Wicked: For Good review: Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande return for a sensational conclusion

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 18:00

Pour one out for the doubters. When Universal announced director Jon M. Chu would be breaking the hit Broadway musical Wicked into two films, there was a lot of grumbling that this was a cash-grab decision that would not be justified in the storytelling.

Sure, 2024's Wicked had a terrific climax, ending with Elphaba's escape from Emerald City and the show's greatest song, "Defying Gravity." But how do you make Act 2, a wobblier construct with new characters and jarring reveals, work as its own movie? Chu shows us how with Wicked: For Good.

SEE ALSO: 'Wicked: For Good' trailer: Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande return to conclude Elphaba and Glinda's story

The screenplay, written by the Broadway show's book writer Winnie Holzman and screenwriter Dana Fox, smartly builds out elements glossed over in the bustling second act of the theatrical production. The film features dynamic action sequences, heavy-handed flashbacks, and two new songs, one for Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo and another for Academy Award nominee Ariana Grande-Butera (as she's credited). Now, some of this certainly plays as filler. But much of it bolsters Chu's cinematic vision of this reimagined Oz.

Once again the double act of Erivo and Grande sets a dizzyingly high bar, one that will thrill movie audiences and inspire generations of theater kids to defy gravity of their own.

Wicked: For Good paints a dystopia — but with brighter colors. Credit: Universal Pictures

Critics of Chu's first Wicked (me included) jeered the toned-down colors of Emerald City and the plethora of poppies. For much of Wicked: For Good, he's course corrected — or color corrected — to better revel in the vibrant hues of Nathan Crowley's meticulous production design and Paul Tazewell's glistening costumes of Oz. Elphaba's black robes strike a sharper contrast in visuals and tone against the emerald of the Wizard's realm and the princessy pinks of Glinda's garb. As the film gets emotionally darker for its heroines, Chu gives over to the gray again, seemingly covering the film in a dull veil that frustratingly obscures the focus and faces of his stars. However, there are still many opportunities for them to stand out.

Wicked: For Good picks up with the not-so-wonderful Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) using enslaved, near-voiceless animals as beasts of burden to construct the Yellow Brick Road, while sneering human guards whip the critters without mercy. Naturally, Elphaba (Erivo) soars in, pulling off a superhero landing to free her fellow Ozians and scare off the violent guards, unavoidably feeding into the Wizard's smear campaign that has her as Oz's public enemy #1.

Featured Video For You How director Jon M. Chu made 'Wicked'

Back in the glittering glory of Emerald City, Glinda (Grande-Butera) is a celebrated public figure being gifted her famous mechanized bubble, courtesy of a scowling Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). Such whimsical transport will help complete the masquerade that Glinda the Good (as she's been branded) possesses incredible magic. And to complete the picture, the Wizard and Morrible have plotted a marriage between their poster girl and their debonair Captain of the Guard Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey).

While Elphaba fights single-handedly for the freedom of animals and the overturning of the Wizard's regime of lies, she suffers the heartache of having lost her best friend, her beau, and her connection to her sister, Nessa (Marissa Bode). In For Good, she reconnects with each, making sparks and spells fly, resulting in the turns very familiar to fans of The Wizard of Oz.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-Butera are spectacular in Wicked: For Good.  Credit: Universal Pictures

With the first film, Erivo was unconvincing as an insecure ingénue. Her strong physicality and booming vocals are better suited to Wicked's second half, where Elphaba has metaphorically found her voice. Here, Erivo channels a radiant intensity into every step, every lyric, and every glare.

Grande-Butera is her pitch-perfect foil. Where Elphaba's attitude reflects the darkness overtaking Oz, Glinda's bubbliness mirrors the citizens' blithe and oblivious attitude toward their Wizard dictator. In terms of balancing comedy and drama, Erivo and Grande-Butera work as a terrific team. Erivo broods and belts, while Grande-Butera bubbles and…also belts.

Even within the grimmer turns this sequel takes, Grande-Butera finds in-character moments for lightness and comedy. The "tap to bubble" bit teased in trailers is undeniable fun. But even as Glinda lays down heavy truths, Grande-Butera finds notes of "dumb blonde" bounciness that enrich without distracting.

