It's finally here: a built-in remote for your e-reader. Your Kobo e-reader that is.

In early October, Kobo, the maker of our favorite e-readers including the Clara Colour and Libra Colour, announced that it was launching a remote, compatible with all of its e-readers. The new remote's launch date was pushed back from Nov. 4 to Dec. 2, and now it's finally here.

The Kobo Remote pairs with Kobo e-readers via Bluetooth, allowing users to turn the page with the remote rather than on the e-reader. It has an ergonomic design so your head doesn't get stuck in an uncomfortable cramp during your reading marathon. The remote retails for $29.99 and comes in either black or white.

This accessory comes with the rising popularity of remote page turners on TikTok. Kobo even beat e-reader giant Amazon to the punch, as there's no native remote sold for Kindles. The most popular options are two piece remotes that require a piece that clips onto e-readers and taps the screen. The Kobo Remote is a single piece, leaving your screen totally unobstructed.

The Kobo Remote is available at just the right time. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Kobo Libra Colour, our favorite color e-reader, is still on sale. You can grab the color e-reader that comes with coveted page-turning buttons for just $199.99, saving you $30. Those $30 you're saving can go straight toward the remote, so you're basically getting it for free.

Shop the Kobo Remote and the discounted Kobo Libra Colour at Kobo now.

This programming language is quitting GitHub

How-To Geek - Tue, 12/02/2025 - 19:44

The Zig Programming Language is officially quitting GitHub and moving its main repository over to Codeberg. The reasoning is a collapse in engineering quality and an aggressive push toward artificial intelligence tools. It is the most direct shot at Copilot from a developer I've seen in some time.

Anthropic launches Claude for Nonprofits for Giving Tuesday

Mashable - Tue, 12/02/2025 - 19:40

AI developer Anthropic is honoring this Giving Tuesday with new trainings and features for its popular chatbot, Claude, that are specifically designed for the needs of nonprofits.

The Claude for Nonprofits package provides nonprofit organizations with discounted Claude access (up to 75 percent off); integrations with nonprofit tools like Blackbaud, Candid, and Benevity; as well as free use case guides and an AI Fluency for Nonprofits training course for AI beginners.

The company explains that its upgraded Claude Sonnet 4.5, and advanced coding model, is also trained for grant writing and program analysis. It's safety-forward Haiku 4.5, meanwhile, speeds up processing at reduced costs. Both are available to Claude for Nonprofits users. Claude can also connect to Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Asana, Slack, and Box.

SEE ALSO: OpenAI denies allegations in teen death lawsuit

AI adoption across the nonprofit sector has been scattered, due in part to continued skepticism about the safety, privacy, and reliability of generative AI —and of the very nature of the sector's work. Many organizations are hard pressed to devote resources and time to the kind of training and infrastructure needed to ethically integrate the technology amid threatened funding streams, while others see its use as antithetical to their mission. Still, recent data shows widespread interest, but preparedness is low and adoption is slow. Of the AI developers and tech funders that have tried, few have been able to fully fill those gaps.

Claude for Nonprofits is thus built to support a nonprofit's tech infrastructure needs. "Nonprofits tackle some of society’s most difficult problems, often with limited resources," wrote Anthropic. "From our partners, we know AI helps most when it fits into existing workflows, upholds the privacy their communities expect, and is affordable." The developer has also partnered with nonprofit consulting organizations to provide tailored support to organizations.

According to Anthropic, Claude is already used by organizations like the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the YMCA, and the Epilepsy Foundation — the IRC also recently announced its own, in-house chatbot designed specifically to provide emergency assistance and support to refugee populations in the U.S. Claude for Nonprofits will be piloted among a cohort of 60 organizations who receive grants from funders like the Constellation Fund, Robin Hood, and Tipping Point Community.

All the states Pornhub is blocked in now

Mashable - Tue, 12/02/2025 - 19:14

UPDATE: Dec. 2, 2025, 1:11 p.m. EST This article has been updated given the enactment of Missouri's age-verification law.

The explicit tube site Pornhub is now blocked in 23 U.S. states.

