People are eager to buy the new iPhone 17, says analyst

Mashable - Mon, 09/15/2025 - 13:35

Apple's new iPhones are selling well in pre-orders, though data is less clear for one particular model.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared his thoughts on the demand for Apple's new iPhone lineup on X on Monday. According to Kuo, the pre-order demand for the iPhone 17 series during the first weekend of pre-orders was "better than that of the iPhone 16 last year."

The most expensive model — the powerful iPhone 17 Pro Max — is reportedly in the highest demand, but the other iPhone 17 variants appear to be doing well, too.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

As for Apple's new iPhone Air, it doesn't seem to be doing too well, per Kuo, though even the analyst himself acknowledges that it's too early to tell. He says that the demand for the iPhone Air "appears to be lower than that of the iPhone 16 Plus in the same period last year," judging by Apple shipping times. But the production volume of the iPhone Air was reportedly about three times that of the iPhone 16 Plus in comparable periods of the year, which means that the iPhone Air might actually be selling really well, it's just that Apple is making more of them.

"Therefore, it is more objective to observe demand after a period of sales," concludes Kuo.

Apple's new iPhones were launched last Tuesday at the company's annual September launch event, and became available for pre-order on Friday. They will be available in stores on Friday, Sept. 19.

Britt Lowers Emmys acceptance speech contained a hilarious Severance Easter egg

Mashable - Mon, 09/15/2025 - 13:26

Severance star Britt Lower took home the award for best lead actress in a drama series at the 2025 Emmys on Sunday, and she didn't miss the perfect opportunity to give fans a little Easter egg.

Lower's speech in the video above is normal enough, thanking various people before finally thanking her Severance character, Helly R, "for choosing me." But eagle-eyed viewers will notice that the words "LET ME OUT" are written in all caps on the back of the notepaper she's reading from, in a brilliant nod to her "innie" character's attempts to alert the wider world to Lumon Industries' dodgy dealings in the show.

Innie Helly R. would surely be proud.

Nate Bargatz Emmys opening monologue had a genius plan to keep speeches short

Mashable - Mon, 09/15/2025 - 13:10

Comedian Nate Bargatz' opening monologue as host of the 2025 Emmys featured a genius scheme at its heart: a way to minimise the nemesis of any awards show, which is of course speeches running too long.

"To start the show, I am going to donate $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America," says Bargatz in the clip above, after making it clear to all Emmy winners that they have 45 seconds for each of their acceptance speeches. "If you stay at 45 seconds, it stays at $100,000. Every second you go over 45 seconds, we will deduct $1000 away from the Boys and Girls Club. I know, I know, it's tough [...] It's brutal. What are you going to do, though? I can't change it, this is a game I made up."

Bargatz goes on to explain that for every second speeches go over 45 seconds, they'll deduct $1000 from the total, but for every second under they'll add $1000 back on.

"Don't go crazy though, 'cuz like, I am paying for this," says Bargatz. "Some of you go over a little, some go under. Do the right thing."

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Hacks star Hannah Einbinders Emmys win speech is going viral

Mashable - Mon, 09/15/2025 - 12:06

Hacks star Hannah Einbinder landed her first Emmy win after four nominations on Sunday, taking home outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for her performance as comedy writer Ava Daniels.

"Thinking out loud here, I was just really committed to the personal narrative that I had that it was actually cooler to continue to lose," Einbinder said onstage at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards during her acceptance speech. "This is cool too! This is also punk rock."

Einbinder's fellow nominees were Abbott Elementary's Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph, The Studio's Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O'Hara, Jessica Williams for Shrinking, and Liza Colón-Zayas for The Bear. During her speech, the actor thanked her Emmy-winning Hacks colleague Jean Smart and series creators Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky "for changing my life in every conceivable way," as well as the cast and crew.

To close, Einbinder shouted out her go-to NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles. But she also gained audible applause for her final statement showing support for Palestine and condemning U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has been enforcing the Trump administration's harsh immigration policies and mass deportations.

