You Don't Need a Thermometer to Measure Temperature, Your Pixel Phone Can Do That
I’ve never been fond of burning my lips or mouth from hot drinks, but I can’t be carrying a thermometer everywhere to see how hot a cup of tea or coffee is. Luckily, my Google Pixel 9 Pro XL can measure the temperatures of various objects.

Reading manuals and wikis might sound tedious, but it's something I like about Linux. It might sound strange, but the way Linux and Unix docs are designed, it's much less of a chore than with other software.
Lofree Flow 2 Review: A Fine, But Misguided Mechanical Keyboard
The Lofree Flow 2 is yet another iteration of the company’s growing line of slim, mechanical keyboards. While this one makes plenty of fine decisions about functionality, the lopsided design is just one of the questionable choices buyers will need to grapple with.
The 3 best gaming laptops with Nvidia GPUs in 2025, so far
We’ve seen some top-notch laptops debut in 2025 so far, with AI-powered processors that extend battery life without sacrificing performance and sharp display technology that’s slowly becoming more affordable. In the gaming laptop world, specifically, we’re spying new 50-series GPUs that show off incredible power and still-capable 40-series GPUs with healthy discounts.
Multiple 2025 gaming laptops have been launched already this year, but we want to highlight three particular models that impressed us more than the others. These three portable powerhouses are easily the best gaming laptops with Nvidia GPUs this year — at least for the time being.
Right before the holidays, around October and November, we expect to see more 2025 models of fan-favorite gaming laptops launch. When they do, we’ll stack them up against the three gaming laptops we’ve awarded winning titles to here in mid-2025 and see how they compare.
Best overall: Razer Blade 16 Credit: Joe Maldonado / MashableOur sister publication, PCMag, had plenty of positive things to say about the new 2025 Razer Blade 16, the gaming laptop we think shines brightest so far this year. PCMag’s Matthew Buzzi says, “With the 2025 Blade 16, Razer proves once again that it can deliver powerhouse performance and stunning design in one sleek, high-priced package.”
At its steep starting price of $2,399, the new Blade 16 features an AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 CPU, 16GB of RAM, an Nvidia RTX 5060 GPU, and 1TB of SSD storage. Doubling the RAM and storage and upgrading to a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 CPU and an RTX 5090 GPU bumps the price up to a whopping $4,499.
We never said this was a cheap gaming laptop, but it’s definitely one of the best gaming laptops with an Nvidia GPU you can shop right now. Having “crowned the RTX 5090 the new fastest mobile GPU (as you’d expect),” it’s no surprise that PCMag’s 5090-powered Blade 16 thoroughly impressed in all its performance tests, from daily productivity use to intense gaming benchmarks.
Despite incredible performance capabilities, Razer’s new Blade 16 isn’t slacking in the battery department. Most gaming laptops don’t last too long on video rundown tests, simply because their internals demand too much power. However, the $4,499 configuration PCMag used in its video rundown test lasted a whopping 10 hours and 12 minutes, nearly three hours longer than its predecessor.
Considering this laptop’s internals and its gorgeous 16-inch, 2560 x 1600-pixel OLED display, that’s a jaw-dropping battery life result. With a 10+ hour battery life and a “svelte, premium metal build” that’s luxurious and not overly flashy like many gaming rigs, the Razer Blade 16 is a well-rounded laptop that you can easily bring to work or class during the day and shuffle home to play games at high settings to relax at night.

In my Predator Helios 16 review, I said it was “equipped with internals that’ll keep you sailing smoothly through heavy gaming pressure and everyday tasks” — all at a worthy price.
Inside, our review unit featured an Intel Core i9 14900HX as the brains of the whole operation, an RTX 4080 GPU that handles AAA games beautifully, and a plentiful 32GB of RAM and 2TB of SSD storage — all for just $2,299 at the time of review. It doesn’t look like you can buy our exact review unit anymore, but you can snag even better next-gen value with a 50-series Nvidia GPU.