Credit: Universal Pictures

When these two friends and foes face off in a physical fight, there's an emotional charge but a comic tone, as they fight not like powerful witches, but like frenemies ready to rip each other's hair out. (Think when Colin Firth and Hugh Grant fight in Bridget Jones's Diary.)

It almost goes without saying that both Erivo and Grande-Butera crush the vocals, not only for the well-known Wicked numbers, but also for the Elphaba song "No Place Like Home" and Glinda's "The Girl in the Bubble." However, neither song is as strong as those from the Broadway soundtrack.

Wicked: For Good goes surprisingly hard into the darkest turns.  Credit: Universal Pictures

Fans of Gregory Maguire's novel or the long-running Broadway musical that was born from it won't be surprised by the revealed origins of Dorothy and her Yellow Brick Road-trekking friends. However, they might still marvel at the costume and makeup transformations that bring these iconic figures to life anew. (Save for the Cowardly Lion, voiced by a theatrically trembling Colman Domingo, who is a fluffy CGI gesture.)

Ethan Slater brings a sharp viciousness to cursed Munchkin Boq, while his Nessa finds her inner wicked witch. As for Bailey, he is every inch the dashing hero when the script calls for it. But it's a love scene with Erivo that will have fans swooning — and likely launch untold crushes. (That Chu has this strapping man baring his chest hair and rocking some rolled-up shirt sleeves suggests the director understands female desire better than scads of his peers.) Even after a fateful transformation, Fiyero is a charmer. Simply put, Bailey is living up to his recently earned Sexiest Man Alive title — even when his vocal range seems strained by the demands of a duet opposite Erivo.

Elsewhere, Yeoh is satisfyingly snarling as the vicious Morrible. Goldblum is beguiling as the Wizard, but admittedly one-note, choosing to play the "corn-fed" villain as dedicatedly decorous even in the face of his darkest secrets. Fans of the comedic treasure that was the team-up of Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James will be disappointed, as their Pfannee and Shenshen appear in only one brief sequence. (They do get laughs though!) Overall, the ensemble is good as gold.

Where Wicked: For Good fumbles is in its insistence to look back. The new song numbers give the audience a deeper insight into the internal struggles of Elphaba and Glinda. The flashbacks, however, are indulgences. One features a small army of adorably dressed children in an insufferably simplistic explanation of why Glinda would lie to please people — as if that wasn't clear by this point in the story. The other flashback is more useful because the show has been split into two parts, so it's helpful in connecting a potentially lost thread. But this sequence also features a CGI de-aging that is distractingly poor. These moments highlight how Chu is struggling to pace the final chapter of his Wicked adaptation. But none ruin the fun, just the flow.

In the end, Wicked: For Good is sure to enthrall fans of the Broadway show, the first movie, and just about anyone who loves a splashy movie musical. Despite its faults, it's still good.

Wicked: For Good opens in theaters on Nov. 21.

Meta creates tool to prevent rampant Reels content theft

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 17:44

Meta is continuing its crackdown on copycat content.

The company is introducing a new tool for Facebook Reels creators that protects creators' content from being reposted from other accounts without permission.

On Monday, Meta announced a tool called content protection, which helps users "safeguard your reels and maintain control over your creative work." It's located in the Professional dashboard in the Facebook app, and currently the only users who are eligible for the tool are creators in the Facebook Content Monetization program "who meet enhanced integrity and originality standards." Users can check to see if they're eligible in their Feed, Professional dashboard, and profile.

"Your original work is your voice, and you should have the tools to protect it," Meta said in a press release about the change. "That's why we built content protection — a powerful yet simple new tool in your Professional dashboard in the Facebook app that helps you safeguard your reels and maintain control over your creative work. It’s part of our ongoing focus this year to help authentic creators break through on Facebook."

Once users enroll in content protection, they allow their reels to be scanned by the same matching technology as Meta's Rights Manager for matches. If the tool detects matches — be that full or partial — Facebook will notify the creator, who can review the content and decide to take action or not.

If the user decides to take action, they can choose to either track, block, or release. Tracking is the default setting and keeps the matching reel visible, but the user can stay informed about its performance.

"You can always revisit and take a different action at any time," Meta said about the tracking option. "You can also add attribution links to select eligible tracked matches on Facebook, which puts an 'original by' label on the reel that links back to your Page or Profile."