"I just want to say, finally, go Birds, f*** ICE, and free Palestine."

Einbinder was among 4,500 entertainment industry figures, including Olivia Colman, Ava DuVernay, Yorgos Lanthimos, Mark Ruffalo, Tilda Swinton, Javier Bardem, Ayo Edebiri, Josh O’Connor, and thousands more, who signed an open letter published on Wednesday, pledging "not to screen films, appear at or otherwise work with Israeli film institutions — including festivals, cinemas, broadcasters and production companies — that are implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people."

Paramount, which owns Emmys broadcaster CBS, condemned the pledge. Einbinder's speech was reportedly bleeped in the live broadcast. The video, which has been shared by various media outlets and users on X, TikTok, and YouTube, is clocking up the views.

Tramell Tillman makes history with Emmys win for Severance

Mashable - Mon, 09/15/2025 - 10:50

Call the Lumon marching band, Tramell Tillman just made history at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Severance star is the first Black man to win outstanding supporting actor in a drama series at the Emmys, taking to the Peacock Theater stage on Sunday to be honored for his sublime performance as complex antagonist Seth Milchick.

SEE ALSO: Britt Lower's Emmys acceptance speech contained a hilarious 'Severance' Easter egg

Tillman was applauded by his fellow nominees: Severance co-stars John Turturro and Zach Cherry, and The White Lotus' Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, and Sam Rockwell, and Paradise's James Marsden. Movingly, the award winner spent his acceptance speech honoring one very important person.

"'You remember what you want to remember. You make time for what you want to make time for. Do the work. Show up. And most importantly, for the love of God, don't embarrass me in public.' My first acting coach was tough, y'all, but all great mothers are," said Tillman, acknowledging his mother sitting in the audience with the Severance cast — including fellow Emmy winner Britt Lower.

"Mama, you were there for me when no one else was and no one else would show up. Your loving kindness stays with me, and this is for you," he added.

According to Variety, it's the only acting category that had yet to award a Black actor since the Emmys began in 1949. The publisher also pointed out that the last time Black actors were nominated for supporting actor was in 2021: Michael K. Williams (Lovecraft Country), Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian), and O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) — Tobias Menzies won for The Crown. Tillman was not nominated for an Emmy for Severance Season 1.

So, waffle party?

For all the 2025 Emmy winners, Mashable's got you covered.

The price isn't the only impressive thing about this deal. The laptop itself is amazing, and my favorite Apple product. It's powered by Apple's new M4 chip, meaning it's both fast and efficient. I've found it can handle all kinds of multitasking, and most importantly, doesn't start to lag when I have far too many tabs open. According to Apple, it can also handle heavy video editing and jumping between apps.

Review: iPadOS 26 finally made me an iPad person

Mashable - Mon, 09/15/2025 - 10:00

Usually, when you hear about Liquid Glass, Apple's new design language, you hear about it in the context of iOS and iPhones. I get it — there are 1 billion active iPhones on Earth, including mine. But Liquid Glass isn't just coming to your Apple phone. Our Macs, iPads, Apple Watches, and TVs are also getting the design upgrade. And in my testing, you can really appreciate the subtleties of the fluid new look on the larger iPad screen.

But iPadOS 26 doesn't just put a futuristic new face on your tablet. It also arrives with critical new features like multitasking and windowing that make your iPad more like a laptop than ever before.

I've been testing out the iPadOS 26 beta ahead of its official launch today (it's available as a free software upgrade for all compatible iPads). I'm ready to share my thoughts on what works, what really works, and what's still a work in progress. I tested iPadOS 26 using an 11-inch iPad Air (M3) provided by Apple for this review.

Liquid Glass is gorgeous, and it shines on the iPad Welcome to Liquid Glass on iPad. Credit: Screenshot: Timothy Beck Werth I love the look of Liquid Glass on iPadOS 26. Credit: Screenshot: Timothy Beck Werth

Apple introduced Liquid Glass at WWDC 2025, and at the time, I wrote about the divisive initial reaction. (Side note: What isn't divisive in 2025? Nothing, I'm afraid.) If you were worried about Liquid Glass, let me put you at ease — it looks phenomenal, and it operates as smooth as, well, glass.

