Why I meditate while driving
It's one of those March mornings where dark rainclouds keep chasing the sun away. I'd rather not leave my remote work sanctum. But there's a quick errand to run in my car, and my mood brightens at one thought: that the drive will be just long enough for me to do a five-minute breath meditation via my Apple Watch.
That's right — strange as it may sound to some, I meditate while driving, and have done so for years. When I step behind the wheel solo, I don't call a friend or fire up a playlist or a podcast or an audiobook, even though there's invariably one of each I want to do at any given time. Nor do I listen to any kind of voice-guided meditation (which, as I wrote, is very much not for me.)
The breath-guiding I'm hooked on has nothing to do with my smartphone, which is easily the most dangerously distracting device in my car. It is utterly, blissfully sound-free. It's the haptic feedback from the smartwatch on my wrist — the slowly-fading tapping sensation that tells me to breathe in for five seconds, the silence indicating I breathe out for the same length of time — that invests my drive with a surprising sense of peace.
SEE ALSO: No, you don't need a guide to meditateTurns out I'm not the first to discover the soothing power of haptic-based meditation while driving. A 2018 study conducted by Stanford medical school, called "in-car interventions for guided slow breathing," offered a first-of-its kind vibrating seat that helped participants to inhale and exhale by vibrating their whole body, not just their wrists.
All but five of the 24 participants in the study preferred these in-car vibrations to meditative voice guidance. Their Heart Rate Variability (HRV) increased, suggesting they were becoming less stressed. "Slow breathing practices could transform the automobile commute from a depleting, mindless activity into a calming, mindful experience," the Stanford medics concluded.
I'm not about to recommend this to anyone without more on-road study (the Stanford team used simulators in both city and highway modes). Even if this sounds like a fit for you, you should check with your doctor before risking light-headedness by trying a new breathing exercise in an unfamiliar situation. But having run this experiment on myself for years, I believe haptic meditation has made my driving less distracted, and way less road-ragey.
Once I was the guy who headed for the fast lane and got mad at red lights. Now I'm the guy who waves to let you into my lane, or let you cross — and who treats red lights as a golden opportunity to just, y'know, appreciate whatever is happening in the world outside my windshield.
Distracted while driving? Just breathe. Now, if you're the kind of person who associates meditation with distraction — who thinks that floating away or zoning out is an optimal result — car meditation may sound horrifying. But as this series has been saying for years, mindfulness isn't about escaping to somewhere else. It's about tuning in non-judgmentally to the reality all around you in this very moment: a vital skill if you're going to be safe behind the wheel.
And with April being Distracted Driving Month, we'd be remiss if we didn't point out all those widely-used methods to take drivers elsewhere in their minds — music, podcasts, audiobooks, calls — come with evidence that they make us worse drivers.
"Music in every mood reduces reaction time," concluded a 2023 study of studies about driving with music. "Driving and listening to music compete for the driver’s limited cognitive capacity." Listening at a lower volume does seem to lower drivers' speed, but even that raises their heart rates.
There's more mixed data when it comes to voices in your car. One 2018 study done in driving simulators found that participants' reaction times on simple traffic tests were faster while listening to audiobooks, but slower in complex driving situations. A 2024 study found that drivers were "more prone to making errors" when listening to radio conversations — even more so than music.
As for being on the phone, even if it's hands-free, forget about it. We've long known that phone calls make us more distracted. A 2022 meta-analysis of 83 studies concluded that being on a call while driving "negatively affects driving performance, exposing drivers to dangerous traffic situations." If you, like me, have a friend who keeps missing their freeway exits when they're talking to you, know that this is about the least damaging negative result of the chat.
In short, what you're doing behind the wheel matters — and we're all doing something. Distracted driving leads to more than 3,000 deaths a year in the U.S. alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That last meta-analysis also found that in literally any secondary task executed while driving, "the driver's cognitive, manual, visual, and auditory resources are all involved," meaning less attention is paid to the road.
So, go ahead if you wish; transport yourself to other places in your mind while hurtling around in a giant hunk of metal. I'll be over here with the multiple driving anxiety coaches who recommend various breathing exercises to stay calm behind the wheel.
And thanks to the Apple Watch's Breathe feature, where you set the length of your breaths in advance, I don't even have to distract myself by counting the seconds of each breath. My mind is alert, my diaphragm calmly expands and contracts, my foot is ready to tap the brake at any time.
Your move, world beyond the windshield.

