Welcome back, Skelly: Home Depot finally unveils its 2025 Halloween collection

Mashable - Tue, 07/29/2025 - 16:10

For fans of the Home Depot's iconic 12-foot skeleton, the first "Code Orange" of the year is finally imminent. The home improvement retailer announced Tuesday that its 2025 Halloween collection will launch next week and include the return of "Skelly," plus two new petrifying pets.

The full lineup will go live online and in the Home Depot app on Monday, August 4, before select items hit store shelves later this fall around Labor Day.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

"This year’s collection has something for everyone," said Aubrey Horowitz, the Home Depot's decorative holiday merchant, in a press release. "Whether you’re a Halloween enthusiast adding to your collection or a family starting new traditions, we’ve combined creativity, quality, and value to make your celebrations even spookier.”

Next week's sale will mark the home improvement retailer's first Halloween drop of the year after it scrapped a "Halfway to Halloween" launch in April, disappointing collectors and sparking conspiracy theories among its active fandom on Facebook.

Skelly helms the Home Depot's marquee "Grave & Bones" collection for the sixth year in a row at its usual price of $299. It's joined for the first time by a 5-foot-tall, Doberman-style Sitting Skelly's Dog with moving LCD "LifeEyes" ($249) and a frisky 5-foot-long Skelly's Cat ($199). The Home Depot got a lot of requests for the latter specifically, Horowitz told Mashable. Skelly's other pet, last year's megapopular seven-foot-long Skelly's Dog ($199), will get an online-only restock alongside them.

Rounding out the Skelly family is a new 6.5-foot animated Ultra Skelly ($279), which has Bluetooth support — users can have it play recorded messages or control it in real time from their smartphone. Horowitz said it's the item she's "probably most excited about" because the Halloween market hasn't seen such technology before.

"He's completely customizable, so you can speak into him live and really spook your trick-or-treaters on Halloween," she explained. "You can customize his lights and motion. He has 18 different eyes [settings], so really perfect for any party — Halloween, New Year's. He's kind of a year-round fixture, so I'm really excited about him."

The Home Depot is also launching a new arboraceous "Gruesome Grounds" collection that includes the "Worricrow" and "Gally-Crow," two light-up, motion-activated 15-footers with 12-foot arm spans — its largest animatronics yet. They're both priced at $399, and the Gally Crow will be an online exclusive.

The Home Depot didn't specify when exactly its Halloween drop will begin on August 4, but in years past, its listings have gone live around 6 a.m. ET. All featured items will be available while supplies last.

A few familiar faces won't be returning this year. That includes the 12-foot Inferno Pumpkin Skeleton, which was sold alongside Skelly from 2021 to 2024, as well as last year's Inferno Deadwood Skeleton and motorized Servo Skelly. A Home Depot rep told Mashable that they could return down the road.

Happy belated Summerween

August might seem premature for a Halloween drop, but it's extremely late by the Home Depot's standards. From 2022 to 2024, the retailer launched select props and animatronics in April as part of a Halfway to Halloween sale before releasing its complete lineup in mid-July. That spring sale was canceled for 2025.

The decision was cause for serious concern among the Home Depot's Facebook fandoms, as Mashable previously reported. Many members theorized that the retailer's usual programming was thwarted by President Donald Trump's tariffs on imported goods from China. Skelly and other Home Depot animatronics are made there by a California company called Seasonal Visions International (SVI).

SEE ALSO: Is the Home Depot's viral 12-foot skeleton a victim of President Trump's tariffs?

The Home Depot wouldn't confirm that tariffs directly impacted its Halfway to Halloween event. The company told Mashable in June that its past iterations were meant as a "surprise and delight moment" for its Halloween superfans and that "it's not necessarily a core part of our strategy." However, our investigation found that tariffs had a ripple effect on the Halloween industry this spring.

Some of the Home Depot's competitors wound up postponing or cancelling their own Halloween drops due to economic turmoil. And for its part, SVI ended its free replacement part program, reduced its overall parts availability, and closed its support lines in July, citing "changes in tariffs and the global supply chain shifts" in a note on its website.

In curating its 2025 Halloween collection amid tariff challenges, Horowitz said the Home Depot has prioritized customer value and new innovations.

"[Something that's] really important to the program is being able to meet customers' expectations on the program that we've had year over year," she said. "So in terms of pricing, I am confident that our values are not going to be beat in the market. ... We're going to have both of our collections really fully stocked."

Eternity trailer: Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, and Callum Turner are caught in a heavenly love triangle

Mashable - Tue, 07/29/2025 - 16:02

A24 has already jumped into the love triangle fray this year with Celine Song's Materialists. But in the upcoming romantic comedy Eternity, A24 and writer-director David Freyne put a heavenly twist on love triangle tropes.

The film stars Miles Teller as Larry, a recently deceased man who finds himself at the Junction, the gateway to the afterlife. Here, the dead have a week to choose the one place where they're going to spend eternity — options include Studio 54 World, Man-Free World, and Paris — and who they're going to spend it with.

For Larry, that choice is easy. He wants to spend his afterlife with his wife Joan (Elizabeth Olsen), who arrives at the Junction not long after he does. However, there's one major wrinkle in Larry and Joan's plans for a happily ever after: Joan's first husband, Luke (Callum Turner). Luke died early into their marriage, and he's been waiting for Joan for 67 years in the afterlife. Now, Joan faces a tricky decision: Spend eternity with her first love, or with the man she spent decades married to?

Thus begins a week-long competition for Joan's heart (and future afterlife), one that gets two afterlife coordinators (played by Academy Award winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph and John Early) extremely invested. Who could blame them? I'm already invested from the trailer alone! This is eternity we're talking about, people!