Per Apple, Liquid Glass "combines the optical qualities of glass with a fluidity only Apple can achieve." What does that mean? Core elements of the user interface are now translucent and expressive, so when objects overlap or interact, new liquid-like animations cause a transparent light effect, as if you're looking through glass or water. It's never distracting, and often quite beautiful. The Control Center, Lock Screen, Camera, Preview, and other tools all look a touch more futuristic now.

I haven't experienced any lag with the subtle animations that occur when different widgets or icons meet at the edges. Liquid Glass also makes the simplest interactions a lot more satisfactory. In the updated camera app, switching between Photo, Video, Pano, and other settings causes the text to bend and refract.

I'm also a big fan of the new lock screen customization options. And while the translucent control center required some troubleshooting on iPhones, I've had no problems on the iPad.

Liquid Glass is the biggest update to Apple's visual aesthetic in 10 years, and for this tech editor, it's a success. While a lot of people are questioning the design of the new orange iPhone 17 Pro, for me, Liquid Glass feels more Jobs-ian, if you know what I mean.

iPad introduces Windows. No, not that Windows.

Sorry, I meant "Windowing," not Windows, as in Windows 11.

Yes, iPadOS 26 brings the ability to group apps in discrete windows, which can be dragged, expanded, and moved as you like. It's a neat trick for a tablet, and combined with multitasking, truly transforms the iPad into a MacBook-like device. So much so that I could see it sparking an existential crisis of sorts for some Apple users who previously owned both devices. Again, simply use your finger or the Magic Keyboard's trackpad, and you can easily organize your windows on the display. Gesture controls are also an option, though they come with a learning curve (more on that soon).

With multitasking, you can now view and use multiple apps and widgets simultaneously. Keep Google Docs open as you browse the web and ask ChatGPT for ideas. Or bring up the Notes app to jot down reminders while you watch a video. Use Apple Pencil to draw something on your tablet while you watch a tutorial video on an external display.

When I set up my iPad Air with the Magic Keyboard case and my external display, it really felt like using my MacBook, except the iPad is much easier to travel with and move from room to room. In fact, the iPad Air's M3 chip is actually significantly better than my work laptop's M1 chip. It's enough to make my old MacBook sick with jealousy.

This is also going to be phenomenally useful for pro-level power users on the M4 iPad Pro. I know video editors who depend on that iPad's advanced screen for video editing, and these iPadOS 26 upgrades will make it much easier to use your iPad in professional situations. A new Background Tasks feature will let you access other apps while a large video file exports in the background, for instance. So, for power users, artists, creative professionals, and productivity-minded folks, iPadOS 26 is one of the biggest updates to the iPad in years.

Of course, this existential crisis cuts both ways. If your iPad is basically a MacBook, and you already have a MacBook, do you really need an iPad? For users who like to use their iPad for streaming, gaming, and chatting, these new features will be overkill. I suspect that work is the last thing some users want to do on their iPad. Still, even for these users, iPadOS 26 has some cool new features.

The new Files, Preview, and Menu Bar

If you're going to use your iPad more like a laptop, then you need a better way to access and organize your files. So, it's no surprise that iPadOS 26 comes with a new Files app. It's much easier to find files saved on your iPad and iCloud. A new list view, customizable folders, and the ability to drag files into apps in the Dock all work together here for a better UX.

On top of that, literally, are more features that will be familiar to Mac users. When you have an app like Chrome or Preview open, you can swipe down and reveal a full Menu Bar, where you can access the File, Edit, View, Window, and Help drop-downs you're used to accessing on laptops. Likewise, the red, yellow, green navigation bubbles that appear on the upper left of a window are now on iPad, letting you minimize and expand apps with a tap of your finger.

The Menu Bar comes to iPad. Credit: Apple

You can also use this to quickly organize your screen. Right-click, and you'll see options that let you fill the left, right, bottom, or top half of your screen with the app. This didn't always work perfectly — it's one of the few issues I found with the beta version of iPadOS 26, but on the whole, it works well. You can even use gestures to organize your screen.

