CES 2025: Heres how to get your hands on the new Lenovo Legion Go S

Fri, 01/10/2025 - 11:56

Welcome back to the incredible week of tech announcements at CES. We now have a robot vacuum with an arm to clean up your stray socks and a laptop with a rollable screen.

But in the wonderful world of gaming, we're all eyes on Lenovo which just dropped two exciting announcements about the new Legion Go S handheld, which will start shipping out later this month. However, some models aren't slated to ship until May.

Here's everything we know so far.

The standout details

The Legion Go S is an updated version of last year's Legion Go, with a few modifications that make it more travel-friendly and easier to toss into a backpack, weighing a bit over 1.5 pounds. For starters, the Legion Go S doesn't have detachable controllers and the display is a bit smaller — using an 8-inch FHD display compared to the 8.8-inch GHD we got with the Legion Go. It also uses the new AMD Ryzen Z2 Go CPU.

In many aspects, the new Legion Go S is a bit like a lite version of the Legion Go.

But one of the most important notes here is that while we're getting a Windows-based Legion Go S, we're also getting a SteamOS model, which clocks this as the first ever third-party handheld besides Valve's own Steam Deck. But unlike the Windows version that drops later in the month, we're going to have to wait until May to get our hands on the SteamOS version.

Where can you buy the Lenovo Legion Go S?

The Lenovo Legion Go S is available to pre-order for $729.99 from Best Buy. High-end gaming doesn’t need a massive price tag. We get that it's still a lot of money, but players are getting a lot of bang for their buck.

Lenovo's ordering page for the Windows 11 Legion Go S is still hanging out with a "coming soon" banner, but having the page itself is a step in the right direction.

Nitty gritty pricing details

More good news is that many models of the new Lenovo Legion Go S will be more affordable compared to the $749.99 price of the current Lenovo Legion Go.

The Windows-based version, launching this month, will come in at $729.99 with the 8-inch display and 1TB storage. Lenovo mentioned other Windows configurations will come in May, with an expected starting price of $599.99.

The more expensive version uses an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor which is the same CPU as the standard Legion Go. Less expensive models will have an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor.

When it comes to the SteamOS models, we're in for lower prices, starting at $499.99 in May with the same 8-inch display, 1TB storage, and an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor.

Lenovo's other exciting announcement

Also at CES, Lenovo also packed along a prototype of the new Legion Go 2, which they've slated as a "refined" version of the original. With an 8.8-inch display and detachable controllers, the handheld is fairly similar to the original model but comes with some pretty nice improvements like a more ergonomic soft plastic coating and a new fingerprint reader. It'll also come with a new OLED display and an 8-direction D-pad.

Lenovo didn't announce pricing on the new Legion Go 2, but said we should expect a release sometime in 2025.

Lenovo Legion Go S could dethrone the ASUS ROG Ally X, and you can pre-order it now

Fri, 01/10/2025 - 11:52

PRE-ORDER NOW: The Lenovo Legion Go S, available to pre-order for $729.99 from Best Buy, offers powerful specs like the AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. Releasing Feb. 14, it packs more features at a lower price than many competitors, including the ASUS ROG Ally X.

Opens in a new window Credit: Lenovo Lenovo Legion Go S Pre-order for $729.99 from Best Buy Get Deal

In my opinion, the Lenovo Legion Go S might be the smartest preorder of the year. Why? It offers massive specs, a bigger screen, and a lower price point than many of its competitors in the handheld gaming space. At $729.99 on Best Buy, it’s not just another entry into the PC handheld market, it’s a clear statement. High-end gaming doesn’t need a sky-high price tag. Well, it's still a lot of money, but players are getting some bang for their buck.

Take ASUS ROG Ally X, for example. At $799.99, it’s a fantastic device with a Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 24GB RAM, and a 7-inch screen. But here’s the thing: the Legion Go S steps up the game with 32GB of RAM, a larger 8-inch PureSight display, and the Ryzen Z2 Go processor, built specifically for this handheld. Oh, and did I mention it’s $70 cheaper?

