Amazon removes AI-generated anime dubs after uproar

Wed, 12/03/2025 - 08:03

Amazon has quietly removed its AI-generated English dubs for several anime after days of vicious ridicule. Voice actors and anime fans alike slammed the Banana Fish, No Game No Life: Zero, and Vinland Saga AI dubs, calling them "soulless," "disrespectful," and "hilariously bad."

Clips of Amazon's AI-generated anime dubs began circulating on social media after they were added to Prime Video last month. Labelled as "AI beta" under Prime Video's audio language options, the laughably awful AI-generated voices gained significant attention and widespread mockery for their awkward, flat delivery. Numerous voice actors have lambasted Amazon's AI dubs, with the National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA) issuing a statement calling them "AI slop."

"I showed my 10 year old the AI clips of Banana Fish floating around online (no way are we ever watching Prime again)," wrote Kara Edwards, a prolific U.S. voice actor. "He cackled with laughter and is walking around unenthusiastically chanting 'no skipper nooo'. It may become this generation's The Room. It’s so embarrassing."

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Though using AI to dub any anime would not be well received, some found the decision to do it to Banana Fish particularly distasteful. Originally released in 2018, Banana Fish is a widely lauded work considered influential in LGBTQ+ manga and anime. The 24-episode anime follows the relationship between teenage gang leader Ash Lynx and Japanese photographer's assistant Eiji Okumura in New York, originally portrayed by prolific Japanese voice actors Yuma Uchida and Kenji Nojima respectively.

Fans have long hoped Banana Fish would eventually receive an official English dub. Sadly, this isn't quite what they envisaged.

"After years of fans hoping for an English dub of Banana Fish, you give it to us as AI generated garbage? It’s disrespectful as hell," voice actor Daman Mills posted on X. Mills previously worked on Amazon's English dubs of the Evangelion films. "Was a queer trauma narrative handed to a machine because paying real actors is too hard? Fix this, or I personally will not work with you as an actor EVER AGAIN on any of your dubs. This is not 'the future.' This is erasure."

"Banana Fish is one of the most heart wrenching and romantic stories ever told in anime," wrote voice actor Jacob Hopkins, sharing a screenshot of him cancelling his Prime membership. "For Amazon to implement AI for the English dub defeats the entire purpose. But of course they don’t care about the artistic meaning. Boycott Prime. Nuff said."

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

While Banana Fish was the most high profile victim of Amazon's AI dubs, it unfortunately wasn't the only anime impacted. No Game No Life: Zero and Vinland Saga also received English AI dubs, each just as terrible as the last.

Notably, unlike Banana Fish, both titles already have official human-voiced English dubs. No Game No Life: Zero has an English dub by Sentai Filmworks, while Vinland Saga actually has two: one by Sentai Filmworks and another by Netflix.

"No Game, No Life is the first anime dub I was ever cast in and @amazon is making a mockery of it," wrote voice actor Christina Kelly. "Please do not support AI."

"What hope does any aspiring voice actor have now?" said Johnny Young Bosch, one of the most well-known anime voice actors in the U.S. "Amazon has deep resources and should do better. They’re also AI dubbing over titles that already have existing dubs."

Other voice actors further expressed concerns regarding exactly how Amazon generated its AI dubs.

"Hey, what dubs were used to train this dubbing AI?" posted Briana White, best known for voicing Aerith in Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth. "Just curious if the talented actors who were fed into said AI without their knowledge or consent will be getting any credit for their work? Any money for their work? Just curious."

"Human dubbing takes skill, emotion, nuance, understanding, and human experience to create a performance that audiences connect with and respect," wrote NAVA. "These AI dubs show just how much skill and practice it really takes to connect through a voice performance and how hard it is to clone the human experience."

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Amazon removed its English AI dubs amidst this uproar, leaving English-speaking fans to either read subtitles or seek out superior, human-made English dubs elsewhere.

Even so, the issue is far from settled. Amazon also generated AI dubs for these series in Spanish, which are still available at time of writing. Voice actors and fans are calling for these Spanish AI dubs to be removed as well, criticising the removal of just the English ones as a half measure.

"[G][ive the Spanish-language one the same treatment, release a statement affirming your support for HUMAN artists and give these wonderful shows the adaptations they deserve," wrote voice actor Landon McDonald.

"It needs to be every AI dub," wrote Mills. "Not just the ones currently under fire."

This isn't the first time Amazon has dabbled in AI-generated dubs. The tech giant initially announced its pilot program for AI-generated dubs in March this year, starting with titles such as El Cid: La Leyenda and Mi Mamá Lora. The result was similarly underwhelming.

Amazon has been leaning heavily on generative AI this year. Last month it began beta testing AI-generated video recaps for some Prime Video original series, complete with AI-generated voiceover narration. In May, Amazon launched AI-generated audio summaries of products for sale on its online marketplace.