This is due to age-verification laws. These laws vary state by state, but typically require visitors of a site with over a third of explicit content to submit a government ID or other form of age authentication. Louisiana was the first state to enact such a bill a couple of years ago, and now others have followed suit. In June, the Supreme Court deemed Texas's age-verification law constitutional, setting a precedent for such bills that come before and after.

SEE ALSO: Porn censorship is going to destroy the entire internet

According to one preliminary study, age verification won't work to keep minors off porn sites. This is because of software like VPNs that allow someone to appear to be in a different location, and because of non-compliant websites. (The Florida attorney general is suing foreign-based porn sites for not instituting age verification.) Yet, these laws keep getting passed — and are encroaching on non-explicit websites as well, experts told Mashable.

While Pornhub is not blocked in Louisiana, it is blocked in these states, a Pornhub representative confirmed to Mashable:

  • Alabama

  • Arizona

  • Arkansas

  • Florida

  • Georgia

  • Idaho

  • Indiana

  • Kansas

  • Kentucky

  • Mississippi

  • Missouri

  • Montana

  • Nebraska

  • North Carolina

  • North Dakota

  • Oklahoma

  • South Carolina

  • South Dakota

  • Tennessee

  • Texas

  • Utah

  • Virginia

  • Wyoming

Pornhub isn't blocked in Ohio despite the state's age-verification law, due to a clause stating that establishing age verification methods doesn't apply to a provider of an interactive computer service (Aylo considers itself one).

In Louisiana, where users must submit ID to view Pornhub, the site has seen traffic decline by around 80 percent, Aylo (Pornhub's parent company) told Mashable.

"These people did not stop looking for porn. They just migrated to darker corners of the internet that don't ask users to verify age, that don't follow the law, that don't take user safety seriously, and that often don't even moderate content. In practice, the laws have just made the internet more dangerous for adults and children," Aylo stated when asked for comment by Mashable back in January.

In a statement to Mashable, Aylo continued:

First, to be clear, Aylo has publicly supported age verification of users for years, but we believe that any law to this effect must preserve user safety and privacy, and must effectively protect children from accessing content intended for adults.

Unfortunately, the way many jurisdictions worldwide have chosen to implement age verification is ineffective, haphazard, and dangerous. Any regulations that require hundreds of thousands of adult sites to collect significant amounts of highly sensitive personal information is putting user safety in jeopardy. Moreover, as experience has demonstrated, unless properly enforced, users will simply access non-compliant sites or find other methods of evading these laws.

Industry experts say that, in addition to not working for their intended purpose, age verification laws also raise concerns about privacy protection and safety since websites now have to host (even more of) people's personal information. It will be harder to be anonymous online, which experts warn is dangerous to free speech. Adult industry experts Mashable spoke to in an explainer on age-verification laws advocated for device-level filters, as did Aylo in its statement.

SEE ALSO: YouTube will begin using AI for age verification next week

Some in the adult industry worry about what Trump's second presidential term will bring due to the conservative policy outline Project 2025 and its measures to ban porn. One of Project 2025's authors, Russell Vought, was caught on a secret recording stating that age-verification laws are the "back door" to a broader porn ban.

The iPad Pro with M5 chip is still live post-Cyber Monday, saving $100 on the latest iPad

Mashable - Tue, 12/02/2025 - 18:59

SAVE $100: As of Dec. 2, you can still save on the Apple iPad Pro, 11-inch (M5, 256GB, WiFi) even post Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Get latest Apple tablet for just $899.99.

Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Apple iPad Pro, 11-inch (M5, 256GB, WiFi) $899.99 at Amazon
$999 Save $99.01   Get Deal

Now that Black Friday and Cyber Monday have officially come and gone, our attention is turning to the deals that are still making an appearance. Deals are moving fast, and there's no way to be certain if they're going to hang around and for how long. Basically, if you see a deal you like, buy it quick. One of the deals we're eyeing is on the latest iPad Pro, which got the M5 chip treatment. It received one of its first discounts ever during Black Friday and Cyber Monday and it's somehow sticking around.