SEE ALSO: CES 2025: Here's how to get your hands on the new Lenovo Legion Go S

Lenovo Legion Go S is a powerhouse that can play hard. With a 120Hz refresh rate and VRR, smooth gameplay, vibrant colors, and razor-sharp details aren't an issue for most titles. While the Ally X boasts a higher-tier processor, the Z2 Go more than holds its own, making the Go S a value-packed option for anyone who wants top-tier gaming performance without the extra cost.

Why do I think the Legion Go S is worth preordering? The Legion Space feature lets you tweak power modes, resolutions, and even joystick sensitivity mid-game. Want longer battery life? Pick a better performing setting. Need sharper graphics for your favourite competitive game? No mither. You can easily hop between Xbox Game Pass, Steam, and more thanks to it running on Windows 11.

What about connectivity? The dual USB-C 4.0 ports aren’t just for charging. They’re eGPU-compatible, meaning you can supercharge this handheld with desktop-level graphics when docked. That’s a feature you’d usually expect on much pricier devices.

Sure, the ASUS ROG Ally X has its perks. Dolby Atmos sound, advanced cooling, and a slim, ergonomic design for all-day comfort. However, Legion Go S offers a more future-proof package. Lenovo has even hinted at Steam OS support in the future, which could unlock even more power for this handheld.

The Lenovo Legion Go S boldly makes a case for itself as the most versatile and value-packed handheld PC on the market. With three months of Xbox Game Pass included it’s ready to deliver endless gaming from day one.

Pre-order now for $729.99; you’ll have it by Feb. 14, 2025. Trust me, this is one device you don’t want to miss out on. Lenovo’s bringing the heat, are you ready to go? (Not sorry)

How to watch A Real Pain: Jesse Eisenbergs second feature film is headed to streaming

In an era of movies so long they require a literal intermission, a brisk 90-minute dramedy is a breath of fresh air. Written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, A Real Pain strikes a delicate balance between the various highs and lows of the story and allows each of the main characters to fully develop, all while clocking in under two hours. It stars Eisenberg himself alongside Kieran Culkin, who has already won a Golden Globe for his performance and is now nominated for a SAG award.

A Real Pain dives into family relationships, cultural heritage, trauma, and purpose while set against a gorgeous backdrop of a trip to Poland. And as our reviewer put it, "Honesty and healing are both the journey and the destination."

Searchlight Pictures released the family dramedy on digital platforms at the end of 2024 just shy of two months after its theatrical debut. Now, it's officially coming to streaming. Here's everything you need to know about how to watch A Real Pain at home (and maybe even for free).

What is A Real Pain about?

The Sundance hit A Real Pain follows estranged cousins Benji (Culkin) and David Kaplan (Eisenberg) who travel to Poland to learn more about their late grandmother, a Holocaust survivor. The perfect odd couple pairing, detail-oriented and professional David and charismatic slacker Benji have drifted apart after an inseparable childhood. The trip, which was written in their grandmother's will, has potential to bring them closer to each other as well as their family history. "Yes, A Real Pain is a movie about remembering the Holocaust, but it’s funny and heartwarming, a rare combination when considering the subject matter," Mashable Contributor Monica Castillo writes in her review.

Check out the official trailer for a sneak peek:

Is A Real Pain worth watching?

It may not have the Hollywood hype of some other awards contenders, but A Real Pain shines where it counts — critics and audiences both love it. Currently sitting with a 96 percent critic rating and 81 percent audience rating at Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is being praised for its balance of humor and emotional depth. Not to mention, Culkin has already won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Male Actor and is nominated for the same category at the SAG Awards.

Our reviewer writes, "It’s short and sweet, striking a delicate balance between the heaviness of the cousins’ trip and the pair’s mismatched dynamic. And like many vacations, A Real Pain feels like it’s over too soon, but it lasts just long enough to avoid overstaying its welcome. It’s a bittersweet tribute to the journeys our ancestors took to bring us to where we are today and coping with the troubled relationships we may share with our present-day relatives. "

Silo Season 2, episode 9: What is the safeguard?

Fri, 01/10/2025 - 10:00

Well, Silo Season 2, episode 9 was a lot to unpack.

Things in both silos are now reaching a boiling point, with Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) prepping for her trip back outside after that Solo (Steve Zahn) reveal and things tipping towards a full-scale riot in her home silo. But while it's all been kicking off, newly promoted head of IT shadow Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) has been trying to solve his own mystery.

