A futuristic polar station is set to make history in the Arctic
The North Pole is the fastest-warming area of our planet. Yet, we know so little about the local ecosystems, the way they interact with the climate, and how global warming is impacting them. The French Tara Ocean Foundation wants to change that by deploying a spaceship-shaped station in the Central Arctic. The goal is to study the North Pole's ecosystem to document and better understand its relationship to the climate, and how the rising temperatures may change this vulnerable area.
NASA is watching an exoplanet shrink under a tremendous force
Astronomers have taken a close look at one of the youngest known exoplanets and found it's on the receiving end of relentless brutality.
This giant baby world, TOI 1227b, is about the size of Jupiter but much lighter — more like a puffed-up version of Neptune, about 330 light-years from Earth. But the distant planet likely won't stay that size for long, because the star that birthed it is blasting it with X-rays, causing it to puff up and blow away.
The punishing radiation appears to be causing the planet to shed its atmosphere at a rate of at least 1 trillion grams per second, according to a new study involving NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. That's like a full Earth disappearing into space every two centuries.
The findings, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, offer a rare window into what planets look like in their infancy — and how they evolve amid the violence perpetrated by their stars. This planet's atmosphere simply can't withstand that kind of beating, said Attila Varga, a doctoral student at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.
"It’s almost unfathomable to imagine what is happening to this planet," said Varga, who led the research, in a statement.
SEE ALSO: Scientists just expanded the search for rocky alien worlds with air NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory studied the radiation from a red dwarf star bombarding a young exoplanet. Credit: NASA / CXC / J. Vaughan illustrationThe number of confirmed exoplanets — planets that don't orbit the sun — has tipped 5,900, according to NASA, with thousands of additional candidates under review.
Red dwarf stars, sometimes referred to as M-type stars, are the most common stars within the Milky Way, yet nobody knows whether planets orbiting them can hold onto atmospheres. TOI 1227b, just 8 million years old, is one such world orbiting this kind of star.
Most astronomers agree that detecting atmospheres is crucial in the search for habitable worlds. NASA has playfully called Earth's own atmosphere its "security blanket": Without it, the type of life flourishing here wouldn't exist. This cocoon holds oxygen in the air and filters out harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, all while keeping our world warm. Furthermore, it creates pressure that allows liquid water to pool on the surface.
The James Webb Space Telescope, a collaboration of NASA and its European and Canadian counterparts, is embarking on a massive study of rocky worlds outside the solar system, specifically to learn whether worlds orbiting near cool red dwarf stars could have air. The campaign, first reported by Mashable, will zero in on a dozen nearby-ish exoplanets.
The new observations of TOI 1227b have revealed that its star is essentially boiling off the baby planet's atmosphere. It's so close to its star — closer than Mercury is to the sun — that it’s exposed to nonstop radiation. Based on simulations, the researchers estimate the planet could lose more than 10 percent of its total mass over the next billion years.
That’s equivalent to two Earths’ worth of material, gone with the stellar wind, whittling it down to perhaps a super-Earth. This process might help explain why astronomers have noticed a noticeable lack of midsize planets, between 1.5 and two times Earth’s size. It’s possible that some planets in this range lost their atmospheres due to radiation.
"A crucial part of understanding planets outside our solar system is to account for high-energy radiation like X-rays that they’re receiving,” said co-author Joel Kastner in a statement. "We think this planet is puffed up, or inflated, in large part as a result of the ongoing assault of X-rays from the star."
For TOI 1227 b, the future looks bleak. The planet is likely too hot and battered to ever host life. And as the abuse from its star continues, this world is ever more likely to shrivel into a barren rock. Future Webb telescope studies may shed light on what exactly TOI 1227b’s air is made of before it's decimated.

David Dastmalchian teases what to expect from his Dexter: Resurrection serial killer
David Dastmalchian is no stranger to playing serial killers, from Kyle Slade in Syfy's 12 Monkeys series to real-life murderer Albert DeSalvo in Boston Strangler. But according to Dastmalchian, his new role in Showtime's Dexter: Resurrection "is the most fun I've ever gotten to have portraying a serial killer."
In an episode of Mashable's Say More interview series, Dastmalchian teased what Dexter: Resurrection viewers could expect from his murderous character, Gareth.

"I don't know if you're a zodiac person or if you're into astrology, but Gemini is all about duality, and [Gareth] murders people in a very specific way — sometimes multiple people in a specific way, and it's rather gruesome and it's rather horrific."