Hurdle hints and answers for December 3, 2025

Wed, 12/03/2025 - 06:00

If you like playing daily word games like Wordle, then Hurdle is a great game to add to your routine.

There are five rounds to the game. The first round sees you trying to guess the word, with correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters shown in each guess. If you guess the correct answer, it'll take you to the next hurdle, providing the answer to the last hurdle as your first guess. This can give you several clues or none, depending on the words. For the final hurdle, every correct answer from previous hurdles is shown, with correct and misplaced letters clearly shown.

An important note is that the number of times a letter is highlighted from previous guesses does necessarily indicate the number of times that letter appears in the final hurdle.

If you find yourself stuck at any step of today's Hurdle, don't worry! We have you covered.

OpenAI in “code red” after losing 6% of its users in a week due to Gemini 3, report says

Wed, 12/03/2025 - 00:05

Recently, Google introduced Gemini 3, which the company called its "most intelligent" AI model yet. So far, the AI leaderboards agree, with Gemini 3 surging ahead of rivals like ChatGPT at LMArena. Now, OpenAI head honcho Sam Altman has reportedly declared "code red" at the company in response to increased pressure from competitors.

The announcement came in the form of a memo that was leaked to The Wall Street Journal. The contents of the memo are largely unknown, but the message was direct — OpenAI has some serious competition in the likes of Gemini 3 and Anthropic’s Claude, and the company needs to do something about it.

SEE ALSO: Google Gemini 3 vs ChatGPT: How they compare

According to a post on X from former Googler Deedy Das, OpenAI has lost nearly 6 percent of its traffic since Gemini 3 launched. The data is sourced from SimilarWeb, which says that ChatGPT went from 203 million average daily visits to 191 million. If that data is accurate, it means OpenAI lost about 12 million people per day over the last week. Some of that may be due to Thanksgiving, but it's a big shift.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

The problems started months ago with some slips from the reigning champion of AI chatbots. When GPT-5 was released earlier this year, it was immediately criticized for its less friendly tone compared to earlier models. Criticism was so intense that OpenAI ultimately decided to bring back GPT-4o. The data shows that GPT-5 is more capable than its predecessors, but its lack of personality irked hardcore users who used the bot every day. Plus, OpenAI has been walking a tightrope to balance functionality and safety, which it has not done particularly well

Despite the criticisms, it seemed OpenAI was destined to keep its top spot among the AI chatbot competitors. However, Google released Gemini 3 in late November to nearly universal praise, with Google’s offerings topping nearly all of the benchmark leaderboards. Due to the sheer size and reach of Google, the company has a significant advantage in accessing training data, the lifeblood of AI models.

The competition is also ramping up on the enterprise side of things. Anthropic boasts more than 300,000 business customers as of September 2025, which includes some Fortune 500 companies.

These are all likely reasons why OpenAI is in code red; losing that many visitors is certainly noticeable. Of course, OpenAI is hardly staying still. The company is working on tons of initiatives, including inking infrastructure deals with the likes of Nvidia, Oracle, and other companies.

In November, Sam Altman wrote a long post on X addressing fears of an AI bubble and concerns that OpenAI is overextending itself.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday may be over according to the calendar, but as long as these Cyber Week TV deals are live, it's still the best time of year to buy a new TV. We're still tracking all of the best Cyber Monday deals on TVs still live at Best Buy and Amazon as of Tuesday, Dec. 2. We've found a surprising number of models still at or near their record-low prices. That includes premium Samsung OLED TVs as well as The Frame.

SEE ALSO: Where to watch the best holiday movies

The best TV deals still live are overwhelmingly on cheap QLED TVs, anywhere from 43 to 85 inches. However, a handful of Neo QLED and OLED TVs are still at Black Friday pricing, waiting to give you an at-home theater experience while you avoid leaving the house this winter. So, if you see a leftover deal that you like, buy it now, as there's no guarantee that these Cyber Monday TV deals will stay on sale for the rest of the week.

Psst: If you're not sure what to do with your old TV, you can recycle it at most Best Buy stores for free.

Best budget TV deal Opens in a new window Credit: Insignia Insignia 40-inch F40 Series LED Full HD Smart Fire TV $89.99 at Amazon
$149.99 Save $60.00   Get Deal Why we like it

While this budget Fire TV won't win any awards for its sound or display, it's more than capable of serving as an extra TV for your kitchen, bedroom, or guest room. This LED smart TV is powered by Amazon's Fire TV OS, giving you access to your streaming favorites and other smart features powered by Alexa.

Samsung's The Frame is often imitated, but for our money, it's still the best of the best. This award-winning art TV features a stunning matte, anti-glare display, and it's incredibly thin. This is the kind of TV you'll want to mount on the wall, and once it's there, you'll understand why our tech editor calls it the best TV in the world. For a little while longer, you can still shop Cyber Monday deals on The Frame, and we recommend you do exactly that while you can.