And by the end of episode 9, it looks like he may finally have some answers.

SEE ALSO: 'Silo' Season 2, episode 2: What does Bernard's book on The Order say? What happens to Lukas at the end of episode 9?

Since being promoted to shadow, Lukas has been trying to crack a code left by previous head of IT Salvador Quinn — the same code that Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie) solved 25 years ago. By episode 9 he's managed it, revealing the following message (a part of which we see scrawled in his notebook):

"...reason to be damned. If you don't believe me go to the very bottom of the silo. Find the tunnel. You will get confirmation there."

Later, a rattled Lukas says "the life of the silo" depends on him finding the mayor. But when he's told the mayor isn't to be disturbed until that evening, he takes matters into his own hands and heads down to the bottom of the silo. When he finds the tunnel mentioned in the note, though, he suddenly hears a robotic-sounding voice address him by name.

"Before you, only three people have reached this door," says the voice. "Salvador Quinn, Mary Meadows, and George Wilkins. I did not speak with Wilkins. Quinn and Meadows were both given the same directive you will now receive. If you speak to anyone about this conversation, or what you have seen down here, we will have no choice but to initiate the safeguard. Do you know what the safeguard is, Mr. Kyle?"

Lukas' nervous response? "I do."

Who is the voice that speaks to Lukas?

The short answer is we don't know. But we can make some guesses. As Lukas discusses with Bernard (Tim Robbins) earlier in the episode, we now know there are multiple silos. Fifty-one, to be exact. Whoever speaks to Lukas appears to have some kind of higher authority, given that they've been issuing "directives" to Silo 18's heads of IT. Is it possible that whoever speaks to Lukas is the head of IT at a different silo? Maybe one that has authority over all the other silos?

The other option is that the voice might not belong to a person at all. It sounds faintly robotic, so there's always the chance that it belongs to some kind of omnipotent artificial intelligence that has control over all the silos.

What is the safeguard?

When the voice refers to "the safeguard," it's clearly a threat. If Lukas tells anyone about what he's heard or seen, they'll have "no choice but to initiate" it. Clearly, the safeguard isn't something designed to keep the occupants of Silo 18 safe. So what exactly is it?

Once again, we don't know for sure yet. Clearly it's something that was in Quinn's code, and the phrase we see on Lukas' notes — "...reason to be damned" — seems ominous. What seems just as ominous is the fact that Quinn, the former head of IT, felt that he needed to hide its meaning in code, as well as the fact that whatever Judge Meadows learned when she cracked the code drove her to start drinking.

In a nutshell, whatever the safeguard is, it's something that makes the occupants of Silo 18 who learn of it feel helpless and afraid. Maybe it's a safeguard aimed at protecting the owner of the voice, and the other silos, if they feel that Silo 18 is starting to get out of control?

Silo Season 2, episode 9: What really happened to Solo?

Fri, 01/10/2025 - 10:00

Silo Season 2 is nearing its end, and the main mysteries are starting to reveal themselves.

One of the big ones, which has been a question mark since the start of the second season? The real identity of Solo (Steve Zahn), the somewhat erratic occupant of Silo 17's vault who Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) meets in the first episode.

After some ambiguity over whether he's a friend or a foe, episode 9 finally reveals who exactly Solo is. And the reveal is way more upsetting than we were expecting.

SEE ALSO: 'Silo' Season 2, episode 3: Who is Solo? Who is Solo, really?

Back in episode 3, Solo told Juliette that he was the shadow of Silo 17's head of IT, Russell. "Russell told me don't — no matter what — never let anyone in the vault," he tells Juliette. "Ever."

There were some signs even then that he may not be telling Juliette the whole truth, but in episode 8 we finally learn exactly what Solo was lying about. He was never the head of IT's shadow, because he was only 12 years old at the time the rebellion took place.

Solo's real name is, in fact, Jimmy. He's Russell's son.

What happened when Solo was a child?

After revealing to Juliette and the young survivors holding him hostage that he only killed their parents out of self-defense when they broke into the vault and shot him, Solo finally reveals what happened to him during the rebellion.

