SEE ALSO: Mahjong, Sudoku, free crossword, and more: Play games on Mashable SEE ALSO: NYT Connections today: Hints and answers for June 18 Where did Wordle come from?Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once.
Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.
What's the best Wordle starting word? The best Wordle starting word is the one that speaks to you. But if you prefer to be strategic in your approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.
What happened to the Wordle archive? The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles was originally available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it, but it was later taken down, with the website's creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times. However, the New York Times then rolled out its own Wordle Archive, available only to NYT Games subscribers.
Is Wordle getting harder? It might feel like Wordle is getting harder, but it actually isn't any more difficult than when it first began. You can turn on Wordle's Hard Mode if you're after more of a challenge, though.

Shopping on Prime Day? Heres how to use a Visa gift card on Amazon.
Have a Visa gift card that you keep forgetting to use? Prime Day is the perfect rainy day to break that bad boy out — you'll be able to squeeze way more out of those free funds when just about everything is discounted. And BTW, the shopping event is four days long this year, a first for the summer shopping event. Prime Day 2025 officially kicks off on July 8 and runs all the way through July 11.
Adding a Visa gift card on Amazon isn't the process that you'd expect, though. While it is technically a gift card, it can't be registered as a gift card like an official Amazon gift card would. Instead, you'll have to register the gift card like you would register a legit Visa debit or credit card to start using it as a payment method.
SEE ALSO: How to sign up for Amazon Prime How to add a Visa gift card to make purchases on AmazonThe process might seem complicated, but follow these simple steps and should have no issues:
Go to Amazon on your phone, tablet, or computer and find your Account tab. On the mobile app, your Account lives in the little person icon at the bottom of the screen and in the three horizontal lines at the bottom right side of the screen. On a web browser, hover over Accounts & Lists at the top right corner of the webpage, then select Account from the dropdown menu that appears.
Once there, scroll to find the Your Payments tab. This option will take you to your digital wallet where you can view your added payment methods.
Click on Add a payment method. Because the gift card is a Visa, it functions like a regular debit or credit card, so scroll down to the credit or debit cards category to add the new card.
You'll then be prompted to add the necessary card information like the card number and expiration date.
Then, it'll ask for the Billing Address. Prepaid Visa gift cards aren't tied to a name or address, so you won't actually receive a billing statement. You can add your own address to be quick, or call the customer service number to get the card issuer's address.
There are a few caveats to consider when using a Visa gift card on Amazon. First, not all Visa gift cards may work as debit or credit cards on Amazon. Some may require users to use a CVV to authorize a purchase. Since Amazon doesn't ask for this information while adding payment methods, these Visa gift cards might not go through.
Also, Amazon doesn't allow users to combine multiple cards for a single transaction. This means that you can't cover your total with two Visa gift cards, or use up the remaining gift card balance as a partial payment and cover the rest with another credit or debit card. Keep an eye on your cart total as you chip away at it and make sure that the total order cost (including shipping and taxes) doesn't exceed the account balance.
There is, however, a workaround for tracking that Visa gift card balance. You can use the Visa gift card to add or reload funds on an Amazon gift card, which you can then apply toward future Amazon purchases. Once you add a Visa gift card as an Amazon payment method to your account by following the steps above, you can purchase an Amazon gift card for the full amount of the Visa gift card balance (taking into account any fees the Visa card may deduct upon use), or follow these steps to access your existing Amazon gift card balance and reload funds.

Jimmy Kimmel spends 3 minutes ripping Trumps T1 smartphone to shreds
Donald Trump's newly announced Trump Mobile network and T1 smartphone have been roundly mocked by Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert, and in the video above Jimmy Kimmel joins in.
"Their website was a mess from the get-go. When they launched yesterday their coverage map said Gulf of Mexico instead of Gulf of America, so he had them take that down, there have been reports that it is difficult to even order the phone, and even though they're billing the phones as all-American and made in the USA, the phone appears to be a reskinned version of a Chinese phone made by a company called Wingtech," says Kimmel in his Tuesday night monologue.