The best comedies on Max right now
Want something to tickle your funny bone but don’t want to spend hours perusing your options? Picking a comedy to watch can be tricky, because humor is largely a matter of taste. But worry not.
Whether you’re hankering for a comedy classic or a modern hit, a feel-good crowd-pleaser or a poignant critical darling, a mainstream romp or an outrageous musical, a candy-colored fantasy or a time-travel buddy-comedy, we've got you covered.
Here are the best comedy movies now streaming on Max.
1. Singin' in the Rain Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor dance in rain slickers. Credit: Silver Screen Collection / Moviepix via Getty ImagesCraving something that’ll not only make you laugh but also make you want to get up and dance? Then splash into the stupendous pleasures of this 1952 classic, co-directed by Stanley Donen and Hollywood legend Gene Kelly. The latter stars as a Vaudevillian who has worked his way up from stuntman to silent movie star. As the sound era shakes up the film industry, he hopes to make sweet music with an enchanting ingenue (a beaming Debbie Reynolds). However, his cantankerous leading lady (a ruthlessly silly Jean Hagen) won’t be sidelined without a fight! Full of meta jokes, charming banter, hysterical hijinks, and astonishing song numbers, Singin’ in the Rain is one of the best musical comedies that’s ever been made. Come for the jokes. Stay for the signature dance number that’s as astonishing now as it was decades ago. Then, let the romance of this feel-good film sweep you away. — Kristy Puchko, Entertainment Editor

2. Barbie Margot Robbie is Barbie in "Barbie." Credit: Warner Bros.Frankly, the promotional journey for Barbie was so full of pink, so joyful, so fun, that would have been Kenough. The movie could have been a silly trifle, and we'd likely have been pleased. But writer/director Greta Gerwig brought us the universally heralded coming-of-age comedy Ladybird and then the rapturous reimagining of Little Women. Her Barbie wasn't going to stop at playful. Instead, it parodied the patriarchy with horses, Stallone-inspired fashion, and a rousing dream ballet fueled by an actual banger, "I'm Just Ken."
Margot Robbie was picture-perfect as a Barbie who realizes the world is much bigger than the dreamhouse-dotted Barbie Land. Ryan Gosling snagged the rare comedy Oscar nomination for his delightfully deranged take on the insecure man doll who couldn't cope, and so turned to conquering. (Napoleon relates!) While detractors have argued the film's girl-power messaging is simplistic, it's hard to deny that Gerwig did more with this IP than we could have dreamed. Sure, Barbie is a glossy toy commercial. But it's a glossy toy commercial that not only has something to say, but does so through spectacular filmmaking that folds in eye-popping practical effects, enthralling details, discontinued dolls, and jokes that were way outside the box. From Weird Barbie to that on-point Pride and Prejudice mini-series namedrop, Barbie had us so giddy that we felt like kids again.* — K.P.

3. Dear White People Tessa Thompson and the cast of "Dear White People." Credit: Code Red / Duly Noted / Homegrown / Roadside Attractions / Kobal / Shutterstock.comJustin Simien's breakthrough 2014 hit, Dear White People, looks racial tension in the face and digs in. It's a sharp, funny, and fearless investigation into what it means to be a Black person in America today, shot with a distinct sense of style and structure. Ripping into code-switching, colorism, and more, Dear White People follows multiple students' movements at one Ivy League university — including a student activist (Tessa Thompson) who runs an edgy campus radio show called "Dear White People" — as things escalate, building up to a Halloween party no one will ever forget. — Kristina Grosspietsch, Freelance Contributor

4. 50/50Adam's (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) biggest concern in his late twenties is that his crass best friend (Seth Rogen) doesn't really like Adam's girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard). But it's no big deal — Adam's got his whole future ahead of him! Or so he thinks. When a doctor's visit reveals he has a tumor with a 50 percent survival rate, Adam must confront his mortality, all while he's still learning to be an adult. 50/50 is a sweet and moving dramedy that skillfully mines humor from tragedy. This 2011 hidden gem, which is loosely based on screenwriter Will Reiser's experience with cancer, is a sweet and captivating watch that will make you laugh while you cry. — K.G.

5. Problemista Tilda Swinton and Julio Torres play a compelling odd couple in "Problemista." Credit: A24Is your favorite brand of comedy the bleak, existential kind? Then Julio Torres' Problemista is the surreal and fractured fairy tale for you. Torres (who also wrote and directed the film) stars as Alejandro, an imaginative toy designer trying to make it in New York City. But when he's fired from his job at a cryogenics facility, Alejandro needs to find a new visa sponsor or he'll be deported. Enter Tilda Swinton as Elizabeth, a temperamental, delusional harridan — and the wife of one of Alejandro's former frozen clients. Alejandro must figure out how to manage Elizabeth's ever-changing whims while navigating the labyrinthine U.S. immigration process and keeping his dream alive. — K.G.

6. Lady BirdSaoirse Ronan is completely captivating as the artsy Christine (aka Lady Bird), with dreams bigger than her Sacramento suburb will allow. She's constantly at odds with her mother (Laurie Metcalf) and is struggling to find her path. Will she get into her dream school on the East Coast? Could her family even afford it if she did?
A coming-of-age dramedy about a teenager redefining her relationship with her parents and yearning to leave home, Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird is simply sublime. It's a fantastic encapsulation of adolescent angst, poking fun at the self-seriousness of 17-year-olds while maintaining empathy for even the moodiest of high school crushes (a perfectly cast Timothée Chalamet). — K.G.

