Melbourne International Games Week is returning on October 4, gathering developers from far and wide for Australia's biggest week in gaming. Australia consistently punches above its weight when it comes to game development, with its hardworking indie studios having put out multiple global hits.

Yet while millions of players have enjoyed Australia's contributions to video games, many may not know where they originated.

Here are five viral video games that you might not have known come from the land down under.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Saying that Hollow Knight: Silksong was highly anticipated would be an understatement. The long-awaited sequel to the critically and commercially acclaimed Hollow Knight, Silksong crashed multiple digital storefronts upon its September 4 release, prompting fans to joke that its first boss battle was the fight to simply purchase the game. The hype around Silksong was so large that multiple other games even postponed their releases to avoid the competition.

Developed by three-person Adelaide studio Team Cherry, Hollow Knight: Silksong follows Hornet, an insect-like warrior and supporting character from 2017's Hollow Knight. Like Team Cherry's lauded debut game, Hollow Knight: Silksong also has players fight their way through a bug kingdom full of hidden secrets, deep lore, and punishingly challenging combat.

Hollow Knight sold an impressive 15 million copies in the eight years since its release, an unthinkable number to most indie developers, and developed a fervent cult following. Even so, Silksong already seems poised to surpass this achievement, attracting over 5 million players within its first five days of release.

Hollow Knight is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Hollow Knight: Silksong is available now on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch 1/2, and PC.

Schedule I

Australia has notoriously strict regulations regarding the depiction of drugs in video games. It thus seems almost ironic that the incredibly popular drug dealing simulator Schedule I came from Sydney. Reportedly selling 8 million copies within two months of its March early access launch, Schedule I gained significant momentum from popular streamers picking up the irreverent multiplayer game, with cartoonishly goofy and chaotic gameplay clips going viral.

Even more unlikely is the fact that Schedule I was developed and published by a one-person studio: TVGS, or Tyler's Video Game Studio. Judging from Schedule I's patch notes, the eponymous Tyler hasn't even graduated university yet.

Set in a nondescript city inspired by Oregon (as conceived by an Australian who has never been to the U.S.), Schedule I has players work together to build a drug empire from the ground up. This involves manufacturing narcotics, dealing to customers, setting up distribution systems, and, of course, running from the cops. Its satisfyingly addictive gameplay loop is great fun to dive into with friends, providing fertile ground for shenanigans, and despite the subject matter it never feels too dark.

Schedule I is now available in early access on PC.

Cult of the Lamb

Developed by Melbourne-based Massive Monster, Cult of the Lamb thoroughly indoctrinated players upon its August 2022 release. The roguelike action game/cult builder/single parent simulator reportedly sold around 4.5 million copies within two years of launch, and has become publisher Devolver Digital's most profitable intellectual property.

In Cult of the Lamb, players control a lamb who has been tasked with establishing a cult to free an imprisoned eldritch god. Doing so requires venturing fourth and fighting your way through dungeons, defeating the gods' jailors as well as collecting resources to help build your cult a strong base. Then once you return home, there's food to grow, housing and facilities to build, and rituals to perform. There might also be poop to clean up, because apparently your cultists have no qualms about leaving their messes for you to deal with.

Despite the sinister subject matter, Cult of the Lamb approaches everything with a lighthearted attitude and humour, featuring cute artwork and incredibly inept, poop-eating cultists. 

Cult of the Lamb is available now on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Unpacking

Though Unpacking may have seemed unassuming upon its 2021 release, it soon gained widespread recognition for its excellent environmental storytelling. The game sold over one million copies within a year of its launch, 100,000 of those within the first 10 days, and many of those by streamers.

Developed by Brisbane studio Witch Beam, Unpacking is a puzzle game in which players unpack moving boxes, arranging items in a person's new home. An arduous chore such as this might not be the most obvious inspiration for enjoyable gameplay. Yet while its concept seems simple, Unpacking cleverly uses its mechanics to tell a story that's moving in more ways than one.

Following one person as they undertake multiple moves over more than a decade, players learn about their lives and relationships through what is packed, what is left behind, and where items are ultimately placed. You don't see any of the characters in person throughout the game, and there's scant dialogue. Yet ask anyone who has played Unpacking about the protagonist's boyfriend in the infamous 2010 level, and it's likely that they'll have very strong feelings on the matter.

Unpacking is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.

Untitled Goose Game

Untitled Goose Game turned the internet denizens into horrible geese in 2019, with gamers eager to terrorise a small English village and cause problems on purpose. Developed by four-person Melbourne studio House House, the lighthearted puzzle stealth game casts players as the world's most disagreeable avian, armed with an insolent beak, resolute waddle, and almighty honk.

