Reddit is blocking Wayback Machine from archiving users posts

Mashable - Tue, 08/12/2025 - 09:17

Reddit will reportedly block the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine from saving users' posts. The social media platform states that the measure is intended to stop AI companies from scraping archived comments to train their algorithms. Or at least, prevent them from doing so without paying up.

SEE ALSO: Paid subreddits reportedly on hold as Reddit focuses on search

As reported by The Verge, Reddit is preventing the Wayback Machine from archiving users' post detail pages, comments, and profiles. The Reddit homepage is still fair game, meaning that the titles of the top posts each day will still be preserved, but anything beyond that will no longer be indexed in the Internet Archive's digital library.

Reddit framed the decision as an effort to protect its users, stating that AI companies were violating its policies by scraping data from the Wayback Machine.

"Until [the Internet Archive is] able to defend their site and comply with platform policies (e.g., respecting user privacy re. deleting removed content) we're limiting some of their access to Reddit data to protect redditors," Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt told The Verge.

Yet despite such assertions, Reddit has demonstrated that it's happy to hand over users' data to AI companies provided that they pay up. In 2024, Reddit barred search engines such as Microsoft Bing and DuckDuckGo from crawling its platform. However, a $60 million deal between Reddit and Google enabled the tech giant to continue training its AI algorithms on redditors' data, as well as surface their posts in Search. Reddit made a similar $60 million deal with ChatGPT creator OpenAI as well.

"Without these agreements, we don’t have any say or knowledge of how our data is displayed and what it’s used for, which has put us in a position now of blocking folks who haven’t been willing to come to terms with how we’d like our data to be used or not used," Reddit CEO Steve Huffman told The Verge last August.

Ironically, Reddit users themselves have little say in how the company uses their public posts, as it doesn't allow them to opt out of having such data sold or used to train AI algorithms. The only remedy for redditors to prevent such use is to simply stop posting to the platform altogether, though that still doesn't address posts they've previously made.

Though concern for users' privacy may be a factor, Reddit's decision to block the Wayback Machine appears to be more obviously motivated by money. While AI companies were apparently scraping Reddit posts for free, cutting off such access will enable the social media platform to instead licence such data for a significant fee.

"The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable," Huffman told the New York Times in 2023. "But we don't need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free."

Reddit has been fighting to reduce its financial losses in recent years, resulting in widely unpopular changes such as charging developers for access to its application programming interface (API), removing the ability to opt out of ad personalisation, and the planned introduction of paid subreddits. Unfortunately, there's still a long way to go before Reddit claws itself out of the red. The self-professed "heart of the internet" reported a whopping net loss of $484.3 million last year — more than five times its $90.8 million net loss in 2023.

Moon phase today: What the moon will look like on August 12, 2025

Mashable - Tue, 08/12/2025 - 06:00

The moon is still big and bright in our skies following the full moon, but you'll notice that each night it's a little darker on the right-hand side (left if you're in the Southern Hemisphere). This is because of the lunar cycle.

The lunar cycle is a series of eight unique phases of the moon's visibility. The whole cycle takes about 29.5 days, according to NASA, and these different phases happen as the Sun lights up different parts of the moon whilst it orbits Earth.

So, what's happening with the moon tonight, Aug. 12?

What is today’s moon phase?

As of Tuesday, Aug. 12, the moon phase is Waning Gibbous, and it is 88% lit up to us on Earth, according to NASA's Daily Moon Observation.

There's a lot to see on the moon tonight, and it's also the start of the peak of the Perseids Meteor Shower. The moonlight may dim some of the meteors, but some should still cut through the light.

Alongside this, with no visual aids on the moon, you can spot the Kepler Crater, Mare Serenitatis, and the Mare Vaporum. Add a telescope and you'll see the Apollo 16, the Schiller Crater, and the Caucasus Mountains, a 323-mile-long mountain range.

When is the next full moon?

The next full moon will be on Sept. 7. The last full moon was on Aug. 9.

