-style drama, alive with silliness.
Tony Hale and D'Arcy Carden lend stellar support. Credit: Angel StudiosHale has been a supreme supporting player on everything from Arrested Development to VEEP, The Decameron, Inside Out 2, Toy Story 4, and Hocus Pocus 2. But here, he's far less of a buffoon. Worley, who also scripted Sketch, which Hale produced, gives the celebrated "that guy" a role that's a bit more grounded. With a warm but not comically broad smile, Hale swiftly establishes Taylor as a devoted dad. There'll be moments of frustration and even moments when he's not mad — say it with me — he's just disappointed. And these hit home because Hale's performance walks the line between family-friendly broad comedy and tender family drama. When an eager Amber shows off her drawings of vicious birds atop a pile of bodies, Hale's expression is a look of mingled pride and revulsion that deftly establishes this strong but straining father-daughter bond. He marvels at her, even as he's a bit freaked out by her potential.
Playing Taylor's sister Liz, D'Arcy Carden, the Emmy-winning Janet of The Good Place, gives off major "cool aunt vibes" from the moment she swaggers onto scene, ready to throw her skills as a real estate agent toward helping this family move on (or at least move out of the family home). Alternatively dishing out tough love to her brother (wanted or not) and marveling over her niece's dangerous creativity ("I love her brain!"), Liz provides a path forward for a family so lost in grief they've forgotten how to talk to each other. But as emotional as this movie can be — with maybe one too many stops in the action to discuss feelings — it is above all things funny and joyful.
Yes, there's talk of death, and grief, and deadly monsters, and multiple scenes where children are fleeing for their lives. But laced throughout is a vibrant thread of humor that celebrates the messiness of family, being young, and being hurt, and it exists without mocking its characters. These wonderfully entertaining bits make up for a third act that gets a bit clunky. Comedy comes from the understandably exasperated look of a dad whose last nerve is fraying, from the little girl whose defiant backtalk is vexingly silly, from the squabbling of kids that is as frenzied as it can be outrageous.
Worley doesn't just keep things light to keep Sketch as appropriate for kids as it is for parents (something Krasinski did not manage). This tone, mixing horrific elements with delightful ones, underscores the very message of the movie: that life is both, and ignoring one won't make it go away — quite the opposite, actually!
In the end, Sketch is a fantastically fun and heartwarming movie with a slathering of weird that makes it a real treat.
Sketch opens in theaters Aug. 6.
UPDATE: Aug. 5, 2025, 9:16 a.m. Sketch was reviewed out of its World Premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2024. The review has been updated with the latest release information.
DJI Mini 4K drone stock is running low — here’s where to get yours

DJI is one of the biggest names in drones, with a strong reputation for creating incredible aerial shots. The DJI product range is the top choice of TikTokers, YouTubers, and filmmakers. That being said, we were surprised to see the DJI Mini 4K drone so near the top of the charts of best-sellers over Prime Day. We knew these drones were popular, but surely not as popular as AirPods?
Then the real reason hit us like a drone to the head.
President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders aimed at helping the U.S. drone industry and shoring up protections against malicious drone activity. The measures don't actually order a full ban on Chinese-made drones (yet), but talk of a ban on DJI drones has been doing the rounds for a while now. That uncertainty is clearly causing an uptick in sales.
SEE ALSO: The DJI Power 2000 portable power station means business, and it’s great for DJI drone ownersThe good news is that you can still find the DJI Mini 4K drone on Amazon, listed for $299 right now. It's being sold by AeroTech Hubs. We don't generally recommend third-party sellers, but AeroTech Hubs has excellent reviews and times are tough right now. Amazon is warning that stock is running low, so you might need to act fast to secure your drone.
The DJI Mini 4K is full of helpful features for beginners and advanced users alike. It has one-tap takeoff options and a return to home function. But perhaps most importantly for content creators is the three-axis gimbal and 4K quality, as well as advanced wind resistance and extended battery life. It's a step up from the DJI Neo Mini 4K that we think creators will appreciate.