"Jimmy was a coward," he says. "Jimmy hid behind a door while the sheriff held a gun to his father's head. All he had to do was open the door and he didn't, so... Does that sound like the son of a hero to you? Russell would have been ashamed to have a son like that."

Solo/Jimmy's story is accompanied by a fairly upsetting flashback from the day of the rebellion. In it we see a young Jimmy standing in the vault, looking out through the window in terror as the rebellion's leader holds a gun to his father's head before pulling the trigger.

This flashback goes a long way to explaining Solo's behaviour in Season 2, from his craving for human interaction to his obsession with protecting the vault. It's why his moods swing so dramatically, jumping from excitable bursts to sudden angry flare-ups. In a way, although he's aged physically, Solo is still that traumatised 12-year-old boy watching his father get killed. The moment has trapped him in a childlike state.

His decision to let Juliette and Silo 17's other occupants into the vault at the end? Hopefully that's a sign that he may finally be able to start healing.

How to watch: Silo is streaming now on Apple TV+ with new episodes releasing weekly.

Los Angeles wildfires destruction shown in satellite images

Fri, 01/10/2025 - 09:32

The Los Angeles wildfires continue to burn out of control, with the death toll now at seven and expected to climb. Nearly 180,000 people have been ordered to evacuate and at least 10,000 buildings have been destroyed, L.A. Sheriff Robert Luna stating in a press conference that some of the impacted areas "look like a bomb was dropped in them."

Now satellite imagery is providing a look at the destruction caused by the fires — devastation which is likely to grow. The strong winds and dry conditions which have fuelled California's wildfires are predicted to continue until the middle of next week, with gusts of 55 mph forecast for Thursday night. The fires remain largely uncontained despite firefighters' tireless efforts, with the emergency responders also having been hindered by a lack of water.

The Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades is currently the largest wildfire threatening L.A., and is estimated to be nearly 20,000 acres (over 31 sq mi) in size.

The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 5 Texas Longhorns will face off in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff (CFP). The matchup will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Friday, January 10, and is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT.

Ohio State is 12-2 overall and coming off back-to-back CFP wins. First, the Buckeyes had a commanding 42-17 win over the Tennessee Vols in the first round, followed by a second commanding 41-21 win over the Oregon Ducks.

Texas is 13-2 and also coming off back-to-back wins over the Clemson Tigers and Arizona State Sun Devils. The Longhorns win over the Sun Devils was much closer, going to double overtime after a controversial non-targeting call that could have given the Sun Devils a chance to win the game before overtime. The Longhorns are the last SEC team left in the CFP bracket, another point of contention for fans of the major conference who have so far hated the new 12-team playoff format.

Protect your digital life: Key strategies for online safety

Fri, 01/10/2025 - 00:17

We all know how ingrained the internet has become in day-to-day life. However, as the world becomes more connected, online threats grow more and more sophisticated. This means protecting your personal and financial data is more critical than ever, but also more complicated than ever.

Here are some key strategies to help you stay secure and maintain your peace of mind online:

Use strong, unique passwords for every account

Passwords are the first line of defence against unauthorised access to your accounts. Yet, many users still reuse simple passwords across multiple platforms, making them easy targets for hackers. To enhance your security, create strong, unique passwords for every account – combining letters, numbers and special characters. Using a password manager to securely store and generate complex passwords ensures that you never need to rely on memory or repetition. Password managers can be bought as standalone subscriptions, but are also normally included security suites such as Bitdefender Premium Security and Bitdefender Ultimate Security.

Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication (MGA) and two-factor authentication (2FA) add an additional layer of security to your accounts by requiring a second form of verification beyond just a password. This could be a one-time code sent to your phone, a biometric scan, or an app-based authenticator. With MFA or 2FA enabled, even if your password is compromised, unauthorised access is nearly impossible without the secondary credential. Lean more about enabling MFA here.

Be aware of phishing attempts

Phishing is a common online threat where scammers trick users into providing sensitive information by posing as legitimate entities. These scams often appear as emails, text messages or even fake websites. To counter this threat, educate yourself in identifying phishing scams, and use detection tools like Bitdefender’s Scam Copilot, which identifies and blocks scams in your email, browser, messages and other apps. Scam Copilot is included in Bitdefender’s Premium and Ultimate security suites.