What are moon phases?

According to NASA, moon phases are caused by the 29.5-day cycle of the moon’s orbit, which changes the angles between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Moon phases are how the moon looks from Earth as it goes around us. We always see the same side of the moon, but how much of it is lit up by the Sun changes depending on where it is in its orbit. This is how we get full moons, half moons, and moons that appear completely invisible. There are eight main moon phases, and they follow a repeating cycle:

New Moon - The moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).

Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

First Quarter - Half of the moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-moon.

Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it’s not quite full yet.

Full Moon - The whole face of the moon is illuminated and fully visible.

Waning Gibbous - The moon starts losing light on the right side.

Last Quarter (or Third Quarter) - Another half-moon, but now the left side is lit.

Waning Crescent - A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before going dark again.

The best cheap VPN in August 2025

Mashable - Tue, 08/12/2025 - 06:00

The best VPNs aren't always the most expensive. Some leading VPNs are actually really affordable, which is great news for anyone looking to secure cheap online security, data protection, and increased streaming options.

You have come to the right place if you're looking for a premium VPN with advanced features, without the big price tag. We've lined up some great value options for absolutely everyone, and there is no need to compromise on security, connection speed, customer support, or anything else.

But first, there are a few things we need to cover.

What is a VPN?

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) provide valuable protection for your data and identity when you're navigating the online world. How do they do this? VPNs offer online privacy and anonymity by creating a private network that hides your real IP address and makes all of your information unreadable.

All of your activity is untraceable and secure, because your online traffic passes through an encrypted tunnel. Everything inside the tunnel is protected against online threats like viruses, hackers, and malware. VPNs are primarily designed to provide online security, but there is another reason that millions of people use these services.

SEE ALSO: The best VPNs for your iPhone

VPNs can also be used to stream movies and shows from around the world, and the process is actually really simple. We've already mentioned how VPNs provide anonymity by hiding your real IP address. Well, this technique can also be used to manipulate the streaming market. By hiding your real IP address and connecting you to a server in another location, you can trick your favourite streaming sites into thinking that you are based in a different country. This provides access to all the extra content that would normally be restricted in your location.

Should you use free VPNs?

The question that everyone wants an answer to is whether you actually need to pay for a VPN. There are plenty of free VPNs out there, but do these offer the features you need to browse, shop, and stream securely? Unfortunately, there is often a catch with free versions (usually in the form of a limitation on your data usage or connection speed).

Occasional users will probably be satisfied with a free VPN, but if you're going to be streaming or downloading on a regular basis, you should look elsewhere. The only exception to this rule is a free trial. These come without limitations, but obviously don't tend to last for a long time.

The conclusion is that the best option for securing your data and streaming more content from around the world is with a paid subscription. The sad fact is that you'll have to pay to gain access to advanced security features without limitations on your usage. It's not all bad news though, because there are plenty of cheap plans out there, especially if you're willing to commit to a lengthy contract.

What should you consider before subscribing to a VPN?

The process of actually selecting a VPN can be seriously tricky, especially if you don't know what to consider. Most of the best VPNs offer many of the same features with similar packages, so it's important to know what matters.

To make your life a little bit easier, we have shortlisted a few things to consider before making any sort of decision:

  • Customer support — VPNs can be difficult to understand if you're not an experienced user, and even if you are, problems can occur. Whether you're a total beginner or not, customer support is key for dealing with any potential issues that might arise. You should also consider whether customer support is offered by phone, email, or web chat.

  • Jurisdiction — It's a good idea to look for VPNs based in the British Virgin Islands, Panama, Switzerland, and other privacy-friendly countries. VPNs based in countries that fall under the jurisdiction of the intelligence-sharing alliances should be avoided: the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, France, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Spain. VPNs in these countries can be forced by authorities to collect and hand over user data.

  • Network size and location — The best VPNs offer a large network of geographically diverse servers. The more servers (and server locations) offered by a VPN, the more likely you are to find a reliable and fast connection. This is also particularly important for streaming, as you should always be able to connect to a server in the country with the content you want to watch.

