Wolf Man review: Can Leigh Whannell best his Invisible Man?

Mashable - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 18:00

Be it the scorching rays of the sun, the sting of a silver bullet, or a brutal box office thrashing, nothing can truly kill the Universal Monsters. Since they first lurked onto the silver screen in the early 1900s, this motley crew of Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, and the creature from the Black Lagoon have risen again and again for a sequel, remake, or re-imagining, for better or worse.

For worse, this has resulted in the aborted Dark Universe, which flamed out with Tom Cruise's big-budget flop The Mummy in 2017. For better, there's been 2020's The Invisible Man, in which writer/director Leigh Whannell left his supernatural leanings from the Insidious franchise behind for a more sci-fi-rooted horror. His Wolf Man has a similarly grim and grounded approach, abandoning much of the paranormal lore of werewolves in favor of more penetrating real-life fears.

However, while Wolf Man ditches the lycanthropy tropes of silver weapons and a full moon, Whannell stays true to Blumhouse's formula. The film brings heralded actors — in this case Poor Things' Christopher Abbott and Apartment 7A's Julia Garner — into a central location, where horror can be spun cost-effectively from a single spooky concept. For Whannell, that is taking the gruesome and inescapable transformation of man to beast and making it a metaphor for chronic illness, the kind that robs sufferers of control of their bodies, speech, and even the ability to understand the people around them.

It's a bold move. But does it make for a satisfying horror movie?

Scripted by Whannell and Corbett Tuck, Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as Blake, a San Francisco family man who is happily serving as a stay-at-home dad to his plucky daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth), while his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) works to bring home the metaphorical bacon. However, all her focus on her career has Charlotte feeling disconnected from her daughter and husband. So, when some bizarre personal news offers the family a chance to visit Blake's childhood home in rural Oregon, they leap at the chance for some quality time, far from the hustle and bustle (and relative safety) of human civilization.

Of course, as the title teases, there's something not quite human prowling in the woods near Blake's old house. And it only takes one scratch from a gnarly claw to infect this loving father with a lycanthropic disease. After a scene of frenzied fleeing through a forest, much of Wolf Man takes place within the walls of the cabin where Blake was raised by his macho hunter/survivalist father, who's been proclaimed dead after years missing. As such, there's a home invasion element to Wolf Man, reminiscent of The Strangers. A frightened woman is trapped in a house under siege by a violent and mysterious threat, with no real hope of outsider intervention to save her and her loved ones.

As Blake steadily begins to transform, Charlotte must step up as a mom, protecting her child, and a wife, understanding her husband even as the man she knew vanishes before her very eyes.

Leigh Whannell wallows in agony in Wolf Man.  Credit: Universal Pictures

In many stories of werewolves, there is an inescapable sense of doom, whether the cause be a bite or curse. These tales often follow a hapless man (or teen girl) who is irrevocably changed, and will likely die because of it. Whannell leans into this dread by focusing on the distortions Blake suffers, physically and mentally.

Satisfying the body-horror expectations of the werewolf subgenre, Blake's skin curdles into open sores, which he cannot help but ravage with growing claws and pointed teeth. His luscious hair falls out as his face stretches into a disfigured mockery of his former reflection. His voice vanishes, replaced by a hollow growl. In panning shots, captured practically and enhanced digitally, Whannell reveals how Blake's family sees him and vice versa. As the camera moves from a weeping Charlotte whispering comfort, the lighting changes, the vision blurs, and her voice becomes an indecipherable warble as the film moves into Blake's warping perspective. This wolf vision is not intended to give us the sense of a slasher in pursuit or a predator that is targeting prey. It's a nightmarish perversion of reality, reflecting how Blake feels trapped, even damned, in his mutating body.

It's tragic and unnerving, especially as Abbott relishes every bit of body horror. (Whannell counts David Cronenberg's The Fly as an inspiration.) However, the metaphor between werewolfism and chronic illness ultimately feels obvious and lazy. Yes, both can be inescapable and horrific. The effects of both can be terrifying to those who suffer from them and the loved ones forced to witness. But this analogy ignores the ferocity and brute strength that is still present in even Whannell's pared-down werewolf lore. Where does that fit into his metaphor?