Get your own taste of Eternity's afterlife in the trailer above, which promises plenty of love triangle drama and gorgeous retro production design. If this is the afterlife, then sign me up.

Eternity will premiere at 2025's Toronto International Film Festival. It hits theaters this Nov.

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Seth Meyers reacts to Trumps awkward slip-up when answering an Epstein question

Mashable - Tue, 07/29/2025 - 12:46

Donald Trump may have gone to Scotland for a few days of golf, but that doesn't mean he can escape the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. Quite the opposite, in fact.

In the Late Night clip above, Seth Meyers recaps how press questions about Trump's relationship with the convicted child sex offender followed the president throughout the trip. In one of his responses on Monday, Trump told reporters, "I never had the privilege of going to his island," referring to Epstein’s private Caribbean island Little St. James, the site of many of the financier's alleged crimes.

"Ah, you were doing really good right until 'privilege'. 'Privilege' was not the word you wanted to use," says Meyers, before launching into a Trump impression. "A trip to that terrible island was sadly not an honor that was ever bestowed upon me. 'Privilege' makes it seem like you never turned down an invitation. It seems like you were checking your messages every day in hopes one was forthcoming. You'd be like, Any calls from Jeffrey? No? Yeah, I remember when he used to call."

Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat) will play the patriarch of the Bennet family, Mr Bennet. Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats, Barbie) will be "the dreaded cousin," the insufferable Mr Collins. Then there's the matter of our esteemed patroness Lady Catherine de Bourg, who'll be played by Fiona Shaw.

Daryl McCormack (Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery; Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) will be Mr Bingley.

Louis Partridge (House of Guinness, Disclaimer) will be the incorrigeable Mr Wickham, a character who's "blessed with such happy manners".

As for our handsome yet proud Mr Darcy? Well, he'll be played by Jack Lowden (Slow Horses, Benediction). Lowden has expressed his excitement for "breaking down barriers" by being a ginger Mr Darcy.

The six-part limited series is written by Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) and directed by Euros Lyn (Heartstopper), and Netflix says it will be "a faithful, classic adaptation of the novel."

"Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it," said Alderton in a press release.

"Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life."

The release date for this hotly anticipated series is yet to be announced.

Director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland released the ghastly, groundbreaking, and genre-disrupting 28 Days Later way back in 2002, followed by 28 Weeks Later in 2007. Now, over two decades later, the duo is back with 28 Years Later. And it's a doozy.

As the name suggests, 28 Years Later is set 28 years after the events of the first two films. It stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and newcomer Alfie Williams and delivers a whole new dose of devastating dystopia on a zombie-laden planet. Plus, it creatively used iPhones to film a majority of the horrifying sequences. Mashable's Shannon Connellan called it "one of the most unrelenting and scariest films of the year" in her review. And now it's coming to the small screen.

Here's everything you need to know about how to watch 28 Years Later at home — including when and where it's streaming and how you can watch for less.

What is 28 Years Later about?

28 Years Later follows a family living in a very small community on an island off the coast of England. It's a fortified pocket of humanity away from the Rage Virus-infected mainland and only accessible via a heavily defended causeway on low tide. As a rite of passage, dad Jamie (Taylor-Johnson) takes his 12-year-old son Spike (Williams) to the mainland to see remnants of society and make his first kill. Spike finds out there's a doctor living on the mainland and ventures off with his chronically ill mother, Isla (Comer), in search of a cure.

Of course, it's no easy venture through post-apocalypse Britain. Not to mention, they discover that the Rage Virus has evolved.

Check out the very intense trailer below:

Is 28 Years Later worth watching?

Bringing in $145.8 million at the worldwide box office, 28 Years Later became just the third horror movie of 2025 to surpass the $100 million mark (behind Sinners and Final Destination: Bloodlines). And impressively, most of the reviews coming out of the theater are positive. It currently holds an 88 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 63 percent audience rating. Mashable's own reviewer raved about it, calling it "a triumphant return" and "one of the scariest movies of the year."

"Boyle and Garland, with their impeccably talented team and a magnificent cast — led by the young and wondrous Williams — manage to both connect their original creation with the present and forge a terrifying new landscape, one that will stress you out and make a meal of your own fingernails," Connellan writes.

Zombie apocalypse films are so back, y'all.

As of July 29, there are two ways you can watch 28 Years Later at home: buy it or rent it on digital for as low as $19.99. However, if you wait a couple of months, it will also be available to stream on Netflix. See the details below.

Buy or rent it on digital

28 Years Later is available as of July 29 to buy for $24.99 or rent for $19.99 at digital-on-demand retailers. Make note that if you choose to rent, you'll only get 30 days to watch the film and just 48 hours to finish it once you start. If you choose to buy it, then it's yours to keep.

Here are some quick links to rent or purchase the film:

Stream it on Netflix (at a later date)

While we don't know when 28 Years Later will make its streaming debut, we do know that it will be on Netflix, given Sony Pictures and Netflix's agreement that gives the streamer first dibs. If other recent Sony Pictures films, Heart Eyes and Paddington in Peru, are any indication, we can make an educated guess that it will land on Netflix as early as September.

Since Netflix doesn't offer free trials (and since the platform cracked down on password sharing), you'll need your own Netflix subscription to stream 28 Years Later. Fortunately, Netflix has a few membership tiers; all three options will grant you access.

Watching Netflix with ads is the most affordable option — it'll run you $7.99 per month. If you don't want ads, your next-best choice is to sign up for Netflix Standard for $17.99 per month, which is quite the price jump. Finally, there's a third tier for new subscribers dubbed Netflix Premium. It'll cost you a jaw-dropping $24.99 per month and will let you watch on four household devices at once (as opposed to the other plans' two devices) in 4K Ultra HD + HDR with no ads.
