The NYT's latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication's sports coverage. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

NYT Strands hints, answers for December 5

Thu, 12/05/2024 - 11:10

If you're reading this, you're looking for a little help playing Strands, the New York Times' elevated word-search game.

Strands requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

By providing an opaque hint and not providing the word list, Strands creates a brain-teasing game that takes a little longer to play than its other games, like Wordle and Connections.

The iRobot Roomba Vac 2 just got its biggest-ever discount. Its cheaper than it was for Black Friday.

Thu, 12/05/2024 - 11:04

SAVE $170: As of Dec. 5, the iRobot Roomba Vac 2 is on sale for $229.99 at Amazon. That's a 43% saving on the list price.

Opens in a new window Credit: iRobot iRobot Roomba Vac 2 $229.99 at Amazon
$399.99 Save $170.00 Get Deal

Roomba is one of the most recognizable names in the robot vacuum game, and that's for good reason. Its top-of-the-range vacuums are the perfect addition to any home, boasting a range of incredible functions and dirt-cleaning features. So it's no surprise that robot vacuums were one of the most heavily discounted items in the recent Black Friday sales, including the fantastic iRobot Roomba Vac 2.

This model was discounted in Amazon's Black Friday sale, but it has now dropped further to $229.99, an additional $20 off. This is also the lowest this robot vacuum has ever been priced.

SEE ALSO: The PS5 Digital Edition is still at its Black Friday price

So, what's special about this model? Well, like most high-end robot vacuums, the Roomba Vac 2 comes with a self-emptying dock that holds up to 60 days of dirt and debris. This is one of our favorite features at Mashable, because you won't need to empty the vacuum with each use. The whole point of a robot vacuum is to limit your chores, and this does just that.

For thorough cleaning, the powerful three-stage cleaning system gets the job done with four suction levels. This is ideal for tough stains and dirt that won't disappear with just a light vacuum. It also has a Multi-Surface Bristle Brush and an Edge-Sweeping Brush, perfect for those hard-to-reach corners and awkward edges.

Speaking of awkward edges, the smart navigation in the vacuum will keep it from bumping into things (coffee tables, walls, your feet) and clean your floors in neat rows, a big selling point for fans of vacuum lines.

And let's not forget, you can schedule all this to start from your phone, just download the iRobot Home App and start a clean from wherever, whenever. Charging can provide up to 120 minutes of runtime, and if it runs out of battery mid-clean, it'll recharge and pick up the cleaning where it ended.

This deal is only available for a limited time, so head to Amazon now.

Webb telescope exposes secrets of a famous cosmic metropolis

Thu, 12/05/2024 - 11:00

Galaxies may not need to crash and smash into each other as much as previously thought to spawn new galaxies, according to two new scientific studies.

Astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope, the leading infrared observatory in space, to peer into the murk around the Spiderweb protocluster, a famous metropolis of galaxies in the universe, to study what it takes to form these complex cosmic neighborhoods. Webb is a partnership between NASA and its European and Canadian counterparts.

The protocluster is about 10 billion light-years away from Earth and exists during a period of the universe's history known as "cosmic noon." In this region during the time — just 3 billion years after the Big Bang — more than a hundred galaxies were under construction.

What scientists discovered surprised them: Mergers and collisions weren't that important for the process.

"Now we think that star formation can be explained by the accumulation of gas in various parts of the large-scale structures," said Helmut Dannerbauer, one of the researchers at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias in Spain, in a statement.

SEE ALSO: Webb telescope scientists forced to reckon with enormous galaxy outliers In this James Webb Space Telescope image of the Spiderweb protocluster, galaxies are circled in white. The bottom row of images shows close-ups of seven central galaxies. Credit: ESA / NASA / CSA / H. Dannerbauer

Scientists have frequently trained telescopes on the Spiderweb protocluster. That's because in our neck of the universe, closer galaxy clusters to the Milky Way tend to be old and slowing down. But the Spiderweb is a growing, busy hub of activity, revealing more clues about the steps and ingredients needed to form new galaxies.

The new research is published in the Astrophysical Journal. The scientists' observations that dust that can turn into new stars is mostly coming from a smooth hydrogen gas accumulation across the region. This finding suggests that gravitational interactions aren't that necessary to produce dust.

