How to watch the campy body horror gem 'The Substance' at home
"Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself?" So asks The Substance, Coralie Fargeat's sophomore feature and winner of the Best Screenplay award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. While it's still floating around theaters, the body horror romp is coming to a streaming service near you just in time for Halloween.
The Hollywood ageism satire stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid, and positive word of mouth has made the horror movie a surprise hit. Here's everything you need to know about how to watch The Substance at home and online, including when and where it starts streaming and the best deals to save some money.
What is The Substance about? The Substance stars Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister who's fired from her fitness TV program for the unforgivable crime of aging. Battling with crippling Hollywood ageism, she's introduced to a new drug known as "the Substance." A single injection is all it takes for Elisabeth to be reborn as the beautiful and youthful Sue (Margaret Qualley), who then begins her own rise through Hollywood.
Of course, there's always a catch. The Substance forces you to split time between your two bodies; Elisabeth must spend exactly seven days as herself, then seven days as Sue. When she messes with the balance, things get...bloody.
Check out the official trailer:
Is The Substance worth watching? The Substance has become the most successful box office release for arthouse distributor and streamer Mubi. The bold and bloody film has been creating a ton of buzz, with audiences giving it a 74 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics rating is even more impressive with a glowing 91 percent.
"Audaciously gross, wickedly clever, and possibly Demi Moore's finest hour, The Substance is a gasp-inducing feat from writer-director Coralie Fargeat," the critics consensus reads on Rotten Tomatoes.
While Mashable's own reviewer wasn't a big fan, writing that the "horror sci-fi plot of The Substance feels incomplete," most reviews are very positive. Culture writer Zach Schonfeld may have summed it up best, calling it a "B-movie with an A-list cast" — in a good way. Just be warned, many folks will be squirming in their seats over the amount of blood and gore. It is a body horror movie, after all.
How can I watch The Substance at home? Credit: MubiThe Substance made its digital retail debut on Oct. 31, meaning it's available for purchase at video-on-demand retailers like Prime Video and Apple TV+ for $19.99. The film will likely also be available to rent at a later date.
Here are some quick links to purchase the film on digital:
Prime Video — $19.99
Apple TV+ — $19.99
Fandango at Home (Vudu) — $19.99
In a rare turn of events, The Substance will also make its streaming debut on Oct. 31 for those who don't want to purchase the film. The only catch is that it won't be streaming on the usual services like Hulu or Max. Instead, you can watch The Substance on Mubi beginning on Halloween.
Mubi is built for cinephiles. Sure, it's yet another streaming service, but where it differs is quality. The Mubi library is brimming with the best of international cinema. The streamer showcases a vast array of films from America and abroad, mainstream and independent, classics, new releases, award-winners, and Mubi's own originals — like The Substance. Mubi subscriptions start at $14.99 per month, but we've rounded up a few ways to save some money on the streamer below.

New 'Nintendo Music’ app lets you listen to 40 years of video game tunes — here’s how to get it
For years, some Nintendo die-hards (me) have been frustrated at the company's refusal to officially release music on streaming services. The company just fixed that in a very Nintendo-like manner.
Meet Nintendo Music, a new Android and iOS app that is like Spotify, but for Nintendo music. You can listen to high-quality recordings of Nintendo tracks from across the company's four-decade history of making game consoles, from the NES to the Switch. There's just one catch: You need to pay.
Specifically, you have to pay for a Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) account, which also allows Switch owners to play games like Splatoon 3 online. An NSO membership will set you back $20 a year. Unfortunately, there's no way to buy a membership to just listen to music. If you don't own a Switch, you'd essentially be paying for multiplayer services you can't even use, just to listen to music.
There's also a major caveat right now in that there's barely any music on the app on launch day. Nintendo has promised to steadily release new music over time and it wasn't lying about that, as there are only 23 games total represented in the app right now. The current selection is unusual; it includes two different versions of the Metroid for NES soundtrack and a library of every menu song from the Wii, but nothing from Super Mario 64.
Still, the UI is clean and every game has several built-in playlists for things like level music, boss fight tunes, and so on. The bones of a cool app are here, as long as Nintendo keeps its promise to add music over time.