Best mid-sized QLED TV deal still live Opens in a new window Credit: Hisense Hisense 50-inch QD6 QLED 4K TV $199.99 at Best Buy
$329.99 Save $130 Sold out at Amazon Get Deal Why we like it

This deal really highlights why we love the Hisense TV brand so much: You can get a QLED 4K TV for under $200, and it's not even the tiniest size option. It won't wow you quite like a premium QLED would, but you'll still notice a difference from the quantum dots — particularly when watching in the daytime. This 50-inch model is great for smaller living rooms, bedrooms, and apartments, and at $199.99, it's still beating its Prime Day price by nearly $40 at Best Buy.

Best 65-inch TV deal still live Opens in a new window Credit: Samsung Samsung 65-inch S95F OLED 4K TV $2,299.99 at Best Buy
$3,299.99 Save $1,000 Comes with a free $100 gift card Get Deal Why we like it

While we do think the LG C5 is the best OLED TV you can buy right now, it hasn't been the best OLED TV deal at all this Cyber Weekend. The $1,399.99 "sale price" on the 65-inch C5 at Best Buy looks like an incredible deal until you realize that that TV had been $1,399.99 at Amazon since October. Amazon dropped the 65-inch C5's price to around $1,250 for a second, but has since bumped back up to $1,396.99.

In terms of legit record-low discounts, the 65-inch Samsung S95F OLED's $1,000 discount was new for Black Friday and has stuck around through the day after Cyber Monday. The S95F is still one of our top OLED recommendations, mostly due to its high peak brightness for an OLED TV and anti-glare matte finish that's highly effective in lit rooms.

Best 75-inch TV deal still live Opens in a new window Credit: Hisense Hisense 75-inch Canvas QLED 4K TV $697.99 at Amazon
$999.99 Save $302   Get Deal Why we like it

Now that most of the good deals on the Frame Pro have subsided, the best art TV you can still snag at Black Friday/Cyber Monday pricing is the Hisense Canvas. We appreciate the Canvas TV for being so practically priced always — for example, the 75-inch version of the 2025 Canvas TV is on sale for $400 less than the 75-inch version of last year's Frame TV.

Enticing affordability aside, we'd actively tell any gamer to choose the Hisense Canvas over The Frame because of its 144Hz refresh rate (compared to the non-Pro Frame TV's 120Hz). If you're picky about HDR, you may also be sold on Hisense's Dolby Vision support over Samsung's HDR10+ support.

Best 85-inch TV deal still live Opens in a new window Credit: TCL TCL 85-inch Class QM5K Series 4K QD-Mini LED Smart TV $729.99 at Best Buy

$2,499.99 Save $1,100.00   Get Deal Why we like it

If Samsung's flagship S95F Series OLED isn't quite in your budget (even with its $1,000 discount), then you should instead check out the S90F version, which has almost all of the same features. This TV still features a stunning OLED display and a full suite of smart features. The only real differences? The S95F has a slightly higher refresh rate and the same anti-glare matte finish as The Frame. However, the S90F still has a stunning OLED display and boasts an even bigger $1,100 discount. Trust us, you'll want to go for at least 65 inches with this model.

Best Buy's monthlong marathon of holiday deals ended yesterday, the final day of its extended Cyber Monday sale, but that doesn't mean all the deals are gone, too. I've spent the past couple weeks digging through its listings and cross-checking them with other retailers to identify all the products that are worth buying there — stuff that isn't cheaper anywhere else, even by a cent or two.

SEE ALSO: Expert-picked Cyber Monday deals: We found record prices on AirPods, Kindles, Legos, and PS5 consoles

Surprisingly, quite a few deals have remained relatively steady since Best Buy's Black Friday sale began all the way back on Nov. 20, even though Best Buy's sale is officially over. That said, there have also been some minor price raises across the board, as well as many deals jumping back up to full price — video games were especially hit hard at Best Buy.

If something you purchased at Best Buy after Oct. 31 is now cheaper there, you can request a price adjustment for it through Jan. 15 under the retailer's holiday price match guarantee.

Apple's over-ear headphones have worse specs than other noise-canceling headphones we've tested and loved, but they're certainly some of the most stylish cans you can buy. (And as of this spring, they finally support lossless audio.) Best Buy is the only place where you can still find all the colors available for $449.99 — it's not quite their record-low price of $399.99, but it's still the best price you can grab on these headphones.

Even at full price, the Lenovo Yoga 7 14 is an especially affordable 2-in-1 laptop, sitting at under $1,000. Post-Cyber Monday, its price dropped an additional $20, from $549.99 to $529.99, meaning you'll be saving 44% and scoring an extra great deal.