Users can also block, which makes the matching reel not visible without taking disciplinary action against the other account, or users can release their claim. They can also grant permission to certain accounts to use their content, which adds them to an "allow list" and makes it so that their matching content won't be flagged.

This is all part of an ongoing attempt from Meta to stop copycat creators. In July, the company said it took down 10 million profiles impersonating other content creators and "took action on" 500,000 accounts engaged in spammy behavior.

Cloudflare down: What we know about the outage so far

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 17:35

UPDATE Tuesday, Nov. 18, 11:33 a.m. ET: Cloudflare confirmed it had fully resolved the issue causing outages on Tuesday. This morning's Clouflare outage caused widespread errors across popular services, apps, and websites.

The company wrote in an emailed statement to Mashable that the outages stemmed from a crash in a software system that handles traffic, while adding that there was no evidence it was caused by malicious activity.

Read the statement:

"Many of Cloudflare's services experienced a significant outage today beginning around 11:20 UTC. It was fully resolved at 14:30 UTC. The root cause of the outage was a configuration file that is automatically generated to manage threat traffic. The file grew beyond an expected size of entries and triggered a crash in the software system that handles traffic for a number of Cloudflare's services.

To be clear, there is no evidence that this was the result of an attack or caused by malicious activity. We expect that some Cloudflare services will be briefly degraded as traffic naturally spikes post incident but we expect all services to return to normal in the next few hours. A detailed explanation will be posted soon on blog.cloudflare.com. Given the importance of Cloudflare's services, any outage is unacceptable. We apologize to our customers and the Internet in general for letting you down today. We will learn from today's incident and improve."

UPDATE Tuesday, Nov. 18, 10:28 a.m. ET: It appeared Cloudflare's issues were nearing a full resolution on Tuesday.

"A fix has been implemented and we believe the incident is now resolved," read a recent status update from the company. "We are continuing to monitor for errors to ensure all services are back to normal."

User-reported issues on Downdetector did appear to be quickly falling off. (Disclosure: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, the same parent company as Mashable.)

The company noted in a more recent update that some Cloudflare users may still be experiencing login issues, but that it is working on a fix.

UPDATE Tuesday, Nov. 18, 9:18 a.m. ET: Cloudflare confirmed it was experiencing serious issues on Tuesday morning, noting in an emailed statement to Mashable that the root cause appeared to be "a spike in unusual traffic."

Read the statement from Cloudflare:

We saw a spike in unusual traffic to one of Cloudflare's services beginning at 11:20 UTC. That caused some traffic passing through Cloudflare's network to experience errors. We do not yet know the cause of the spike in unusual traffic. We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is served without errors. After that, we will turn our attention to investigating the cause of the unusual spike in traffic. We will post updates to cloudflarestatus.com and more in-depth analysis when it is ready to blog.cloudflare.com.

The latest status update from Cloudflare read that it was "working on restoring service for application services customers."

The internet appears to be breaking again.

On Tuesday morning, at 11:48 UTC, Cloudflare confirmed its global network is experiencing issues impacting "multiple customers."

SEE ALSO: Cloudflare launches way to charge AI bots for crawling sites

Here's the full statement published on the site's status page.

Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues

Investigating - Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers. Further detail will be provided as more information becomes available.

Nov 18, 2025 - 11:48 UTC

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Cloudflare is a service that "powers Internet requests for millions of websites and serves 78 million HTTP requests per second on average," according to its site. In short, when Cloudflare has problems, the internet has problems. Users on X are already reporting issues, and Down Detector — the site that's normally a go-to for checking what's broken and what's not — appears to be having issues itself. (Disclosure: Ziff Davis owns both Mashable and Down Detector.)

Credit: Downdetector

It's worth noting this isn't the first time Cloudflare has experienced major issues. Large portions of the internet went down back in June due to Cloudflare disruption, causing problems for users of Twitch, Etsy, Discord, and Google.

Which parts of the internet are affected?

Here's a working list of all the sites and services affected by the Cloudflare outage:

'Please unlock Cloudflare challenges' error

Many sites impacted by the Cloudflare outage, including OpenAI.com, are displaying an error message that reads, "Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed."

This is a developing story and will be updated as new details emerge.

Cloudflare outage cause revealed: This is what happened.