For just $1,549 at full price, the Predator Helios Neo 16S AI features half the RAM and storage of our review unit at 16GB and 1TB, respectively, but upgrades the processor to Intel’s latest Core Ultra 9 275HX and swaps in a more powerful Nvidia RTX 5060 graphics card. Its 16-inch, 2560 x 1600-pixel, 240Hz display we loved in our review is also getting a gorgeous OLED upgrade, which means it’ll deliver richer contrast and more vibrant colors.
This newer configuration even ditches the “strong gamer aesthetic” we noted in our review, making it a more inconspicuous rig to bring along to work or class. With an AI-powered processor, we’re also hopeful this means it’ll have better battery life than our review model.

Technically, our HP Omen 17 review unit launched in 2024, but the latest 2025 model looks just as sleek, with a minimalist chassis that’ll have you guessing whether it’s a gaming laptop or not. The 2025 HP Omen 17 keeps the same beautiful, matte black chassis with a simple Omen logo on the top lid, while upgrading the internals to keep up with modern AAA games.
Like our review unit, this 2025 Omen 17 configuration comes with 1TB of SSD storage and 32GB of RAM, perfect for those who love to have multiple apps open in the background while gaming or for tab-hoarding research enthusiasts. It also shares the same sharp 17.3-inch, 2560 x 1440-pixel display with a buttery smooth 240Hz refresh rate we loved on the 2024 model.
The HP Omen 17 proved to be an incredible performer, whether tackling basic productivity tasks or fighting terminids in Helldivers 2 at high settings — and that configuration only had an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS processor and an RTX 4070 graphics card.
This updated 2025 model features an even more powerful AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 CPU and one of Nvidia’s new RTX 5070 GPUs, first announced at CES 2025. Despite more powerful internals, it’s only $200 pricier than the 2024 HP Omen 17 at full price.
In short, the HP Omen 17 is our top pick for anyone wanting a powerful gaming laptop that can double as an inconspicuous laptop for school or work. You can certainly play around with customized RGB lighting if you want, or keep things plain and simple.

Murderbot finale: David Dastmalchian breaks down Gurathin and Murderbots heartbreaking goodbye
For David Dastmalchian (Life of Chuck, Late Night with the Devil), filming Apple TV+'s sci-fi series Murderbot was "an incredibly emotional experience."
SEE ALSO: Does the 'Murderbot' cast relate to Murderbot?Dastmalchian plays Dr. Gurathin, an augmented human and a member of the PresAux survey group. Unlike the rest of the very loving, very open group, Gurathin is more cagey, as well as immediately distrustful of security android Murderbot (Alexander Skarsgård). As the show reveals, Gurathin's lack of trust and more loner status stems from his mistreatment at the hands of Murderbot's nefarious Company, who coerced him into substance addiction during his time working for them.
"Gurathin is, similar to me, a person who has struggled and wrestled with both addiction, as well as a compulsive disorder in which control is an addiction all in its own," Dastmalchian told Mashable in an interview for an upcoming episode of Mashable's Say More. "So Gurathin is a person who maintains his own security and safety by keeping the people he loves very close and trying to control the things around him as much as he possibly can."
That control manifests itself especially in Season 1's first few episodes, which sees Gurathin prodding at Murderbot and trying to figure out what is "off" about it. However, by the season's end, Gurathin has grown to love Murderbot just as much as his PresAux compatriots, so much so that when he finds out the Company has wiped Murderbot's memories, he finds a workaround to download them all himself, then pass them back onto Murderbot.
SEE ALSO: Will there be a 'Murderbot' Season 2? Here's what we know. From there, PresAux head Dr. Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) buys out Murderbot's contract, hoping to bring it back to the utopic Preservation Alliance, where it will have free will. However, Murderbot decides it wants to make its own decisions, and it jets off into space by itself.
David Dastmalchian in "Murderbot." Credit: Apple TV+The last person it sees before it heads out is Gurathin, who tells Murderbot he's ready to show it around Preservation, and that he understands, to a certain extent, what that transition might entail, as someone tied to the Company now being given free agency.
However, Murderbot interrupts, eyes watering. "I need to check the perimeter," it says.
It's a phrase ripped right from Murderbot's role as a SecUnit, but it hides a deeper meaning: Murderbot needs to strike out on its own.
Gurathin understands, echoing the words back: "You need to check the perimeter."