QLED TVs are brighter and more detailed than your average LED displays, and Mashable's Leah Stodart, our resident TV expert, recommends them for people who watch a lot of sports during the day. She named this $199.99 Hisense model the best mid-sized QLED TV deal of Cyber Monday 2025, noting that it was $40 pricier just a few weeks ago during Amazon's October Prime Day sale. (It's currently sold out there.) A sub-$200 QLED 4K TV is such a classic Cyber Weekend bargain. Best of all? The deal is still live following the end of Cyber Monday.

Our former pick for this category, the Bose QuietComfort headphones, jumped back up in price following the end of Cyber Monday. Their more premium counterpart, on the other hand, stuck to their Cyber Weekend record-low price — an especially impressive feat, considering these headphones hit the market just this past fall. Thanks to their excellent audio, comfort, and ANC, Mashable's headphones experts named these the best Bose headphones.

Can't splurge on a shiny new Apple Watch SE 3 or Oura Ring 4? While both wearables were on sale for Cyber Monday, neither is as cheap as the Fitbit Inspire 3 (now just $69.95, or 30% off), which is holding at its sale price as of Dec. 2. It's our No. 1 fitness tracker for shoppers on a budget. According to our experts, "It has a comprehensive suite of health and fitness tracking features, a slim, low-profile design, and a straightforward user interface."

RDR2 was a 2018 Game of the Year finalist, and it remains one of the most gorgeous and immersive open-world games ever made. (It's actually a prequel to the original Red Dead game from 2010, which is coming to PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, iOS, and Android on Dec. 2.) Best Buy is the only retailer holding on to a deal post-Cyber Monday — the PlayStation Store has this game back up at full price, while Target sold out of the game. It's not quite the 75% off deal we saw over Cyber Weekend, but it's still a solid price. The Xbox version is $14.99 on Amazon, though; it's sold out at Best Buy.

Though not an especially unique deal (Dyson vacuums tend to go on sale during shopping holidays), the V15 Detect Extra remains a great option for anyone who wants a vacuum with a laser but needs more dustbin space than the V12 offers. Breville's Smart Oven Air Fryer is "the Ferrari of both air fryers and convection ovens," per our reviewer. It has 11 cooking functions and a huge interior that can fit a full 13-inch pizza, and it heats food fast and evenly to boot. Best Buy has it on sale for $279.95 right now, which is 20% off its usual sticker price of $349.95. It's hit $259.95 before, but you won't find it anywhere that cheap this Cyber Monday. Amazon, Williams Sonoma, and Breville itself are all price-matching Best Buy's deal.

From AirPods to espresso machines, everything the Mashable shopping team bought during Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2025

Tue, 12/02/2025 - 23:20

The Mashable shopping team has spent day and night during the Black Friday season hunting deals, so it's a miracle that any of us found time to shop for ourselves. Now that Black Friday and Cyber Monday have wrapped up, we had to know what everyone on the team bought.

Our reporters, editors, and contributors truly shopped the sales. Among the purchases is a delightful mix of the boring essentials, holiday gifts, and little things to treat ourselves. The team took advantage of big doorbuster deals like the AirPods 4 with ANC for $79 and the AirTag 4-pack for $62.99. Since we love being a little nosy and knowing what people are excited about buying, we rounded up everything the Mashable team bought during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. And PS: some of these deals are still live.

They've already arrived, and the fit is so much nicer. Black Friday and Cyber Monday have already come and gone, but some brands are keeping the deals going into Cyber Week. Thankfully, that includes Samsung, which is still offering major discounts on its popular line of QLED art TVs, aka The Frame. With both Best Buy and Amazon matching or beating these deals, you still have a little more time to grab these TVs at a discount.

This year, our tech editor named The Frame one of the best tech gifts of the year, calling it easily the best TV in the world.

Here's what Mashable Tech Editor Timothy Werth has to say about The Frame: "What makes these TVs so special? There's Art Mode, obviously. It's an ingenious idea that lets your TV function as a digital art gallery when it's not in use, so your TV actually enhances your home decor instead of subtracting from it. But the TV itself is also very good. It's unbelievably thin, and really deserves to be hung on your living room wall. On top of that, it's one of Samsung's only TVs with a special matte, anti-glare display, which makes it easier to watch TV even in direct sunlight. For all these reasons, I strongly believe it's the world's best TV right now."

We don't know how long these Cyber Monday deals on The Frame are going to be available, so shop accordingly. And for more tech deals, check out our Cyber Week Live Blog and the best Cyber Monday TV deals still live.

Honestly, as much as we love 65-inch TVs, we actually think The Frame works best in a more understated 50 or 55-inch version. And while the 2025 model is on sale, that's our top recommendation. At Amazon, Best Buy, and Samsung, you can save $300 on this award-winning QLED art TV. You'll be able to display classic artwork, gorgeous photographs, and select work from world-renowned museums like New York's Museum of Modern Art. Plus, a new AI processor results in smoother motion when watching movies and sports.