7. Modern Times Charlie Chaplin in a dinner scene in "Modern Times." Credit: Hulton Archive / Moviepix via Getty ImagesCharlie Chaplin was a king of comedy in the silent film era, rolling his iconic Little Tramp into such side-splitters as City Lights, Gold Rush, and The Kid. These and many more Chaplin offerings are available on Max. Subscribers can easily look back at how American physical comedy was forged through set pieces silly and sensational. You really can’t go wrong when it comes to Chaplin, but we're highlighting Modern Times because even though it's set in 1936, its humor is truly timeless. Taking on a string of industrial jobs while romancing a charming gamin, Chaplin zips from one zany bit to another with a captivating waddle and a chipper twitch of his mustache, fearlessly throwing himself face-first into the wildest shenanigans. Plus, as this film includes some scenes with sound and dialogue, it's maybe the most accessible introduction to Chaplin's works. — K.P.

8. Everything Everywhere All At OnceWant a movie with a little bit of everything? Then you can't beat the 2023 Oscar winner for Best Picture. Academy Award–winner Michelle Yeoh stars as a disgruntled laundromat owner who's at her wit's end between her obligations as a boss, wife, mother, and daughter. And just as she's braced to deal with a tax auditor with a surly attitude (Academy Award–winner Jamie Lee Curtis), a dashing version of her husband (Academy Award–winner Ke Huy Quan) bursts onto the scene from a parallel universe to loop her into a quest to save all existence. Packed with absolutely bonkers action, outrageous jokes, dizzying style, and performances as silly as they are deeply poignant, The Daniels' Everything Everywhere All at Once is the kind of movie that'll have you laughing, crying, gasping, and maybe even reconsidering your life up to now.* — K.P.
How to watch: Everything Everywhere All at Once is now streaming on Max.
9. Deadpool Ryan Reynolds stars as Deadpool. Credit: Moviestore / Shutterstock.comWhen you look at the lineup of Marvel’s superheroes, Deadpool is not like the others. He's a fourth-wall-breaking, swearing, wisecracking ass who is well aware he's currently in an R-rated movie. Canadian mercenary Wade Wilson undergoes experimental cancer surgery that ends up awakening latent mutant genes. After healing from the surgery, he finds he has newly acquired accelerated healing powers — and he's now covered in growths that he finds grotesque. Shamed by his new appearance, Wade hides away from his former life, as well as his former love, Vanessa (played by a radiant Morena Baccarin). Until he can find a cure, he is no longer Wade Wilson. He is Deadpool.
Though Deadpool’s main power is supposedly regeneration, his true superpower is being played by Ryan Reynolds. The motor-mouthed merc is peak Reynolds, who has been instrumental in getting the Deadpool franchise off the ground since the beginning. No one else has the swagger for this offbeat, meta, and gleefully violent take on the superhero flick! — K.G.

10. UnpregnantMany excellent films about the hardships this country forces women to undergo in order to receive an abortion are fittingly stirring and sobering. 2020's Unpregnant, on the other hand, is a ridiculous road trip/buddy comedy about abortion that seems like it shouldn't work, but it does. And we love it!
Haley Lu Richardson (White Lotus) is Veronica, an over-achieving 17-year-old in Missouri who needs a “procedure.” But the closest place a minor can get an abortion without parental consent (and Veronica's parents are very religious) is over a thousand miles away in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She seeks the help of her former best friend, high school misfit Bailey (Barbie Ferreira), for a ride. A charming look on modern female friendship, a wacky road trip misadventure, and a thoughtful take on reproductive rights, all wrapped into one! And don't miss an unexpectedly laugh-out-loud cameo from Giancarlo Esposito. — K.G.