Keep your software updated

Outdated software makes you a prime target for cybercriminals looking to exploit vulnerabilities. Whether it’s your operating system, browser, apps and even antivirus software, keeping everything up to date ensures that you benefit from the latest security patches and features. Most software platforms offer automatic updates – make sure this is enabled to stay protected without the hassle of manual checks.

Use comprehensive security software

Investing in reliable security software is one of the best ways to safeguard your devices. At the bare minimum, you should get a no-frills antivirus like Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, which will keep you protected against malware, spyware and ransomware. Meanwhile, security suites like Bitdefender Premium Security and Bitdefender Ultimate Security bundle in many other useful tools, such as Scam Copilot scam detection, unlimited VPN, password manager and more. Read more about security suites here.

Practice safe browsing habits

Cybercriminals often exploit risky online behaviour to gain access to sensitive information. Avoid clicking on suspicious links, downloading files from unverified sources, or visiting unsecured websites. While the presence of the HTTPS padlock in the browser no longer indicate that the website is safe to visit, it's still a good indicator that the data you are about to enter will not be intercepted as it goes to its destination. Never submit sensitive information on sites that do not offer HTTPS connections. You should also limit the amount of personal information you share online to minimise your exposure to potential attacks.

Educate yourself and stay informed

At the end of the day, online safety begins with you. Stay informed about the latest online threats. Since you’re reading this article, you already know that PCMag is a great place to start. Cybersecurity providers also share information about the threats they are up against, such as on this Bitdefender blog. Knowledge is power, and by educating yourself, you can proactively defend against potential risks.

Stay safe out there!

How to check the air quality near you amid the Los Angeles wildfires

Thu, 01/09/2025 - 23:58

The Southern California wildfires continue to rage on, devastating areas around Los Angeles, including the Pacific Palisades, Hurst, and Pasadena.

Over 180,000 people have had to evacuate their homes, and over 2,000 buildings have been destroyed. The fires, which are widespread and windy, have yet to be contained and have been stretching the limits of firefighting resources. However, according to the Los Angeles Times, California Governor Gavin Newsom has recruited more firefighters and resources, and President Biden has supplied federal support with air tankers from the U.S. Forest Service.

SEE ALSO: You can track the Los Angeles wildfires with a free app

Meanwhile, those living in the area are undoubtedly affected by the air pollution caused by wildfire smoke. According to AirNow, which is run by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Park Service, NASA, Centers for Disease Control, and other federal agencies, the air quality index (AQI) in the Los Angeles area is listed as "Unhealthy" measuring at 188 PM2.5. The site's recommendation for this AQI level is to minimize outdoor activity, especially if you have symptoms or belong to a sensitive group.

AirNow is a great resource for checking the AQI index, but it's not the only one. Below, we've compiled some of the best sites and apps for checking air quality.

The Weather app for iPhone users

Did you know that Apple's native Weather app provides air quality information? If you open a location and scroll past the weekly forecast, you'll find the air quality index. If you click on the widget, you'll get more granular information about pollutant details and any pertinent health information.

The World Air Quality Index Project

The World Air Quality Index Project is a collaboration of environmental agencies worldwide. Its site compiles air quality data from 50,000 monitoring stations in 132 countries to provide real-time AQI stats worldwide. However, you can also visit specific areas monitored by local stations and get detailed current and historical information from each device.

AirNow

AirNow is a collaborative effort of federal agencies that provides air quality data across the U.S. The site also has up-to-date information about the wildfires, resources, data, and interactive maps to help users learn more about particular areas and how they might be affected. There's also a free AirNow mobile app.

Air quality apps

A quick iOS or Android app store search will yield numerous results for well-reviewed air quality apps. Unlike government-funded sites, these apps are a bit more polished and provide more features and ways to personalize your preferences. For example, several apps, such as IQAirAir Matters, and the Plume Labs app, provide multi-day air quality forecasts, and Paku provides hyperlocal real-time AQI data.

There are also apps specifically designed for tracking wildfires, such as Firesource and Watch Duty, which provide real-time data about fire perimeters, evacuation orders, wind conditions, and air quality.