The James Webb Space Telescope's ability to detect light at infrared wavelengths allows scientists to study galaxies forming at a time period in the universe's history known as "cosmic noon." Credit: NASA GSFC / CIL / Adriana Manrique Gutierrez illustration

Webb was built to see the early universe, detecting invisible light at infrared wavelengths. Dust and gas in space obscures the view to extremely distant and inherently dim light sources, but infrared waves can pierce through the clouds. One Webb scientist likened the strength of the telescope to being able to sense the heat of a single bumblebee on the moon.

In addition to revealing new insights into galaxy formation, Webb's penetrating gaze detected two-dozen previously unseen galaxies, published in a companion paper in the Astrophysical Journal. The team is planning follow-up light spectrum studies with Webb to learn more about those galaxies' chemical compositions.

Whats new to streaming this week? (Dec. 06, 2024)

Thu, 12/05/2024 - 11:00

When it comes to streaming, viewers are spoiled for choice between Hulu, Netflix, Max, Disney+, Apple TV+, Prime Video, Shudder, Paramount+, Peacock, and more. And that's before you even look at the vast libraries of movies and television within each one!

Don't be overwhelmed or waste an hour scrolling through your services trying to determine what to watch! We've got your back whatever your mood. Mashable offers watch guides for all of the above, broken down by genre: comedy, thriller, horror, documentary, animation, and more.

But if you're seeking something brand spanking new (or new to streaming), we've got you covered there, too.

SEE ALSO: The best Netflix TV shows of 2024

Mashable's entertainment team has scoured the streaming services to highlight the most buzzed-about releases of this week and ranked them from worst to best — or least worth your time to most watchable. Need a little Christmas... right this very minute? Hankering for a crime tale that's kooky and creepy? Ready for a coming-of-age story that'll blow your mind and rock your concept of the Joker? Or maybe you just want a winsome tale from a galaxy far far away. Whichever's the case, we've got you covered.

Here's what's new on streaming, from worst to best.

7. Fly Me to the Moon

Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum star in a Space Race-set romance that harkens back to the Golden Age of Hollywood with its cheeky sensibility and chic 1960s fashion. Unfortunately, this woefully miscalculated movie is nowhere near as whimsical or funny as you'd reason it should be.

In 1969, NASA is desperate to make its mission to the moon work, so they've got their top NASA launch director (Tatum) on it. But they need a sure thing and an enthusiastic American public, so they also hire an advertising maven (Johansson) to sell the country on the idea — and plot an Earth-bound moon landing shoot in case they need to fake it. While Fly Me To the Moon has its moments — supporting player Anna Garcia is a hilarious standout — it ultimately falls short of its entertainment aims. In Mashable's review, I explained, "[Director Greg] Berlanti has a wide sandbox to play in but no idea what to do with all these toys. In the end, Fly Me to the Moon is not just a misfire but a cataclysmic miscalculation, turning out to be far more tedious than enchanting." — K.P.

Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Jim Rash, Anna Garcia, Donald Elise Watkins, Noah Robbins, Colin Woodell, Christian Zuber, Nick Dillenburg, Ray Romano, and Woody Harrelson

How to watch: Fly Me to the Moon comes to Apple TV+ on Dec. 6.

6. Speak No Evil

'Round these parts, we were big fans of 2022's Speak No Evil, a Danish thriller that had us riveting from its deceptively sunny opening act to its totally twisted finale. So we were a tad skeptical when an American remake was announced so swiftly.

Director James Watkins (The Woman in Black) adapted Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup's original script, translating the action from the Netherlands to rural England, and swapping doe-eyed Danes for American ex-pats. The plot was mostly the same: While vacationing abroad, a family of three befriends a married couple and their quiet son. So they decide to follow their new friends to their remote home and keep the party going. But soon, they discover something wicked lurks in the hearts of their hosts. However, Watkins' version adds new elements and a totally different ending. Admittedly, we weren't fans.

In my review for Mashable, I jeered, "Watkins has gussied up a convoluted action sequence to coddle American exceptionalism. Ironically, he does this by cutting the original's most horrific scenes and in their place offering underwhelming substitutions, like swapping a rare porterhouse steak for a bit of soggy cardboard. Of course, if you've never savored the blood and bite of a steak, this processed remake will probably serve just fine." — K.P.

Starring: James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough, and Scoot McNairy

How to watch: Speak No Evil begins streaming on Peacock Dec. 6.

5. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story

Documentarians Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui teamed up with the family and friends of Christopher Reeve to unfurl a touching look at his life story.