11. Dicks: The Musical The ensemble cast of "Dicks: The Musical" looks down. Credit: Justin Lubin / A24Sometimes a movie comes along that is so completely outrageous that it feels like a miracle it exists at all. Dicks: The Musical is such a treasure. Writers/actors/homosexuals Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson translated Fucking Identical Twins, a two-man comedy musical once staged in the basement of a Gristedes, into a movie musical that is not only beyond bonkers but also features such big stars as Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Megan Thee Stallion.
Imagine The Parent Trap as a scorching satire of queer culture and homophobic fears, and you'll get some idea of what's in store. It's not just musical numbers about the joys of putting alpha males in their place, or the madcap chaos of Mullally's ad-libs, or even national treasure Lane spitting ham at his beloved Sewer Boys. It's also got Bowen Yang as God, and a finale number that is as joyous as it is absolutely iconoclastic. In a year peppered with superb comedies, nothing made us laugh as hard or loud or long as Dicks: The Musical.* — K.P.
How to watch: Dicks: The Musical is now streaming on Max.
12. Keanu Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele co-star in "Keanu." Credit: Warner Bros / Everett / Shutterstock.comLong before Jordan Peele became Hollywood's foremost horror auteur, he was doing ridiculous and boundary-pushing comedy alongside Keegan-Michael Key. Their magnum opus? 2016's absurd buddy action/adventure Keanu. Rell and Clarence are normal, if somewhat boring, cousins who find themselves embroiled in a drug-smuggling scheme when Rell's kitten, Keanu, goes missing. When Rell adopted the little ball of fur, he had no idea Keanu previously belonged to a cartel boss. Now that it seems Keanu has been cat-napped, Clarence and Rell will stop at nothing to get him back. Keanu is a fun, fast-paced, and ludicrous ride starring two infectiously watchable comedians at the top of their game — and a criminally cute kitten! — K.G.
How to watch: Keanu is streaming on Max.
13. Tampopo "Tampopo" is all about the love of food. Credit: Apic / Moviepix via Getty ImagesA spirited spoof tipping its hat to the Spaghetti Western, this 1985 Japanese comedy was promoted as a "ramen Western." Its central story is about a cowboy hat-wearing truck driver (Tsutomu Yamazaki) who comes across a humble ramen shop where the food is truly "terrible." Damsel-in-distress Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) begs this hardened hero to save her family's business by teaching her to do right by ramen. So of course, he rounds up a posse to perfect her recipe. Full of physical comedy, giddy silliness, quirky characters, and charming performances, this film is a delectable delight. But writer/director Jûzô Itami brings even more to the table, spicing up this culinary tale with fantastical vignettes about the love of food. Though often ridiculous — and sometimes salacious — none of the laughs are lost in translation. But be warned: This funny film will make you hungry. The loving shots of ramen and the various speeches about its richness and wonders are ruthlessly mouth-watering. Maybe order dinner before digging in. — K.P.

14. Bridget Jones's Diary Renée Zellweger stars as Bridget Jones. Credit: Alex Bailey / Miramax / Universal / Kobal / Shutterstock.comBridget Jones's Diary is a perfect movie, and we're not hearing any opinions to the contrary, thank you! Renée Zellweger gained 20 pounds to snag the role of Bridget, already a beloved character in the UK thanks to Helen Fielding's wildly popular Bridget Jones novels. The Brits were in an uproar about an American being cast as in a role that was archetypally British, but Zellweger's performance (and accent!) were so spot-on, the complaints quickly gave way to rave reviews.
The start of a film franchise and the best movie of the lot, Bridget Jones’s Diary introduces us to an ordinary thirtysomething woman in London who, after turning 32 alone, vows to lose weight, quit smoking, stop drinking, and find love. Enter Hugh Grant as Bridget's preternaturally charming boss, and, because this is a Pride and Prejudice adaptation, Colin Firth as the man who couldn't seem more wrong for Bridget (his name is literally Mr. Darcy!!!). Even if you know where this funny and grounded rom-com is going, you're sure to have a blast along the way. — K.G.

15. Mamma Mia: The Movie! Is there a more fun movie than Mamma Mia? We're not sure there is! Adapted in 2008 from the insanely popular jukebox stage musical, Mamma Mia is a bubbly, pre-wedding romp stuffed with ABBA songs and storied actors who may or may not have been drunk throughout the entire course of filming. This is the height of cinema, people!
Amanda Seyfried is enchanting as Sophie, a young bride-to-be who finds her mother's journal from the year she was conceived and discovers three possible candidates for her birth father. Does she talk to her mom (a glowing Meryl Streep) about this? No! She invites them all to her wedding on the remote Greek island where she and her mom live, in the hopes she'll figure out which is her biological father before it's time to walk down the aisle.
Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, and Christine Baranski fill out the charismatic cast of this most spectacularly cheerful film, guaranteed to leave you smiling. — K.G.

16. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Michael Cera fall in love in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." Credit: Big Talk Productions / Kobal / Shutterstock, comA romantic comedy/action/comic book/adventure mashup, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a simply fantastic movie through and through. More than a decade after its release, a fun, new rewatching bonus is seeing current Hollywood heavyweights (Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Kieran Culkin, and more) having fun and being silly at the start of their careers. These stars enjoyed working on the film so much, they all agreed to come back for Netflix's 2023 animated reimagining, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
Michael Cera is iconic as the soft-spoken Scott Pilgrim, a bass player in an unsuccessful indie band who becomes enamored with delivery girl Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Unfortunately for Scott, to date Ramona, he’ll have to defeat her seven evil exes first! Uh oh! Good thing this movie also pulls some of its visual style from video games! That’s right, Scott Pilgrim has it all! — K.G.