Hall) will face off against in Dexter: Resurrection, a list that also includes characters played by Peter Dinklage and Uma Thurman. But according to Dastmalchian, there are a few things that separate Gareth from the serial-killing crowd.
"I'm very proud to say that Gareth is the number one most wanted FBI murderer, and is the first person that's going to have a power — I'll call it a secret power — that will make life very challenging for Dexter Morgan in a way that hasn't happened on the show before," Dastmalchian said.
He continued: "For me, it was this great acting challenge because — it's a bit of a spoiler that I don't want to give away. But when you tune in and you get to the point where you realize what is actually going on with Gareth, I like to think that your mind might be blown."

Sunday Best review: Sacha Jenkins boldly places Ed Sullivan in the Civil Rights Movement
When documentary filmmaker Sacha Jenkins passed away in May of this year, he left a formidable legacy.
Jenkins, a multihyphenate who started out as a zine creator and co-founder of Ego Trip magazine, found considerable success in the film space, directing documentaries surveying Black music's landmark figures in Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men, Louis Armstrong's Black & Blues, All Up in the Biz, and Bitchin': The Sound and Fury of Rick James.
It's curious then that his final film, Sunday Best, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2023, would be about a white man.
Sunday Best is a tightly structured and endlessly soulful biographical narrative about variety show host Ed Sullivan, the man whose stage introduced America to the newest and brightest sounds in music, from 1948 through 1971. Looking beyond Sullivan's well-known legacy, Jenkins' film posits Sullivan as a racial revolutionary who supported Black artists like Harry Belafonte, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and more, long before seeing Black faces on the relatively new medium of television was normalized. Without Sullivan, as this poppy and politically simple film claims, our everyday and musical world would be far different today.
How does Sunday Best dress to impress? Credit: Courtesy of NetflixBeginning on a laudatory note, the first 10 minutes of Sunday Best is filled with testimonials by industry titans on Sullivan's importance. The film's opening credits features celebrities like Ringo Starr, Wanda Sykes, Keegan-Michael Key, Bruce Springsteen, and Ice-T expressing their admiration for the late-night host. The film's talking heads, which include Smokey Robinson and Berry Gordy, elaborate further on how Sullivan broke many of television's earliest rules, particularly on race. When television first started, claims the documentary, the only Black faces viewers could hope to see was on Amos 'n' Andy. As Gordy shares, when The Ed Sullivan Show premiered on Sunday, June 20, 1948, "Everything changed."
Jenkins tells us how Sullivan altered the entertainment industry in the host's own words. Intertitles explain that for Sunday Best, Jenkins leaned on Respeecher's AI tech to recreate Sullivan's voice to narrate the columns, articles, and letters Sullivan wrote during his life. It has the effect of a kind of melodious uncanny valley, sounding like an impression of Sullivan rather than the man himself.
Still, after the first 10 minutes, the film performs a nifty musical trick that becomes its calling card. A clip of an 11-year-old Toni Harper singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" on Sullivan's show sets the mood, while Jenkins and editors Billy McMillin and Monique Zavistovski allow the song to play out as Sullivan's voice provides his biographical details. He was born in Harlem in 1901, back when Harlem was inhabited by Jewish and Irish people. His twin brother died when he was two years old. His father taught him to respect people, no matter their background. By combining the show's classic performances — the film combed through the series' 10,000 musical numbers — with Sullivan's recollections, Jenkins kills two birds at once: He keeps the film at its tight 80 minutes in length without shorting on any important information or music.
The percussive score by Ryan "Bullet" Shields also provides an easeful counterbalance to the barrage of biographical notes. As the music shuffles, we learn that Sullivan played in an integrated baseball league in high school and began his career as a sports writer. In 1929, when NYU football decided to sit their Black player to appease the segregationist policy of their opponent the University of Georgia, Sullivan wrote an article for the New York Evening Graphic denouncing the school's decision. In the 1930s, when Sullivan switched from the sports beat to covering Broadway, he became emcee of the Harvest Moon Ball, which hosted Black vaudeville performers. All of these anecdotes are combined to demonstrate how Sullivan seemed far ahead of the era's other white men.