The film cleverly parallels his rise to fame as Super-Man with his challenging journey after a near-fatal horse-riding accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. Reeve's loved ones share how he rose from this tragedy to become an activist and advocate for people with disabilities, touching on the controversies therein. Archival footage and home movies show the late movie star in interviews, at award ceremonies, at home, and in his advocacy work. Altogether, this paints an emotional and inspiring portrait of a man many saw as super and a hero. — K.P.

Starring: Christopher Reeve, Dana Reeve, Alexandra Reeve Givens, Matthew Reeve, and Will Reeve

How to watch: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is now streaming on Max.

4. That Christmas

Richard Curtis, the visionary behind the holiday classic Love Actually, has a new yuletide treat — and this one doesn't have that NSFW stand-in plotline to worry about!

Based on his children's book series, That Christmas is an animated adventure that welcomes audiences into the charming small town of Wellington-on-Sea. There, a flurry of stories are stirring: A young boy pursues his crush on a shy classmate. A band of parents get stranded overnight, leaving their kids to create a holiday celebration for themselves. And a saucy Santa (voiced by Succession's Brian Cox) is sure to get in on the fun.

Filled with beloved British stars, holiday charm, and humor, That Christmas is a terrific choice for the whole family. —K.P.

Starring: Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, Lolly Adefope, Alex Macqueen, Katherine Parkinson, Sindhu Vee, India Brown, Zazie Hayhurst, Sienna Sayer, Jack Wisniewski, Rosie Cavaliero, Paul Kaye, Guz Khan, Andy Nyman, Kuhu Agarwal, Bronte Smith, Freddie Spry, Ava Talbot, Bill Nighy, and Rhys Darby

How to watch: That Christmas hits Netflix Dec. 4.

3. The People's Joker

Forget what you think you know about the Joker. Far from DC-approved spinoffs or box office-bombing sequels, The People's Joker employs elements from the classic Batman villain (and a slew of his criminal cohorts) to spin a boldly original trans coming-of-age story.

Co-written, directed, and starring Vera Drew, The People's Joker follows a trans girl from her humble, rural beginnings to a scuzzy, neon-drenched Gotham City, where comedy is outlawed to all but an SNL-like league. Joker the Harlequin (Drew) fights for the right to crack wise. Pulling together DC iconography, autobiographical elements, and a proudly chaotic and crowd-sourced aesthetic, Drew makes a movie that is romantic, funny, tender, bizarre, and endlessly surprising.

SEE ALSO: 'The People's Joker's Vera Drew on WB pressure and her queer superhero parody

The People's Joker gained buzz on the festival circuit, spooked a certain studio, awed critics, and ultimately found its following thanks to film and fitting campaign that encouraged audiences to embrace their inner weirdos. And now it's easier than ever to see what all the buzz was about. Don't miss it. — K.P.

Starring: Vera Drew, Scott Aukerman, Tim Heidecker, Maria Bamford, David Liebe Hart, Robert Wuhl, and Bob Odenkirk

How to watch: The People's Joker debuts on MUBI Dec. 6.

2. The Sticky

From 2011 to 2012, thieves stole millions of dollars worth of maple syrup from Quebec's syrup reserves. Now, the unbelievable true story of the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist gets the TV treatment thanks to The Sticky. The new Prime Video series stars Margo Martindale, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Guillaume Cyr as three down-on-their-luck outsiders about to embark on the sweetest robbery of the century. (Jamie Lee Curtis pops in later as a Boston gangster out for blood.)

While the heist itself can feel a tad underwhelming after six episodes of build-up (some of it moving syrupy slow), The Sticky's true draw is the chemistry between the conspiring central crew. As I wrote in my Mashable review, "Martindale, Cyr, and Diamantopoulos have created a trio of lovable, flawed criminals who are fully-fledged right off the bat, and watching their dynamic evolve over the course of the season is a sweet treat all by itself." — Belen Edwards, Entertainment Reporter

How to watch: All episodes of The Sticky premiere on Prime Video on Dec. 6

1. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

Do you want some sweet, sweet childlike joy with your Star Wars? Then check out the franchise's latest TV offering, Skeleton Crew. This rollicking adventure series centers on four young kids who find themselves far, far away from their home planet. On top of trying to get home, they've also got space pirates to worry about — not to mention the shifty Force-user Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law) who's tagging along with them, and who may not be all that he seems. It's basically The Goonies in space, a combination that yields delightful returns.

Among these returns? Four adorable young heroes (played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Robert Timothy Smith, and Kyriana Kratter), some spectacular animatronic aliens, and a refreshing lack of fan service-y connections to other Star Wars shows and movies. (At least, not in the three episodes sent to critics for screening.) In my review for Mashable, I praised Skeleton Crew as being "charming as can be, with its classic adventure story feel setting it squarely apart from other Star Wars TV offerings." — B.E.