"Wingtech sells the same phone on Amazon for $171 right now. But once it gets spray-painted gold and emblazoned with the word Trump, it's $500. He's selling an all-American Chinese phone. I wonder if he'll slap some tariffs on himself for this."
To emphasise how ridiculous this whole thing is, Kimmel ends with a simple comparison. "I just want you to imagine Barack Obama, while he was in office, selling something like this," he says. "You think Fox News would be excited about that?"
For more information on the T1 smartphone itself, here's how it compares to the iPhone 16.
How to change your name on Facebook
Humans are not static creatures. Living is a process of discovery — of the world, of each other, and of yourself. As such, the name a person is given at birth isn't always the name they wish to carry to death. There are countless reasons why someone may choose to change their name, including marriage, affirmation of their gender identity, or simple dislike of the name they currently hold.
Fortunately, Facebook allows users to easily change their name on their profile, so you aren't stuck forever with the one you entered when first creating your account. Facebook itself changed its company name to Meta, after all.
Here's how to change your name on your Facebook account.
How to change your Facebook account name on desktop Total Time- 2 min
- Desktop or laptop
Step 1: Open Facebook.
Step 2: Click on the down arrow icon in the top right corner of your screen to open a menu.
Step 3: Click the "Settings & privacy" cog icon.

Step 6: Enter your new name, then click "Review Change."
Step 7: Choose how you want your name to be displayed — either your full first, middle, then last name; just your first and last name; or your surname, middle, then first name. Then enter your Facebook password and click "Save changes."

- Facebook app
Step 1: Open the Facebook app.
Step 2: Tap the "Menu" profile picture icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.
Step 3: Tap the cog icon in the top right corner of your screen to open your settings.
Step 4: Search "Name" in the search bar and select it.
Step 5: Enter your new name, then tap "Review Change."
Step 6: Choose how you want your name to be displayed — either your full first, middle, then last name; just your first and last name; or your surname, middle, then first name. Then enter your Facebook password and tap "Save changes."
It's a good idea to check for spelling mistakes before confirming the change, as well as make sure you're happy to stick with your new name for a while. Facebook doesn't let you change your name again within 60 days of altering it, so if you have second thoughts you'll just have to live with it for at least two months.
SEE ALSO: How to unlink Facebook and InstagramThere are some restrictions as to what Facebook considers a valid name. The social media platform refuses to accept titles such as Doctor or Queen, as well as offensive and suggestive words. It also won't allow symbols, numbers, unusual capitalisation, or punctuation, though X Æ A-Xii Musk is still normal enough by Facebook's standards.
Unfortunately, Facebook won't accept characters from multiple languages either. Anyone with an English first name and Chinese middle name for example will therefore have to transliterate one or the other to make their whole name fit under Facebook's rules.
However, Mashable was pleased to discover and is delighted to report that "Honey Glazed Ham" is considered a perfectly reasonable name.

How to block people on TikTok
TikTok sometimes feels like a lawless land full of multi-layered discourse, trends, and unruly comment sections. And there are times when you need to set boundaries for your peace of mind. Thankfully, it's pretty easy to block another user on TikTok. Here's how:
Total Time- 3 minutes
- iPhone and the TikTok app
Step 1: Open the TikTok account you want to block
Unfortunately, you do have to navitage to the TikTok account that you want to block. For this example, I'm using TikTok's official account.
Credit: Screenshot / TikTokStep 2: Click the share button
It seems a bit counterintuitive, but the next step to blocking someone on TikTok is to click the share button in the top right corner of their profile
Credit: Screenshot / TikTokStep 3: Select Block
When you choose the share button, a popup will allow you to choose someone to share it with directly on the app. I have those blocked out here, but, trust me, they're there. Beneath that, you'll have the options for sharing the page outside of the app, by copying the link, sending it in a text message, or on another social media platform. Below that, you have four options: report, block, send message, and QR code. Click Block.
