Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

What's the best Wordle starting word?

The best Wordle starting word is the one that speaks to you. But if you prefer to be strategic in your approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles was originally available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it, but it was later taken down, with the website's creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times. The NYT's latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication's sports coverage. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Will Bluesky train gen AI with your posts? The X rival addressed concerns.

Mashable - Sat, 11/16/2024 - 00:39

Bluesky, the X competitor that's attracted over three million followers since the U.S. presidential election, doesn't train generative AI models on user data.

In a post on Friday, Bluesky said, "we do not use any of your content to train generative AI, and have no intention of doing so." In a follow up post, it explained that it uses AI to assist in content moderation and in the Discover algorithmic feed, before adding "None of these are Gen AI systems trained on user content."

Bluesky uses AI internally to assist in content moderation, which helps us triage posts and shield human moderators from harmful content. We also use AI in the Discover algorithmic feed to serve you posts that we think you’d like. None of these are Gen AI systems trained on user content.

— Bluesky (@bsky.app) November 15, 2024 at 12:17 PM

The announcement coincided with major changes on X and an influx of new users to Bluesky. Recently X changed how its block function worked and modified its privacy policy, allowing its LLM Grok to train on user data. This, plus Elon Musk's vocal support of President Trump appears to have driven an exodus from X — an many are turning to Bluesky.

SEE ALSO: Bluesky hits #1 on the App Store as users continue to flee Elon Musk's X

Bluesky currently has over 17 million users, jumping up from 9 million users as of September. Users have grown to mistrust companies like X, Meta, and Google for using their data to train generative AI models without ways of opting out. Since Bluesky has become perceived as the less toxic version of X, the company's explicit statement about its user data policies is welcome news for users sick of their data being exploited.

That said, Bluesky doesn't currently have any generative AI features, so it's easy for the app to say it isn't training anything. As we know from X's frequent policy updates, all that could change. Bluesky's Terms of Service, which was linked in the post doesn't have any explicit mention of AI model training, so the downside is that a new clause could easily appear. In other words, never say never, but Bluesky users are safe for now.

Yes, the Ninja Slushi sold out at Best Buy in minutes — but it's in stock elsewhere

Mashable - Fri, 11/15/2024 - 22:15

UPDATE: Nov. 15, 2024, 4:15 p.m. EST The Slushi was restocked at Best Buy as a Best Buy Drop at 11 a.m. and sold out within minutes. However, it's still in stock at Ninja's website and Macy's, where you can buy it for $299.99.

At 11 a.m. ET on Nov. 15, Best Buy restocked the Ninja Slushi as a Best Buy Drop (Drops is a tab in the Best Buy mobile app that features a running list of items dropping that week, which are often high-profile items like the Slushi, or special deals). By about 11:03 a.m., the daunting "inventory claimed" bar was at 100 percent — one of the fastest Drop sellouts we've ever seen.

The speed at which people moved to get their hands on the Slushi in those three minutes paints the picture that the Slushi is impossible to find in stock elsewhere. But this isn't the case at all: As of Nov. 15, the Ninja Slushi is in stock at Ninja's website, as well as at Macy's.

SEE ALSO: When do Black Friday sales start? Early holiday deals are already here.

Given the number of times the Ninja Slushi has actually sold out since it came out in July, it wouldn't be surprising for the Slushi stock at both of these places to dwindle over the next few days. And coming from someone who has been using the Slushi on a regular basis since the summer, I'm here to let you know that you won't regret hitting "add to cart" immediately. You'll be far too distracted by the bliss of having Slushi opportunities at your fingertips whenever you want.

Hear me out: Little treats are more crucial than ever in Times Like These (whatever that means to you). But as we know all too well, the whole "it gets dark at 5 p.m. now" thing makes leaving the house the last thing on Earth that we want to do, even if a fun drink or milkshake is waiting on the other side.

The Ninja Slushi is literally a little treat machine, and the mere variety of its menu is the thing I love most about it. The five settings on the Ninja Slushi are slush, spiked slush, frappé, milkshake, and frozen juice, so the possibilities are pretty endless. You can whip up a frozen version of the orange juice you drink every morning or the protein drink you have after your workouts, recreate a fancy drink you got on vacation that one time, bring to life a collection of ingredients that you think would go well together, or literally just pour in soda and make a Coke slushie. The Slushi takes around an hour to take stuff from liquid to frozen, but it can then keep your mix at that consistency for several hours afterward.

SEE ALSO: TikTok is in love with the Ninja Creami, but am I?

Yes, you can pour soda, juice, or wine directly into the Slushi with no other ingredients. The fine print there is that sugar is the main fuel that makes the Slushi slush — so slushing a diet soda or seltzer with no sugar requires having simple syrup or agave on hand. No, the Slushi can't make ice cream exactly like the Ninja Creami, though the milkshake setting is kind of close. Compared to the Creami that is sitting right beside the Slushi on my counter, the Slushi is much quieter and requires much less prep work.

Admittedly, my Slushi usage slowed down for a hot second after prime frozen margarita weather waned off — but usage picked right back up when all of the chilly weather cozy concoction recipes started flowing. Most recently, my friend and I made frozen apple cider mimosas, and next up is a sugar cookie martini. For what it's worth, most frozen dessert-like recipes are pretty much possible with the Ninja Creami. It's on sale at Best Buy for $219.99 versus the Slushi's $299.99, so that's an option as well.

Google is reportedly developing a ‘fake’ email feature to help you avoid spam

Mashable - Fri, 11/15/2024 - 19:29

It seems Google is about to launch an email feature for users, similar to one Apple already provides via iCloud.

According to a new report from Android Authority, a new feature called Shielded Email has suddenly appeared in the Google Autofill settings menu.

Tapping on the option currently just forwards users to an empty Google account page. However, looking into the latest Google Play Services 24.45.33 update code unveils exactly what Shielded Email will do if Google decides to officially launch it.

What is Shielded Email?

Shielded Email will provide Google users with a service similar to Apple iCloud's Hide My Email.

Basically, the feature allows users to automatically create a randomly generated email alias when they need to sign up for an email list or website. With so many online platforms requiring email addresses nowadays, users have become inundated with spam and other privacy concerns. A feature like Shielded Email lets users sign up for online services, receive and reply to emails — all without revealing their main email address.

The email aliases are also helpful in tracking exactly which signup led to a user's email address being sold to third-parties and spammers.

Apple's Hide My Email requires a paid subscription to iCloud+. It’s unclear whether Google’s Shielded Email will require a paid subscription when it eventually rolls out.