Sunday Best is a hit parade. Credit: Courtesy of NetflixJenkins spends much of Sunday Best matching the rise of Sullivan's show with the brewing racial tensions concurrently happening. When Sullivan began bringing vaudevillian acts like Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Lena Horne, and Pearl Bailey onto television, he did so knowing advertisers were skittish about losing Southern viewers. By 1952, Georgia Governor Herman Talmadge began demanding that television remain segregated. And though Talmadge never directly commented on Sullivan, the film does position the governor's viewpoint, via a newspaper headline reading "Talmadge Hits TV 'Offense' to South on Race," as being diametrically opposite to the TV host.
For every moment in history, Jenkins has a hit to accompany it. Through various anecdotes, we learn that Sullivan remained loyal to Harry Belafonte, even when the latter was blacklisted for being a communist. When the film touches upon racial violence in the South, it follows those events, ironically, with Nat King Cole and Tony Martin dueting to "On the Sunny Side of the Street." When it comes time to talk about the March on Washington, the film precedes it with Mahalia Jackson, MLK's favorite singer, performing "Give Me That Old Time Religion."
By the time Jenkins begins leaning into Motown, you get the sense that he wants to draw a direct line from Sullivan to the studio called Hitsville USA. In the film, Smokey Robinson expresses his belief that Motown's music broke down barriers and put people together. Berry Gordy more nakedly expresses how he wanted his artists to crossover into (white) America.
Sunday Best is historically simplistic. Credit: Courtesy of NetflixIn that regard, the title Sunday Best has a double-edged meaning. The phrase, of course, refers to putting on your finest clothes for church. It's telling, then, that Gordy recalls not putting the Black faces of his artists on early Motown records for fear they would turn off white listeners. That impulse suggests a second desire for his Black artists to present themselves in a nonthreatening manner to appeal to white audiences.
It's why Sunday Best could easily be read as an integrationist film. The film flatly sees racial progress as linear and as defined by the white acceptance proffered by appearing on Sullivan's show. That isn't to say ending segregation wasn't a monumental feat. But the film never allows for the possibility that craving Sullivan's mainstream audience might in itself be a different kind of erasure — an assimilation that ultimately packaged Black performers as palatable nods toward a white sensibility.
With that in mind, where Sunday Best struggles as a sociopolitical documentary, it remains memorable due the fascinating way it places Sullivan on the timeline of Black progress — even if that placement is almost too simplistically conceived.

You should never ask AI chatbots these 6 questions
Today, artificial intelligence is ubiquitous. Last month, ChatGPT – the leading AI chatbot – became the fifth-biggest website in the world. This won't come as a surprise.
Over half of U.S. adults report that they've used AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot, according to an Elon University survey in March. About one in three respondents in the survey say they use a chatbot at least once a day. As of July 2025, ChatGPT has nearly 800 million weekly active users and around 122 million daily users. Suffice to say, use has surged globally and shows no signs of slowing down.
People are turning to ChatGPT and other chatbots for all kinds of purposes these days. AI chatbots are acting as therapists, stepping in as tutors, whipping up recipes, and even playing supporting roles in the complexities of dating. In 2025, the number one reason people use ChatGPT actually is therapy, according to a study by the Harvard Business Review. Other uses, in order, are organization, finding purpose, enhanced learning, generating code, and generating ideas. Coming in after is "fun and nonsense."
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.Whatever the reason is, people feel increasingly inclined to use AI chatbots to ask questions, formulate ideas, or to simply converse. See: just last month, a Washington Post investigation revealed that people are asking ChatGPT whether they're good-looking enough. It all seems innocent enough – bizarre at times, but not harmful. For AI enthusiasts, some of the concerns around ChatGPT and other chatbots may seem unwarranted.
For others, however, the fact that AI use is becoming so pervasive is worrying. The rampant use of AI in academia and universities has professors stumped. A recent MIT study shed light on the cognitive cost of relying too much on a chatbot.
Of course, there are ways in which AI can be beneficial, personally or professionally. But there are some things you can — and should — avoid asking AI. In an age where chatbots seem to be ready and willing to answer anything, there are questions that users may need to steer clear of, for the sake of personal security, safety, and even mental well-being. As Mashable's Cecily Mauran wrote in 2023, "The question is no longer 'What can ChatGPT do?' It's 'What should I share with it?'"
So, for your own sake, we recommend avoiding the following questions when interacting with your AI chatbot of choice.
Conspiracy theoriesChatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama, Grok, and DeepSeek have been noted for their tendency to hallucinate, or the phenomenon of presenting factually incorrect or fabricated information. These chatbots also want to keep users engaged. So, when asking about conspiracy theories or stories within that realm, chatbots may present exaggerated or outright false information to keep you hooked.