Credit: Screenshot / TikTokStep 4: Select Block again
Once you select block, a popup will appear that reads: "Block [insert account]? They will not be able to send you messages, see your posts, or find your profile. This doesn't included extended scenarios like multi-host livestreams, duets posted by others, or group chats you both participate in. They will not be notified that you blocked them." Below this message, you have the option to click "cancel," or "Block." Choose "Block."
Credit: Screenshot / tikTokThere you go! You've blocked an account on TikTok. To unblock them, navigate to their profile and click "unblock." You can't miss it: It's in the center of the page in bright red.
Happy blocking!

I tried the futuristic Nuance Hearing Glasses. Do they pass the crowded restaurant test?
Hearing loss is something of an epidemic in the United States, where the population is rapidly aging. Chances are, your hearing isn't as good as it could be. Maybe you're like me and you spent way too many hours in a way too small basement playing way too loud metal music without hearing protection (an admittedly extreme example), or maybe you merely spend too much time listening to your earbuds. Regardless, hearing health affects your quality of life, safety, and social life.
According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 20 people need treatment to address hearing loss, and that number will jump to 1 in 10 by 2050. Yet an astonishingly high percentage of us do nothing about this problem. Whether it's the cost of hearing aids, the discomfort of wearing them, or the social stigma, many people — like me — just live with it.
Personally, I avoid bars and other venues with a lot of ambient noise. When dining out, I often find myself staring at the people around me, marveling that they can actually, you know, hear each other.
What if a pair of smart glasses could also act as hearing aids, bringing you back into the conversation? That's the idea behind Nuance Audio. And after testing the brand's debut smart glasses and hearing aids hybrid for about three weeks, I'm ready to share my full Nuance Hearing Glasses review.
What are Nuance Hearing Glasses? You may already be familiar with EssilorLuxottica. If not, they're the company behind brands such as Ray-Ban, Transitions, Coach, Foster Grant, LensCrafters, Pearl Vision, Target Optical, and tons more. Nuance Audio is a new sub-brand of EssilorLuxottica, and its mission is to put a functional pair of hearing aids into glasses. This way, a person can wear their normal eyewear and get all the benefits of hearing aids.
That's a noble and futuristic mission, which is why I first visited the company's booth back at CES 2024 (and again at IFA and CES 2025). I've been waiting for the company's final FDA approval and U.S. launch date to arrive, and now they're finally here.
Credit: Adam Doud / MashableI attended the launch event for Nuance Audio glasses in New York City last month. During the event, YouTuber iJustine served as an MC for the event, and hearing her describe the glasses, it sounded like she was reading from a script pulled directly from my own brain: What if you could sit in a crowded restaurant and follow along with the conversations around you? To me, that's basically impossible now. So when Justine talked about that scenario, I was stoked. Finally, I would be able to go to a dinner, ambience be damned.
So, do the Nuance Hearing Glasses really work? Yes, but they don't quite pass the restaurant test.
Attractive, unobtrusive hardwareThe glasses are relatively non-descript. They have thick black frames — my wife calls them "Drew Carey glasses," and if we're being honest, that's fair. There are two styles of frames — Square and Panthos (which has rounder lenses) — and they come in either black or burgundy. The glasses themselves are fairly basic. Each frame has directional microphones at the front of the earpiece, a button on the bottom of the right arm, and two speaker grilles on the top and bottom of each earpiece.
Inside the box, you'll also find a foldable case to carry the glasses and a charging stand. The charging stand plugs in with a USB-C connection, and you lay the glasses upside down to charge them wirelessly.
You can get these glasses with your visual prescription, and the transitional lenses let them work as regular eye glasses or sunglasses, a very nice touch.