Essentially, Wolf Man begins as a clever idea that runs out of steam well before the movie ends. Blake's transformation, slow and grueling across several sequences, begins to feel episodic, as does the grief-stricken displays of his wife and child. And so, even at one hour and forty-five minutes, this Wolf Man drags.

Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott commit but can't save Wolf Man.  Credit: Universal Pictures

These two deserve better than Whannell and Tuck's script. Both their characters are thinly sketched archetypes. Blake is the modern gentle parent, desperate to protect his kid from the childhood trauma instilled by harsh words, fear, and unchecked machismo. Charlotte — well, she sure has a job and cares about it when she's at home despite Blake's condescending remarks! Much of the movie depends on caring about characters who never feel anything but vague signifiers of work/life balance.

To his credit, Abbott — who shot this very physically demanding film while still in physical therapy for an on-stage knee injury — is committed to every bit. With child actor Firth, he is gentle, gamely goofy, and sincerely focused. With Garner, he is alert, though his attention is edged with a low-boil frustration that will never get a proper voice. And when he is the monster, he is in turn a pitiable puddle of malleable flesh and a ferocious creature, barrelling after his terrified family. Garner matches him, her hard stare glittering with righteous tears. But with the first act failing to establish these characters in the way The Fly or — to cite another danger-from-within domestic horror film — Rosemary's Baby did, the rest just doesn't work. Instead, it becomes a slog of tears, blood, and moping.

In the end, Whannell's Wolf Man is a maudlin mess, which heaps on grief and grisliness without balancing it with character. While there are a few moments of delicious tension — like an opening sequence where a young Blake goes from hunting to hunted — Wolf Man overall is more one-note than anything. Compared to The Invisible Man it's a serious misstep for Whannell. Compared to The Mummy, well, that might have been a wreck of a movie, but at least it was occasionally fun.

Wolf Man opens in theaters Jan. 17.

Meta is reportedly laying off 3,600 employees

Mashable - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 17:57

Mark Zuckerberg is doubling down on more cartoon villainy this week by proposing to lay off more than 3,600 employees — or roughly five percent of Meta's "lowest performers." Of course, in true capitalist fashion, he plans to backfill those positions later this year.

"I've decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster," Zuckerberg said in an internal memo, according to Bloomberg. "We typically manage out people who aren't meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we’re going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle."

CNBC reports that affected employees will be notified by Feb. 10, giving them a month to stew over their fate and brace for the worst. Those let go will receive severance similar to what previous laid-off employees got, the report claims. In 2022, when Meta slashed nearly a quarter of its workforce, the company offered a severance package that included 16 weeks of base pay, plus two additional weeks for each year of service (with no cap), full payout of remaining PTO, six months of healthcare, three months of career support, and immigration assistance.

SEE ALSO: 8 ways Mark Zuckerberg changed Meta ahead of Trump’s inauguration

This comes just a few days after Meta announced a few fairly massive reversals in policies. Zuckerberg announced last week that his platforms would get rid of fact-checkers in favor of Community Notes, which many civil and human rights organizations point out has the potential to lead to increased violence, hate speech, and the spread of misinformation.

Meta also lifted prohibitions against some forms of hate speech on its platforms, allowing posts that call women property, specific ethnic groups "filth," and more approved use of hate speech. The company got rid of DEI initiatives, removed tampons from men's bathrooms in Meta’s offices in California, Texas, and New York, deleted trans and nonbinary themes on its Messenger app, and announced that political content would once again be recommended on Threads and Instagram.

Space calendar 2025: Here are the moments you wont want to miss

Mashable - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 17:09

Though 2025 won't mark the return of astronauts into deep space as NASA had hoped, launchpads still will be scorching-hot from a procession of robotic spacecraft attempting to land on the moon

How many of these moon landings will succeed? Will the number top the two-ish (one of which made a heckuva comeback) last year?