17. Shazam!Billy Batson is a 14-year-old living in a group home who can’t seem to stay out of trouble. But when he’s mysteriously transported to a mythical cave called the Rock of Eternity, a wizard grants him the power to transform into Shazam, an adult superhero. So what would a 14-year-old do if he could instantly look like a grown-up and had superstrength? Make viral videos, of course!
Shazam! is a fun and welcome twist on the classic superhero flick. Zachary Levi is pitch-perfect as a 14-year-old in an adult’s body, and Mark Strong is deliciously evil as the villain trying to steal Shazam’s powers for himself.* — K.G.
How to watch: Shazam! is now streaming on Max.
18. The HangoverIf you're looking for comedy of the dude variety, no film franchise is as bro-y, as raunchy, or as crude as The Hangover. In this archetypal 2000s party flick, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis are taking Justin Bartha out for an epic Las Vegas bachelor party two days before his wedding. And when they wake up the next morning in a destroyed hotel room that is missing the groom-to-be but now contains a tiger (!!!), they must piece together the clues of their insane, blacked-out night to find Bartha and save his wedding. The Hangover is an adrenaline comedy, mixing gross-out humor with dumb stunts, car chases, and an excellent Mike Tyson cameo.

19. Beetlejuice BeetlejuiceComing out 36 years since Tim Burton's Beetlejuice first delighted audiences with is madcap and macabre tale of the "ghost with the most," this sequel did what seemed impossible: It was a hell of a good time! Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara reprise their roles as Beetlejuice, his could-have-been child bride Lydia Deetz, and her savagely chic stepmother Delia. Jenna Ortega joins the cast as Lydia's rebellious daughter Astrid, whose surprise trip to the Netherworld sends the Deetzes into an uneasy alliance with their old enemy.
SEE ALSO: 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' star Winona Ryder reveals Lydia Deetz's full character arc leading up to the sequelFilled with Burton's classically creepy yet enchanting character designs, oddball musical numbers, and visual gags that had audiences drop-jawed in demented glee, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a sequel true to the spirit of the original, while making fresh fun with freaky new characters, played by Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Arthur Conti. Don't miss the fun. — K.P.

20. WonkaA prequel to 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory seemed an idea so preposterously cash-grabby that fans of the Gene Wilder-fronted original and Roald Dahl's children's books scoffed ahead of Wonka's release. Even the trailer got naysayers tittering about Timothée Chalamet's performance. But once this movie musical finally was shown to critics, it was determined sweet, charmingly, and scrumdiddlyumptious!
Chalamet stars as the famous chocolatier years before his factory was built. A pauper with a case of curious ingredients and a dream to make divine candy, Wonka instantly earns the ire of a nefarious chocolate cartel and a ruthless con artist played by Academy Award winner Olivia Colman. But with a bit of ingenuity, the help of his motley crew of friends, and some pure imagination, Wonka will manifest a sweet life. Watching it happen, and listening to the jaunty tunes along the way, is a pure pleasure. But we'd expect nothing else from Paddington 1&2 writers Paul King and Simon Farnaby. — K.P.

Switch 2 Nintendo Direct livestream today: See it live
Back in January, Nintendo did us all a solid and told us that the Switch 2 is real and we would hear more about it soon. "Soon" is now.
Nintendo is holding a Nintendo Direct livestream at 9 a.m. ET on Wednesday, April 2 to tell us (presumably) everything we want to know about Switch 2. You will be able to watch it live on Nintendo's YouTube channel. Unfortunately, Nintendo hasn't yet said how long the Direct will be, as it generally does when announcing these things. Given that Nintendo Directs are usually about 40 minutes long when there isn't a new console to show, one could reasonably assume that this one will be longer than that.
SEE ALSO: Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup: Every game we predict will be available at launchAs for what to expect from the Switch 2 Direct, all we can do is speculate. It would be shocking if Nintendo didn't at least reveal the price and release date of the console during this stream. There will also be a bunch of trailers for upcoming Switch 2 games, as well as some idea of which ones will be available at launch.
Aside from the new Mario Kart title that was shown briefly during the Switch 2 reveal video in January, though, it's nearly impossible to say what else will be shown during this Direct.
Either way, the time is almost upon us. Get ready, folks.
MacOS Sequoia 15.4 is available. 3 new features to know about
The macOS Sequoia 15.4 update has arrived, bringing a few noteworthy features to the Mac operating system.
This is the fourth major update since macOS Sequoia launched last September. Previous macOS Sequoia updates brought Apple Intelligence features like ChatGPT support, AI-generated images and editing with Image Playground, an updated Siri, AI-powered Writing Tools, and AI-generated emoji called Genmoji. Additionally, Apple updated the Photos, Safari, and the Weather app and introduced notification summaries in Messages and Mail.
This update builds on some of these existing features and introduces some new stuff too (insert "Face with Bags Under Eyes" emoji). Let's dive in on new macOS Sequoia 15.4 features to know about.
Mail app redesignOne of the features Apple highlighted with the macOS Sequoia 15.4 update is the redesigned Mail app, which was already deployed to the iPhone with iOS 18.2. Now, emails are automatically sorted into four categories: Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. Sorting your emails this way is designed to help users "prioritize the most important messages," according to the Apple support page. It also makes it super easy to batch delete the unimportant emails.
If you don't like the new look, you can always revert back to the traditional interface by disabling the automated mail categorization.
Some minor Apple Intelligence updatesIt wouldn't be a macOS Sequoia update without some Apple Intelligence news. But this time around, the updates are pretty minor. The ability to make those Memory movies in the Photos app on an iPhone is now available on Macs too. And in Image Playground, you can now choose a "Sketch" style option in addition to Animation and Illustration styles.
Lastly, with the macOS Sequoia 15.4 update, Apple Intelligence has been expanded to new languages: French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (simplified).
New emojiThe update we're most excited about is the introduction of eight new emoji, which are also available on iPhones with the iOS 18.4 update.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.Feast your eyes upon these beauties:
Face with Bags Under Eyes
Fingerprint
Splatter
Root vegetable
Leafless tree
Harp
Shovel
The Sark flag
We have a feeling Face with Bags Under Eyes is going to get a lot of use.
It's almost been a year since Apple announced macOS Sequoia, which means the next generation of macOS is right around the corner at WWDC on June 9. We'll be keeping our eyes peeled for what's rumored to come next.