A recent feature in the New York Times is a good case study in this: 42-year-old Eugene Torres was sent into a delusional, conspiratorial spiral after consistent conversations with ChatGPT, which left him believing life was. a simulation and he had been chosen to "wake up." Many others contacted the Times to share similar stories, in which they "had been persuaded that ChatGPT had revealed a profound and world-altering truth."
Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threatsIn April, an AI blogger shared a story on Medium about his big mistake with ChatGPT. He asked the chatbot questions about hacking a website, about fake GPS locations, and — perhaps worst of all — "how to make a bomb?" He immediately got a warning email from OpenAI.
Even if it's out of pure curiosity, asking chatbots about CBRN topics (or chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats) is not recommended.
SEE ALSO: What not to share with ChatGPT if you use it for workBack in 2024, OpenAI began developing a blueprint for "evaluating the risk that a large language model (LLM) could aid someone in creating a biological threat." Now the chatbot is more prone to identifying safety issues and risks, and will likely hold people increasingly accountable for what they share. Plus, your conversations are stored somewhere on its systems, so none of it is as private as it may seem. Anthropic, too, is getting stricter when it comes to identifying risks and "[protecting] against increasing potential for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) misuse."
"Egregiously immoral" questionsEarlier this year, Anthropic came under fire when its chatbot Claude was found supposedly trying to contact the press or regulators if it detected "egregiously immoral" questions being asked. As Wired explained:
"...when 4 Opus is 'placed in scenarios that involve egregious wrongdoing by its users,' and is given access to a command line and told something in the system prompt like 'take initiative,' or 'act boldly,' it will send emails to 'media and law-enforcement figures' with warnings about the potential wrongdoing."
The pre-release version of the chatbot was also found to resort to blackmail if it was threatened with removal. The internet even coined the term "Snitch Claude".
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. So, asking various AI chatbots questions that blur the lines, or are perceived as immoral in any way, is probably riskier than you may think.
Questions about customer, patient, and client dataIf you're using ChatGPT for work, it's important to avoid asking questions about client or patient data. Not only can this cost you your job, as Mashable's Timothy Beck Werth explains, but you could also be violating laws or NDAs.
"Sharing personally sensitive or confidential information, such as login information, client information, or even phone number, is [a] security risk," Aditya Saxena, the founder of CalStudio, an AI chatbot development startup, says. "The personal data shared can be used to train AI models and can inadvertently be revealed in conversations with other users."
One way to overcome this is to utilize enterprise services, which are offered by OpenAI and Anthropic. Instead of asking these kinds of questions on private accounts, use enterprise tools which could have built-in privacy and cybersecurity protections implemented.
"It’s always better to anonymize personal data before sharing it with an LLM," Saxena also suggests. "Trusting AI with personal data is one of the biggest mistakes we can make."
Medical diagnosesAsking chatbots for medical information or a diagnosis can save time and effort, even helping people to better understand certain medical symptoms. But relying on AI for medical support comes with drawbacks. Studies are showing that the likes of ChatGPT carry a "high risk of misinformation" when it comes to medical problems. There's also the looming threat of privacy and the fact that chatbots can have racial and gender bias embedded into the information AI provides.
Psychological support and therapyAI as an emerging mental health tool is contentious. For many, AI-based therapy lowers barriers to access, such as cost, and has proven effective in improving mental health. A group of researchers at Dartmouth College conducted a study in which they built a therapy bot, with participants who experienced depression reducing symptoms by 51 percent; participants with anxiety experienced a 31 percent reduction.
But with AI therapy sites growing, there are regulatory risks. A study by Stanford University found that AI therapy chatbots can contribute to "harmful stigma and dangerous responses." For example, different chatbots showed increased stigma toward conditions like alcohol dependence and schizophrenia, according to the study. Certain mental health conditions still need "a human touch to solve", say Stanford's researchers.
"Using AI as a therapist can be dangerous as it can misdiagnose conditions and recommend treatments or actions that can be unsafe," says Saxena. "While most models have built-in safety guardrails to warn users that they could be wrong, these protections can sometimes fail."
For mental health issues, nuance is key. And that's one thing AI may lack.

Garmin Forerunner 955 review: A runner’s honest opinion
I love tracking data on myself. Whether it's how well I slept, what my stress levels are, or even how ready my body is for an activity. Yep, who needs intuition when I’ve got a watch to tell me how I actually feel.