Giant commercial rockets, such as SpaceX's Starship and Blue Origin's New Glenn, will likely also have several uncrewed orbital test launches as they iron out the kinks in their hardware. And while people await scientific missions to distant solar system destinations, a few probes will send home close-up pictures of planets as they snag gravitational boosts from flybys.

Here's a round-up of space missions and cosmic events just around the bend. Bookmark this calendar and look for updates from Mashable throughout the year.

SEE ALSO: NASA leader doubts Elon Musk will push Trump to axe moon rocket BepiColombo makes final Mercury flyby: Jan. 8

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, but it's perhaps the most overlooked of the rocky worlds in the solar system. Hot and harder to reach than Saturn, it hasn't enjoyed the level of study that other worlds have.

But BepiColombo, a joint mission of the European and Japanese space agencies, seeks to change that. The spacecraft makes its sixth and final flyby on Jan. 8 before returning to enter orbit around the planet in late 2026. Closest approach will take the spacecraft just 160 miles above the surface of Mercury. Mission controllers will release images of the event on Jan. 9.

Two moon landers on one rocket: Jan. 15

Two small uncrewed spacecraft, one of which is carrying several NASA instruments, will try to land on the moon with a boost from the same rocket.

Both Firefly Aerospace and Japan's ispace will ride a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket slated to leave Earth as early as 1:11 a.m. ET Jan. 15. Firefly's Blue Ghost lander was originally scheduled to lift off in late 2024, and the launch will mark its maiden voyage. The spacecraft is slated to travel for 45 days before trying to touch down in early March.

Firefly's flight will be the first Commercial Lunar Payload Services mission of the year. The NASA program has recruited vendors from the private sector to help deliver instruments to the moon and send back crucial data.

Ispace's new Hakuto-R mission will be its second try, after it ran out of fuel and crashed on the lunar surface in April 2023. The Resilience lander, a partnership with Japan's space agency JAXA, is taking a long way to the moon to save on fuel, arriving about four to five months after launch.

Blue Origin's first flight for New Glenn: Jan. 16

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will soon get a chance to see his giant rocket New Glenn launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

His aerospace company Blue Origin started a countdown on Jan. 13, but launch controllers waved off the opportunity when a technical issue arose. The company will try again no earlier than Jan. 16, targeting a three-hour launch window that opens at 1 a.m. ET.

Blue Origin's goal is to reach orbit, and the company will also try to land its booster on a barge in the Atlantic Ocean so that it can be reused on future flights, though executives admit doing so would be "ambitious" on the first try.

Tweet may have been deleted SpaceX tests upgraded Starship: Jan. 16

SpaceX is preparing to launch another uncrewed Starship test, this time with an upgraded spacecraft and 10 mock satellites to practice a payload deployment in space.

This SpaceX launch would mark the seventh Starship test and feature a reused engine from the booster returned from the fifth test. Weather-related postponements have made it possible that Starship and Blue Origin's New Glenn will lift off for these tests on the same day. Starship's one-hour launch window opens at 4:00 p.m. CT.

NASA moon rover and orbiter delivery: February

Intuitive Machines made history last year as the first company to reach the moon intact — though its lander, Odysseus, broke landing gear and touched down tilted

The Houston-based company is now gearing up for a second moon landing — this time with the Athena lander. The mission, referred to as IM-2 or PRIME-1, will carry a NASA rover. The spacecraft will test a drill and mass spectrometer, a device that identifies the kinds of particles in a substance. As planned, another spacecraft, NASA's Lunar Trailblazer, will also hitch a ride on this flight. The small satellite will orbit the moon to map out the locations of lunar water.

Europa Clipper flies by Mars: Feb. 27

After a successful October 2024 launch, the Europa Clipper spacecraft has been hurtling through space. It's on schedule to make its first flyby of Mars on Feb. 27, where it will get a gravity assist to continue its journey. The craft won't arrive at Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, for its mission until 2030.