M4 MacBook Pro vs. M3 MacBook Pro: What are the differences?
Like the M3 MacBook Pro at launch in 2023, the 14-inch M4 version starts at $1,599.
Credit: AppleHere are the basic specs that you get for that price:
14.2-inch Liquid Retina display with 3024x1964 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate
M4 chip
16GB RAM
512GB storage
Rated for 24 hours of battery life
The biggest difference between M3 and M4 that should be noted immediately is the RAM. Last year's MacBook Pro offered 8GB RAM in the base model, putting it behind some competitors. This year, there are no 8GB models; you get 16GB at minimum, which can go up to 24GB if you feel like paying more. Storage options have not changed from last year to this year, however.
On top of that, the new M4 chip should give performance boosts to the 2024 MacBook Pro, but since we haven't tested it yet, it's impossible to say for sure.
M4 MacBook Pro vs. M3 MacBook Pro: DisplayThese two displays are nearly identical:
3,024 x 1,964-pixel resolution
16:10 aspect ratio
254 pixels per inch
ProMotion (i.e., up to 120Hz refresh rate)
Similar to the M3 MacBook Pro, the new M4 MacBook Pro continues to sport a notch (that still doesn't have Face ID).
M3 MacBook Pro Credit: Kimberly Gedeon / MashableHowever, there are two differences to note. The peak SDR brightness on the M4 model is 1,000 nits, while the same metric came in at 600 nits on the M3 MacBook Pro. Plus, the M4 MacBook Pro offers the nano-texture display option that's also available on the iPad Pro, Pro Display XDR, Studio Display, and iMac.
What's a nano-texture display? It's designed to dramatically reduce glare. As such, this option is best for users who often contend with challenging lighting conditions like sun-drenched offices.
I've had some experience with the nano-texture display on the iPad Pro, and while it does, indeed, significantly reduce glare and manages bright lighting conditions like a champ, there's a chance that you may notice a drop in the panel's vividness.
M4 MacBook Pro vs. M3 MacBook Pro: DesignAs far as visual design, the biggest difference between these two MacBooks is that you can get the new one in Space Black as well as silver.
M4 MacBook Pro Credit: AppleBy contrast, the M3 model is silver or bust. Here are the physical dimensions of the new M4 MacBook Pro:
Height: 0.61 inches
Width: 12.31 inches
Depth: 8.71 inches
Weight: 3.5 pounds
Those are, in fact, the exact same dimensions as the M3 model. You may be thinking, "So they really just changed some internals, added a new color, and called it a day, huh?" Well, not exactly.
M4 MacBook Pro vs. M3 MacBook Pro: PortsAnother physical differentiator between the M3 and M4 MacBook Pros is the addition of a third Thunderbolt 4 port.
M3 MacBook Pro ports Credit: Kimberly Gedeon / MashableThe M3 model only had two, while the M4 model has three, giving users more flexibility with external displays. Aside from that, the port selection is the same across both devices: an SD card slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an HDMI port, and a MagSafe port for charging.
No, there are no USB type-A ports.
M4 MacBook Pro vs. M3 MacBook Pro: PerformanceWe tested the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro's Geekbench score, which tests for CPU performance, and it notched a multi-core score of 11,998, which offered an 18% performance uptick over the M2 chip.
M4 MacBook Pro Credit: AppleApple didn't reveal performance delta figures between the M2 and M4 chips, but it did compare the M4 chip to the M1 chip. The Cupertino-based tech giant claims that the M4 chip is 1.8 times faster than the M1 chip for tasks like "editing gigapixel photos." When it comes to rendering complex scenes via Blender, the M4 chip is reportedly 3.4 times faster.
For AI workloads (e.g., Apple Intelligence), the M4 chip is 3 times more powerful, according to Apple.
M4 MacBook Pro vs. M3 MacBook Pro: Battery lifeAs noted earlier, the M4 MacBook Pro promises 24 hours of battery life on a single charge.