Starring: Jude Law, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon, and Nick Frost

How to watch: Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episodes 1 and 2 are now streaming on Disney+, with new episodes airing weekly.

Honorable mention: A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter

At the time of publishing, none on our team have had the good fortune to watch more than the preview of Sabrina Carpenter's intriguing holiday special. The guest list alone is reason enough to add it to your watch list. (Hey, the promise of a duet between Carpenter and the glorious queer icon Chappell Roan is reason enough!) But having not seen what goodies this pop girlie has in store, we couldn't properly rank this one.

Once you've seen it, tells us where A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter would make it on your list: Naughty? Nice? Both!? — K.P.

Starring: Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Tyla, Shania Twain, Kali Uchis, Nico Hiraga, Quinta Brunson, Cara Delevingne, Kyle Mooney, Megan Stalter, Sean Astin, Owen Thiele, and Jillian Bell

How to watch: A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter premieres Dec. 6 at 9 p.m. ET on Netflix.

At Amazon, in fact, many products are still lingering at their Black Friday prices. And that includes the AirPods 4, the latest in the Apple AirPod range. Whether you want to treat yourself or you're prepping for Christmas presents, these have remained at a discounted price throughout Black Friday. This particular deal is for the AirPods without active noise cancellation or AppleCare+, but there are discounts across all variations. For example, the model with active noise cancellation is now $164.99, down from $179.

Powered by Apple's incredible H2 chip, these AirPods create an incredibly immersive listening experience. Personalized Spatial Audio and dynamic head tracking make it feel like the sound is moving around you, creating a theater-like listening experience. And the microphone audio is incredible too. It uses advanced computational audio to reduce background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice.

Bitcoin finally hits a massive price milestone

Thu, 12/05/2024 - 10:14

People have been saying it was imminent since 2021, but three years later it's finally happened: Bitcoin has passed the $100,000 mark.

Bitcoin (specifically 1 BTC) became worth $100,000 late on Wednesday night EST, pumping to just shy of $104,000 in the hours after, per CoinGecko.

SEE ALSO: HBO bitcoin documentary claims it discovered the cryptocurrency's inventor. The guy disagrees.

The biggest cryptocurrency in the world has been jumping sharply in price since the U.S. election result in early November, breaking new all-time highs after Donald Trump was re-elected president. A month ago that all-time high was just over $75,000 — now, in the space of just a few weeks, it's $25,000 higher.

So the question is, where does Bitcoin go from here? The short, and really the only, answer, is that it's impossible to say. Back in the cryptocurrency bull market of 2021, there were all sorts of predictions that Bitcoin hitting $100k could be imminent. What happened instead was a bear market that resulted in Bitcoin dumping back down below $17,000 before starting a long and slow recovery in 2023.

Elon Musk fails bid to restore $55.8 billion Tesla pay package

Thu, 12/05/2024 - 09:15

Elon Musk's $55.8 billion Tesla compensation package just got thrown out yet again. A U.S. judge denied the billionaire's petition to reinstate his outsized pay on Monday, rejecting his attempt to overturn the previous judgement via a Tesla shareholder vote.

Monday's finding comes after a Delaware court initially threw out Musk's multibillion dollar Tesla compensation package in January. In that ruling, Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick found that Tesla's board of directors had breached their duty to shareholders by mindlessly following Musk's proposal regarding his pay as CEO, offering no pushback nor attempting any negotiation. The court further determined that the $55.8 billion package was disproportionate to the benefit Tesla received, the deal making no demands regarding the amount of time Musk was to spend actually working at the company.

SEE ALSO: Tesla shareholders vote to give Elon Musk a $56 billion pay package after a court shot it down

Musk was predictably unhappy with this ruling. In June, the exact same $55.8 billion compensation package was put to shareholders for reapproval during Tesla's annual meeting. Monday's judgement noted that Tesla told shareholders that the company could save $25 billion in accounting fees by ratifying the deal.

Once shareholders voted to reapprove Musk's pay package, he and Tesla took the result back to court to ask that the earlier judgement be reversed. In their petition, they argued that a company's shareholders should be able to reverse a court's decision even where there has been a breach of duty, stating that "stockholders hold the power to adopt any corporate acts they deem in their own best interests."