Scientists are intrigued by Europa because they believe it could hold double the water held by Earth's oceans. Could this small world in the outer solar system have conditions capable of supporting life? If NASA finds that Europa is a habitable place, a second Europa mission could return to determine if there are indeed any inhabitants.

Launch of new astrophysics observatory: February

NASA intends to launch an astrophysics observatory to create a map of the entire sky in 3D. The mission, SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer), will orbit Earth while studying hundreds of millions of stars and galaxies, showing them in 102 invisible "colors."

One of the main goals of the mission is to learn more about cosmic inflation, a brief but crucial phase of the Big Bang that contributed to the universe's expansion. It will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Tweet may have been deleted European spacecraft Hera flies by Mars: March

Back in 2022, NASA deliberately crashed a spacecraft into a harmless asteroid to practice thwarting a space rock, should a hazardous one ever be on a collision course with Earth.

The European Space Agency is providing a follow-up to that test, known as Hera. The mission's spacecraft launched in October 2024 and will rendezvous with Dimorphos, the slammed asteroid, in 2026. But this March, it will also have a quick pop-in with Mars and one of the Red Planet's two moons, Deimos. Mission controllers will use the opportunity to collect data on the Martian moon.

Boeing astronaut crew returns home: March NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have been waiting for their ride since the space agency decided not to send them home on Boeing's Starliner spaceship. Credit: Joe Raedle / Getty Images

Two astronauts whose eight-day visit to the International Space Station turned into a more than eight-month layover are expected to return to Earth in March.

NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have been waiting for their ride since the space agency decided not to send them home on the spaceship they rode in on. That test vehicle, Boeing's Starliner, landed empty without any problems, but NASA hadn't wanted to risk it after the capsule experienced propulsion issues in space.

The pair was supposed to return in a SpaceX Dragon capsule in February, but NASA announced at the end of 2024 that the flight would likely be pushed back to March. Wilmore and Williams, who were integrated into Crew-9, will fly back to Earth after Crew-10 arrives at the space station.

NASA and India join forces on a satellite: March

NASA is teaming up with India's space agency on a mission to study Earth's land and ice.

This mission involves the NISAR satellite, which will scan all of the planet's surfaces twice every 12 days to measure changes. The satellite will launch from the Indian Space Research Organisation's space port, the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, on India's southeastern coast.

Private astronauts fly to ISS: no earlier than spring

Private astronauts will launch to the International Space Station for Axiom Space's fourth such mission. The four crew members are awaiting approval to fly to the orbiting lab and will launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, no earlier than this spring.

When Axiom flew its first private mission in 2022, it redefined the word "astronaut." For decades, that title was reserved for government space pilots and crew. More recently, uber-rich space tourists earned the distinction by breaching Earth's atmosphere. But with Axiom's private mission came a third possible description: Someone privately trained and sent into space to perform commercial scientific research. Axiom crews receive 750 to over 1,000 hours of training.

Twin spacecraft go to Mars: no earlier than spring The Escapade mission will involve two Mars orbiters built by Rocket Lab. Credit: Rocket Lab

A NASA-funded science mission seeks to get to the bottom of how solar radiation strips away the tattered Martian atmosphere. Called Escapade, the mission will involve two Mars orbiters built by Rocket Lab.

The flight was previously scheduled for October aboard Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket, which would have been its first launch. But, as rockets are wont to do, the inaugural flight was delayed. NASA and Blue Origin are now in talks for a new launch date for that mission, no earlier than spring 2025.

Lucy spacecraft flies by asteroid: April 20

NASA launched the Lucy spacecraft on a grand 12-year asteroid tour last fall with plans to fly by several space rocks that share Jupiter’s orbit. On April 20, Lucy will encounter a small main-belt asteroid, Donaldjohanson, as a sort of test sequence before it visits seven Trojan asteroids. The asteroid, called DJ for short, is only 2.5 miles wide, with an extremely slow rotation that takes more than 10 days to complete.