It's a quiet yet heart-wrenching scene, as well as the culmination of Gurathin and Murderbot's journey from adversaries to beings who finally understand one another. According to Dastmalchian, the scene also spoke to his relationship with the Murderbot cast and crew, including Skarsgård.
"The family that I'd grown to love in making the show, including my castmates and the creators and all the crew, we were very close," Dastmalchian said. "And it was odd, in a way, that makes you feel both that there is a beautiful, golden thread that connects the universe and also can make you feel a little crazy sometimes, when you're like, 'Wow, these words are more personally significant than I could have ever imagined.'"
He continued: "When we reach that moment where [Gurathin] is saying... 'I just broke through a level of understanding about you, and now I have to let you go,' it's hard. It's a part of the human experience that many of us experience, either through death or through the end of things. Relationships end. Sometimes people have to go away, sometimes for themselves, and that kind of acceptance hit me in the moment, while I'm performing as a fictional character in a TV series based on a book series. I was sitting there doing the scene with Alex, and he's such a phenomenal actor, and he's so, so present, even when portraying a construct, it was very emotional."
As emotional as the scene is, both for viewers and the actors performing it, it is thankfully not the end of the road for Murderbot and Gurathin. On July 10, Apple TV+ announced that Murderbot has been renewed for a second season. While Gurathin doesn't show up in the second installment of Martha Wells's The Murderbot Diaries, he does return further down the line, meaning there could be a reunion between Murderbot, Gurathin, and all of PresAux in the future.
Lena Dunhams Too Much continues 2025s TV trend of abortion representation
Lena Dunham is no stranger to depicting abortion onscreen.
In Season 4 of Girls, Mimi-Rose (Gillian Jacobs) casually tells her boyfriend, Adam (Adam Driver), that she's had an abortion. While her revelation leads to a larger argument, her initial statement offered a no-frills take on a controversial topic. (In 2016, Dunham also came under fire for comments about wishing she'd had an abortion, for which she later apologized.)
Now, Dunham continues to bring abortion to TV with her new Netflix series, Too Much. The abortion takes place in the show's fifth episode, titled "Pink Valentine." The name is a riff on the 2010 film Blue Valentine, which charts a relationship from its romantic beginning to its painful end. Fittingly, the episode follows suit, with Too Much's lead Jessica (Hacks' Megan Stalter) reminiscing on her eight-year relationship with her ex, Zev (Michael Zegen), during a ketamine trip.
SEE ALSO: 'Too Much' review: Lena Dunham gifts us TV's newest disaster coupleWhile the buildup to the ketamine trip itself is a bit clunky, "Pink Valentine"s extended flashback sequence is an emotional wrecking ball. Jessica and Zev go from a pizza meet-cute and a loving relationship to hating and resenting one another. Zev, in particular, grows disdainful of Jessica, tossing her pink pillows when they move in together, bashing her love of reality TV, and reducing her anxieties about their relationship to nothing more than "sob stories."
The entire episode re-contextualizes what we know about Jessica and her relationships before she moved to London. She's not just the "crazy ex-girlfriend" archetype presented in episode 1, which saw her break back into her old apartment and scare Zev and his new girlfriend, Wendy (Emily Ratajkowski). That was admittedly not the best move, but there's more depth and history to her than that freakout. We learn that Zev made her give up a dog they got together, which gives greater significance to her attachment to her current dog, Astrid — and to her current boyfriend Felix's (Will Sharpe, The White Lotus) care for her. We also learn that the pair once dreamed of having kids together, and that at the end of the relationship, Jessica got an abortion.
Too Much's abortion storyline makes for a brutal breakup — but not how you'd expect.During a particularly rough patch in her and Zev's relationship, Jessica cheats on him and has unprotected sex with a production assistant she's been working with. She gets pregnant, with Too Much heavily implying that the production assistant is the father instead of Zev.
A distraught Jessica prepares to tell Zev about her pregnancy, but when he comes home and berates her for sitting alone in the dark, she switches gears to an important but devastating question: "Do you still love me? At all?"
"I don't know," he replies.
"OK, well, I'm pregnant, so I guess I'll go get an abortion or something," Jessica says.
"Yeah, that's probably the right idea," Zev says.
