Apples new 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro is up for preorder

Thu, 10/16/2025 - 15:19

This week, Apple unveiled a refreshed 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the all-new M5 chip. Just like the preceding M4 model, it starts at $1,599 with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. Most of its specs are M4 holdovers, actually, but we'll get to that in a minute.

The M5 MacBook Pro is now available for preorder at Amazon, Best Buy, and in the Apple Store ahead of its formal launch on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Everywhere you can preorder the 14-inch M5 Apple MacBook Pro: Amazon Apple MacBook Pro, 14-inch (M5) Starting at $1,599 Pre-Order Here Best Buy Apple MacBook Pro, 14-inch (M5) Starting at $1,599 Pre-Order Here The Apple Store Apple MacBook Pro, 14-inch (M5) Starting at $1,599 Pre-Order Here

The new MacBook Pro offers "3.5x the AI performance and up to 1.6x faster graphics than the previous generation" thanks to that M5 chip, Apple said in a press release. Its CPU is also faster, though the company didn't specify by how much.

The M5 MacBook Pro can be configured with up to 4TB of storage, up from a max of 1TB in the M4 model.

And that's pretty much it in the updates department. The M5 MacBook Pro is a carbon copy of its predecessor: It has the same 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display (with an optional nano-texture upgrade), 12MP Center Stage camera, six-speaker sound system, port setup, and 24-hour battery life rating. It comes in the same space black and silver colorways, too.

In the M5 model's defense, the MacBook Pro line hasn't seen a proper redesign since 2021, when Apple got rid of the Touch Bar, brought back MagSafe charging, and swapped its 13-inch model for a 14-incher. The next-generation M6 model will probably be a little more exciting — it's rumored to have an OLED display — but it's still a year away.

The M5 chip isn't available on the 16-inch MacBook Pro just yet. That bigger variant still comes with the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.

Now that we're almost to Halloween, we can hardly say it's still back-to-school season. Despite that, you might be noticing that some of your intended tech for the school year isn't pulling its weight. If you've been dealing with a slow laptop at work, school, or for projects at home, it's likely time for an upgrade. There's a nice deal in store at Amazon today.

As of Oct. 16, the 13-inch MacBook Air (512GB, Sky Blue) is $999 at Amazon. That slices a solid $200 off the normal price from of $1,199 from a 17% discount.

Sure, the Sky Blue colorway is a bit subtle, but it's still a great option, especially with the sale. On Mashable's list of the best MacBooks, the Air earns the top spot. In part that's thanks to the powerful and zippy M4 chip. Mashable mentions the 15-inch version of this machine is great, but the 13-inch model could be even better for students or those who travel often: it's both smaller and lighter, coming in at just 2.7 pounds. If you're not absolutely sold on the 13-inch size, take into account the MacBook Air's ability to support two external displays.

SEE ALSO: Apple unveils the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip and 24-hour battery life

Today's sale price of $999 applies to the 512GB version. Considering the 256GB version is on sale for $899, spending an extra $100 to double the storage is a no-brainer. Apple says this MacBook can get up to 18 hours of battery life before it'll need a recharge, making it even better for spending all day on campus or long travel days for work.

While it's down to under $1,000, snag the Sky Blue MacBook Air. Consider it a nice treat for hurdling over the transition into fall.

Why Dracula Will Never Die

Thu, 10/16/2025 - 14:26

Did you know that Dracula is the most portrayed character in popular culture? His pale, blood-thirsty mug has appeared in over 540 films, countless books, comics, stage plays and tv series? Inspiring countless other vampire stories and franchises. No matter how many times we kill him off, he keeps coming back from the dead, stronger and more popular than ever. We’re here to tell you why.

Despite Dracula reaching only moderate success in Stoker’s time, his themes of the societal fear of “The Foreign Other” (someone noticeably different than us) and female autonomy end up being a through-line across all the iterations to follow.

No matter how much our society has evolved over the last 130 years, so have our fears. It's how Dracula embodies these fears that I believe to be the most alluring aspects of the modern vampire, and what keeps him coming back over and over again in his various forms. For us humans, struggling with the daily existential crisis of our mortality, what’s more alluring than the option to cheat death and cash in on the promise of an eternal life of decadence and pleasure?

Chicken Shop Dates Amelia Dimoldenberg launches new YouTube series

Thu, 10/16/2025 - 12:00

Amelia Dimoldenberg is a YouTube force to be reckoned with.

The host is best known for her viral Chicken Shop Date series in which she interviews celebrities over chicken nuggets and fries, but now she's branching out into new territory that's long proven fertile ground for web series: a show set entirely in a car.

Called Passenger Princess and with the first episode featuring racing driver George Russell, the tagline is simple enough: "Amelia Dimoldenberg can't drive, so she got F1 divers to teach her."

The end result is eight minutes of Dimoldenberg's trademark dry humor coupled with some (very) slow driving around a race track.

As we've shared in previous hints stories, this is a version of the popular New York Times word game that seeks to test the knowledge of sports fans.

Like the original Connections, the game is all about finding the "common threads between words." And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier — so we've served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

If you just want to be told today's puzzle, you can jump to the end of this article for the latest Connections solution. But if you'd rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

SEE ALSO: Mahjong, Sudoku, free crossword, and more: Play games on Mashable What is Connections: Sports Edition?

The NYT's latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication's sports coverage. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake — players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

NYT Pips hints, answers for October 16, 2025

Thu, 10/16/2025 - 11:53

Happy Thursday and welcome to your guide to Pips, the latest game in the New York Times catalogue.

Released in August 2025, the Pips puts a unique spin on dominoes, creating a fun single-player experience that could become your next daily gaming habit.