Credit: Adam Doud / Mashable Credit: Adam Doud / Mashable Hearing aids onlyTo use the glasses, you pair them with the Nuance app on your smartphone. I had mine paired with my iPhone 16 Pro Max, but you can use Android as well. Pairing the glasses allows you to set up your individual audio profile and adjust hearing settings as needed. One thing you cannot do is stream audio to the glasses like you can with the Meta Ray-Ban Bluetooth glasses. When I asked why that was, it came down to battery life and overall use case.
Streaming audio to earbuds/glasses can be draining. The glasses do pair to your phone via Bluetooth, but only so you can adjust settings. All the audio processing is done on the glasses themselves, so there's no need for a continuous flow of data between them. For self-explanatory reasons, Nuance Hearing Glasses are primarily meant to help your hearing, not let you listen to Spotify. These glasses have a different use case and different hardware. So, the lack of streaming audio is a bummer, but totally understandable, given the circumstances.
The good news: The glasses' battery life lasts all day, which was one of the goals Nuance set out to accomplish. I do wish the charging solution was more portable. After all, EssilorLuxottica also developed the Meta Ray-Bans, which charge in the case, and that solution was right there for the taking. I do appreciate that when you're wearing the glasses, the case folds down flat, which makes it much easier to carry than the Ray-Bans, so it's a good news/bad news scenario.
The software behind the hardware Credit: Adam Doud / MashableAs to how they work, the glasses take in audio using the directional microphones on the front of the glasses and pipe audio into your ears through the earpieces. There are four presets you can use, cleverly labeled A, B, C, and D, in the app. I won't get into the nitty gritty to break down what each preset does, but they're designed to accommodate different scenarios.
The app also has volume control and other controls. You can change the directionality of the microphone so you can amplify what you're looking at or everything around you, depending on the situation. Overall, the app is very neatly organized and easy to navigate.
The button on the right arm is the power and volume button. Long-press the button to turn the glasses on and off, and short-press the button to adjust the volume. You use the app to do everything else, including setting up your personal calibration. During the calibration process, the glasses listen to the ambient noise around you, then play a clip of white noise. Finally, you're prompted to count out loud from one to 20. I'm not positive the personal calibration did a lot for me, but your mileage may vary, of course. There's also a standard calibration you can go back to at any time.
Mr. RobotoWhen you're wearing the glasses, the sounds around you are amplified, generally within a narrow cone of about 15 degrees or so. If you turn away from someone as they speak, you'll lose the sound of their voice, so it's important to stay focused on them. The enhanced audio that you hear is a little robotic and has some feedback to it. Imagine listening to the world around you and hearing a lot of mid-tones and high end without the underlying bass.
It's a little like the audio equivalent of the sharpen tool in most photography software. Basically, when you use the sharpen tool, the software picks up the outlines of items in the photo, but at the expense of the blend that makes it all go together. As you progressively sharpen an image, it gets uglier and less natural. The same goes for the Nuance Audio glasses.
Everything you hear — including your own voice — is amplified, but also emphasized by cranking up the midrange and high tones. It almost sounds like there's a little bit of feedback coming through, like when you point a microphone at a speaker it's connected to. There's a very subtle ring to everything you hear. That can be a good thing, because it's emphasizing what you need to hear — voices for example — but it also gives everything an unnatural tone that can be hard to get used to.
So, when you're talking with someone, you can hear them more clearly, which is good. But the biggest disappointment circles back to my dream restaurant scenario. When you're in a crowded venue with music or a drone of conversation around you, these glasses don't really help a whole lot. I really wanted these hearing aid glasses to pass the restaurant test, and it's the one scenario where they just don't help a whole lot.
The most disappointing part Credit: Adam Doud / MashableI am not an audio engineer, but what I think is going on here is a combination of factors. First, the glasses pick up your own voice way too much. In order for the glasses to be helpful in a loud environment like a restaurant, you need to crank them up, but when you do, your own voice becomes deafening. The second issue is that these glasses don't have active noise cancellation, or if they do, it's not very good. The app has a section titled "Background noise" in which you can select lowered, standard, or heightened, but none of them really did much for me.