Tweet may have been deleted Peak of Lyrids meteor shower: April 21-22

Meteor showers happen every year or at regular intervals as Earth passes through the dusty wake of previous comets. Each time a comet zips through the inner solar system, the sun boils off some of its surface, leaving behind a trail of debris. When the planet intersects with the old comet detritus, the result can be a spectacular show, with sometimes up to hundreds of meteors visible per hour. The debris that creates the Lyrid meteor shower originates from comet Thatcher. The Lyrids, best viewed from the Northern Hemisphere, will be active from April 17 to 26.

Peak of Eta Aquariids meteor shower: May 3-4

The Eta Aquariids meteor shower, best viewed from the southern tropics, produces strong "persistent trains" of shooting stars. The shower is the first of two each year created by Halley's Comet debris. The celestial event will be active from April 20 to May 21.

The Delta Aquariids are another shower best observed from the southern tropics. Conditions will be favorable for viewing meteors in the morning. Astronomers suspect the interacting debris causing the event came from the strange Comet Machholz. The event will be active from July 18 to Aug. 12.

Peak of Perseids meteor shower: Aug. 12-13

The popular Perseids, made up of remnants of comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, is usually a spectacular show for the Northern Hemisphere. The meteor shower is active from July 17 to Aug. 23. But don't get your hopes up this year: Experts say the waning gibbous moon, more than 80 percent full, will allow only the brightest meteors to be seen.

Astrobotic attempts moon landing, again: fall

Astrobotic Technologies tried to become the first commercial company to land on the moon last year, but it lost its chance just a few hours into the flight because of a fuel leak. The company will try again this fall with its Griffin lander.

Originally, this mission was supposed to carry a NASA rover to drill for ice at the lunar south pole. But VIPER — short for Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover — was cancelled due to cost overruns. Griffin will still launch without the rover as a flight demonstration of the lander and engines.

Peak of Orionids meteor shower: Oct. 22-23

The Orionids meteor shower marks the return of activity caused by Halley's Comet debris. In recent years, the displays have been pretty lackluster, but a waning crescent moon rising near dawn means moonlight won't obscure the shower in 2025. The celestial event will run from Oct. 2 to Nov. 12.

Peak of Southern Taurids meteor shower: Nov. 3-4

The Southern Taurids make up a complex meteor shower. Usually the displays are weak, but Taurid meteors are more numerous sometimes. Known as a "swarm year," 2025's event could offer more fireballs as Earth plows through a group of pebble-sized fragments from the Comet Encke. But given the moon's phase, there's a good chance moonlight will interfere with viewing most Taurids. Activity will go from Oct. 13 to Nov. 27.

A Dream Chaser spaceplane, Tenacity, is expected to launch to the International Space Station in 2025. Credit: Sierra Space Peak of the Leonids meteor shower: Nov. 16-17

The Leonids are some of the fastest-moving meteors, traveling up to 44 miles per second. The debris that causes the show comes from Comet Tempel-Tuttle, but the displays are usually pretty weak. The exceptions are years when the showers become so-called "meteor storms," but that won't likely happen again until perhaps 2035. The shower will be active from Nov. 3 to Dec. 2.

Peak of Geminids meteor shower: Dec. 12-13

Widely regarded as the best meteor shower of the year, the Geminids can be seen from most any part of the world, especially the Northern Hemisphere. The Geminids are denser meteors, allowing stargazers to see them as low as 29 miles above ground before the cosmic dust burns up. The shower will be active between Dec. 1 and 21.

This year the moon will have a waning crescent phase, which rises around 2 a.m. local time. Prior to that, views should be moon-free. You could glimpse bright meteors by facing a direction with the moon at your back, according to the American Meteor Society.

Peak of Ursids meteor shower: Dec. 21-22

The Ursid meteors are caused by debris from Tuttle's Comet, which orbits every 13 years. This shower, often overlooked because of its close timing to Christmas, can only be observed in the Northern Hemisphere. Because of a new moon at the shower's peak, moonlight won't interfere with the show. The event will be active from Dec. 16 to 26.