For those looking to invest in a slightly larger TV for their home, Best Buy's also offering an excellent discount on last year's 65-inch Samsung The Frame TV. This model has dropped by a whopping $1,000 as part of the retailer's Black Friday-Cyber Monday sale, allowing you to scoop it up for $999.99 instead of $1,999.99.

Samsung's 75-inch The Frame Pro is a great pickup for anyone hoping to go big this year. Over at Amazon, the Samsung 75-inch The Frame Pro has dropped from $2,997.99 to $1,997.99, saving you $1,000. It's worth noting that this TV is being sold by Walts TV. We generally don't recommend shopping with third-party sellers, so buyer beware. Check reviews and make your decision carefully.

New for 2025, the new The Frame Pro is a Neo QLED TV, which Mashable's Leah Stodart described in her CES 2025 coverage as, "Samsung's term of endearment for mini LED, which offer more precise lighting due to their ability to be individually controlled, and the fact that there are more of them (compared to larger LED bulbs)." It also comes with Samsung's Vision AI and Pantone Validated Artful Color. To learn more, check out our breakdown of what to know about Samsung's The Frame Pro from when it was released.

Everything new in the December Android 16 update: Emoji kitchen, AI notifications, parental controls

Tue, 12/02/2025 - 22:46

Google launched Android 16 back in June, and with it came a ton of features and updates. Usually, that’s all Google does until the next version, which is expected to be released in beta sometime in January or February 2026. That isn’t the case this time, as Google just announced several new features coming to Android 16 as a sort of mid-cycle refresh for the OS.

As per the norm these days, a sizable percentage of the new features will be powered by AI and leverage Gemini's ability to categorize and summarize data. The rest are extra features coming to apps like Google’s Phone and additional customizations you can use to personalize your phone even more.

Google posted not one, but two blog posts about what’s coming up, so you know it’s going to be good. To save you some clicks, here’s everything coming in the next feature-packed Android 16 update. The December Android 16 update should roll out to Pixel devices starting today (Tuesday, Nov. 2), with other Android devices getting the updates when their OEMs get around to it.

Now, Gemini can help make sense of your notifications. Credit: Google AI can manage your notifications

Two of the big changes are coming to notifications. The first one is pretty simple. Google will allow AI to summarize long notifications (such as multiple messages in a group text) into a short summary to let you know what happened when you were away. These summaries can take several texts and sum them up in a sentence or two, making them easier to scan through while checking them quickly. It seems as though this is specifically targeted at group chats with lots of messages, but it may work with other types of messages as well.

Credit: Google

The other big notification change is an organizer function. This is vaguely similar to how Gmail filters messages and looks about the same in practice. Your various notifications will be categorized into things like News, Promotions, and others, thus letting you check your notifications as you please based on what kind of stuff you want to see. It’s a small change, but as a writer who gets probably 55 emails a day, this is going to be an awesome feature for me.

Let your loved ones know its urgent. Credit: Google Mark your calls as urgent

Cell phones make phone calls, and although that isn’t what people use them for most often these days, Google still wants to make the experience as good as possible. One of the new features is the ability to mark a phone call as urgent when you place the call to communicate to the other person that this isn’t an everyday catch-up call and that they need to answer the phone.

This feature is rolling out to the Google Phone app. When you place the call, you’ll have an option to mark the call as urgent. The recipient will see that the call is urgent on their end. Even if they miss the call, it’ll be marked as urgent in their call logs, so that they know to call back as soon as they can.

Themed icons and better dark mode

One of the long-awaited and consistently asked for features is the ability to theme icons within Android. This was previously doable with icon packs, but you also needed a custom launcher to use them. Google has finally included at least some custom icon functionality in Android itself, giving users the ability to customize their homescreens further without the need for a ton of additional downloads.

Credit: Google

The themed icons have three main functions. You can customize the icon shapes, and it’ll theme the icons using the same Material 3 Expressive theming that the rest of your phone uses to theme things. This should create a more consistent and minimal icon design, giving the end user more control over how things look.

As an aside, Google also mentioned an expanded dark mode that will work on apps that don’t have a dark mode built into them already. That’s not terribly common these days, as most apps have a dedicated dark mode, but it helps smooth out those rough edges for apps that don’t.

Dip out of unwanted group chats quickly (while reporting them)

Getting pulled into a group chat can be annoying, especially when the group starts acting a fool (or worse, when it’s spam). Google Messages is getting a new feature to remove yourself from such chats as quickly as possible. This function works pretty simply. When you’re pulled into a group chat under certain conditions, like being added from an unknown number, you’ll get the option to leave the group chat straight from the chat itself, while also giving you the opportunity to block and report the number as spam.