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 17:31

UPDATE Tuesday, Nov. 18, 11:27 a.m. ET: Cloudflare confirmed it experienced a "significant outage" on Tuesday that stemmed from a crash in a software system that handles traffic for a number of its services.

The company wrote in an emailed statement to Mashable that the issue had been fully resolved and added that it did not appear to be an attack or caused by malicious activity.

The statement from Cloudflare read:

Issues with Cloudflare — one of the internet's major infrastructure providers — led to massive outages Tuesday morning as East Coast folks logged on to work. We're now starting to get answers as to why that happened.

Cloudflare emailed a statement to Mashable, suggesting that unusual, heavy traffic to its services was to blame. The company has not yet stated whether the unusual traffic appears to be of a nefarious nature.

SEE ALSO: Cloudflare outage list: X, OpenAI, Canva, Spotify, more impacted

Read the statement from Cloudflare:

"We saw a spike in unusual traffic to one of Cloudflare's services beginning at 11:20 UTC. That caused some traffic passing through Cloudflare's network to experience errors. We do not yet know the cause of the spike in unusual traffic. We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is served without errors. After that, we will turn our attention to investigating the cause of the unusual spike in traffic. We will post updates to cloudflarestatus.com and more in-depth analysis when it is ready to blog.cloudflare.com."

That spike in unusual traffic, it seems, sparked the massive issues on Tuesday. The list of services experiencing outages was vast, but appeared to include heavy hitters like OpenAI, X, Grindr, and many more. Pretty much anyone with an internet connection would be affected by a Cloudflare outage. User-reported issues on Downdetector continued to spike as we neared 10 a.m. ET, indicating the problems persisted. (Disclosure: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, the same parent company as Mashable.)

"We've deployed a change which has restored dashboard services. We are still working to remediate broad application services impact," read the most recent update on Cloudflare's status page.

Like the recent AWS outage, Cloudflare is one of the major pillars of the internet. When it goes down, the downstream effects are serious and vast — as we're seeing Tuesday.

What is Cloudflare?

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 16:51

For the second time this year, Cloudflare has experienced major issues — this time disrupting a wide range of platforms after what the company called an "unusual spike in traffic."

If you're not familiar with Cloudflare, you're not alone. Often described as "the biggest company you've never heard of," Cloudflare manages and secures traffic for roughly 20 percent of the web.

SEE ALSO: Cloudflare outage cause revealed: This is what happened. What is Cloudflare?

Cloudflare is an internet infrastructure and cloud computing provider that functions similarly to Amazon Web Services. The company hosts numerous online services, but it's best known as a global Content Delivery Network, which speeds up websites by routing them through servers located closer to users. In practice, Cloudflare acts as a giant internet middleman — the thing that makes a U.S.-hosted site load quickly even if you're browsing from halfway around the world.

Cloudflare has servers everywhere, and they can cache a huge amount of content. That allows the company to spread traffic across thousands of nodes — individual servers in Cloudflare’s global network — each capable of handling a high volume of requests on its own without passing everything back to the original server. It keeps sites from getting slammed all at once and reduces the chances of an overload.

Your local Cloudflare node is also almost always several hops closer than the server where the site is actually hosted. A hop is just one step in the journey your data takes as it moves through the internet. Fewer hops mean less distance and less time waiting for information to move between points. That shorter path translates to lower latency and faster overall load times.

Because Cloudflare's software underpins so many businesses, outages like this have a significant impact. Tuesday's disruption rippled across the web, taking down or slowing services including OpenAI's ChatGPT, the social platform X, and even digital tools for NJ Transit.

Snag the best NFL Sunday Ticket deal of the season: just $12/month

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 16:48

SAVE $102: As of Nov. 18, you can get NFL Sunday Ticket on sale for just $48 for the rest of the season. That's 68% off its most recent discounted list price of $150 and over $100 in savings.

Opens in a new window Credit: NFL / YouTube TV NFL Sunday Ticket 4 payments of $12/mo Get Deal

As football fans know, watching NFL games when you're a fan of a non-local team is the most unnecessarily complicated pastime. As a Ravens fan living in Tennessee, I wholeheartedly relate. The only legitimate and legal way to watch every live out-of-market regular season Sunday broadcast is via NFL Sunday Ticket. And it is outrageously expensive.