As of Dec. 2, find the Apple iPad Pro, 11-inch (M5, 256GB, WiFi) for just $899.99, saving you $99.01 off of its $999 price tag. That's 10% off, and basically the lowest price ever on the device. Technically the device's lowest price ever is $899, so you're just paying $0.99 more.

The Apple iPad Pro with M5 chip is the most advanced tablet yet. The M5 chip takes the iPad to new levels, making it an ideal candidate for professionals looking to edit photos and video, illustrate, or work in graphic design programs. It has a long battery life too boot, and one of the highest Geekbench 6 scores we've seen, north of 16,200.

Get the iPad Pro for just $899.99 at Amazon while the deal is still live.

Cyber Monday Apple steal still available: The 2025 M5 MacBook Pro is $8 cheaper than the slower M4 Pro

Mashable - Tue, 12/02/2025 - 18:58

SAVE $250: As of Dec. 2, the 2025 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Chip (512GB SSD) is still on sale for $1,349 at Amazon, a record-low price drop from its usual $1,599.

Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Apple MacBook Pro, 14-inch (M5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) $1,349 at Amazon
$1,599 Save $250   Get Deal

Apple released two new M5-powered devices in October — the M5 iPad Pro and the M5 MacBook Pro — but only the latter got Black Friday treatment that's worth talking about. The day after Cyber Monday, Amazon still has the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro at its record-low pricing of $1,349 for the 512GB model in silver or space black. That's a $250 drop from its $1,599 MSRP, and one of our favorite leftover Cyber Monday Apple deals.

SEE ALSO: Cyber Monday 2025: Live updates on deals still live from Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, Walmart, and more

A 16% discount doesn't exactly sound huge on its face in the grand scheme of Black Friday. But a 16% discount on a MacBook that hasn't even been out for two months? Considering that M5 iPad Pro discounts maxed out at 10% off, we'll definitely take Amazon's MacBook offering here.

So why choose the 2025 M5 MacBook over the 2024 M4? For starters, opting for the slower 2024 M4 right now wouldn't save you any money — the model with 16GB Unified Memory and 512 GB SSD (same specs as the M5 we're highlighting here) is on sale at Amazon for $1,357.77. By snatching up the M5 while it's technically a few dollars cheaper, you're bringing home up to 20 percent faster computing, zippier Cyberpunk-approved graphics handling, and new Neural Accelerators for all sorts of improvements upon AI performance. "At this point, Apple is just showing off," Mashable Tech Editor Timothy Beck Werth noted when testing the M5 MacBook Pro.

Cyber Monday has come and gone, but there are still plenty of deals to be had, especially if you're looking for some discounted electronics. That goes for headphones as well, so if you want something to be able to listen to over the holidays while traveling, need a great gift for someone, or just feel like investing in some new cans, there's something left for you. We've selected one particularly great candidate, and you can get it right now.

As of Dec. 2, get the Bose New QuietComfort Ultra headphones for $399, down from their usual price of $449. That's $50 off and a discount of 11%.

SEE ALSO: Streaming just got cheaper: Cyber Monday deals still live on Paramount+, Mubi, Fox One, Peacock

These are the upgraded version of the previous Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones, with a few significant changes: better battery life, new immersive audio Cinema Mode, adjustable ANC, wired lossless playback, and more. They're more expensive as well, of course, but this discount makes them much more palatable.

Mashable's Bethany Allard took these headphones for a spin and praised them for their comfort, calling them "the most comfortable headphones on the market". She also appreciated their adjustable active noise cancellation, shiny metal accent, and passive playback and USB-C playback options.

"If you're buying into the line for the first time, the blend of comfort, noise cancellation, and sound is hard to beat, especially if you're keen on all-day wear," Allard wrote.

If you're ready to go ahead and lock in a pair for yourself, now's a good time to do so while the Cyber Monday sale is still live.

Galaxy Z TriFold: Specs, features, price

Mashable - Tue, 12/02/2025 - 18:45

Can't choose between a new smartphone or a new tablet? Well, Samsung has made your decision pretty easy then by saying: Why not both with the new Galaxy Z TriFold?