Credit: Google Circle to Search can find spam

Speaking of spam, Google is adding another feature to help you track it down and get rid of it faster. When you receive something that you might suspect to be spam, you can active Google’s Circle to Search function and circle the message. An AI overview will pop up letting you know whether the message is likely legitimate or if it’s definitely spam. If it is spam, you know to delete, block, and report the message so you don’t get it again.

Credit: Google See emotions in Live Caption video

Live Caption already does a lot for people with hearing loss. Now, Google is expanding this functionality with what it calls Expressive Captions. The idea is pretty simple. Not only will Live Caption write what people are saying, but it will also listen to their tone of voice and show you the emotion with which people are speaking.

Credit: Google

Given that text has no tone intrinsically, it can lead to a variety of communication problems. This solves that problem by making an educated guess based on the context of the video. It likely won’t be 100 percent accurate all the time, as human emotions are complicated, but it’s still a neat idea, especially when video calling with friends.

Better parental controls

Safety and security are usually in the spotlight when it comes to Android releases, and this time is no different. Google has added some new parental controls to the Settings menu, giving parents an easier place to access such controls on a child’s device. The setting is protected by a PIN, so kids can’t easily get into it, allowing parents to configure things on the child’s device without worry that the child will get into it.

Some of the new features in this parental control settings menu will include setting the amount of screen time, scheduling downtime to lock the device for things like sleep, controlling app usage to limit time spent on apps or to block them entirely, and granting additional time if need be. Parents will also have direct links to Google Family Link, where they can set more things like app purchase approvals, location alerts, and more.

Emoji Kitchen and voice dictation in Gboard

The Emoji Kitchen is a neat little idea that lets you create custom emojis by combining two existing emotes, much like that silly Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen song from years ago. This one is pretty simple. It still functions as it did in Google’s Gboard app, but now includes new sticker combinations, including some made for the holiday season.

Look, the little monkeys are hugging each other. Credit: Google

Gboard is also making it easier to use voice dictation in Gboard. The new gesture is a two-finger double-tap, and once engaged, it will let you use voice dictation without hitting the specific microphone button on the keyboard. It’s a little thing, but the motor skill-impaired may find this useful over having to tap a small button on the keyboard. Gemini’s Smart Dictation feature will also let you type and edit text, and even shorten the text for you with the power of AI.

SEE ALSO: The best emoji of 2025 Pin your tabs in Google Chrome How to pin tabs in Google Chrome Credit: Google

This is exactly what you think it is and works exactly how you think it does. Much like the desktop version, the mobile version of Chrome now lets you pin tabs. These tabs remain even if you clear out the rest of them, allowing you to save important webpages for later. Of course, the bookmarks function also lets you do this, but this is still very useful, especially if you don’t like using bookmarks.

December Android 16 update: More miscellaneous updates

There are plenty of other small things that got looped into the update, and they’re not quite enough for their own sections, so here’s a rapid-fire list of additional small changes.

  • A shortcut for Live Caption is now available at the bottom of the volume slider.

  • The “Enhanced HDR brightness” setting now has an intensity slider letting you set it either dimmer or brighter.

  • Google’s Health Connect now automatically adds steps tracked by your device.

  • A Pixel Launcher design tweak has increased the size of the microphone, Google Lens, and AI mode icons while adding an extra dash of color.

  • Widgets make a return to the lock screen. Head to Settings > Display & touch > Lock screen > Widgets on lock screen to use them.

  • Google has updated its Guided Frames feature in the Pixel camera app to give longer, more detailed explanations when describing what’s in the frame.

  • Users can also now activate Voice Access by simply asking for it. Say “Hey Google” and then “start Voice Access” instead of hunting it down in the settings.

  • Fast Pair is extending to hearing aids made by Demant, a conglomerate that includes the brands Oticon, Sonic, and Bernafon.

There are also a host of under-the-hood changes that are aimed primarily at developers. These are too numerous to list, but you can see them yourself (along with any features we missed) on the Android Developers website. Some of them include boilerplate things like improved app performance and better battery life as well.

Android 16 is an update worth having

Despite the fact that this is still the same Android 16 that launched just a few months ago, it feels as much like a new Android update as anything I’ve seen in the last few years. There’s plenty to like here, especially the extra refinements to the design. Notification categories and themed icons win the day in terms of making OS customization and productivity feel more complete, and everything else is just icing on the cake.

Cyber Monday 2025: Live updates on deals still live from Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, Walmart, and more

Tue, 12/02/2025 - 21:51

Once upon a time, Americans lined up in droves outside Walmarts and Targets, still full from Thanksgiving dinner, so they could be first in the door at midnight. Thankfully, these frenzied Black Friday free-for-alls are a relic of a bygone era. Now, you can order all of the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals online — though not for much longer.

