Skate Won't Be Playable Offline Says Developer

How-To Geek - Mon, 04/28/2025 - 23:30

Skate developer Full Circle recently confirmed that its upcoming reboot will not include an offline mode. The decision by the dev team stems from the game's design philosophy: both the world and the city of San Vansterdam are intended to be "living, breathing," and part of a "massively multiplayer skateboarding sandbox" that is "always online and always evolving," according to Full Circle’s recent web post.

IBM is going all in on quantum with $150 billion US investment

Mashable - Mon, 04/28/2025 - 19:43

IBM is investing heavily in American manufacturing.

In a statement released Monday, April 28, the chipmaker announced plans to invest more than $150 billion over the next five years in new facilities and projects related to quantum computing production.

SEE ALSO: As AI manufacturing grows, so does the tech's environmental damage

According to analysts speaking with Reuters, the move serves a dual purpose: IBM is angling to dominate the next wave of emerging tech. Additionally, it can be interpreted as a move to shield the company from Trump's ongoing trade wars.

"IBM operates the world's largest fleet of quantum computer systems, and will continue to design, build, and assemble quantum computers in America," the company’s statement reads. "Quantum computing represents one of the biggest technology platform shifts and economic opportunities in decades and will solve problems that today's conventional computers cannot solve."

IBM’s investment aligns neatly with the Trump administration’s push for more local manufacturing, a cause that has become a proving ground for Big Tech loyalty. IBM now joins an expanding roster of companies — including Apple, NVIDIA, TSMC, and Abbott Laboratories — pledging to anchor production efforts in the U.S.

The timing isn’t accidental, either. The announcement comes just a week after IBM lost several government contracts, following budget cuts from the "Department of Government Efficiency." Still, the broader market momentum behind quantum computing seems undeniable.

Tech giants like Google are racing to commercialize quantum breakthroughs, aiming to bring quantum-powered products to market within the next five years.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge leak reveals major specs, including how thin it actually is

Mashable - Mon, 04/28/2025 - 19:41

A new leak has potentially unveiled some information about Samsung's most buzzed about coming Galaxy product.

In January, Samsung revealed its new Samsung Galaxy S25 line of smartphones at the event. However, it snuck in a sneak peek at a specific S25 model that it wasn't releasing with the rest: the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025 was scarce on details on the Galaxy S25 Edge. Samsung did show off the phone at Mobile World Congress 2025 in March, but again, did no provide any news about the smartphone. However, new information by a reputable leaker has provided some potential specs for the device.

According to leaker Evan Bass, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge will be 5.8mm thick and weigh 5.7 ounces. If the leak is accurate, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge would be the company's thinnest non-foldable smartphone ever. It would be thinner than Samsung's previous thinnest smartphone, the Galaxy A8, which came out in 2015 and was only 5.8mm thick.

The other details in the leak are a bit more vague but it does provide additional information for a device we previously knew very little about.

As Mashable previously speculated, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge will have smart AI features like the rest of the S25 line. This smartphone will also be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset.

The device will have a titanium bezel and potentially Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, although Tom's Guide speculates that this could be a typo as the latest Gorilla Glass Ceramic was only recently released last month.

The leak also mentions a "pro-grade" 200MP camera as well as an all-day battery.

South Korean news outlet The Financial News previously reported that Samsung will likely officially announce the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge at an event on May 13, with the smartphone open for pre-orders the next day. It appears Samsung Galaxy fans won't have to wait too much longer to find out more about what appears to be Samsung's thinnest smartphone yet.

Spotify takes on YouTube by paying podcasters for video views

Mashable - Mon, 04/28/2025 - 19:29

So far in 2025, Spotify has paid podcasters more than $100 million, a big payout for creators. Spotify first shared that figure with The New York Times Deal Book, which says the funds have two purposes: to give podcasters a new way to monetize content and to lure both creators and audiences away from YouTube, which dominates video podcasting.

The company first announced its new Spotify Partner Program in November 2024, promising creators "audience-driven payouts" from ads and premium subscribers. At the same time, Spotify also revealed that some subscribers would be able to watch video content "uninterrupted by ads."