Samsung finally made its trifold phone official. That's right, a trifold phone that's called the TriFold because it has three display panels with two hinges that fold out into a 10-inch display. That's a tablet-sized screen, the largest ever on a Galaxy phone, wrapped into a foldable smartphone.

SEE ALSO: Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold vs Apple foldable iPhone: Specs and rumors

While the big Dynamic 2X AMOLED display, with its 2160 x 1584 resolution and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, works as one large singular screen, the device can also be configured to work as if it's three 6.5-inch smartphones. Users can simultaneously run three different portrait-sized apps on each panel side-by-side. With that said, users can drag and drop files across all three screens as the TriFold still performs as a single device.

When folded, Samsung fans will be able to use the TriFold’s outer screen, with its 6.5-inch 2520 x 1080 resolution display just like a non-foldable smartphone.

With a 200 MP camera and powered by the customized Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy, the Galaxy Z TriFold still manages to be fairly thin when folded out, ranging from 4.2mm to 3.9mm in thickness at its thinnest point. When folded, the TriFold does balloon in size, measuring in at 12.9mm thick.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is also the first smartphone that can run Samsung DeX, which basically enables users to turn their mobile device into a desktop PC-like experience.

Unlike many other unique smartphones that never get released in the United States, Samsung is bringing the Galaxy Z TriFold to the U.S. in the first quarter of 2026.

The only real question left about the Galaxy Z TriFold is how much it'll cost for Americans. Samsung has not yet shared a price for the TriFold when it launches in the U.S. next year. However, the TriFold will be in stores much sooner in South Korea. When it goes on sale there on December 12, 2025, consumers will be paying roughly $2,500 for the foldable device.

It's unclear if Samsung will keep that same pricing structure for the U.S. market, but with the TriFold hitting U.S. shelves sometime over the next few months, we'll soon find out.

Forget heart rate and workouts, this is the best reason to buy a smartwatch

I was not eager to make mobile payments by tapping my phone against a terminal, but once I started, I quickly stopped reaching for my wallet. Now I no longer reach for my phone, either. There’s an even faster way to pay that has led me to increasingly keep my phone in my pocket.

Sorry to say but Cyber Monday is officially over and many of the great deals vanished when the clocked struck midnight. But if you're still looking for great deals, The Home Depot set their own calendar this year and the retailer's sale is still live today. Aside from that, there are a few great deals lingering about and one of the highlights is this epic deal on Sony headphones.

As of Dec. 2, the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones are still on sale at Amazon for $248, marked down from the list price of $399.99. That's a massive 38% discount that takes $151.99 off the price. It also matches the lowest we've ever seen and the Cyber Monday sale price.

Not long ago, Sony dropped the new XM6 headphones and yes, they're amazing. The only hitch is the price tag of the XM6 which currently sits at $398 thanks to the Amazon sale. Instead, you might consider the slightly older but definitely still awesome Sony XM5 headphones, and those are on sale for $248. That means you're savings about $150 by going with the older model.

Mashable lead shopping reporter Bethany Allard compared the new XM6 to the XM5 and wrote, "The XM6 headphones bring some updates in the form over improved sound and folding ear cups, but nothing too major over the past generation."

One of the only things you're missing out on with opting for the XM5 headphones is earcups that don't fold up. They also have a slightly less warmer sound compared to the XM6 headphones, according to Allard's experience.

The battery life on the XM5 is identical to that of the XM6, as is the charging time. They also weigh a bit less. Allard mentioned she didn't notice a major difference in noise-cancellation ability with the older mode, so you should be set in that respect.

Overall, this still-live Cyber Monday price on the Sony XM5 headphones is a great opportunity to snag excellent headphones at the lowest price we've ever seen. Since Cyber Monday is technically over, we recommend jumping on this deal soon since it might disappear in a hurry.

How progress bars lie (and why downloads get stuck at 99%)

How-To Geek - Tue, 12/02/2025 - 18:00

Progress bars are everywhere, but we hardly ever give them a second thought. They have a little bit of mystery to them though. You might have noticed that downloads or file transfers sometimes get stuck at 99%. At times, they jump or stall. Sometimes they even fail at 99%. It happens because progress bars always lie, a little bit.