21 Dyson Cyber Week deals you can still shop, plus 1 to avoid at all costs: Save $330 on vacuums, $150 on beauty tools

Dyson deals are hit or miss during the two Prime Days of the year (Amazon seems to have a wonky relationship with Dyson vacuums deals, specifically). Like always, there were way better Black Friday deals on Dyson vacuums in 2025, as well as a handful of worthwhile Dyson hair tool discounts (like a rare $150 off the Airwrap i.d.).

Almost every single one of those impressive Dyson deals is still around the day after Cyber Monday — if you didn't make your move over the weekend, you've been given another chance to shave a few hundred dollars off of the brand known for being expensive.

SEE ALSO: 40+ Cyber Monday TV deals still live: Hisense Canvas, Samsung OLEDs still at Black Friday pricing on Dec. 2

Dyson's own Cyber Week sale easily has the best variety of hair tool deals and cordless stick vacuum deals, including a few exclusive deals that other retailers don't have. But Walmart's extended Cyber Monday sale does still include the same stellar deal on Mashable's favorite stick vacuum, and Amazon is in the mix, too. A few vacuums and hair tools have even gotten cheaper by $10 to $50 since we first saw them on sale on Thanksgiving.

We've rounded up all of the best Dyson Cyber Monday deals still live as of Dec. 2 and will update this guide as they taper off or sell out.

Best Dyson vacuum deal Dyson V12 Detect Slim $399.99 at Walmart
$549 Save $149.01   Get Deal at Walmart Get Deal at Amazon Get Deal at Best Buy Why we like it

Any time my favorite vacuum ever gets several hundred dollars cheaper, it's going to be the first deal I recommend. The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is currently the most affordable Dyson vacuum with the green laser, now less than $400 compared to its usual $729.99. The laser, which illuminates tiny specks and hair that aren't super visible to the naked eye, should be an immediate selling point for any household with pets and a lot of hard floors. You have no idea how dusty your floors get within even 24 hours.

I've used the V12 Detect Slim almost daily for well over three years now, and it's still kicking — as long as you clean it properly, this purchase should last you quite a while. When I'm not using it on the floor in those daily sessions, I'm switching it to handheld mode to clean fur off the couch with the mini motorized attachment or clean out my car with the crevice attachment. It's compact and lightweight enough to comfortably hold with one hand (I can't say the same about the massive Gen5 series Dysons). Though I've tested countless cordless vacuums, the V12 Detect Slim's user-friendliness just can't be beat.

The newest and improved version of Dyson's classic hair dryer, the Supersonic Nural, is still at its Black Friday price of $399.99. That's still pretty steep for a hair dryer even if it's the best of the best, but hear us out.

Up until the aftermath of Cyber Monday, our favorite Dyson hair tool deal was actually on that classic Supersonic — it was just $299.99 for the version with three attachments. But that's gone as of Dec. 2, and we're now looking at a $379.99 sale price on the classic Supersonic with five attachments. And at that point, why not just spend $20 more to get the Supersonic Nural that also comes with five attachments? The extra $20 would save your scalp from being fried with hot air (the Nural automatically turns down the temperature when it's near your scalp). The Nural also automatically pauses airflow when set down for a second.

Allergies or not, your body will thank you for running an air purifier all the time. I can confirm that the Dyson HushJet is as "hushed" as the title implies, making it the rare actually-quiet air purifier that you won't mind running 24/7. Within a day of bringing the HushJet home, it took the air quality in my living room from "very poor" to "good," as shown through a particle sensor breakdown in the app. The coolest part? After your initial purchase, you won't have to spend money on new filters every six months. The HushJet's high-tech filter should last for five years.

More air purifier dealsDon't fall for this one Dyson deal

For all of the Dyson deals I recommend, there's one Dyson deal you should avoid: The 360 Vis Nav robot vacuum on sale for $349.99. Though the drop from its MSRP of $999.99 seems killer on its face, the vacuum itself is going to kill your faith in robot vacuums (it would have for me if I didn't test a million others for a living). The 360 Vis Nav's strong suction power can't make up for the fact that it doesn't self-empty, doesn't mop, and doesn't have small obstacle avoidance technology. There are much better robot vacuums still on sale for under $500 after Cyber Monday, and Dyson is releasing a new robot vacuum in 2026, anyway.

Black Friday-Cyber Monday shoppers spent more online and in person this year, driving $44.2 billion in sales

Tue, 12/02/2025 - 20:48

Shoppers dropped a lot of cash during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Despite substantial economic concerns for U.S. consumers, shoppers in the country spent record amounts. Online spending hit a record-high $11.8 billion on Black Friday itself, NBC News reported, citing figures from Adobe Analytics. The same firm estimated shoppers spent $6.4 billion online on Thanksgiving Day, plus another $11.8 billion online over the weekend. U.S. shoppers spent some $14.25 billion online on Cyber Monday, according to Adobe, via Reuters. For those keeping score at home, that brings the whopping grand total to about $44.2 billion in online shopping from Black Friday through Cyber Monday.