M4 MacBook Pro Credit: AppleThis is a rating by Apple that can't be verified yet, as we haven't gotten the new MacBook in for testing at the time of writing. However, Apple rated last year's model for 22 hours, meaning the M4 MacBook Pro should theoretically beat the M3 model in terms of battery longevity.
We tested the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro and it lasted 16 hours and 23 minutes. Once we test the battery life of the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro, we'll update this face-off.
M4 MacBook Pro vs. M3 MacBook Pro: Which should you buy?Battery life is an important aspect of making a purchase decision regarding buying laptops. We don't know the runtime of the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro just yet, but even without this figure, the M3 MacBook Pro is impressive at 16 hours and 23 minutes.
If snagging a nano-texture display, getting three Thunderbolt 4 ports, and having a minor boost in power isn't enough to sway you, the M3 MacBook Pro should be sufficient enough to meet your needs.

Note that paid members of the My Best Buy program (Plus and Total) save $50 to $150 on their preorders, depending on the configuration.
The M4 MacBook Pros will begin shipping on Friday, Nov. 8.
What's newAnnounced Wednesday (Oct. 30) following a brief leak on Apple's website, the new models include a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 chip, plus 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. They all come in space black and silver.
The M4 MacBook Pros are all equipped with Liquid Retina XDR displays that offer up to 1,000 nits of SDR brightness (a bump from 600 nits for SDR in their predecessors), and buyers have the option of upgrading them with a new "nano-texture display" for $150 more. This "dramatically reduces glare and distractions from reflections," says Apple. It throws in a free polishing cloth worth $19.
Apple's new nano-texture display option for M4 MacBook Pros should make their screens easier to view outdoors. Credit: AppleThe top bezel of these displays contains a new 12MP Center Stage camera with support for "Desk View," a feature that adds a top-down view of the user's desk during video calls; the previous MacBook Pros had 1080p webcams.
Apple also claims that the new MacBook Pros offer up to 24 hours of battery life, which would make them the longest-lasting Macs ever made. (The 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro lasted nearly 17 hours per charge in Mashable's testing, for what it's worth. A 24-hour battery life would put Apple's laptops on par with fresh Copilot+ PCs like the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7.)

The M4 model tacks on three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the M4 Pro and M4 Max versions have three Thunderbolt 5 ports that promise faster-than-double transfer speeds.
M4 configurationsGeared toward "entrepreneurs, students, creators, or anyone doing what they love," Apple's new starter MacBook Pro comes with 16GB to 32GB of memory and 512GB to 2TB of SSD storage. (That first number is a welcome bump from the M3 generation's 8GB of base RAM.)

Every Apple Mac announcement so far
Last week, Apple promised a week of new Mac announcements in the near future. Well, the future is now, and Apple has unveiled a new Mac device and released Apple Intelligence.
Let's not waste any time. Here are all of the announcements Apple made this week.
SEE ALSO: Remember the legendary iMac G4? Apple's smart display might look just like it Apple Mac week: Every announcement madeApple isn't disappointing with its week of announcements. Here's what we know about so far.
Apple Intelligence It's here. Credit: AppleHey, remember earlier this year when Apple announced its suite of AI features? Some of those are out now.
Apple confirmed on its Newsroom blog that the first wave of Apple Intelligence features are now available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. If you have a device in one of those product families made within the last two years or so, you now have access to features like Rewrite and Proofread, which can help you craft the perfect email. Siri has also become more conversational, while a new Photos app feature lets you erase unwanted objects from the frame using AI.
Journalists should also take note because the Notes and Phone apps now allow users to "record, transcribe, and summarize audio," per Apple's blog post. If you want to make custom AI-powered emoji, though, you'll have to wait until the next batch of features drops.
M4 iMacSurprise! There's a new iMac, starting at $1,299.
Pink! Credit: AppleIt runs on Apple's latest in-house M4 chip, which Apple claims gives it big performance boosts over the M1 iMac. No word on how it compares to the M3 model, though. Regardless, Apple claims it's up to 1.7x faster than the M1 model. It also comes in seven colors: silver, blue, purple, pink, green, yellow, and orange.