SEE ALSO: Did Lena Dunham just make Andrew Scott unsexy in 'Too Much'?The casual language — Jessica's "or something"; Zev's almost-flippant "probably the right idea" — disguises the intense emotions of the scene. There's a lot of feeling bound up in Jessica's statement, which comes through in Stalter's raw dramatic performance. It's clear Jessica wants this moment to be a bigger deal, one in which Zev's love resurfaces enough to comfort her. After all, it was just earlier in the episode that he told Jessica's family he thought she "would make an amazing mother."
Her response? "I want to have kids with you."
But that desire and love fades over the course of the rest of the episode, resulting in the short exchange above with Zev. The abortion marks a brutal bookend to those earlier talks about family, acting as a definitive end to the relationship.
Too Much joins other 2025 shows, like Ginny & Georgia and Adults, in depicting abortion. While Too Much doesn't shy away from the emotional baggage of the abortion, it also doesn't stigmatize Jessica's decision. Nor does it portray the actual procedure as dangerous or painful beyond Jessica's sadness over her breakup. That there's no hand-wringing or dilemma over the abortion itself recalls Mimi-Rose's abortion in Girls, which notably did not show the actual procedure.
Any frank portrayal of abortion onscreen feels relevant now, as the Trump administration targets reproductive rights, including the right to an abortion. And Too Much is not alone in its representation of abortion in the current TV landscape. Earlier this year, Ginny & Georgia Season 3 took a long, thoughtful approach to Ginny's (Antonia Gentry) choice to get an abortion, similarly not overdramatizing the procedure. Elsewhere, FX's Adults tackled these issues from a different angle, introducing a teen character who's traveled to New York in order to get an abortion, as she can't get one in her state.
While these approaches range from the comedic to the dramatic, none of them come with judgment over the pregnancy or a character's decision to terminate it. Instead, they're crucial portrayals of a medical procedure that hundreds of thousands of women get per year in the United States. (In 2023, following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, that number rose to over a million.) In the end, these thoughtful depictions aren't just plot points. They're necessary reminders to viewers that abortion is a possibility, and — despite what the government may say — a human right.

10 best last-minute Prime Day deals to level up your home chef setup
Building up your kitchen tools, much like cooking, is a labor of love. While it's tempting to buy a cart full of products recommended by popular chef and food creators, those costs can add up fast.
For many home cooks, that means Prime Day is an excellent time to add a tool (or two) to their kitchen setup. As an avid home cook myself, I've definitely spent some time browsing the available deals, so I decided to put those hours spent to use and make a list of 10 of the best Prime Day deals for home chefs wanting to upgrade the kitchen.
Whether you never quite kicked your pandemic sourdough habit or have a basic kitchen but are ready to fine-tune your setup some more, this list is for you. You'll want to act quick, though — Prime Day is over at 11:59 p.m. PT on July 11 or 2:59 a.m. ET on July 12. With just a few hours to go, here are the deals I recommend:
A thermometer ThermoPro Digital Meat Thermometer $12.99 at Amazon$17.99 Save $5.00 Get Deal
We as a society need to get over our fear of cooking chicken. If you don't already have one, a thermometer is a very easy way to do that — and it beats crossing your fingers and hoping your chicken isn't pink when cutting into it. While there are some really excellent options at slightly higher price points (like this ThermoWorks one), this $11.99 option should more than enough to do the trick. Say goodbye to overcooked salmon and dry chicken breasts.
A reliable quarter sheet pan Nordic Ware Naturals Quarter Sheet (2-Pack) $22 at AmazonGet Deal
A quarter sheet pan is an unsung hero of the kitchen. It can be great for organizing prepped food before you start cooking, baking smaller servings, baking items with different cook times, or even as a spoon rest. They're small enough to be versatile to do a whole lot, and these ones from Nordic Ware are built to last (with proper care).
Deli containers JoyServe Deli Containers (24-pack) $12.99 at Amazon$19.99 Save $7.00 Get Deal
If you follow any chef on social media, you've likely seen them using deli containers — and for good reason. These unassuming containers can fill so many needs in the kitchen, from ingredient storage to meal prep to a nice big cup for drinking from. If you really want to cosplay being a chef, you can label your containers with painter's tape and a Sharpie. Trust me, it changes the game for fridge organization. (Note: while you can 100 percent get these at a restaurant supply store, you may have to buy in bulk, whereas this smaller $10 set is more to get you started.)