SEE ALSO: Cyber Monday Apple deals that are still live: There's still time to shop the $99 AirPods 4 with ANC

We don't have as compelling data about in-person shopping, but the National Retail Federation (NRF) told Reuters that 129.5 million consumers showed up to shop in person, which represents a 3 percent uptick from last year. The NRF found that shoppers dropped an average of $337.86 this year, up from $315.56 in 2024.

So it seems folks were ready to shop this year. Perhaps now, more than ever, they were looking for a good deal.

We've seen sets sell out just hours after we've first written about them, and holiday shoppers are moving fast this year. With Cyber Monday technically now over, check out the best last-chance deals on Legos.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday always deliver great deals on toys, and discounted Legos are an absolutely crucial building block of Cyber Week toy deals. In 2025, we saw a super-strong wave of Black Friday Lego deals, many of which carried over into Cyber Monday. We're bummed about the handful of deals on super popular sets that have disappeared, but are simultaneously psyched about the handful of new Lego deals that are still live post-Cyber Monday.

Of all the Lego deals we've seen over the past few days, our favorites include coveted Lego Star Wars (including sets retiring soon), Disney Lego sets, Lego Botanicals, and more, almost all at record-low pricing. If one catches your eye, grab it while it's still available.

It's finally here: a built-in remote for your e-reader. Your Kobo e-reader that is.

In early October, Kobo, the maker of our favorite e-readers including the Clara Colour and Libra Colour, announced that it was launching a remote, compatible with all of its e-readers. The new remote's launch date was pushed back from Nov. 4 to Dec. 2, and now it's finally here.

The Kobo Remote pairs with Kobo e-readers via Bluetooth, allowing users to turn the page with the remote rather than on the e-reader. It has an ergonomic design so your head doesn't get stuck in an uncomfortable cramp during your reading marathon. The remote retails for $29.99 and comes in either black or white.

This accessory comes with the rising popularity of remote page turners on TikTok. Kobo even beat e-reader giant Amazon to the punch, as there's no native remote sold for Kindles. The most popular options are two piece remotes that require a piece that clips onto e-readers and taps the screen. The Kobo Remote is a single piece, leaving your screen totally unobstructed.

The Kobo Remote is available at just the right time. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Kobo Libra Colour, our favorite color e-reader, is still on sale. You can grab the color e-reader that comes with coveted page-turning buttons for just $199.99, saving you $30. Those $30 you're saving can go straight toward the remote, so you're basically getting it for free.

Anthropic launches Claude for Nonprofits for Giving Tuesday

AI developer Anthropic is honoring this Giving Tuesday with new trainings and features for its popular chatbot, Claude, that are specifically designed for the needs of nonprofits.

The Claude for Nonprofits package provides nonprofit organizations with discounted Claude access (up to 75 percent off); integrations with nonprofit tools like Blackbaud, Candid, and Benevity; as well as free use case guides and an AI Fluency for Nonprofits training course for AI beginners.

The company explains that its upgraded Claude Sonnet 4.5, and advanced coding model, is also trained for grant writing and program analysis. It's safety-forward Haiku 4.5, meanwhile, speeds up processing at reduced costs. Both are available to Claude for Nonprofits users. Claude can also connect to Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Asana, Slack, and Box.

AI adoption across the nonprofit sector has been scattered, due in part to continued skepticism about the safety, privacy, and reliability of generative AI —and of the very nature of the sector's work. Many organizations are hard pressed to devote resources and time to the kind of training and infrastructure needed to ethically integrate the technology amid threatened funding streams, while others see its use as antithetical to their mission. Still, recent data shows widespread interest, but preparedness is low and adoption is slow. Of the AI developers and tech funders that have tried, few have been able to fully fill those gaps.

Claude for Nonprofits is thus built to support a nonprofit's tech infrastructure needs. "Nonprofits tackle some of society’s most difficult problems, often with limited resources," wrote Anthropic. "From our partners, we know AI helps most when it fits into existing workflows, upholds the privacy their communities expect, and is affordable." The developer has also partnered with nonprofit consulting organizations to provide tailored support to organizations.

According to Anthropic, Claude is already used by organizations like the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the YMCA, and the Epilepsy Foundation — the IRC also recently announced its own, in-house chatbot designed specifically to provide emergency assistance and support to refugee populations in the U.S. Claude for Nonprofits will be piloted among a cohort of 60 organizations who receive grants from funders like the Constellation Fund, Robin Hood, and Tipping Point Community.
