Original PS1 vs Emulation: Is The Difference Worth the Hassle?

How-To Geek - Mon, 09/01/2025 - 22:00

Like most people I've been reliving my favorite games from the original PlayStation era using the magic of emulation. However, I've always felt like there was something missing from this experience—and the original hardware promised to fill that gap.

The Sonos Beam Gen 2 soundbar is $100 off in Amazons Labor Day sale

Mashable - Mon, 09/01/2025 - 22:00

Many (if not most) TVs come with pretty lame built-in speakers. The same can be said of most projectors. But sound is such an important part of the TV, movie, and sports-watching experience. You deserve to have great sound in addition to a great-quality display. Instead of making do with your TVs internal speakers, upgrade to a soundbar while this top-tier model is discounted during Amazon's Labor Day sale.

As of Sept. 1, the Sonos Roam Gen 2 soundbar is on sale at Amazon for $399, marked down from the list price of $499. That's a 20% discount that takes $100 off the price. It's also worth mentioning the sale price on the Sonos Arc Ultra soundbar during this Labor Day sale. The Arc Ultra is down to $899 from its normal price of $999. That's a record-low price for Mashable's favorite upgraded soundbar.

Sonos is well known as one of the higher-end audio brands and the Sonos Beam Gen 2 soundbar aims to impress. With Dolby Atmos, the sound is designed to mimic a 3D experience and it'll pair well with other Sonos devices. Move the sound output from the Beam Gen 2 to your Sonos Ace headphones with one touch.

In Mashable's review of the best soundbars, the Sonos Beam Gen 2 earns the accolade of the best options for Sonos households. "When it goes on sale (like it does for Prime Day), it offers impressive value for the money," notes the review. "For customers who are already in the Sonos smart home ecosystem, it's an easy and affordable way to give your TV setup an instant boost. The Beam is incredibly easy to set up, and because it can sync with your other Sonos products, it's easy to build a genuine home theater surround sound system."

From the soundbar, you'll be able to stream your favorite music, audiobooks, and podcasts when not busy watching TV. And you can do all of that while you're TV is still powered off. Plus, you can use the Sonos app to control the sound and settings. If opening an app isn't your thing, you can control the Sonos Beam Gen 2 from your TV's remote, touch controls, voice commands, or Apple AirPlay 2.

While it's down to $399 on Labor Day, gift yourself and your TV the Sonos Beam Gen 2 soundbar. You can finally ditch your TVs built-in speakers in time for all the best fall shows that begin soon.

The Top 8 Minivans That Shatter Stereotypes

How-To Geek - Mon, 09/01/2025 - 21:30

Minivan sales are experiencing one of the most unlikely glow-ups of 2025. Names like the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Kia Carnival, and Chrysler Pacifica are part of a resurgence in sales, and we like it. It may be due to the tariff threats looming with consumers seeking a deal before any price hikes, but we'll take it. Do you remember a time when the best minivans seemed unstoppable? The golden age of the soccer mom car, with its reign, was however short-lived.

It's Labor Day, folks. That means we're saying so long to summer, heading back to school, and saving big on tech. Apple, unsurprisingly, is offering some impressive discounts — some as good if not better than Prime Day — on MacBooks, iPads, AirPods, and more. Skip the Apple Store and head to Amazon to score your favorite Apple gadgets for the best prices.

Here are the best Apple deals on Labor Day.

Check out our full review of the M4 Apple MacBook Air.

Not only is the M4 MacBook Air our favorite MacBook for most people, but it also earned a top spot on our list of the best laptops overall for 2025. Even at full price, we think it's an impressive value, but we certainly aren't going to argue with $200 savings. The Air can tackle general tasks with ease, plus it can handle some video editing and audio work. If you don't need the heavier specs of the Pro, you can keep a lot of extra cash in your pocket by opting for the Air instead.

"Apple's new iPad Air doesn't feel very new, as the only major difference is the new M3 chip," Mashable's reviewer writes of the M3 iPad Air released earlier this year. That's not a bad thing, though. Besides the hefty new processor that unlocks Apple Intelligence, the M3 Air features better battery life, a more advanced Magic Keyboard (optional add-on), and pass-through charging. We think it's the best iPad option for more people, especially now that it's down to just $449 at Amazon. That's its best price on record.

A great value for the price, the AirPods 4 feature personalized spatial audio, Siri interactions, voice isolation, a comfortable fit that stays put, improved bass, mids, and highs, and a more compact charging case that's easier to keep tabs on. While these don't offer noise cancellation (that'll cost you another $49), our reviewer was extremely impressed with their sound. They last a little longer than the noise-cancelling option at about five hours per charge (30 with the charging case), making them a great daily driver. This is only the second time the buds have dropped below the $90 threshold — the only other time being Prime Day, when they hit $89 even.

Whether you're ready or not for the pumpkin spice onslaught, Labor Day has arrived — and so have the sales. It's easy to get sale fatigue, but Amazon's Labor Day event is worth paying attention to. We're seeing some items drop to prices that are even cheaper than they were during Prime Day (including tons of iPads and headphones), making this a genuinely good time to shop.

To help you sort through the deals, we've rounded up the best ones you can get at Amazon right now.

Best Echo device deal Opens in a new window Credit: Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen, 2023 release) $64.99 at Amazon
$89.99 Save $25 Get Deal Why we like it

The Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen, 2023 release) is a great pick if you're looking for a smart display, and it's currently on sale for $64.99. That's a $25 savings off the regular $89.99 price. While this isn't an all-time low (it dropped to $59.99 during last year's sale), it's a solid discount. The price may dip another $5 as Labor Day gets closer, but we don't expect it to get much lower.