Unfortunately for Musk, McCormick would have none of it. In her ruling this week, the judge was notably unimpressed by Tesla literally creating new evidence in an attempt to flip the court's judgement, noting that they did not cite a single case where such shenanigans have been allowed.

"Were the court to condone the practice of allowing defeated parties to create new facts for the purpose of revising judgments, lawsuits would become interminable," McCormick wrote.

The court drew a distinction between newly discovered evidence, which would have already existed at the time of the previous trial, and newly created evidence such as Tesla's June stockholder vote. While newly discovered evidence may be cause for a case to be reopened, newly created evidence is not.

McCormick further noted that Tesla made numerous false or misleading statements to its shareholders in advance of the June ratification vote, such as claiming that any breaches the court found could be remedied by reapproving Musk's compensation.

"[E]ven if the Stockholder Vote could have a ratifying effect on the Grant, it could not here due to multiple, material misstatements in the Proxy Statement concerning the effect of the vote," wrote McCormick.

Basically, shareholders can't just get together and decide that what their board did was actually legal after a U.S. court has already determined that it wasn't.

Tweet may have been deleted

Musk quickly took to social media to decry the judgement, stating that "Shareholders should control company votes, not judges." Tesla has also announced its intention to appeal.

"A Delaware judge just overruled a supermajority of shareholders who own Tesla and who voted twice to pay @elonmusk what he’s worth," wrote the official Tesla X account. "The court’s decision is wrong, and we’re going to appeal. This ruling, if not overturned, means that judges and plaintiffs’ lawyers run Delaware companies rather than their rightful owners — the shareholders."

Addressing such assertions in Monday's judgement, the court found that a company's board members are more analogous to trustees rather than agents. While agents act on behalf of another party (in this case Tesla's shareholders), trustees have a legal obligation to act in the best interests of said party.

The best sex and dating apps for hooking up

Thu, 12/05/2024 - 06:00

This content originally appeared on Mashable for a US audience and has been adapted for the UK audience.

In the age of on-demand everything, hookup apps are the go-to for casual dating. After all, if we can stream movies (thank you, Netflix) and order a takeaway with just a few taps, why can't we find a potential partner the same way?

Sometimes all you want is a little fun, and there's an app for that.

How do you find a hookup?

It's still possible to find a connection in the real world. Meeting in bars, clubs, parks, and other real-life locations still happens on a regular basis. You're simply shortening your odds by subscribing to a dating site.

Dating sites and sex apps allow you to get your information out there to a massive network of like-minded individuals. Plus, you can save a lot of time, energy, and cash by testing out a potential relationship on an app before meeting up. We know that some dating apps can be expensive, but just think about all those wasted coffees you could avoid by chatting through an app first.

SEE ALSO: The best sexting apps for sending naughty messages

Using dating apps and sites is also a whole lot less intimidating than meeting someone face to face. If you find the idea of meeting people slightly terrifying, these apps can help you dip your toe into the world of dating from the comfort of your own home.

Should you use free dating apps?

The good news is that there are a lot of free dating sites and apps out there, and the likes of Tinder and Hinge are popular options with massive networks of users. Plus, most of the biggest and best dating sites have free versions with limitations on certain features. So yes, you can easily enter the online dating game without spending anything. However, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for with dating apps. And sometimes free apps just don't cut it.

For the best experience with the greatest possibility of finding exactly what you're looking for, you are going to have to cough up some cash. We're sorry to break it to you, but the best dating sites don't come cheap. It all comes down to access to advanced and premium features. You can still find a hookup with a free app, but if you're looking for compatibility tests, chat rooms, videos, and a greater level of control, we recommend upgrading.

What makes an app good for hooking up?

There's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to hookup apps. What works for your friends might not work for you. Your best bet is to download a handful of options and see which one clicks with your vibe.

Skip the apps that are all about romance and happily ever afters (we're looking at you, eharmony). Instead, keep an eye out for apps that get straight to the point. The best hookup apps make chatting quick and easy (messaging, video calls, all that good stuff), and even the free ones should have features like profile verification to help keep you safe.

If you really want to pay for a premium membership, that's up to you. But we recommend starting with the free versions of cult faves like Tinder, Grindr, and Hinge. These popular dating apps give you just enough functionality to connect with potential partners for casual encounters — all without spending anything.

What is the best sex and dating app for hooking up?

The good news is that there are absolutely loads of dating sites and sex apps out there for every type of dater and dating situation. The problem with this wealth of options is that deciding on the right site for you can be difficult. This is where we can help.