I don’t usually look twice at open-box gear unless I’m feeling brave or broke. But $89.99 for Sony’s PULSE Elite wireless headset at Best Buy? That’s a risk I’m more than willing to take. Brand new, this thing goes for $149.99. For $60 less, I’ll deal with a few cosmetic scuffs if it still sounds like a dream and plays nice with my PS5.
I think what makes this headset a standout is the combo of planar magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link tech. It delivers that low-latency, high-fidelity audio that makes every game sound like it was mixed in a studio instead of a broom closet. Explosions rumble, footsteps whisper, and every in-game insult hits just a bit harder. It’s immersive in the best, most distracting way.

Not that I want to take calls, but the option’s there.

Drivers: Planar magnetic
Wireless tech: PlayStation Link
Microphone: Retractable, AI-powered noise rejection
Connectivity: Bluetooth, dual device
Battery life: Up to 30 hours
Quick charge: 10 minutes for 2 hours
Accessories: Charging hanger included (condition-dependent)
Comfort: Plush ear cups, headband strap suspension
Battery life is a non-issue. It lasts up to 30 hours, and if you forget to charge it (which I always do), a 10-minute quick charge gives you two hours of juice. Also, the included charging hanger keeps it off your desk and looking less like an e-waste graveyard.
It’s technically listed as “Fair” condition, so yeah, it might have a couple dents or be missing an accessory. But the core experience? Still very much intact. And for under 90 bucks, I think it’s a gamble that pays off. Especially if you’ve been eyeing a premium headset without the premium price.
I want the UGREEN Nexode 200W power bank for every trip I take—and it’s $50 off today
SAVE $50: As of April 2, UGREEN Nexode 25000mAh 200W power bank is available for $79.99 at Amazon. That’s a 38 percent discount from its regular price of $129.99.
Opens in a new window Credit: UGREEN UGREEN Nexode 25000mAh 200W $79.99 at Amazon$129.99 Save $50.00 Get Deal
I don’t typically get excited about battery packs, but the UGREEN Nexode is one of those rare exceptions. It’s not just that it has 200 watts of fast charging power or that it holds 25000mAh of juice. It’s that it makes every other power bank I own feel like a sad pocket warmer in comparison. And right now, it’s on sale for $79.99 at Amazon. That’s $50 off. Which, for something this functional and overachieving, feels like robbery. Again, legal.
I think what sold me was the TFT smart display. It shows battery percentage, output, input, voltage, current—basically everything you need. Compared to most LCD readouts, this one actually looks nice and, dare I say, modern.
SEE ALSO: Apple announces WWDC 2025 datesFunctionally, it’s a beast. I’ve used it to charge my MacBook Pro, my phone, and a tablet all at the same time. No sparks, no overheating, no tantrums. It just works. The 200W output is overkill in the best way. If you travel for work, shoot video, edit on the go, or just live with someone who never charges their phone, this thing is a dream.
Price: $79.99 $129.99
Retailer: Amazon
Battery capacity: 25000mAh
Output: Up to 200W
Ports: 2 USB-C, 1 USB-A
Special features: TFT smart display, PD 3.1 fast charging, real-time power data
Charging capacity: iPhone 15 up to 5.2 times
Color: Black
Durability: Retains 80 percent capacity after 1000 cycles
Safety: Real-time temperature monitoring and fast heat dissipation
It’s also surprisingly durable. Even after a thousand charging cycles, it keeps over 80 percent of its original capacity. It charges quickly, cools itself efficiently, and doesn’t scream for attention with flashing lights or obnoxious branding.
For long travel days, power outages, or just a backup that can actually do more than revive a dying phone once, this is the one I’d recommend. Especially while it’s still under 80 bucks.
I think $36 for Sony’s WH-CH520 headphones is a no-brainer—and my wallet agrees
SAVE $23: As of April 2, Sony WH-CH520 wireless headphones are on sale for $36 at Amazon. That’s $23 off the usual $59.99 price — about a 40% discount.
Opens in a new window Credit: Sony Sony WH-CH520 wireless headphones $36 at Amazon$59.99 Save $23.99 Get Deal
I picked up Sony WH-CH520 headphones because I was tired of babying my battery-drained earbuds. For $36, I figured if they even lasted a week of commuting, I’d call it a win. Turns out, these things can go for 50 hours on a single charge, which is more stamina than I can claim on most weekdays.
They’re not flashy, they’re not fancy, but they do the job without complaining. The sound quality is what you’d expect from Sony: reliable, clean, and fully adjustable through the brand’s app if you feel like messing with EQ settings. I didn’t, because I like things that work out of the box, and these did.
SEE ALSO: Apple announces WWDC 2025 datesI’ve worn them for a full day of work and they didn’t pinch or press. Lightweight is putting it mildly. They feel like a whisper on your head, which I didn’t know I wanted from headphones until I had it. They also fold flat, which makes tossing them into a bag feel less like Tetris and more like a casual flex.
Price: $36 $59.99
Retailer: Amazon
Ear placement: On-ear
Form factor: On-ear
Battery life: Up to 50 hours
Charging: USB-C
Bluetooth: Yes, with multipoint connection
Microphone: Built-in
Color: Black
App support: Sony Headphones Connect
Extra features: DSEE audio enhancement, Fast Pair, Swift Pair
The fact that they pair to two devices at once is a blessing. I can swap between Zoom calls and my phone without pausing to unpair or re-pair. I’m sure there are more expensive headphones that do this, but I don’t need them. I just need these.