Fortunately, if you've gone this long without subscribing, you've been rewarded with a pretty solid Black Friday deal. As of Nov. 18, new users can get NFL Sunday Ticket on sale for just $48 (billed as four payments of $12) for the rest of the season. Typically, the full season costs — gulp — over $300 or $85 per month. However, it was recently discounted to $150 since we're over halfway through the season. That means the latest price drop saves you about 68% or $102.

There are seven weeks left in the regular season. That translates to less than $7 per week of football. Realistically, that's cheaper than going to a local bar (and paying for food and drinks) to watch it, so we think it's worth forking over the cash.

NFL Sunday Ticket is the league's own premium sports package. It broadcasts NFL regular season games that are unavailable on your local channels — specifically Sunday afternoon games on Fox and CBS. You can get it as an individual channel on YouTube or as an add-on to YouTube TV. Both options are available for new users at the $48 discount price through Dec. 1.

This bundle comes with everything you could want to get started with audio recording with DJI: two transmitters, one charging case, four windscreens, one receiver, two magnetic clips, and more goodies. At just 10 grams, it's perfectly portable, and small enough to fit in any pack. Plus, you get about 48 hours of battery life per use when you factor in the charging case, with 5 minutes of charging netting you an hour of power.

The mic can reach up to 400 meters of range so you can move about when recording, and it has two levels of noise cancellation that can help you best tweak the mic for how you plan on using it. Mashable's Bethany Allard took it for a spin and praised it for shining "in noisier settings", with "crisp and clear audio". It's an extremely versatile mic setup that can work for just about anyone, even if you have higher noise levels you're working with.

Whether you're already a content creator or you're looking to become one, this mic package is an excellent start, especally at this price.

Apple Podcasts having issues as internet outage continues

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 15:55

If you're trying to play an episode on Apple Podcasts, you might have an issue today.

Apple's podcasting platform was seemingly disrupted on Tuesday morning due to a large-scale Cloudflare outage that saw major online platforms affected. At 6:48 AM ET, Cloudflare reported it was "investigating an issue which impacts multiple customers" with "widespread 500 errors." At 7:21 a.m. ET, Cloudflare reported "seeing services recover, but customers may continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates as we continue remediation efforts."

According to Apple's system status page, there are no current issues with Apple platforms; however, at the time of writing, Apple Podcasts is unavailable to Mashable staff who tried to access it, as well as users posting on social media.

In a statement to Mashable via email, Cloudflare said, "We saw a spike in unusual traffic to one of Cloudflare's services beginning at 11:20 UTC. That caused some traffic passing through Cloudflare's network to experience errors. We do not yet know the cause of the spike in unusual traffic. Is ChatGPT down? Yes, but theres still a way to connect.

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 15:51

UPDATE: Nov. 18, 2025, 10:21 a.m. EST As of 10:18 a.m. ET, OpenAI reported that its services had been restored. The latest message on its status page reads: "All impacted services have now fully recovered. The detailed Root Cause Analysis (RCA) will be published in the next 5 business days." You can read our original story on the outage below.

Many users who attempted to log in to the ChatGPT website this morning were met with an error message: "Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed."

At Downdetector, hundreds of users were similarly reporting problems, starting around 6:30 a.m. ET and then ramping up significantly throughout the morning. (Disclosure: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, the same parent company as Mashable.)

SEE ALSO: Cloudflare outage list: X, OpenAI, Canva, Spotify, more impacted

And at 7:12 a.m. ET, OpenAI confirmed on a status page that it was investigating a problem with some of its websites. A later update on the OpenAI website reads, "We have confirmed that the incident is caused by an issue with one of our third-party service providers. We will provide updates as they become available."

The issue is connected to the ongoing Cloudflare outage. ChatGPT is one of many affected services, which also include X, Grindr, Canva, Spotify, and YouTube. When a major cloud computing platform, such as AWS or Cloudflare, experiences a problem, it can cause ripple effects throughout the World Wide Web.

However, we do have some good news for ChatGPT users. The AI chatbot's iOS app appears to be functioning normally, as of this writing. It's specifically the ChatGPT website that appears to be suffering problems.

It's too soon to say what caused the Cloudflare outage. The latest update from Cloudflare states that the cloud services platform was "working on restoring service for application services customers."