Immaculately scored with an adaptive soundtrack of Debussy’s Préludes, Untitled Goose Game invites players to stick their terrible snake necks everywhere they are unwelcome, stealing items, making messes, and bullying both children and adults alike. It's pure, unadulterated mischief, fueled by the type of hubris and devilry that can only be found within a contemptuous goose.

Garnering viral attention from its first trailer in October 2017, Untitled Goose Game still retained gamers' interest by its September 2019 release, selling over one million copies within its first three months. It continued to go further viral as well, with numerous streamers jumping in to wreck goose-orchestrated havoc.

Untitled Goose Game is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The moon is officially getting brighter, and it will be every night until the next full moon. It may be very faint tonight, but it is there, because we're on day one of the lunar cycle.

The lunar cycle is a series of eight unique phases of the moon's visibility. The whole cycle takes about 29.5 days, according to NASA, and these different phases happen as the Sun lights up different parts of the moon whilst it orbits Earth.

What is today’s moon phase?

As of Monday, Sept. 22, the moon phase is Waxing Crescent, and according to NASA's Daily Moon Observation, there's just 1% visible tonight.

Unfortunately, there's still not enough of the moon lit up to spot anything on the moon's surface tonight, but it will continue getting brighter as we move through the cycle.

When is the next full moon?

The next full moon will be on Oct. 6. The last full moon was on Sept. 7.

What are moon phases?

According to NASA, moon phases are caused by the 29.5-day cycle of the moon’s orbit, which changes the angles between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Moon phases are how the moon looks from Earth as it goes around us. We always see the same side of the moon, but how much of it is lit up by the Sun changes depending on where it is in its orbit. This is how we get full moons, half moons, and moons that appear completely invisible. There are eight main moon phases, and they follow a repeating cycle:

New Moon - The moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).

Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

First Quarter - Half of the moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-moon.

Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it’s not quite full yet.

Full Moon - The whole face of the moon is illuminated and fully visible.

Waning Gibbous - The moon starts losing light on the right side.

Last Quarter (or Third Quarter) - Another half-moon, but now the left side is lit.

Waning Crescent - A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before going dark again.

How to play Pips

If you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity for how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible – and common – for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

• Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.

• Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.

• Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.

• Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.

• Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

Number (12): Everything in this space must add to 12. The answer is 4-6, placed vertically; 6-3, placed horizontally.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles was originally available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it, but it was later taken down, with the website's creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times. However, the New York Times then rolled out its own Wordle Archive, available only to NYT Games subscribers.

There are five rounds to the game. The first round sees you trying to guess the word, with correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters shown in each guess. If you guess the correct answer, it'll take you to the next hurdle, providing the answer to the last hurdle as your first guess. This can give you several clues or none, depending on the words. For the final hurdle, every correct answer from previous hurdles is shown, with correct and misplaced letters clearly shown.

Even users who were into the new look expressed concern about updating as people reported more bugs, hoping to wait out the upgrade until Apple shipped its first fixes to the new operating system.

So is it possible to go back if you've already taken the plunge? The answer is complicated.

Earlier this year, posts from iOS 26 beta testers showed people clamoring for a way to rollback the update as phones glitched and performance snags got in the way of everyday use, prompting publications and techies to publish multiple guides to resetting their devices. And, as CNET noted in its coverage, WatchOS users found they could not rollback the update at all.

For users on the new, full iOS 26 product, it may be even more complicated.

According to a MacRumors forum post, users who want to downgrade back to iOS 18 will first need to make sure they have a full device backup from the previous iOS, not a backup from iOS 26 — and come to terms with potentially losing all of their data in the process.

From there, user @orsev explained, users will go through a somewhat vexing process of downloading the previous iOS as an .ipsw file using a developer account, restoring their device in a hard reboot, and reinstalling the old iOS using an archived backup.

Tech aficionados will probably have an easier time with this, but for the average user, it may be best to just stick it out until the next major iOS 26 update. In the meantime, you might as well make those lock screens and group chats really cute.

Users have also come up with quick fixes for some of its other quirks — including taking advantage of Apple's robust accessibility settings to adjust the transparency and movement of apps and unlocking home screens. Unfortunately, the search bar isn't one of them.

From the first musical moments of The Testament of Ann Lee, I was enraptured. Admittedly, I went in knowing nothing of its subject, an 18th-century religious figure who led the Shakers, a sect also known as the "Shaking Quakers" because of the physicality of their worship. However, the opening thrums of music and the graceful yet powerful thrust of bodies in an inexplicable dance number in a dark forest entranced me and made me eager to know more. 