For anyone who wants a budget pair to leave in their work bag, keep by the couch, or survive travel without tears, this is the kind of deal that makes you feel like you’re getting away with something. At $36, I think it’s hard to justify not getting them.
Waltz and staff reportedly used Gmail for official U.S. government business, raising security issues
U.S. security officials have reportedly been using their personal Gmail accounts to conduct government business — including sharing sensitive information about military positions. And yes, national security advisor and Signalgate protagonist Michael Waltz was involved.
If we could please go a full five business days without discovering a new breach of tech security by the Trump administration, that would be great.
SEE ALSO: U.S. security officials' passwords found online, including people in Signal chatThe Washington Post reports that members of the U.S. National Security Council (NSC) used Google's email service Gmail to correspond with the official email accounts of colleagues from other federal agencies. As such, potentially sensitive government information has ended up in their personal Gmail inboxes, which are much less secure than official federal communication channels.
Specifically, The Washington Post reports that Waltz had work documents and information on his schedule sent to his Gmail account. This alone is already a questionable security practice. However, a senior aide to Waltz also allegedly used Gmail to share more sensitive information, The Washington Post reporting that it viewed emails involving "highly technical conversations with colleagues at other government agencies involving sensitive military positions and powerful weapons systems relating to an ongoing conflict."
As highlighted by the Signal chat room scandal revealed last Monday, keeping military plans under wraps is a critical security issue. Depending on the information being discussed, officials more typically share sensitive information either in person or on the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet), the U.S. government's secured computer network system. Discussing U.S. military positions via Gmail is not a great security practice.
While schedule information may not be as critically sensitive as detailed plans for imminent international military operations, the proper handling of such data is a security concern as well. It isn't difficult to imagine that bad actors could cause significant harm were they to know where and when U.S. national security officials plan to be.
Unsurprisingly, the NSC has refuted The Washington Post's report. Though NSC spokesman Brian Hughes acknowledged that Waltz might have occasionally received work-related information to his personal account, he claimed that the national security advisor copies in his government email so that it's on the official federal records. Of course, this doesn't fix information being in his personal inbox in the first place.
"Waltz didn’t and wouldn’t send classified information on an open account," Hughes told The Washington Post.
Despite the NSC's statement, this is far from the first time Waltz's digital security habits have been called into question. This report is just the latest in a string of tech security breaches by the Trump administration revealed within the past week, all of which involved the national security advisor. Further, sources reportedly told The Washington Post that Waltz was known to copy and paste information directly from his schedule into Signal.
Waltz was a central figure in the Signal chat room scandal, having been the one to add The Atlantic's editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg to the group chat in which U.S. officials were planning to bomb Yemen. Later that week, Waltz was among several officials involved in the chat whose private contact details and passwords were found online. His Venmo contact list was also discovered in the wake of Signalgate, revealing a list of over 300 of Waltz's associates.
In light of this previous insight into Waltz's digital habits and security, these new allegations regarding his Gmail usage aren't entirely surprising.
Even so, it doesn't seem as though Waltz is facing any serious consequences for his arguably lax digital security standards. The White House has stood by Waltz amidst the security scandals, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that the "case has been closed" regarding Signalgate. President Donald Trump further said that he didn't think Waltz needed to apologise, and that he believes the national security advisor is "doing his best."
Hurdle hints and answers for April 2, 2025
If you like playing daily word games like Wordle, then Hurdle is a great game to add to your routine.
There are five rounds to the game. The first round sees you trying to guess the word, with correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters shown in each guess. If you guess the correct answer, it'll take you to the next hurdle, providing the answer to the last hurdle as your first guess. This can give you several clues or none, depending on the words. For the final hurdle, every correct answer from previous hurdles is shown, with correct and misplaced letters clearly shown.
An important note is that the number of times a letter is highlighted from previous guesses does necessarily indicate the number of times that letter appears in the final hurdle.
If you find yourself stuck at any step of today's Hurdle, don't worry! We have you covered.