For that price, you get a 5.5-inch display that's perfect for following recipes, making video calls, or streaming TV shows. It's Alexa-enabled for hands-free voice commands, and the built-in camera lets you check in on your home or view a compatible video doorbell feed when you're away.

If you'd rather have a screen you can carry with you, the Apple iPad 11-inch (A16, 128GB) is on sale for $299, down from its regular price of $349. That's a $50 savings on a top-notch tablet. While this isn't the lowest price we've ever seen — it dropped a bit lower on Prime Day — it's still a pretty good deal.

With an A16 chip and a Liquid Retina display, this model is ideal for students or creatives on the go. It runs on iPadOS and is compatible with the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard Folio, so you can multitask like never before.

A perennial favorite, the Sony WH-1000XM5 noise-canceling headphones are on sale for $298, down from $399.99. That's a $101.99 savings and just $2 more than their Prime Day price.

These premium headphones are a Mashable Choice Award winner, and our team was even more impressed by them than the newer XM6 model, thanks to their 30-hour battery life, comfortable design, and sound quality.

Mashable’s deputy shopping and reviews editor, Miller Kern, writes, “I was truly impressed by the sound quality and noise cancellation in the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. As someone who primarily listens to music through AirPods Pro, the noise cancellation on the Sony headphones is a game-changer. I found myself reaching for these headphones over my AirPods and Sennheiser PXC 550-IIs.”

Read Mashable's full review of the Sonos Move 2.

We like the Sonos Move 2 more as a home speaker that's easy to move from room to room or a stationary tailgate or camping speaker, as it's a little too hefty to take on a hike or a beach trip. What it lacks in the portability department, however, it more than makes up for with its fantastic stereo sound, 24-hour battery life, and dynamic smart features. Mashable's reviewer Stan Schroeder writes, "This speaker is one of the best in class, and the quality of sound it produces is reason enough to consider it."

Thanks to an impending tariff-related price hike, Sonos products are only going to get pricier. So we recommend saving $100 on the Sonos Move 2 while you can.

Microsoft denies recent Windows 11 update is bricking SSDs

Mashable - Mon, 09/01/2025 - 17:56

The recent Windows 11 security update didn't cause those SSD failures, according to Microsoft (via BleepingComputer). But the root cause is still unknown.

Users began reporting their SSDs and HDDs getting bricked soon after installing a Windows update (KB5063878), released by Microsoft on Aug. 12. The issue was first noticed by Japanese users who reported failed and corrupted drives when working with large files or lots of files on SSDs that were over 60 percent full and had the new update installed. Users reported problems with SSD drives from brands including Corsair, Phison, Fikwot, Maxio, and others.

Microsoft investigated the issue and said they were unable to reproduce the issue, finding no link between between the Windows 11 update and the bricked drives. "After thorough investigation, Microsoft has found no connection between the August 2025 Windows security update and the types of hard drive failures reported on social media," said Microsoft said in an update to the service alert reported by Bleeping Computer.

Microsoft worked with controller-maker Phison to investigate why SSDs with their chips failed. Phison also said it was unable to reproduce any issues, but "continues to closely monitor the situation in collaboration with our industry partners," in a statement to Neowin.

Until the root cause is determined, Phison advised users to use a heatsink or thermal pad to prevent the device from overheating during long, power-heavy sessions. Additionally, a Phison spokesperson told BleepingComputer that users with over 60 percent storage used should "avoid downloading, copying, or writing large files" that are in the tens of gigabytes.

Man uses AirTag to track down stolen luggage, finds person wearing his clothes

Mashable - Mon, 09/01/2025 - 15:58

Here's another reminder that AirTags can do a lot more than help you find your keys. They can also help recover stolen luggage.

A man returning to his Los Angeles home from Salt Lake City in August used an Apple AirTag stored inside his suitcase to track it down after it was stolen from baggage claim, according to NBC Los Angeles. After searching multiple carousels, Daniel Scott checked his phone to try and locate his luggage with the AirTag inside and saw it moving away from the airport.

SEE ALSO: The Apple AirTag is a must-have item and it's still on sale after Labor Day

Scott said he sprinted to the rideshare lot and grabbed an Uber to follow the moving AirTag, according to the report. Meanwhile, his partner called LAX police and they traced the AirTag to an abandoned building nearby. When the police showed up and lined up several people who were in the abandoned building, Scott noticed one of them wearing his clothes, Scott told NBC. Police detained several people and Scott was able to get most of his clothes back, although they were scattered throughout the building and his suitcase had been destroyed.

Scott urged others to travel with the device if they can. "It just gave me a fighting chance to find my luggage and retrieve it," he told the outlet.

Apple AirTags were launched in 2021 as a coin-sized GPS gadget that could attach as a keychain or inside your wallet to help the forgetful relocate their stuff. But since then, AirTags have been used for a lot more than finding absentmindedly placed valuables. A London coupled successfully used an AirTag to track down their stolen Jaguar, and a man set up his own sting operation by attaching AirTags to power tools to uncover millions of dollars worth of stolen tools.

There's also a dark side to the convenient GPS-tracker. AirTags have been used as a stalking tool since they can easily be slipped into a bag or pocket. Apple teamed up with Google and other makers of Bluetooth trackers to send a push notification alerting users that there's an AirTag moving with them.

Airlines have used the increase in passengers using AirTags to improve their customer service offerings. Since last year, more than a dozen airlines have started allowing flyers to submit their AirTag data to track missing luggage in hopes of reuniting it with their owners quicker.

It's also a nice choice if you're interested in using your tablet as a laptop, but don't want to spend a ton of money."