Other possible missions in 2025
  • ESA will send a satellite into orbit around the moon to serve as a communications relay for lunar navigation and telecommunications. Called Lunar Pathfinder, the satellite is expected to ride along with a Firefly Aerospaces Blue Ghost vehicle. The Blue Ghost lander will continue to the moon's far side and deploy a communications terminal as well as a radio telescope experiment. The launch could happen as early as this year

  • Sierra Space has been working on a spacecraft with the nostalgia of NASA's space shuttle program. Dream Chaser, a cargo space plane capable of runway landings, is set to launch for the first time to the International Space Station for a resupply mission sometime this year

  • Following Intuitive Machines' second mission in early 2025, the company will also shoot for another later in 2025 or early 2026. If successful, the lunar landing mission, IM-3 or PRISM, will deploy rovers and study a so-called "lunar swirl."

Daredevil: Born Again trailer marks a bloody return for Matt Murdock, Wilson Fisk, and more

Mashable - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 16:32

Marvel has released a new trailer for Daredevil: Born Again, a soft reboot of Netflix's Daredevil series. And from the looks of the it, Born Again isn't pulling any punches.

SEE ALSO: 2025 TV preview: All the TV shows you need to know, and where to stream them

The trailer opens on a diner chat between lawyer Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and mobster Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio). "It's not entirely unpleasant seeing you again," Wilson tells Matt.

Over the course of their discussion, we learn two game-changing pieces of information. First, Fisk is now Mayor of New York City. Second, Matt has put a stop to his vigilantism, saying, "a line was crossed." But given that the show is called Daredevil: Born Again, you can bet it won't be long until Matt puts on his Daredevil mask again.

On top of Matt and Wilson being back, Daredevil: Born Again's trailer also highlights the return of characters like Karen (Deborah Ann Woll), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), and Punisher Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal). It also teases some fairly brutal beatdowns — but then again, it wouldn't be Daredevil without some great fights now, would it?

Daredevil: Born Again premieres March 4 at 9 p.m. ET on Disney+.

TikTok might go for a total shutdown in the US on Sunday

Mashable - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 15:10

TikTok is preparing for a shutdown in the U.S. on Sunday, but it might be more radical than many users expected.

If TikTok doesn't find a buyer before Sunday, Jan 19, it will likely have to stop operation in the U.S. This is due to a law signed by President Biden in April, which requires TikTok parent company Bytedance to sell its U.S. assets by the deadline.

But according to The Information (via Reuters), TikTok is planning to completely shut off U.S. users from accessing the app. New users in the U.S. would be unable to download and install the app, while existing users attempting to open the app would merely see a pop-up message directing them to a website with more information about the ban, thus rendering them completely unable to use the TikTok app.

SEE ALSO: TikTok ban countdown: See the latest updates as time runs short

This is not what the law requires. TikTok is actually required to only ban new TikTok downloads on Apple and Google's app stores in the U.S., while existing users would still be able to use the app (for a time, at least), though they wouldn't be able to update it.

It's unclear why TikTok would go for such a nuclear option. The app reportedly plans to give users the option to download all their data.

SEE ALSO: How to download your favorite TikToks ahead of the ban

TikTok has been fighting the ban, which has been put in place due to the Biden administration's belief that China has too much of an influence over TikTok, through legal means, though with little success.

There's also the chance for ByteDance to find a last-minute buyer. Microsoft, which has previously tried to acquire TikTok but failed, and X CEO Elon Musk, have been floated as possible options.

Hinge launches AI-driven prompt feedback to help users write better profiles

Mashable - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 14:00

Today, the dating app Hinge launches Prompt Feedback, an AI feature to help users write more original responses to the prompts the app is known for. The app is the latest to leverage AI to advance features, such as Grindr testing an AI "wingman" and Bumble rolling out AI-generated icebreakers.