Apple also updated the included peripherals, such as the keyboard and mouse, with USB-C ports. Here are some other noteworthy specs:
24-inch 4.5K display
12MP front camera
16GB starting RAM, up to 32GB
Four USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports
Apple Intelligence features
All of that sounds great, but the big selling point is obviously the pink model.
M4 Mac miniApple just dropped the new M4 Mac mini, a step up from its predecessor's M2-based configurations. M4 Mac Mini Credit: AppleIt's smaller, too, with dimensions of 5 x 5. Thanks to the M4 chip, the M4 Mac mini's CPU is reportedly 1.8 times faster compared to the M1 model. GPU-wise, it's 2.2 times faster. In terms of ports, you're getting Thunderbolt 5 for the first time, but only for the M4 Pro model.
It starts at $599 with 16GB of memory. It's available for pre-order now and it will officially hit store shelves on Nov. 8.
M4 MacBook ProApple rounded out its week of announcements with the M4 MacBook Pro, which starts at $1,599 for the 14-inch model and the 16-inch model starts at $2,499.
Same looks, new internals. Credit: AppleThe follow-up to last year's M3 model has nearly identical physical dimensions and looks (new Space Black color notwithstanding), but a couple of key upgrades. Obviously, the new M4 chip promises better performance and battery life, but you can also spend more to get more expensive M4 Pro and M4 Max models if you really need a boost. Aside from that, a third Thunderbolt 4 port has been added for extra display versatility, and the M4 Pro and M4 Max models get Thunderbolt 5 ports, instead.
Lastly, the default RAM has been juiced up from 8GB to 16GB. It may not look like much, but this is a better MacBook than before, at least on paper.

As of Oct. 31, get a 4-pack of Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 trackers for just $61.77 at Amazon. That's a 38% discount, and $38.22 off their original price of $99.99. You get two black trackers and two white trackers in this bundle. Alternatively, you can get a single tracker for $21.27 (black) or $21.22 (white).
SEE ALSO: Save $65 on the Amazon Fire HD 10 tabletThese trackers are super simple to use. Add them to a keychain or keyring and attach them to any items you need to find quickly. Register a new tag with your Android device and let it go, as it can stay powered up for up to 500 days, with 40% more power if you turn on the power-saving mode. They're IP67-rated with both water- and dust-resistance, so they'll be fine if you accidentally drop one into a puddle or they get dusty at the bottom of a bag.
These trackers are only compatible with Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets, so they won't do you much good if you aren't already a user, but they're super simple to set up and reliable for those on the ecosystem. Plus, they offer multiple ways to find lost items. You'll still want an AirTag for the most comprehensive search network, but this is a great, affordable pack of smart trackers that make sense for Galaxy owners.

Bumble expands Opening Moves shortly after launch
Months after switching up its ethos of "women making the first move," Bumble announces changes to its Opening Moves feature.
Since its inception in 2014, Bumble has been known as the dating app that only lets women message first (in heterosexual matches). But in the age of dating app fatigue — including hearing from women about the exhaustion of sending that first message — the app created a way for men to technically make the first move. Opening Moves are prompts only women can place for men to respond to (again, for heterosexual users), and Bumble introduced them back in the spring.
SEE ALSO: Tired of casual dates? Try the best dating apps for serious relationships in 2024Today, Bumble launches an expansion on the Opening Moves feature. Now, users can add up to three prompts for matches to choose which to reply to. Bumble users can now select a photo as an Opening Move, as well.
The app has received positive feedback since the launch of Opening Moves, a spokesperson told Mashable. Users appreciate the opportunity to have more ways to kick off the conversation and showcase more of their personality upfront, which makes it easier to break the ice.
Bumble's spokesperson said these updates are a direct result of user feedback. Chat initiation has increased by around 26 percent since the initial rollout of Opening Moves, with an around 77 percent increase in quality conversations globally. Bumble considers "quality conversation" to be one where both people engage with interest in progressing the chat, resulting in higher cadence and length of messages being sent, according to the spokesperson.