The Preview tool contains one of the coolest Liquid Glass animations, with a spyglass that zooms in on the screen and your files. It also has more practical tools for working with PDFs and creating images.

What else is new with iPadOS 26?

There are a lot of new features Apple wants iPad users to know about, some of which are more helpful than others for me personally. The much-discussed Live Translation tool is also available on iPads (in the Phone, FaceTime, and Messages apps), though Mashable is still in the process of testing this Apple Intelligence feature. I will say that based on what I've seen, Apple is still playing catch-up with Google Pixel's live translation tools, but that's now a familiar story for Apple's AI tools.

Ditto the new options in Image Playground, where you can create images, edit photos, and make custom Genmoji. I played around with this tool, but to be honest, don't have much use for it in my day-to-day life. If I need to use an AI image generator or editor, I'll go straight to ChatGPT, Midjourney, or Gemini, and I don't know that I've ever felt like I needed more emoji options. Still, I could see my parents having a lot of fun with this toolkit. My nieces and nephews also love playing around with photo and video filters, and I could see them creating all sorts of fun Genmoji creations (with their cool Uncle Tim's help, of course).

Other new features include:

  • Shortcuts: You can create new automations that tap into Apple Intelligence.

  • Phone: Your iPad isn’t just more like a Mac; with iPadOS 26, the Phone app comes to iPad.

  • Apple Music: You can now translate lyrics and use Apple Intelligence to seamlessly transition between songs, DJ-style

  • Gaming: An all-new Games app provides a better gaming experience; an overlay tool lets you adjust settings without leaving the game

  • Audio recording: For professionals who need to capture audio, you have more tools for recording sound.

iPadOS 26 takes some practice Learning how to organize windows takes some practice. Credit: Screenshot: Timothy Beck Werth

My only real quibble with iPadOS 26 is that it has a bit of a learning curve, which is to be expected. It's not just the new tools and features, however. If iPadOS 26 inspires you to use your tablet more like a laptop, then you'll have to unlearn some movements and muscle memory. When I connected the iPad to my external monitor and Magic Keyboard, my hands kept wanting to treat it like my MacBook, and I'd have to remember that iPadOS runs a little differently than macOS. The new gestures and swipes needed to properly use the new windowing, organization, and Menu Bar features also take some practice.

For technophiles like myself, that's fine. But I'm also thinking of my mother-in-law, who uses her iPad every day to play Wordle and The Sims. I think she'll have a harder time adjusting to all the new tools and may need a bit more of a tutorial than Apple provides.

Here's my final verdict: On the whole, iPadOS 26 makes the iPad a more formidable and versatile gadget. That would be enough of an upgrade on its own, but combined with the beautiful new design elements of Liquid Glass, iPadOS 26 represents a big leap forward.

You can learn more about iPadOS 26 at the Apple website. To access the free upgrade on your iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Updates.

Adulthood review: Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario team up for corpse-centric comedy

Mashable - Mon, 09/15/2025 - 10:00

A soul-scratching milestone of becoming a grown-up is the realization that your parents aren't just your parents, they're people. They have names. They have lives outside of you, and they have flaws. This jarring epiphany is taken to darkly comic extremes in Adulthood, which stars Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario as siblings who discover a corpse hidden in their childhood home.

This premise seems like something out of Dateline, but director Alex Winter plumbs Michael M.B. Galvin's script for heart, humor, and some cringe-inducing truths. The result is a comedy that's amusingly irreverent, surprisingly twisted, and fucked-up fun.

Adulthood is like Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead's twisted sister.

Gad and Scodelario star as siblings who are practically estranged at the film's start. While Megan's been living in their hometown, raising her two sons, loving her professor husband, and selling sketchy leggings online in a seeming pyramid screen, her brother Noah took off to Los Angeles to become a screenwriter, though he's more focused on smoking pot than selling spec scripts.