Those who qualify must start their return by selecting a Free File option from the IRS' website (taxpayers will not find the free service on the website of a tax preparer that has partnered with the IRS to participate in Free File; in 2025, those partners include TaxHawk, TaxSlayer, 1040Now and ezTaxReturn).

Though taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less can utilize Free File, the IRS noted that each partner has its own eligibility criteria based on age, state residency, and military status, among other factors. Some providers may also offer free preparation of state tax returns.

Once Free File is open for use, taxpayers can prepare their returns and hold them until the official IRS tax season begins later in January.

The IRS' Free File Fillable forms, which are electronic versions of common IRS paper forms, will be accessible to all starting Jan. 27 — taxpayers who don't qualify for Free File can use the fillable forms should they feel comfortable preparing their own taxes independently.

"Over the years, Free File has helped millions of taxpayers, providing a fast and simple way to file their returns," IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in the agency's statement.

American Primeval review: Can Netflixs grimy Western mini-series best Yellowstone?

Thu, 01/09/2025 - 22:11

American Primeval is decently entertaining as an action-drama, though it's quite fascinating in concept. The Netflix mini-series, created by Mark L. Smith and directed by Peter Berg, features an accomplished ensemble playing mostly familiar archetypes during a pre-Civil War struggle for the American West. However, it saps anything resembling wistfulness from its Hollywood Western roots, complicating its chances of cornering the post-Yellowstone market (alongside the latter's many spin-offs). What's left is the husk of a beloved genre, told in stark, chaotic hues seldom seen on-screen.

The show's numerous subplots are connected by grisly happenstance, albeit not much else. It's a violent saga, even though its violence quickly plateaus. This goes for both its physical brutality, as well as the many cruel ideologies in its crosshairs, from white supremacy and religious fundamentalism to a general penchant for war. But that these are so nakedly on display, in a show this unapologetically grim, is a welcome surprise, from a setting and storytelling mode so otherwise steeped in nostalgia. Despite its threads unraveling in haphazard ways, the series is never boring, and never wanting for a good performance.

The story of American Primeval, which takes place in the winter of 1857, is based on real locations and events, albeit with necessary dramatizations. With a bounty on her head for an alleged murder, well-to-do mother Sara Rowell (Betty Gilpin) absconds from Philadelphia with her pre-teen son Devin (Preston Mota) to meet up with her husband out west. But upon arriving at Fort Bridger — a real fur trading outpost in Wyoming along the Oregon Trail — she learns that her guide has already left, leading her to desperately search for safe passage wherever she can find it.

The fort is not far from volatile conflicts between numerous factions. The Shoshone Tribe is one of several who have been driven from their native land by constant war. A ruthless Mormon militia patrols the territories near Utah, at the behest of the expansionist, extremist preacher Governor Brigham Young (a terrifying Kim Coates). Meanwhile, the conscientious U.S. Army Captain Edmund Dellinger (Lucas Neff) tries to keep the peace, but he's growing increasingly cynical about the possibility of coexistence (as we're frequently reminded, through his numerous diary entries narrated in voiceover).

The aforementioned groups only account for about half the series' characters, all of whom are set up bit-by-bit through very direct exposition. Additionally, there's the lone gunman from whom Sara seeks help, the lonely and brooding Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), who shares an intimate history with the Shoshone. There are the bounty hunters on her trail, led by Virgil Cutter (Jai Courtney), a leader whose heartlessness clashes with his more empathetic protégé Lucas (Andrew P. Logan).

There are the various militiamen and Mormon leaders, and there are also Mormon civilians just trying to find their way unscathed. Some of the latter end up inadvertently attacked when traveling with a larger caravan, including newlywed Abish Pratt (Saura Lightfoot-Leon) and her husband Jacob (Dane DeHaan), whose increasingly bloody and disheveled appearance each episode is as ludicrously funny as Homer Simpson hitting infinite rocks and tree branches. And of course, there's Jim Bridger himself, the founder of the aforementioned fort, played with smarm and panache by the ever-delightful Shea Whigham.