All the states and countries that have age-verification laws (so far)

Mashable - Tue, 12/02/2025 - 17:50

Age-verification laws have swept the world in recent years. These rules, also known as age assurance or age checks, often require websites that contain a certain (or any) amount of explicit content to confirm that users are over 18.

But it's not just checking a "yes or no" box anymore. Many of these laws require personal data, such as a photo of a government ID or a facial recognition scan, to access parts of the internet.

SEE ALSO: Porn censorship is going to destroy the entire internet

While the purported aim of these laws is to keep minors from seeing porn, experts have told Mashable for years that age verification doesn't work for that intended purpose. This is because website companies based in other countries may not comply, or citizens may attempt to circumvent these laws using VPNs (or, in the case of the UK's Online Safety Act, by using images of video game characters). Early research out of NYU has suggested that age verification doesn't work, as well.

Experts also state the digital privacy and security issues that could arise from submitting so much personal information to various websites. One is identity theft, should bad actors obtain access to this data, such as through a phishing scam pretending to be a verification system for a porn site. Another is a lack of access to parts of the internet entirely if someone doesn't have an ID, which could widen the digital divide.

Yet, these laws are spreading throughout the world. Here's a breakdown of the states and countries with age verification laws (so far).

United States

The United States is distinct in that age-verification laws have been implemented on a state-by-state basis, as opposed to a federal one. While you're not able to access Pornhub in Virginia, for instance, you can drive up to Maryland and browse all you'd like.

Since Louisiana enacted its age verification law in 2023, similar bills have popped up across the country. Then, in 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that these laws are constitutional, essentially ensuring that more states will implement them as well, experts told Mashable at the time.

States with enacted age verification laws as of this publication, according to the adult industry trade organization the Free Speech Coalition, are:

  • Alabama

  • Arizona

  • Arkansas

  • Florida

  • Georgia

  • Idaho

  • Indiana

  • Kansas

  • Kentucky

  • Louisiana

  • Mississippi

  • Missouri

  • Montana

  • Nebraska

  • North Carolina

  • North Dakota

  • Ohio

  • Oklahoma

  • South Carolina

  • South Dakota

  • Tennessee

  • Texas

  • Utah

  • Virginia

  • Wyoming

United Kingdom

The Online Safety Act, which contains the UK's age-verification clause, went into effect in July 2025. Sites and apps must use one of several methods to assure someone's age, such as taking their banking information, matching a photo with an ID, or scanning their face.

The UK's communication regulatory agency, Ofcom, stated that it will fine up to  £18 million or 10 percent of qualifying worldwide revenue (whichever is greater) for sites that don't comply. Since then, "SFW" sites, from dating apps to Spotify and YouTube, have or will implement age checks in the region (and others). Controversial sites 4chan and Kiwi Farms have sued Ofcom, stating they shouldn't need to comply as they operate outside the UK.

France

France's age verification law, which requires explicit sites to have a third-party system to confirm users' ages, went into effect in June 2025. It also must be "double-blind," meaning the porn site can't know the visitors' age, while the verification system can't know the site the visitor is looking at.

Soon after it was enacted, though, the law was briefly suspended until it was deemed legal by EU law. But in July, France's highest court — the Council of State — annulled the suspension. This caused back and forth with Pornhub, which initially blocked itself in the country, then reinstated itself during that period, only to block itself again after the law's suspension was revoked.

Italy

Starting November 12, Italy will enact age verification for pornographic sites. Last Friday, Italy's communications agency, AGCOM, released a list of 45 websites that must implement age verification systems to continue functioning in the country, or receive a warning and fines up to 250,000 Euros. The list includes Pornhub and OnlyFans

AGCOM stated on its website that a certified independent third party must verify users' ages, doing so in two steps (identification and authentication of the identified person) — and it has to happen every session. When dealing with an app, a separate app must age-verify like a digital ID wallet app.

