Terminal Services: Remote Desktop MSTSC switches
PDF version
For those of you working with multiple machines (windows workstations or servers), here are a few useful switches to know when you are working w/ Remote Desktop:
For servers: /console is extremely useful if you use a standard and shared account w/ some of your colleagues
For workstations (and/or servers): /f, /v and /span are very useful based on your use (support vs actual work on the remote machines)
I would also recommend making your own RDP definition file(s)
- Launch mstsc (Start. Run, “MSTSC” and Enter)
- Create an RDP by providing the computer name or IP address as well as by specifying the various options based on your preferences
- Save the RDP in your favorite shortcut location (or desktop) by clicking on
- You can now simply launch your connection by either double clicking your newly created shortcut:
or
by typing MSTSC and your connection name (assuming your shortcut location is in the PATH environment variable or by adding the path to the RDP connection) at the command prompt