They're reunited by bad news: Their mother Judy (Ingunn Omholt) has taken a bad turn, and is in the hospital. Luckily, her homecare nurse (Billie Lourd) was on hand. Unluckily, returning to their childhood home leads to one shitty discovery after another. A leak in the basement den not only leads to a bunch of their childhood treasures being damaged, it's also ruined the paneling of one wall. And when they probe this strange wet spot, they find a skeleton in a tracksuit.

Far from a murder mystery, Adulthood is a tale of a comedic cover-up. Sure, Megan and Noah are shocked to find a body in the walls of this suburban home, mere yards from where their mom stored Pokémon cards and old VHS tapes. But they immediately know who this skeleton belongs to, and the big question is, "Now what?" Reasoning that coming clean would only reignite old scars for the victim's family and cause new problems for their own, they decide the best thing to do is dump the remains somewhere remote. But it turns out neither of these siblings shares their parents' skill for criminal cover-ups. So, a comedy of errors ensues, involving blackmail, more kills, and a creepy cousin named Bodhi (Anthony Carrigan)

Don’t miss out on our latest stories: Add Mashable as a trusted news source in Google.

While their mom is still alive, she's incapable of taking care of this grisly business. So, like the treasured 1991 comedy Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead, Adulthood explores the wild feeling of having to be the grown-up when things truly go to hell. Except here instead of finding their inner girlboss, Noah and Megan have to find their inner Robert Durst.

Kaya Scodelario and Josh Gad make a solid comedy duo.

The English actress is best known for dramatic roles, like the British TV series Skins, Andrea Arnold's feral adaptation of Wuthering Heights, the YA Mazerunner trilogy, and the gator creature feature Crawl. But here, she plays a terrific straight man to Gad's frantic clown. To his credit, the Broadway and Disney actor tones down his signature hyperactive energy; Noah is leagues away from Book of Mormon's Elder Cunningham or Frozen's Olaf. Here, he's a manchild who turns to video games, weed, and porn in times of stress — or just in general.

This means that while the siblings' mission is to help their mom get away with murder, the central conflict of the movie is actually about brother and sister learning what it means to be a grown-up. Having fucked off to LA, Noah hasn't had to deal with his sister's life or his mom's declining health. He doesn't even remember the names of his nephews. But Megan's been using her busy role as working mom as an excuse to keep her distance from her brother and mom as well. (This is something the aforementioned caregiver acknowledges with a snarl as she drinks Noah's beer and lays down a number of shocking revelations.)

While Gad's freaking out as Noah, Megan's keeping her cool, making for punchlines that hit hard and cold. But beneath their contrast and this comedy is the question of what it means to be an adult. Is it defending your family at all costs? Or does it mean taking responsibility and facing the consequences? Or is there a third, more craven and comedic option?

Billie Lourd and Anthony Carrigan shine as weirdo supporting players.

Playing the threatening caregiver and the black sheep cousin, Lourd and Carrigan echo the siblings' dynamic, but they are in opposition. One is blackmailing the siblings while the other is called into defend them. And in this, the extremes of cold and calculating and hyper and impulsive are explored to the point that a diner scene between Lourd and Carrigan could be the best in the movie. Staring each other down while both characters swing for badass heft but come off whiffing, they make it seem like anything is possible. And actually, from there the movie gets less exciting as the answers of Galvin's script become less interesting or even feasible.

Adulthood is more focused on the dysfunctional family comedy aspect than its crime thriller thread, which means that as the stakes get higher, the plot holes get bigger and more distracting. At one point. Noah confidently declares he knows how to best ditch a body because he worked on Blue Bloods. It's a fine joke. But for fans of true crime or even cozy crime, it's too easy to clock the clues being dropped, and frustratingly never acknowledged. This makes for an unsatisfying ending, as it's not so much ambiguous as unearned.

Still, if you're seeking something funky, funny, and charmingly chaotic, Adulthood delivers.

Adulthood was reviewed out of its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie opens in theaters Sept. 19, and comes to digital on Sept. 23.