Currently, if you're stuck, the game only offers to reveal the entire puzzle, forcing you to move onto the next difficulty level and start over. However, we have you covered! Below are piecemeal answers that will serve as hints so that you can find your way through each difficulty level.

How to play Pips

If you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity for how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

SEE ALSO: Wordle today: Answer, hints for October 11, 2025

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible – and common – for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

  • Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.

  • Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.

  • Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.

  • Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.

  • Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

NYT Strands hints, answers for October 16, 2025

Thu, 10/16/2025 - 11:52

Today's NYT Strands hints are easy if you know a lot of fun facts.

Strands, the New York Times' elevated word-search game, requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

What's the best Wordle starting word?

The best Wordle starting word is the one that speaks to you. But if you prefer to be strategic in your approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.

However, the New York Times then rolled out its own Wordle Archive, available only to NYT Games subscribers.

Sabrina Carpenter channels Sex and the City in SNL promo

Thu, 10/16/2025 - 10:57

Sabrina Carpenter is hosting SNL this week, and in the promo clip above she channels every bit of her inner Carrie Bradshaw.

"New York is one Big Apple, and I'm taking my bite...at Saturday Night Live," says Carpenter's narration, over footage of the pop artist striding into the building and turning every cast and crew interaction into a fast-paced pun.

Based on Carpenter's acting in this brief segment alone, we're going to go out on a limb and say she may well have a lucrative side career in comedy ahead of her.

Conan OBrien and Rose Byrne doing art therapy goes hilariously off the rails

Thu, 10/16/2025 - 10:10

Given that they have a therapist/patient dynamic in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, it's only fitting that Conan O'Brien and Rose Byrne take part in a little therapy of their own in the A24 promo above.

The therapy in question involves the pair painting a picture before discussing it with a therapist, and – given O'Brien is involved – it isn't long before things go completely off the rails.

The highlight? O'Brien arguing with both Byrne and the therapist herself.

A giant black hole is lost in space. Heres how its shocking astronomers.

Thu, 10/16/2025 - 10:00

When scientists discovered an enormous black hole thousands of light-years from where it ought to be in space, they knew they had a cosmic oddity on their hands.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope showed a rare black hole that looked like the kind astronomers would find at the center of a galaxy. Instead, it was about 2,600 light-years from the core, which was occupied by an even more massive black hole. The discovery of the renegade, first spotted by the Zwicky Transient Facility in California, was only possible because it happened to light up after snacking on an unlucky star.

But this bizarre black hole, the weight of 1 million or more suns, gets even weirder. In a new study led by UC Berkeley, researchers used radio telescopes to observe the strange object's behavior and found that the event, known as AT 2024tvd, prompted two clear bright flares of radio waves, changing faster than any other that scientists have seen.

"This is truly extraordinary," said Itai Sfaradi, first author of the research published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, in a statement. "Never before have we seen such bright radio emission from a black hole tearing apart a star, away from a galaxy’s center, and evolving this fast. It changes how we think about black holes and their behavior."

SEE ALSO: Scientists snap first photo of two black holes in an epic staredown

The first burst appeared about four months after the discovery and faded quickly. The second burst showed up about six months later, rising and falling even faster. The results show that powerful outflows of material were launched from the area of the black hole after the star's demise — not immediately after but months later, suggesting delayed and previously unknown processes at work.

Black holes are some of the most confounding things in space. They are regions where gravity is so intense that nothing can escape, not even light. About a half-century ago, astronomers weren't even sure they existed. Today, black holes aren't just confirmed, they're getting photographed. In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope achieved the first image of a black hole, located 53 million light-years away in the Messier 87 galaxy.

The Hubble Space Telescope detects a tidal disruption event from a black hole, seen in this image north of the bright smudgy galactic center where another even larger supermassive black hole resides. Credit: NASA / ESA / STScI / Yuhan Yao / Joseph DePasquale

Black holes don't have surfaces. Instead, they have a boundary called an "event horizon," or a point of no return. If anything wanders too close — like the poor previously mentioned star — it will fall in, never to escape the hole's gravity.

Astronomers aren't sure how this gargantuan black hole got to its seemingly random location. One idea is that it came from another galaxy that at some point merged into its present galaxy about 600 million light-years away from Earth. Another idea is that it was evicted from the center of the galaxy by two bigger black holes in what's known as a three-body interaction.

"Theorists have predicted that a population of massive black holes located away from the centers of galaxies must exist," said Ryan Chornock, a coauthor at UC Berkeley, in a statement earlier this year, "but now we can use (these events) to find them.”

The scientific term for when a star wanders too close to a black hole is a tidal disruption event. When a black hole interacts with surrounding gas and dust, it throws out fast streams of material or narrow jets. These features can be observed in radio waves. So shortly after the tidal disruption was detected in optical and ultraviolet light, Sfaradi and colleagues set out to watch it with the Very Large Array, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, and other radio dishes.

The black hole's unusual location and rapid radio changes give scientists a new way to study black holes and their effects far from galactic cores. Continued monitoring may reveal more about the speed, timing, and behavior of the material the black hole ejects. This event's unusual behavior could be connected to the black hole's off-center location, or it might represent a phenomenon scientists haven't seen before.

"This is one of the fascinating discoveries I’ve been part of," said Assaf Horesh, a coauthor based at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in a statement. "The fact that it was led by my former student, Itai, makes it even more meaningful."

The scientists used computer simulations to model how outflows or jets could produce the signals they saw. One explanation could be a single outflow launched about three months after the star was disrupted, with the double peaks in radio caused by the material hitting a complex environment around the black hole. Another possibility is that two separate outflows occurred, the first about three months after the event and the second about six months later.