This is a developing story...

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

Grindr and other gay dating apps down

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 15:31

Bad news for anyone trying to get some action on Grindr today — the app is down due to a widespread Cloudflare outage. The internet service posted on Tuesday morning that it was investigating an issue with its global network.

The top of Grindr's status page states that the team began investigating an issue at 8:52 ET, and confirmed minutes later that it was due to Cloudflare.

SEE ALSO: Cloudflare down: What we know about the outage so far

It gets worse: another gay dating app, Sniffies, is down too, according to Downdetector. (Disclosure: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, which also owns Mashable).

Fellow gay dating apps SCRUFF and JACK'D also appear to be having errors. Both are run by Amazon Web Services.

If there's one solace to those looking for a hookup, it's that a slew of other websites, including X and Uber, are down as well.

Amazon is almost giving away the Fire TV Stick 4K Select ahead of Black Friday

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 15:31

SAVE $30: As of Nov. 18, the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select is only $9.99 for select customers with the on-page coupon code STREAM4K at Amazon. That's 75% off its list price and its lowest price ever.

$39.99 Save $30 with on-page coupon code STREAM4K Get Deal

If a streaming stick is on your shopping list, there's no reason to wait for Black Friday to grab one. Amazon is practically giving away its new Fire TV Stick 4K Select.

As of Nov. 18, the Fire TV Stick 4K Select is down to just $9.99 at Amazon for select customers with the on-page coupon code STREAM4K. That's 75% off its list price of $39.99 and its lowest price ever by a landslide. Without the coupon code, it's still a pretty solid deal at $21.99, but $10 for a 4K streaming stick is honestly outrageous.

Unfortunately, the coupon code seems to only be available for select customers. Several members of Mashable's shopping team are able to see the code, while a few others can't. We're unsure how Amazon goes about selecting which customers are eligible, but congrats if you're one of Amazon's favorites.

You can find the coupon code underneath the pricing details at Amazon if you're one of the lucky ones. Credit: Screenshot: Amazon

The Fire TV 4K Select launched this fall as part of Amazon's newest Fire TV lineup. Whether or not we really needed another Fire TV Stick in general is debatable, but at this wildly low early Black Friday price, we're certainly not complaining. Amazon calls it the "most affordable 4K streaming stick yet." It offers vibrant 4K quality with HDR10+ support and a new operating system called Vega that is ultra-responsive and fast. Its plug-and-play design is the same as every other Fire TV Stick, and it will soon offer support for Alexa+, Xbox Game Pass, Amazon Luna, Amazon Kids+, and NordVPN.

X is down, along with a chunk of the internet

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 13:45

If you've been trying to check X to understand why large chunks of the internet are down, turns out it's impacted too.

The platform formerly known as Twitter was disrupted on Tuesday morning due to a large-scale Cloudflare outage. At 6:48 AM ET, Cloudflare reported it was "investigating an issue which impacts multiple customers" with "widespread 500 errors." At 7:21 AM ET, Cloudflare reported "seeing services recover, but customers may continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates as we continue remediation efforts."

One of these platforms is X, with users reporting issues with the social media site at the same time as the Cloudflare outage, according to Downdetector. (Disclosure: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, the same parent company as Mashable.)

Cloudflare outage list: X, OpenAI, Canva, Spotify, more impacted

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 13:42

UPDATE: Nov. 18, 2025, 11:41 a.m. EST Many and apps affected by the Cloudflare outage are coming back online. Mashable received the following emailed statement from Cloudflare: "Many of Cloudflare's services experienced a significant outage today beginning around 11:20 UTC. It was fully resolved at 14:30 UTC. The root cause of the outage was a configuration file that is automatically generated to manage threat traffic. The file grew beyond an expected size of entries and triggered a crash in the software system that handles traffic for a number of Cloudflare's services. "To be clear, there is no evidence that this was the result of an attack or caused by malicious activity.

Another day, another huge outage impacting sites across the internet.

At 11:48 UTC on Nov. 18, Cloudflare confirmed its global network is experiencing issues impacting "multiple customers." No, you're not experiencing déjà vu. This is not Cloudflare's first rodeo. Huge swathes of the internet went down in June 2025 due to Cloudflare disruption, resulting in problems for Twitch, Etsy, Discord, and Google. Familiarity with these kinds of events doesn't make them any less irritating.