There are earbuds with ANC that don't form a good seal with your ears. The AirPods 4 with ANC are the most notable example, so I tried wearing these glasses along with my AirPods to see if they canceled out the noise while the glasses picked up the voices. I want to say the experiment helped, but it wasn't the magic bullet I'd hoped for.
The Verdict: A good first stepHere's the bottom line: The glasses need to do a better job at Active Noise Cancellation and at isolating and eliminating your own voice. When and if Nuance can solve that equation, we'll be in great shape.
As they exist today, I think they do an OK job at solving the problem they set out to solve. If you are someone who has difficulty hearing in all circumstances, including when you're in a quiet room, these could do a good job for you. But if you're hoping you can finally rejoin conversations in a noisy restaurant, you might need traditional hearing aids. Again, your mileage may vary depending on how your hearing loss has progressed. All things considered, my hearing loss is minor, so I won't need to wear these daily. I just wish that I could wear them when I head out for the evening, so I could get back to participating in those conversations I so sorely miss.
For a product that costs $1,200, I think that's a fair ask on my part.

6 Android Bluetooth trackers that work just as well as AirTags
For a long time, Apple cornered the market with its AirTag, and for good reason. It works well, has wide support, and it’s even been used to track down stolen vehicles before. The only bummer is that you can’t really use them with Android devices, which means those folks need to find an alternative. That is why you’re here after all, so let’s not bury the lede any further.
What makes Apple AirTags great is a combination of three factors. The first is that Apple’s Find My network is vast, and AirTags can be found with the help of other people’s iPhones. Second is ultra-wideband (UWB) support, which lets AirTags talk to iPhones, other AirTags, and even Android phones to an extent. Finally, they’re inexpensive, at just $29 per tag, making them accessible to most people.
As of this writing, only one product truly replicates that Apple experience on Android devices. Still, even with other Android-compatible Bluetooth trackers, you can come pretty close, and the tech is improving all the time. So, if you’re ready to not lose your keys anymore, here are some Android Bluetooth trackers that work (almost) as well as AirTags.
Best overall: Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 Opens in a new window Credit: Samsung Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2, Pack of 2 $33.99 at AmazonShop Now
People with Samsung phones can get closer to the AirTag experience than any other Android phone user, and that is thanks to the Galaxy SmartTag2. In terms of features, it has the same guts as an AirTag, including UWB support, an IP67 rating, and it can be detected by nearby devices via Samsung’s SmartThings Find network. You can even make it ring, check its location history, and customize it to perform other, simple tasks.
The only downside is that Samsung’s SmartThings Find network isn’t quite as fleshed out as Apple’s Find My network, so you may have some trouble finding your tag in some areas. With that said, it’s better than Google’s Find Hub network (as of this writing), so it’s easily the second-best option. This is as close to a true Apple AirTag experience you can get on Android. You just need a Samsung phone to use it.
Runner-up: Motorola Moto Tag Opens in a new window Credit: Motorola Moto Tag $29.99 at AmazonShop Now
Motorola makes a tag as well, and it’s not half bad. In terms of price and features, it’s about even with the rest of the Google Find Hub-compatible Bluetooth trackers on the list. You can ring it to help find it, and it has a decent Bluetooth range, but the Moto Tag has some tricks that its Google Hub Find competitors don’t. The first is UWB support, a rare but modern feature that enables more precise tracking and positioning at close range.
The other is a little more nuanced. The Moto Tag has a companion app, and one of the features of that app is firmware updates. This is one of the ways that Apple and Samsung stay ahead of the pack, as they can improve their tags over time with better firmware. The overwhelming majority of competitors in this space don’t do that, which means the Moto Tag will likely improve more over time. If you want all the modern features like UWB and firmware updates, the Moto Tag is the one to get.