From this intriguing opening, The Testament to Ann Lee stretches beyond the bounds of historical drama by embracing the music and movements that define the Shaker religious practice. In that, wonder is born onscreen, reflecting their faith in a God that honors such performance as exaltation. 

Written by The Brutalist's screenwriters Mona Fastvold and Brady Corbet, this is a sweeping American tale of love, faith, community, and creativity that is challenging, enchanting, and awe-inspiring. 

The Testament of Ann Lee reveals the birth of a religious community in America. 

Helmed by Fastvold, The Testament of Ann Lee charts the life of the eponymous religious leader, not only through dramatic scenes of hardship and joy but also through musical numbers that reflect the Shakers' culture. 

As a young girl in England, Ann is horrified by her vicious father, in both his prohibiting the speech of his many children, but also in his dominion over his wife's body for his own sexual desires. Still, as a young maiden, Ann (Seyfried) strives to be a good wife to her rugged husband (Christopher Abbott), giving in to his demand for sex despite her own lack of interest. That is, until a series of miscarriages convinces her that chastity, hard work, and song is a better way for her to serve God. 

This belief will earn her devoted followers, including her brother William (Thunderbolt*'s Lewis Pullman), the resolute Mary (Thomasin McKenzie), and an American preacher (Tim Blake Nelson). However, as this boundary-pushing woman preaches of God and these tenets from England to New York, she will earn her the ire of her lusty husband and the violent rejection of those unmoved by the Shakers' song. 

Amanda Seyfried is a marvel in The Testament of Ann Lee. 

Seyfried is no stranger to musicals, but this one is very different from the Broadway adaptations she's starred in before. Forget the bouncy glee of Mamma Mia! or the resounding theatricality of Les Misérables. The motions here feel more akin to modern dance, the song more mantra then belted or cheered.

Limbs of conservatively dressed Shakers shoot forth sharply, pausing in the air as if awaiting a signal or a sign, then plunging in a new direction. Their bodies rise and fall in a rhythm they create through their shared song. In the film's opening, they move through a forest, dancing in unison, throbbing together like one living organism. Through this connection in movement, Fastvold instantly and effectively communicates that this is a community that lives, loves, and suffers together. 

This sentiment of union through hardship is bolstered with every successive song-and-dance number. For instance, when Ann endures a series of miscarriages, a song, deep-throated and aching, pulls her through one to the next, the motions of sex, birth, and loss connecting across scenes to create a sense of flow and growing agony. For it's not just her loss. Others' arms embrace her across scenes of conception and birth, expressing a physical connection, but also ones that scar her. Thus, Seyfried is not just the film's center, but the core of its company. 

As Ann is resolute in her faith, Seyfried carries a certainty, whether working to construct a colony, the sect's signature chairs, or a better bond with her "children" — meaning her followers, who call her "Mother." Yet certainty doesn't make for stoicism. Seyfried's portrait is awash in jubilation, agony, and earnestness. Her eyes echo this fervor, even in climactic moments of violence. But it's in the song and dance that this role becomes extraordinary. In every motion and note, Seyfried leads the cast as Ann leads her people in the film, resolute and radiant. 

Mona Fastvold's vision in The Testament of Ann Lee is rapturous. 

Like The Brutalist, The Testament of Ann Lee tackles decades of an immigrant's life in an America that welcomes their labor and violently rejects their culture and autonomy. Set in different eras, the films work together as a timeless and dynamic diptych of this country's melting pot, sometimes warm, often scorching. But beyond America, Fastvold's film sings the song of a woman who fought without raising a fist for the sanctity of community and glory of art. 

Choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall creates movements that feel modern yet don't clash with the period piece's production design. Her dances evoke passion but not sexuality, reflecting Lee's tenets of faith. Alone, one dancer might seem strange — creating some understanding of the suspicion of the neighboring New Yorkers. But joined by the company, they become glorious, a reflection of what wonders our simple mortal figures can manifest, through work and the embrace of our souls. 

The music by composer Daniel Blumberg was inspired by Shaker hymns. Their lyrics, deceptively simple and repetitive, draw us in through the rounds. The music around them strange, experimental, yet inviting. Thus, we are welcomed in — not only to their story but to the feeling of their exuberance. 

Told in movements, broken up by title cards quoting Bible verses like "The Woman Clothed by the Sun With the Moon Under Her Feet," The Testament of Ann Lee swells and swoons like an orchestra playing an epic opera. Less an investigation into her testament and more a reveling in its passion and resilience, this drama is dynamic and dreamy. It may not make you a believer, but it may well leave you awestruck.