In a statement to Mashable via email, Cloudflare said, "We saw a spike in unusual traffic to one of Cloudflare's services beginning at 11:20 UTC. SEE ALSO: Cloudflare outage cause revealed: This is what happened.

The situation is still developing, so we've catalogued sites and services for which users have reported difficulties via Downdetector during this latest Cloudflare outage.

Sites impacted by Cloudflare outage

According to Downdetector, here's a list of some of the sites seemingly affected by the Cloudflare outage (Disclosure: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, which also owns Mashable):

As of around 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday, it seemed like some of the affected services had started recovering. Amazon Web Services was not listing major issues on its status page, while other services like YouTube, Spotify, and X have slowly crept back to life. Facebook seemed to be working as well.

Similarly, the official status page for Riot Games' League of Legends (as well as its other products) indicated that there were no issues. Cloudflare itself posted an update on its status page saying that "the incident is now resolved." There may very well be lingering effects or even more to come because the internet is unpredictable, but for now, it seems like the hard part is over.

Want to chat on Roblox? Youll need to verify your age.

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 13:00

The gaming platform Roblox will begin using age estimation technology for users who want to chat, according to the company's announcement Tuesday.

The measure, which rolls out in phases through January, is Roblox's latest step toward improving safety features for young users. The platform has more than 151 million daily average users, one-third of whom are younger than 13.

Roblox says the new policy positions the company as the first online gaming and communications platform to make chat accessible following a facial age check, calling the move "a new industry benchmark for safety."

SEE ALSO: Roblox: A parent's guide to keeping your kids safe

Like many digital platforms, Roblox has been under increasing pressure from child safety advocates and the parents of alleged victims to better protect minors from child predation, among other harms. The Dolman Law Group has filed 30 complaints against the company for allegedly exposing minors to sexual exploitation and abuse. Other lawsuits against Roblox, including one filed recently by the Texas state attorney general, make similar claims.

Predators have identified minors on Roblox and cultivated relationships with them via chat and messaging, sometimes encouraging them to leave the platform for other communications apps, like Discord.

Starting Tuesday, Roblox age estimation will be voluntary. It will become mandatory globally in January 2026. However, the platform will initially require it in Australia, New Zealand, and The Netherlands beginning in December.

Age estimation takes place on the Roblox app, but is completed by the company Persona. The technology uses video and still imagery to estimate a user's age. Roblox says those images will be deleted immediately after processing, and will not be stored.

Roblox hopes the approach will protect user privacy. A recent security breach of a Discord vendor may have compromised the government IDs of about 70,000 users, raising fresh questions about how to verify age while still protecting user data and personal information.

Roblox must also account for bad actors who try to use fake photos or pictures of another person to evade accurate age estimation. Kaufman said that the combination of video and still imaging helps prevent that. Additionally, the company will deploy fraud checks.

Roblox players will be grouped into age categories with limits on who can speak to each other. Credit: Roblox These two Roblox users could not chat with each other because of age differences. Credit: Roblox

Once a user's age is estimated, Roblox will assign them to one of six age groups: under 9; 9 to 12 years old; 13 to 15 years old; 16 to 17 years old; 18 to 20 years old; and 21 and over. Users can then chat with members in their same age group or a similar range. While a 12 year old could chat with a user that's 9, for example, they will not be able to communicate with users in the 18- to 20-year-old group. If a user wants to appeal their grouping, they can submit ID verification.

Matt Kaufman, chief safety officer for Roblox, said in a press briefing that the age estimation technology is "very accurate." Third-party testing of Persona found it has a mean absolute error rate of 1.37 years

Roblox recently started requiring age estimation for users who want to take advantage of a new feature called "Trusted Connections." The feature allows teens between the ages of 13 and 17 to communicate via voice and chat without filters. Roblox continues to monitor all conversations for "critical harm," such as grooming.

"Proactive tools like age estimation are key to building a safer and more positive digital world for kids and teens," Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute, said in a statement about Roblox's age estimation efforts.

On Tuesday morning, the nonprofit advocacy group ParentsTogether Action planned to hold a virtual protest on the platform, at a custom-designed Roblox headquarters, where participants in the form of non-playable characters will carry signs. Protesters will deliver a digital petition with over 12,000 signatures calling on Roblox to implement more safety features, like defaulting all children under 18 to maximum privacy settings.