In third place: Chipolo POP Tracker Opens in a new window Credit: Chipolo Chipolo POP Tracker $29 at AmazonShop Now
Mashable Tech Editor Timothy Werth tested Chipolo trackers when reviewing the best Bluetooth trackers for us, and he came away favorably impressed. These trackers do everything they set out to do, Werth said, and with a splash of color. Plus, they have the added benefit of working with both Android and iOS devices.
Other than the Moto Tag, the new Chipolo POP Tracker is about as good as it gets. This one works with both Google’s Find Hub and Apple’s Find My networks. However, it should be noted that it doesn’t work with both simultaneously. That’s a shame because it would increase its tracking capabilities monumentally, but it’s still nice that it supports both platforms.
Unlike the Galaxy SmartTag2, Chipolo relies solely on a Bluetooth connection for its tracking, so there is no UWB support here. It does boast a Bluetooth range of up to 300 feet, which should be good enough in most cases. It also sports a speaker so you can ring the tracker, an IP55 dust and water resistance rating, and it comes in six colors. The biggest complaint is one that is fairly common. Google’s Find Hub network is less developed than Samsung or Apple, but Google has improved its network dramatically since it first launched.
The cheapest option: MiLi MiTag Opens in a new window Credit: MiLi MiLi MiTag $13.99 at Amazon$14.99 Save $1 Get Deal
The MiLi MiTag is about as affordable as it gets in the Bluetooth tracker space. It costs a scant $15 on Amazon, which is lower than any other tag we could find. For the price, you get a Bluetooth tracker with a rated range of 500 feet, but no UWB. It also comes with an IP67 rating, a speaker so you can hear it, and a replaceable CR2032 battery. The company doesn’t make any claims on battery life, but most of these things can last a year on a single battery.
In terms of use, it works about as well as the Chipolo POP. You connect it to Google’s My Hub network, and you’re off to the races. Unlike the Chipolo, the MiTag doesn’t support iOS and Android on one device, but MiLi sells an iOS-specific version if you need it. In any case, it’s mostly the same pros and cons as the Chipolo. It works well enough on Google’s swiftly improving network while costing half as much as most competitors.
Another cross-platform option: Tile Mate Opens in a new window Credit: Tile Tile Mate, 4-Pack $79.99 at AmazonGet Deal
The Tile Mate is one of the first Bluetooth trackers on the market, and it remains a solid option as a Bluetooth tracker. Most modern trackers fit into Apple, Google, or Samsung’s network, but Tile does things a little differently. It has its own network, which you access via the Life360 app, and thus, it works with both iOS and Android devices simultaneously. That makes it a good option for households where both platforms are present, since cross-platform support is apparently too hard for the other tech giants.
In terms of features, the Tile Mate is competitive. It can do the usual stuff like ring your phone from the tracker. You can also trigger a silent alarm with the SOS feature that alerts loved ones that you’re in danger. Its only potential issue is that the Tile network is arguably the least developed of the major competitors, so it may be difficult to find your stuff in less populated areas.
The one with light: Pebblebee Tracker Opens in a new window Credit: Pebblebee Pebblebee Tracker $34.99 at AmazonShop Now
The Pebblebee Tracker is another competent option in this space. Like most, it relies solely on Bluetooth without UWB support, but does boast a decent 500-foot range, which should make it easy enough to find on Google’s Find Hub network in most cases. For the most part, it’s more of the same for the Pebblebee. It has a speaker for sounding alarms, an IPX6 rating, and it also works with Apple’s Find My network if you want to go that route.
Pebblebee has two claims to fame with its tracker. The first is its inclusion of an LED light along the bottom that can help you find the tag in low-light conditions, and it’s one of the few options on the market with a rechargeable battery. So, instead of popping out a C2032 battery like most trackers, you simply plug this thing in for a little bit, and it’ll charge right up. On the downside, if that battery dies for good, it’ll be harder to replace. In other words, you can pick your poison, but in the short term, a rechargeable battery is nice.