The show also features a number of Native characters who, although they're seldom allowed to leave the strict confines of plot function — American Primeval is an anti-Western in every way but this — still displays a beating humanity and ethos. There's the young, nonverbal Shoshone girl Two Moons (Shawnee Pourier), a runaway who hitches a ride with Sara and Devin, and there's also rogue Shoshone warrior Red Feather (Derek Hinkey), who forms his own tribe intent on trading blood for blood. If the latter sounds a whole lot like a central character in Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, his appearance isn't the only time you'll be making that comparison.

If anything, the show plays like a morbid and cynical answer to Horizon, the film series that Costner left Yellowstone in order to make, and one that wrestles with the violence inherent to America's founding myths while still morosely holding on to a folkloric image of the nation's past. American Primeval has less trouble removing its rose-tinted glasses, even going as far as to deploy rearrangements of Woody Guthrie's famous folk song "This Land Is Your Land" to deeply ironic effect. However, it struggles just as much as Costner's film when it comes to switching between its numerous characters.

The show's structure and plot might mirror Costner's Western epic, but its closest aesthetic cousins are actually Alejandro González Iñárritu's own violent winter Western The Revenant (which Mark L. Smith also notably penned) and, in terms of frenetic editing, the Star Wars films of J.J. Abrams. That second comparison is, for the most part, complimentary. American Primeval charges forth with reckless abandon, leaving little room to consider the actual time and space between people spread across different parts of the landscape. That's not always a good thing, but it means each new plot development is always just around the corner, with characters always ready to stumble into each other's stories.

On the other hand, the lack of actual travel time or any sort of downtime for the characters, even across six hours, leaves little room for them to unravel and develop. Gilpin and Kitsch, for instance, are suitably austere, resulting in Jane Austen-esque romantic tensions, but who they are as people is established from minute one, and remains frozen in stasis throughout the story. The same is true for most characters except DeHaan's, who has the advantage of being changed by physical injury. No one is really affected or impacted, in human ways, by the show's many goings-on.

That said, those goings on are usually fun to watch, from gritty firefights in unbroken takes to vicious hand-to-hand combat in close quarters. Emmanuel Lubezki's Oscar–winning cinematography for The Revenant was clearly the prototype here, with short-lensed close-ups skewing space and enhancing the impact of everything from blood to spittle, all covered in snow. The first episode is wonderfully chaotic, with its quick cuts and askew Dutch angles throwing everything off-balance as civilians are engulfed by attacks. Unfortunately, this visual approach ends up somewhat indiscriminate across the series, even during mundane conversations.

The show's washed-out palette and permeating muck and grime paint America's infancy as a time of petty squabble without absolution — a counter-narrative to most of the country's mythology about itself. However, the show also builds in a kind of narrative backstop to prevent it from falling into total despair: the American dream is still, in a sense, alive, but it's relegated to the four walls of Fort Bridger.

The fort, which appears early on in the series and becomes a frequent respite from the action, very much exists in the vein of cinema's lawless Old West, with its saloons, and shootings, and hangings. But it's also representative of an American ideal. It's the only place in the show where characters from all walks of life, and all backgrounds (white, Native, or otherwise) can congregate, take refuge from religious extremism, and have an actual shot at living.

It's also the center of a beautifully haunting climax that revels in the slow demise of said ideals, which makes for a pitch-perfect conclusion to the show — or would have, had the series chosen to end on this symbolic note. Instead, it returns to one of its many ongoing narratives so that Person A can wander into Story B and conclude Subplot C, most of which jog in place for multiple episodes.

While American Primeval occasionally wields its metaphors with skill, it is, for the most part, a banal and obvious show about the trickle-down effects of the past. For instance, Courtney's Cutter, when addressing Sara, all but turns to the camera in order to deliver the line, "Our current circumstances are a reflection of our past decisions." The problem with this sort of delivery — other than its thuddingly literal nature — is that this theme and every other one is established in the first episode and never transforms dramatically.

American Primeval may be forward-thinking in its premise, with its apparent deconstruction of national history and self-image. However, its execution ends up with little to say, beyond the broad strokes of people's selfishness causing pain and suffering. You learn this from the get-go, so you know exactly the kind of show you're getting into from there on out, but there's little left to learn. So, even its subversions of traditional Hollywood imagery and American mythmaking feel oddly familiar and comfortable by the end.

American Primeval is now streaming on Netflix.