The petition implores the company to fundamentally change its approach to child safety, declaring: "Roblox must stop being a playground for predators."

Alls Fairs most WTF lines of dialogue

Tue, 11/18/2025 - 12:36

All's Fair is four episodes in and reader, the dialogue is dialoguing.

Ryan Murphy's latest Hulu series is probably all over your feed right now, the legal drama seeing Allura Grant (Kim Kardashian), Emerald Greene (Niecy Nash), and Liberty Ronson (Naomi Watts) starting their own women-led, women-only law firm with Dina Standish (Glenn Close). Between clients, they're facing down a particularly pissed-off Carrington Lane (Sarah Paulson), a gun lawyer they didn't invite to the party (because she routinely stole their lunches or something).

SEE ALSO: Critics hate 'All's Fair,' but the internet has other thoughts

Critics and viewers are dramatically divided on All's FairSlate's David Mack called it "one of the worst TV shows of all time, the Hollywood Reporter's Angie Han called it "unforgivably dull," and the Guardian's Lucy Mangan called it "fascinatingly, existentially terrible." The show seems to be going for Dynasty "I own 51 percent of this company" energy, and whether it achieves that or not is your call. But without context, the series is absolutely meme fodder for the one-liners this melodramatic cast drops again and again.

Here's some lines from All's Fair that saw me spit out my coffee, fall off my chair, and throw myself into the hedge.

"Come on, gloves!"

Emerald cheers up her new divorce client with a compliment.

"Never mind, Cooze McGees."

Carrington gets mad she's not invited to join the firm.

"From cocktails to cock rings all in one 24-hour period — God, I love my job."

Liberty gets briefed on a case.

"Pin your wig down, Allura, because this might blow it back."

Emerald about to serve up hard cold truths.

"In honor of your big milestone, I present you with a fruit basket, organic and lightly brushed with salmonella and fecal matter. Eat a melon ball, then maybe you can all give the Ozempic you’re mainlining a rest, you fat, treacherous lawn chairs."

Carrington sends a fruit basket for the firm's 10-year anniversary.

"What we have here is knowledge, and knowledge is the key in the lock. All we have to do is turn it just the right way."

Allura contributes to a briefing.

Emerald Greene (Niecy Nash) and Allura Grant (Kim Kardashian). Credit: Hulu "You don't give us what we want, everything we want, those eggs will never see the inside of Allura's hoo-ha, because I will personally slather them in A1 Steak Sauce and eat them with a side of fries."

Carrington, uh, negotiates?

"Well, it is New York City, which is an island, so it's safe to assume there are plenty of other fish in the sea."

Liberty offers romantic advice.

"Somebody has a revenge vagina!"

Emerald being supportive.

"Will Jane Austen really help you to adjust to aging and gravity and public opinion?"

Allura gets real.

"You know me — I'd do anything for you, except represent you, which I wouldn't do even if I were penniless and starving on a street corner, forced to blow a priest with the chlamydia for a bowl of refried beans."

Carrington politely turns down a job.

Featured Video For You Elvira on drag queens, Vincent Price, and her new cookbook — from hell! "Piggy wiggly titties, or as they call them on the farm, sow teats."

I am not giving you any context for this Emerald moment.

"Mayor McHead Cheese, Diane Sawyer, Lola Falana, George Washington."

Carrington addresses her nemeses outside court.

"Allura, when are you going to get mad? When are you going to twist off his scrotum and feed it to him in small, raggedy pieces? When are we doing revenge?"

Liberty offers a suggestion.

"Now, you may think I'm being a greedy little pig bottom..."

Carrington begins a sentence.

"Bore someone else with your directions, I know where I'm going."

Carrington doing the most.

"Oh, Dina Standish, you old plow horse, I thought for sure they would have shipped you off to the glue factory by now."

Carrington throws one of her lighter barbs at Dina.

"Boy, do I love coming here, walking down that hallway shaped like a clown's cervix."

Carrington arrives in the office.

"Am I making myself clear, Sir F*cks-A-Lot?"

Carrington addresses a client.

"See you in court, c*ntburger."

Carrington signs off.

All's Fair is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