With this level of interest in mundane tracking, you better believe that when it comes to my runs, I want the highest-quality data possible. Enter the Garmin Forerunner 955. It's not just a watch — it's my emotional support run coach.
Why I love the Garmin Forerunner 955Let's break down the stats of this smartwatch. It includes advanced Garmin features such as training readiness, training load, HRV, and sleep monitoring. The battery options are available as solar or non-solar. I have the non-solar option, and this alone can last up to 15 days in smartwatch mode. I recently ran a marathon with the 955 and lost less than 20% battery, so yeah, it's that good. If you’re used to charging your watch more often than your phone, this feels like a small miracle.
It supports full GPS tracking and has a 5 ATM water resistance. This combined with the battery life makes this smartwatch ideal for triathlons and any kind of endurance sport.
SEE ALSO: The best Garmin in 2025The touchscreen is incredibly responsive, but the buttons are still a lifesaver mid-run, so the dual controls are truly a huge selling point. Like the purely button-controlled Garmin watches, this model has three on the left and two on the right.
Now, if you really care about an AMOLED display, this might not be right for you. However, in my opinion, the colors and brightness are more than efficient on this device, and the MIP screen appears much more colorful than previous watches (like the vivoactive 4).
My favorite features of the Garmin Forerunner 955One of my favorite features is the Training Readiness score. It pulls together data from your sleep quality, recovery time, HRV status, and acute training load into an easy-to-understand number that helps you decide whether to go hard or take a rest day. Of course, feel matters too, and you should always listen to your body, but I've genuinely used this to direct my workout intensity and recovery times. Without it, I probably wouldn't rest as much as my body needs.
The Morning Report is another one I didn’t think I’d care about, but now look forward to checking each morning. Each day when I wake up, it gives me a quick snapshot of my sleep score, HRV trends, weather, and suggested training for the day ahead. It’s like having a mini coach check in before I wake up properly.
Navigation-wise, the 955 has full-color maps and turn-by-turn directions, a lifesaver when you’re on a new route or just really bad at directions. I've used it to program in new running routes and followed the map on my wrist as I go, big up that GPS tracking.
Finally, like all Garmin watches, the Forerunner 955 syncs with the Garmin Connect app. When upgrading to this model, I noticed the data presented to me in the app became much more advanced and detailed, so while the Connect app stats aren't exclusive to the Forerunner 955, they are definitely more advanced than some of the earlier released watches.
Where to buy the Garmin Forerunner 955The Garmin Forerunner 955 is available to buy at Amazon. A renewed model will cost you $399.99 (but as of July 19, it's on sale for $314.99). It's also available at Best Buy for $399.99 and Walmart for $395.99 (right now it's on sale for $359.99).
Sales prices vary during major retail holidays, but in short: if you’re serious about your training, or just love micromanaging your rest days, the Forerunner 955 is worth every cent.

Hurdle hints and answers for July 19, 2025
If you like playing daily word games like Wordle, then Hurdle is a great game to add to your routine.
There are five rounds to the game. The first round sees you trying to guess the word, with correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters shown in each guess. If you guess the correct answer, it'll take you to the next hurdle, providing the answer to the last hurdle as your first guess. This can give you several clues or none, depending on the words. For the final hurdle, every correct answer from previous hurdles is shown, with correct and misplaced letters clearly shown.
An important note is that the number of times a letter is highlighted from previous guesses does necessarily indicate the number of times that letter appears in the final hurdle.
If you find yourself stuck at any step of today's Hurdle, don't worry! We have you covered.

We were treated to some really special deals over Prime Day, with Apple deals making a real impression. There were so many live deals that it was difficult to find the real value, so it's always best to rely on an expert
Mashable's resident laptop expert hand-picked the $849 MacBook Air deal as the best of the bunch over Prime Day. "The Starlight colorway briefly fell to $829 on June 20, but I feel totally comfortable endorsing its slightly higher Prime Day price. Realistically, this laptop is a steal even at its full $999 MSRP. Amazon's decision to slash that by an extra $150 mere months after its release is kind of mind-boggling to me," said Haley Henschel.
The best thing about this deal is that it's still live way after Prime Day. As of July 19, the 2025 MacBook Air 13-inch with M4 chip is on sale for $849 at Amazon. The catch is that this deal is no longer available on all colorways, so we can't say for sure how long this price will stick around for.