Now, we know how much more some popular podcasters are earning. In a press release, Spotify said "total earnings for participating creators [increased] 23% month-over-month from January to February, and 29% month-over-month from February to March."

"Ultimately, Spotify is committed to building a sustainable ecosystem where creators can thrive. This $100 million payout is just one step in that journey. We’ll continue to invest in new tools, resources, and programs to support creators in all formats, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for podcasting on Spotify," the company said in its press release.

It makes sense that Spotify is paying up. Increasingly, people are more interested in watching their podcasts than they are in listening to them, which has a lot of users gravitating toward YouTube rather than Spotify. According to data from Edison Podcast Metrics, weekly podcast listeners are more likely to watch podcasts on YouTube (31 percent) than listen to them on Spotify (27 percent). The New York Times also reports that YouTube's podcasting audience (1 billion) dwarfs Spotify's (170 million).

As podcasts shift to video, Spotify has somehow lost its grip on podcast listeners. However, it still hosts some of the most popular podcasts, including The Joe Rogan Experience, What Now? With Trevor Noah, and The Comment Section with Drew Afualo.

The AirPods Pro are back down to one of their best prices ever

Mashable - Mon, 04/28/2025 - 19:12

Save 32%: As of April 28, the Apple AirPods Pro are down to $169 at Amazon, putting them just $15 away from their absolute lowest price ever. In total, you'll save $80 on these $249 earbuds.

Apple AirPods Pro 2 $169 at Amazon
$249 Save $80 Get Deal

If I had to guess, the advice I've given out most as a shopping reporter who has spent several years covering Apple deals is: don't buy the AirPods Pro for $199.

Yes, technically it's cheaper than their $249 full price, but if you shop at Amazon, Best Buy, or Walmart, you can almost certainly find the noise-cancelling earbuds below their full price — and most often at $199. In fact, according to the price-tracking site camelcamelcamel, these AirPods have only jumped above that price once since July 2024.

Once their price falls below $189, that's when they're worth considering buying on sale. And as of April 28, the AirPods Pro are all the way down to $169, putting them at the lowest price we've seen all month. While they're not quite at their record-low price of $153.99, they're still a very solid value at this price point.

SEE ALSO: A tariff survival guide to buying refurbished smartphones, TVs, and headphones

In general, the AirPods Pro are Mashable's pick for most Apple users, thanks to their quick pairing, excellent sound quality, and impressive ANC. If you've not been a fan of Apple's non-Pro AirPods or EarPods, the silicone ear tips can help you get more comfortable fit and tighter seal for maximizing their noise-cancelling ability. They may not have the battery life as other noise-cancelling earbuds on the market, but they're not so far behind that the limited battery life negates their pros.

iOS 19 rumors: Every feature weve heard of so far

Mashable - Mon, 04/28/2025 - 19:10

We're still not sure exactly when iOS19 will become available to the public, but we're beginning to see lots of rumors about what it might bring. And so far it seems like it could be an exciting new operating system for iPhone users.

It's expected that Apple will reveal the details of iOS19 at its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in early June. Until then, however, we've seen a number of leaks, rumors, and reports detailing what could come. Here's what we've seen so far.

Desktop mode for iPhone

The latest rumored iOS19 feature is a desktop mode (of sorts) for iPhone. Tom's Guide, citing tech leaker Majin Bu, noted that a new feature could soon allow users with USB-C iPhones to connect to an external display, effectively adding a ton of screen space. Tom's Guide wrote that the rumored feature isn't quite a full desktop mode, but more like Apple's Stage Manager, effectively acting as a screen extender.

A drastic new look

Perhaps the biggest change for iOS19 — at least for most users — is the way it'll look. Reports have suggested it could look way different than previous iterations.

Bloomberg reported in March that Apple has been working on “one of the most dramatic software overhauls in the company’s history.” The report suggested that Apple is looking for more design consistency across its products and that the new software will make the iPhone's interface look more like the Vision Pro, with changes to its icons, menus, and system buttons, among other things.