  • Trustworthiness — We recommend finding an experienced provider with a strong track record and a clear privacy policy. It's important that your VPN of choice guarantees your data won't be logged or collected. If it isn't obvious what happens to your data, you should steer clear.

Make sure you carefully consider these features before deciding on the VPN that suits you and your lifestyle. Once you have narrowed down your options, you can begin the process of finding the best deals.

What is the best VPN?

We're sorry to burst your bubble, but there isn't one VPN that stands above all the rest. The best VPN for you really comes down to your own set of personal preferences. Once you find a few options that tick your boxes, you need to consider the best deals.

We have reached out to partners in order to provide you with market-leading prices on VPN subscriptions, with performance and security in mind. All of these VPN services have been handpicked not only because of the prices and deals on offer, but because they all offer the most important features to protect your online data and identity.

There are also plenty of services to consider on this list if your priority is unlocking streaming sites like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+. Online security should always be the priority, but we know that many subscribers use these services to unlock more content from around the world. We get it, and we're here to help.

These are the best deals on cheap VPNs in 2025.

The Jurassic Park franchise roars on in 2025 with Jurassic World Rebirth — one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. Besides a new star-studded cast, we're most excited about the return of Jurassic Park's original screenwriter, David Koepp.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One), it stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as a group of people who should know better than to mess with dinosaurs so casually. Nevertheless, they seek out the beasts, and all chaos ensues.

Jurassic World Rebirth landed in theaters July 2, but if you missed it on the big screen, you can officially watch it at home. Here's everything you need to know.

What is Jurassic World Rebirth about?

Set five years after Jurassic World: Dominion, Rebirth follows an extraction crew (Johansson, Bailey, Ali, and Friend) on an expedition to the original research facility for Jurassic Park. Their mission? To procure DNA from the dinosaurs deemed "too dangerous for the park" for a medical advancement worth trillions.

Check out the official trailer below.

Is Jurassic World Rebirth worth watching?

The last two Jurassic Park movies — Fallen Kingdom and Dominion — were loathed by critics, including Mashable's own, despite making over a billion dollars. So, the bar is set pretty low.

For what it's worth, though, Mashable film critic Kristy Puchko calls Jurassic World Rebirth "the best of the new batch of movies."

"In the end, Jurassic World Rebirth is a rocky ride. Some bits are absolutely exhilarating, while others feel like a chore. But unlike the humans in this franchise, the humans of our world just cannot tire of these incredible beasts, happy to shell out ticket money to get as close as we might to their enormous majesty. And this film, including its hilariously calamitous opening with its requisite kill, will deliver, feeding both all our yearning for excitement and our need for escapism," she writes in her review, adding, "It’s not better than the original, but it’s the closest we’ve come."

Like most of the other Jurassic Park movies (aside from the original), it has a relatively low critic score overall on Rotten Tomatoes, with a solid 70+ audience score. Translation: People can't get enough of these on-screen beasts.

Jurassic World Rebirth is available as of Aug. 5 to buy or rent at digital-on-demand retailers. Just be aware that with rentals, you'll only get 30 days to watch the film and just 48 hours to finish it once you start. If you choose to buy it instead, then it's yours to keep with no watch limits.

Here are some quick links to rent or purchase the film:

Stream it on Peacock

As a Universal Pictures film, we know that Jurassic World Rebirth will eventually make its streaming debut on Peacock. The digital-to-streaming arc of other recent Universal films (Drop, Wicked, The Woman in the Yard) was between two and three months. So, while we don't know the exact streaming date yet, we expect Rebirth to make its Peacock debut sometime in late mid-to-late October. We'll keep you updated.

Don't have a Peacock subscription? You can sign up for as low as $10.99 per month with ads or $16.99 per month without (thanks to a recent price hike). Before you get ahead of yourself, though, be sure to check out the best ways to save some money on a subscription below.