Australia

This law looks a little different than that of other countries, but its purpose is the same. Australia's age-verification law states that at the end of this year, people will have to verify their ages when logged into their Google or Microsoft accounts and using those search engines. These engines must have tools or settings like "safe search," where explicit content must be filtered out entirely. The highest safety setting must be the default for account holders for whom the age assurance system indicates are likely children.

If age assurance can't be done, explicit material must be blurred.

China

Pornography is currently illegal in China, so its age-verification systems also look different. The country has strict age restrictions for video games, livestreaming and video-sharing platforms, payment processors, and social media. Users must undergo Real Name Verification, which requires providing their name and ID number to access these services. Depending on the app, users may have to give more information too, such as their phone number, bank account, and a facial recognition scan.

This list will likely grow longer, and Mashable will update it when it does. Ofcom's group director for online safety, Oliver Griffiths, told Mashable back in June that age verification for porn sites was a "global issue" and sought to instill global norms. It seems that's well on the way.

UPDATE: Dec. 2, 2025, 11:49 a.m. EST The U.S. list has been updated to add Missouri.

Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold vs Apple foldable iPhone: Specs and rumors

Mashable - Tue, 12/02/2025 - 17:49

Samsung has a new recruit in the foldable trenches, while Apple is set to join them soon.

On Monday, Samsung announced the Galaxy Z TriFold, an oft-rumored foldable phone with two hinges and a gigantic inner display. It's coming to the U.S. in early 2026, and people are excited. However, Apple is also said to be working on a foldable iPhone, potentially set for launch in 2026, as well.

With that in mind, let's take what we know about both devices and compare them.

It's worth mentioning that only one of these devices has been officially announced. Therefore, we only have real specs for Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold right now. Here's how they shake out:

  • 10-inch main display with 2160x1584 resolution and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate

  • 6.5-inch cover display with 2520x1080 resolution and 120Z adaptive refresh rate

  • Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset

  • 16GB RAM

  • 512GB/1TB storage

  • 5,600mAh battery

  • Three rear cameras: 200MP wide, 12MP ultra-wide, 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom

In case you haven't been following the news, the main selling point of Samsung's new device is that it folds twice. It has two hinges that, when unfolded, open up a gargantuan 10-inch display with a 4K-ish resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It's also got a 6.5-inch outer display so you can use it like a regular phone and put it in your pockets, similar to how the single-hinged Galaxy Z Fold 7 works.

Like I said, we unfortunately don't have nearly as much firm information about the rumored iPhone Fold right now. The latest reports suggest that Apple has mastered some kind of "creaseless" design, which would be huge. Recent foldables, such as the ones from Samsung, have made great strides in reducing the visibility of the crease in the unfolded display, but if Apple could truly eliminate that, it would really be onto something. To be clear, this is expected to be a single-hinged device, like most foldables. Some reports have suggested that it will have a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display, making it significantly smaller than the Galaxy Z TriFold.

As for cameras, the Galaxy Z TriFold has a fairly standard set of lenses, relative to other Samsung flagships. You get three on the back and one on the front, with highlights including a 200MP main shooter and a telephoto lens on the back. We don't know the exact specs for the iPhone Fold's cameras yet, but it's thought to have four lenses just like the Samsung phone. However, they'll be arranged differently; there will be two on the back and, for reasons that will surely become clear when the device is actually shown, two on the front.

Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold vs. Apple iPhone Fold: Everything else we know, or don't know

Sadly, that's about all we have on both phones in terms of hard information. Samsung's device doesn't have a firm U.S. release date or price yet. One recent report suggested the iPhone Fold could cost as much as $2,399, which would be a lot, even for a foldable.

One thing we do know about Samsung's foldable is that it's thin, like the other phones Samsung launched in 2025. Samsung says it measures in at just 4.2mm of thickness when unfolded. One recent report said the iPhone Fold will resemble two iPhone Airs strapped together, so expect that device to be thin, as well.

If you're excited about the Galaxy Z TriFold, you have only a few months of waiting left. If you're excited about the iPhone Fold, well...patience is a virtue.