A KitchenAid stand mixer KitchenAid Artisan Series Stand Mixer (5-quart) $379.95 at Amazon$499.99 Save $120.04 Get Deal
Is this a particularly out-of-the-box choice? No, but a KitchenAid stand mixer is a classic for a reason. Though expensive, these mixers are built to last, and — you guessed it — do a whole lot of tasks in the kitchen. You can knead bread dough, make dough cakes and cookies, roll out pasta dough, and fold in ingredients. At five quarts and $380, this stand mixer sits right in the middle in both size and price, making it a great option for most people.
Immersion blender Cuisinart Immersion Blender $48.24 at Amazon$59.95 Save $11.71 Get Deal
Vitamix blender deals get a lot of love around Prime Day, but an immersion blender can be a nice extension of a really solid blender. Whether you're blending out a soup, making the creamiest homemade Caesar dressing, or even making a smoothie in a pinch, an immersion blender can expand your blending possibilities in the kitchen.
A good cookbook Opens in a new window Credit: Hailee Catalano 'By Heart: Recipes to Hold Near and Dear' $13.99 at Amazon$35 Save $21.01 Get Deal
To Cafe Hailee fans — IFYKYK. To everyone else, Hailee Catalano is a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef and delightful social media presence who wrote a cookbook that's perfect for the chef or baker looking to elevate their kitchen game. With recipes like Roast Chicken with Red Wine Vinegar and Honey and Malted Milk Butter Cookies, Hailee's cookbook teaches technique without feeling inaccessible, making it a great grab this Prime Day.
Stainless steel cookware Made In 10-inch Stainless Steel Frying Pan $129 at AmazonGet Deal
If you love stainless steel pans, they will love you back — meaning they'll last long enough to be passed down through generations. On that note, did you know you're supposed to toss nonstick pans after you scratch them? Using stainless steel can be a bit of a learning curve, but once you learn, you'll get evenly heated, well-crusted food that refuses to stick when it shouldn't. And unlike a cast iron or carbon steel pan, you can use stainless steel to cook acidic foods like tomato sauce because there's no seasoning to strip. Made In has a few different sets on sale this Prime Day, but this 10-inch frying pan is sure to be a kitchen workhorse.
A Dutch oven Overmont Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven (5.5-quart) $59.99 at Amazon$69.99 Save $10.00 Get Deal
Speaking of cast iron — enameled Dutch ovens aren't just for looking cute on your stove top (though they do excel at that). They're perfect for baking bread, searing off meats before you cook them low and slow in the oven, many a one-pot meal, and of course, soup. The cast-iron center means they heat evenly and well, while the lighter enamel interior means you don't have to worry about seasoning the pot yourself (and you can see when food starts to burn on the bottom more easily). If you're looking for an intro Dutch oven, $50 is a solid price.
A bench scraping multitasker Ms Wgo Pro Dough Stainless Steel Scraper $7.99 at AmazonSee It
Once upon a time, I did not understand the appeal of the bench scraper. Why not just use your knife to help you move chopped vegetables or herbs from the cutting board to the pan? Turns out, that's an excellent way to dull your knife faster! And a bench scraper can help you pick up so much more, with a lot more control. And of course, it's a great tool for bakers who need to easily cut and, in the case of this bench scraper, measure dough. Trust me, you won't regret this purchase.
The best mini-chopping assistant Hamilton Beach Mini 3-Cup Food Processor $13.99 at Walmart$24.99 Save $11.00 Get Deal
I do not know who I was before I bought a three-cup mini food processor. At first, it 100 percent feels like one of those kitchen tools you'll use once and never again. But after cooking at my parents' one day and watching my mom mince 12 cloves of garlic without batting an eye, I knew I needed one — my hands have not smelled like garlic in months, and it's wonderful. The capacity makes it much less of a heavy lift (literally) than hauling out a regular-size food processor, and it works just as well for making small portions of salsa as it does for dicing veggies.