Whether you're looking to have a one-night stand, exchange nudes with strangers, or have some phone sex before you doze off, we've rounded up the most reliable hookup apps for every type of single. You can download them via Google Play or the App Store and start swiping in minutes.

These are the best hookup sites and apps in 2024.

Microsoft wants you to upgrade to Windows 11 or buy a new computer

Thu, 12/05/2024 - 00:26

If you're still running Windows 10 on your PC, you're probably quite used to Microsoft's reminders that you can upgrade to Windows 11 for free by now. For a multitude of reasons, Windows 10 remains the most popular operating system even though Windows 11 was released in 2021.

SEE ALSO: Microsoft displays full-screen Copilot+ PC ads to Windows 10 users

However, time is ticking for those holding on to Windows 10. A few months ago, Microsoft announced that free security and performance updates for Windows 10 will be coming to an end in October 2025. While you'll still be able to use Windows 10, you'll have to pay for updates and support.

For most PC users, this will likely be the biggest reason to finally give in and upgrade to Windows 11.

But, wait! Adopting Windows 11 might not be the end of upgrading for you. In fact, Microsoft may want you to even purchase a whole new computer.

Microsoft's Windows 11 watermark warning

Multiple outlets have recently noticed that upgrading to Windows 11 on older, unsupported hardware has resulted in a watermark displaying on the user's desktop notifying them of the situation.

According to Microsoft's support page, "when Windows 11 is installed on a device that doesn't meet the minimum system requirements, a watermark is added to the Windows 11 desktop."

Microsoft has also added a disclaimer to its support page that reads:

This PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements for running Windows 11 - these requirements help ensure a more reliable and higher quality experience. Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won't be entitled to receive updates. Damages to your PC due to lack of compatibility aren't covered under the manufacturer warranty. By selecting Accept, you are acknowledging that you read and understand this statement.

Microsoft also provides users with a guide on reverting back to Windows 10 if your PC doesn't meet those minimum requirements. However, with the recently announced sunsetting of free support for Windows 10, this doesn't seem like such a good long-term option anymore.

So, in a little less than a year from now, PC owners with older computers will be left with a choice: Buy a new computer and upgrade to Windows 11 or keep your old computer and stick with an unsupported operating system – unless of course you decide to pay for Windows 10 support. Basically, there's no free upgrade to Windows 11 for older PC users. You'll likely have to pay up one way or another.

Microsoft has yet to announce any pricing model for those who'd like to hold on to Windows 10.

Black D.C. neighborhoods denied same-day deliveries by Amazon, attorney general claims

Wed, 12/04/2024 - 21:34

A new lawsuit filed against delivery and tech giant Amazon accuses the company of intentionally slowing down Prime deliveries to select neighborhoods in Washington D.C.— areas that happen to be home to predominantly Black households.

Submitted by D.C. attorney general Brian Schwalb on Dec. 4, the lawsuit claims Amazon imposed a secret "delivery exclusion" to zip codes in southeast and northeast D.C. in mid-2022. The alleged policy, which saw Amazon removing its own vehicles from delivery routes in the region, effectively strips Prime-subscribed residents in those areas of the advertised one-day, two-day, or same-day shipment options, constituting a violation of consumer protection laws.

SEE ALSO: New consumer protection rules would block data brokers from selling Americans' sensitive info

Notably, these areas (specifically zip codes 20019 and 20020 in Ward 7 and Ward 8) are highly-populous and predominantly Black. The areas are "historically underserved," according to Schwalb. "While Amazon has every right to make operational changes, it cannot covertly decide that a dollar in one zip code is worth less than a dollar in another," wrote the attorney general. "Amazon is charging tens of thousands of hard-working Ward 7 and 8 residents for an expedited delivery service it promises but does not provide."

This is not the first accusation levied against Amazon for discriminatory delivery practices. A 2016 investigation by Bloomberg found that much of Amazon's free same-day delivery service area excluded predominantly Black ZIP codes. Amazon—initially blaming disparities in service on lack of proximity to warehouses—later announced it would expand same-day delivery to affected areas in Boston, New York City, and Chicago as a result of the findings.

An Amazon spokesperson told NBC that the lawsuit's claims of "discriminatory or deceptive" business practices are "categorically false." Instead, according to Amazon representative Kelly Nantel, the policy was enacted to "protect" its employees from area residents. "In the zip codes in question, there have been specific and targeted acts against drivers delivering Amazon packages," she said in a statement. "We made the deliberate choice to adjust our operations, including delivery routes and times, for the sole reason of protecting the safety of drivers."