SEE ALSO: Broke but looking for love? Try the best free dating apps that actually work in 2025.

Prompt Feedback doesn't tell the user what to say or even suggest language, according to Hinge's announcement. Instead, it provides feedback on the user's prompt answer on three levels:

  • "Great Answer," keep it as-is.

  • "Try a Small Change," encouraging the user to tweak the response.

  • "Go a Little Deeper," suggesting adding more details.

Users will see this private feedback when editing their profile prompts. You can choose whether to change your answer given the feedback or keep it the same.

Via Giphy

Hinge prompts are one of the most distinctive features of the app, with likes on prompts 47 percent more likely to lead to a date than likes on photos. But 63 percent of Hinge daters told the app in a survey that they have difficulty knowing what to include in their profile. What may result is generic, one-word, and cliched responses. The app seeks to nudge users away from said responses on their profile.

"We're all familiar with dating app clichés like 'pineapple on pizza' or being 'overly competitive about... everything.' While these responses are common, they often fall short in showcasing the individuality and creativity that ignite meaningful conversations," said Hinge's director of relationship science, Logan Ury, in the announcement. "By crafting Prompt responses that highlight your unique quirks and share authentic details about your personality, you can help potential matches get to know the real you."

Last year, Hinge founder and CEO Justin McLeod told Mashable that Hinge was aware of the dating app fatigue experienced by singles and that he and his team are responding to that. Hinge recently rolled out a limit on unanswered messages to help users be more intentional in conversations with matches. Now, the app is utilizing AI to help tired dating app users get more out of prompts. Prompt Feedback seems distinct from AI services that write the message for you — something daters who are sick of app dating may succumb to.

"With Prompt Feedback, we're intentionally leveraging Al to provide personalized coaching during a key moment for daters making a great first impression on their profiles," said McLeod in the Prompt Feedback announcement. "For years, our research team has identified what helps people discover compatibility that leads to dates, and now daters can apply these insights through specific, tailored advice."

How to use Genmoji on iOS 18

Mashable - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 13:55

Genmoji, unveiled at WWDC 2024, is arguably one of the most highly anticipated features coming to iOS 18. An amalgamation of the words "generative AI" and "emoji," Genmoji lets you describe the emoji you'd like to create.

Although iOS offers a sizable library of emoji to choose from, there are times when you can't quite find the right character that encapsulates an expression you want to convey. Genmoji solves this problem. Leveraging Apple Intelligence and on-device processing, the new AI-powered iOS 18 will have the ability to generate customized emoji. The question is, though, "How do you use Genmoji?"

SEE ALSO: Why 'Apple Intelligence' isn't a chatbot: 'We're not taking a teenager and telling it to fly a plane.'

Genmoji was released to the public on Monday, Dec. 9 with iOS 18.2. Here's how to use them.

iOS 18: How to use Genmoji

Genmoji, like other Apple Intelligence features, are only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models, as well as the entire iPhone 16 lineup.

With that being said, if you want to get a head start on knowing how, exactly, one uses Genmoji, here's what we know based on an update from Apple.

Firstly, make sure your iPhone is updated to the iOS 18.2 via Settings > General > Software update.

Next, in the Messages app, tap on the "+" button and tap on "Image Playground."

Next, you'll be prompted to request early access Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand.

  1. Open the Messages app.

  2. Tap on a thread or compose a new message.

  3. Tap on the emoji icon.

  4. Start typing your description in the text field. For example, "A pink flamingo with tap-dancing shoes."

  5. Tap on "Create new emoji."

An ovular bubble will appear, showing that it is currently generating a new Genmoji. After a few seconds, you should see some iterations of your new AI-generated emoji. Swipe through the options and hit "Insert" on the one you like the most.

Alongside Genmoji, we're also expecting to see another highly anticipated AI-powered tool called Image Playground, which lets you generate AI images. Image Playground is also expected to launch via iOS 18.2 in December.

This nugget of information was later corroborated by Apple itself, which announced that Genmoji will land on supported iPhones next month.