SEE ALSO: iOS 19 could get a drastic new look Live AirPod translation

iOS19 could bring a super handy tool for travelers. It's been reported a new AirPod feature that lets you live translate audio input could come the same time as iOS19. With the potential new feature, AirPods could live translate a foreign language to the user then, through the speaker in the iPhone, translate the user's response for the other person.

SEE ALSO: Apple AirPods may get live translation feature soon, report says AI and Siri

There have been lots of rumors about expanded Apple Intelligence and a revamped, AI-laden Siri with iOS 19. But the reporting has been murky at best. The hope is that AI could help Siri understand things like personal context — pulling up a specific email when asked, for instance — but there hasn't been a clear date of when this could be released. Some reporting has suggested it could come with iOS19's release while others suggested it could be a part of a later update.

While we still have lots to learn about iOS19, the good news is we might only have to wait a couple more months to see the details at WWDC.

Here are our top picks for the best Amazon deals of the day on April 28. If none of these are your cup of tea, stay tuned throughout the week as we make new selections each day.

Our top pick: MacBook Air, 13-inch Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Apple MacBook Air, 13-inch (M4, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $849
$999 Save $150 Get Deal

Just last week, the base model 13-inch MacBook Air with the M4 chip dropped to a record-low $899. As of April 28, however, another $50 price drop has brought it down even more. For a laptop that's been out less than two months, that's a pretty outrageous discount. Dubbed the "best-buy Apple laptop, period," by Mashable's reviewer Stan Schroeder, the M4 MacBook Air is so powerful it's almost overkill. It operates almost silently and packs an improved FaceTime camera, a new colorway, and excellent battery life. And yes, it earned a Mashable Choice Award and a glowing 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Sonos Ace Opens in a new window Credit: Sonos Sonos Ace $349 at Amazon
$449 Save $100 Get Deal

Sonos' first foray into headphones went swimmingly with the Ace. They are aesthetically a 10 out of 10, sound exceptional, offer great spatial audio, and last up to 30 hours per charge with ANC on. While we think the ear cup seal could be tighter, Mashable Deputy Reviews Editor Miller Kern still said she would recommend the Sonos Ace to "true audiophiles who value incredible sound quality above all else." They're regularly $449, but you can snag a pair on sale for just $349 at Amazon as of April 28. That's 22% in savings and matches their best price ever.

Fitbit Sense 2 Opens in a new window Credit: Fitbit Fitbit Sense 2 $199.95 at Amazon
$249.95 Save $50 Get Deal

The Fitbit Sense 2 is the brand's most advanced smartwatch. Not only does it do all of the things you'd want a fitness tracker to do, but it also checks off all the smartwatch boxes as well. It tracks things like sleep, altitude changes, blood oxygen levels, ECG, skin temperature, and more. Plus, it has more than 40 built-in exercise modes to keep up with your training or workout routine, whether you're a runner, cyclist, skier, paddleboarder, or anything in between. It can take calls, navigate Google Maps, tap-to-pay, receive emails, and keep you in the loop without needing your phone. Slash 20% off as of April 28 and get it for just under $200.

Apple M3 iPad Air Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Apple M3 iPad Air, 13-inch (128GB, WiFi) $699 at Amazon
$799 Save $100 Get Deal

"Apple's new iPad Air doesn't feel very new, as the only major difference is the new M3 chip," Mashable's reviewer writes of the M3 iPad Air released last month. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Aside from a more powerful processor that unlocks Apple Intelligence, the only upgrades are pass-through charging is now available, battery life is slightly better, and the optional Magic Keyboard is more advanced. If you already have the M2 iPad Air, there's no need to upgrade. If you're rocking an old iPad, however, it's a worthy tablet — especially when it's on sale for $100 off.

Theragun Mini Opens in a new window Credit: Theragun Theragun Mini $179 at Amazon
$209.99 Save $30.99 Get Deal

While it's not quite down to its lowest price ever, this 15% discount on the Theragun Mini is still worth grabbing. We've tested this tiny massage fun and particularly love its compact and ergonomic design, easy setup, and three powerful speed options. It comes with three scientifically-designed attachments to target specific muscle groups and our reviewer dubbed it "an effective handheld massager for both at-home and on-the-go care."