Each month you get coffee beans and a postcard from different countries, so you get to try beans you can't get from your grocery store. 4 wild ways ChatGPT image generation is being used now that its free
ChatGPT's image generation tool rolled out to free users this week — which means pretty much everyone can now use OpenAI's tool to create images.
There are, obviously, endless things you can do with the tool. It all comes down to the prompts you feed into ChatGPT. The new image generator, part of ChatGPT's 4o model, is apparently quite impressive. Folks have been playing around with ways to use the image generator, but here are four wild use cases we've seen thus far.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. ReceiptsThis one, well, doesn't seem great. As TechCrunch reported, users online have been using ChatGPT to create real-looking receipts. At face value, that doesn't seem too wild — but consider all the potential for fraud or scams. You can certainly imagine scammers trying to get reimbursed for things that didn't buy.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. Design ideasThis use case is certainly less harmful than fake receipts: ChatGPT could help you design your home. Tech journalist Kevin Roose posted an example. He took screenshots of a bunch of furniture and had ChatGPT compose those images into a room design. That could prove to be a helpful tool in designing your home — and saving you the trouble of buying a couch that won't look good.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. AdvertisementsLots of folks online have posted examples of using ChatGPT's image generation tool to create ads. In general — like most AI — the ads typically copy the style of real ads. But they do look pretty compelling.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. AnimationYou can turn pretty much anything into animation with ChatGPT's image creation. X user @BennettWaisbren, for instance, posted Severance characters in different animation styles.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. With all users now having access to ChatGPT's image tool, there will likely be lots of new use cases to come. And, as always, be careful out there and look out for bad actors creating AI images.
20+ worthwhile TV deals that stuck around after Amazons Big Spring Sale
UPDATE: Apr. 1, 2025, 12:00 p.m. EDT This post has been updated with the TV deals still live the day after Amazon's Big Spring Sale ended.

Another solid TV deal window sprouts in the spring — this is when the previous year's models often go on sale to make room for 2025 TVs finally hitting shelves.
For those eyeing a new flat screen on the cheaper side, the leftover pickings from Amazon's Big Spring Sale are still hot. The event officially ran from March 25 to 31, with several new record-low sale prices popping up — and sticking around on the first day of April.
They're in line with the types of TV deals we usually see from Amazon: noteworthy discounts on all sizes of LED and QLED models from solid budget-friendly brands like TCL and Hisense, plus the expected Fire TV selection. (Granted, Amazon does have a few deals on recent LG and Samsung options peppered in there.)
SEE ALSO: What's new to streaming this week? (March 28, 2025)We're tracking all of the worthwhile Amazon TV deals still live below, organized by size and then by price. All TVs chosen below have 4K resolution and LED backlighting at the least. If any model bumps up to 8K resolution or QLED or OLED lighting, we'll note it specifically. Deals with a 🔥 next to them have dropped to record-low prices.

Any old living room TV that hasn't been upgraded to QLED yet should be scared right now — it doesn't stand a chance against a 65-inch QLED on sale for less than $400. It'll get noticeably brighter and more colorful than regular LED because of its use of quantum dots, or an extra layer of nanoparticles between the screen and LED panel.
This 65-inch version of TCL's lower-tier Q6 QLED is sitting at a new record-low price at Amazon, and it's likely the cheapest 65-inch QLED you'll find until Prime Day in July. For some perspective, the 2023 version of the 65-inch Q6 was on sale for $498 during last year's Big Spring Sale.