There’s no doubt that the Apple AirTag dominates the market in terms of network reliability and usage, but Android phones are fast approaching. Samsung will almost certainly reach parity with Apple first, but Google is hot on its heels with a continually improving and expanding network of its own. Bluetooth trackers have that same vibe. Apple and Samsung are the clear winners, but the Moto Tag is equally good, and the other competitors are perfectly competent for their price tags.
Scientists spotted a giant comet spewing gas 2 billion miles from sun
A strange, city-sized comet seems to have woken up early as it drifts toward the sun — even though it's still much farther than Saturn in space.
Using a giant Chilean desert telescope, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, scientists got a detailed look at C/2014 UN271. This comet, commonly known as Bernardinelli–Bernstein, is one of the largest and most distant ever detected, and it’s doing something no one saw coming. Despite being extremely far from the sun's heat in the freezing outskirts of the solar system, this 500 trillion-ton behemoth is already breaking down and releasing gas.
Scientists aimed ALMA at the comet in March 2024 and saw carbon monoxide — a gas that usually doesn’t show up in observations that far away — gushing out of its surface in jets. The team also picked up signs of dust and heat coming from its icy, 85-mile-wide nucleus.
It’s the farthest comet ever caught doing this in millimeter-wavelength light, which the ground telescope uses to look at cold cosmic objects.
"We’re seeing explosive outgassing patterns that raise new questions about how this comet will evolve as it continues its journey toward the inner solar system," said NASA's Nathan Roth, lead author of the new research, in a statement.
SEE ALSO: Ancient moon volcanoes made tiny glass beads. Here's what they mean. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.Comets, known for their millions-of-miles-long streaks, are among the oldest objects in the solar system. These boulders of ice, dust, and rock are leftover from the early days of planet formation, about 4.6 billion years ago.
Astronomers often think of them as time capsules of the ancient solar system, perhaps holding the secrets of how primitive Earth got water and other critical chemistry to eventually spawn life. So far there are over 4,000 known comets that scientists continue to track.
As comets swing closer and closer to the sun, their ice disintegrates, converting from a solid to a gas in one fell swoop, skipping over the liquid phase. Their tails are made of vaporizing ice, dust, and carbon dioxide debris.
But this comet — still 1.5 billion miles away — is already active and has been for at least the past year, according to the new study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The findings show complex and evolving jets of carbon monoxide bursting from the comet’s nucleus.
"These measurements give us a look at how this enormous, icy world works," Roth said.
Bernardinelli–Bernstein has an estimated 3-million-year-long orbit, taking it about half a light-year away from the sun. It’s thought to come from the so-called Oort Cloud, a sphere of ancient, icy objects surrounding the solar system. NASA says this cloud remains a theory because the comets there have been too faint and distant to be directly observed.
Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein, with a nucleus roughly 85 miles wide, is the largest detected so far. Credit: NASA / ESA / Zena Levy (STScI) illustrationBernardinelli–Bernstein is now traveling inward, with its closest point to the sun expected in early 2031. The gas coming off the comet mostly seems to be carbon monoxide, which can evaporate at low temperatures. Scientists also looked for formaldehyde but didn’t find any.
What's perhaps more intriguing than the gas itself is how it's coming out. The telescope's view showed that the jets of gas were spurting from different locations on the comet that shifted around over time.
Shortly before the team's observations, the comet had an outburst — a short, bright flash of activity — then calmed down a few weeks later. That kind of behavior suggests the comet has a complex, active surface with lots going on just beneath it.
As the comet keeps heading toward the sun, traveling into warmer regions, more types of gases might begin to escape. Scientists think methane could start to emerge soon, followed by other chemicals like ethane and perhaps ammonia or acetylene closer to 2031.
The researchers say the comet may provide a rare "window" into the composition of small Kuiper Belt Objects, ice-rock bodies orbiting the sun beyond Neptune, thought to be relatively unchanged over billions of years.
"As UN271 continues to approach the Sun," the authors wrote, "additional volatiles should be expected to activate, revealing the primitive chemistry preserved within."