"By giving our members more creative, personalized ways to start conversations, we're seeing connections spark faster and more often," said Bumble's principal product lead Amanda McAlister in the announcement. "As dating continues to evolve, so do we, and these features allow members to match based on truly shared interests and start conversations that feel more authentic from the start."
These are the top Opening Moves thus far in the U.S., according to Bumble:
What's your dream vacation destination?
What's your ideal first date?
Date night in or date night out?
What's the last thing that made you smile?
What's something I wouldn't know from your profile?
In addition to these changes, Bumble also added the ability to filter matches by chosen interests displayed on their profile — and over 30 new interests to choose from, like memes, houseplants, and mocktails. Ninety percent of Bumble users have at least two interest badges in their profile, and 60 percent have five, the most one can set, according to internal data.
As some people lean away from dating apps, dating apps seem to be encouraging more "quality" conversations (as with Hinge's new cap on unanswered messages). For now, it appears that Bumble is doing the same.

The Apple Pencil has been a fantastic addition to the repertoire of iPad accessories since its debut. Earlier this year, Apple introduced the new and improved Apple Pencil Pro, with a slew of improvements that make it a great option for iPad owners. Perfect for doodling, taking notes, or writing, it's a must-have accessory if you own one of Apple's flagship tablets, and it's on sale today if you haven't already committed.
As of Oct. 31, you can get the Apple Pencil Pro for $92.99 at Amazon. That's a discount of 28% and $36.01 off its normal price of $129. It's compatible with iPad Pro and iPad Air models ranging from the 13-inch iPad Pro M4 model to the 11-inch M2 iPad Air.
It's well worth the upgrade, even if you already grabbed an Apple Pencil when it first debuted. This version has several meaningful improvements over its predecessor, including a variety of different brush or pen tool settings. Rotate the pencil to change your options, even in the middle of writing or drawing. You can even squeeze the pencil to use different tools or change modes while in use.
This version of the Apple Pencil is a much more precise tool overall, with haptic feedback that gives you the feeling that you're actually writing on paper for a more enjoyable writing or drawing session. When you're ready, you can recharge it by attaching it to the side of your iPad.
At this price, it's worth grabbing for your own tablet or for gift-giving over the holidays, so get it while it's hot.
The MacBook Air line-up just got an unexpected RAM upgrade — shop now
Apple's Mac Week has kicked off with huge announcements of the brands most powerful computers yet. The M4 chip, which we first experienced in the iPad Pro, is now coming to the iMac, Mac Mini, and MacBook Pro. But that list excludes one very important device — the MacBook Air. While the Air doesn't appear to be getting the M4 chip this time around, it's getting another crucial update.
The MacBook Airs have long been criticized for their starting memory of just 8GB RAM. The laptops have powerful processing with both M2 and M3 chip options available, however, the puny 8GB RAM starting point has never made the Air a great laptop for creatives. Apple has apparently been listening to the internet's gripes because it finally upped the MacBook Air's starting memory.
Now, all MacBook Air models start with 16GB of RAM, or as Apple calls it, Unified Memory. The MacBook Air is available witth the M2 and M3 chips, and both versions come in 13-inch models, but the M3 Air is also available in a 15-inch size. Despite the upgrade, the MacBook Air remains Apple's most affordable entry level option, starting at $999. All models now come with 16GB of memory, and are available for purchase at both The Apple Store and Best Buy.

Kieran Culkin reveals why he still hasn't watched the 'Succession' finale
Apple's M series chips are too good for their own good
What a week, huh? Apple just had three straight days of announcements: First we got the new, colorful iMac, then the most powerful Mac mini ever, followed by the grand finale: the new MacBook Pro devices with Apple's new M4 Pro and M4 Max chips inside.
All of these new machines sound great. Apple's M4 chips are among the best — if not the best — PC chips you can buy when you account for power drain and performance. And yet, I've never been less compelled to upgrade.
SEE ALSO: Here's where you can preorder Apple's new MacBook Pros with M4 chipsI don't even have a very recent laptop. My main workhorse is a 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip inside, and my wife works on a 13.3-inch M1 MacBook Pro. Neither of us ever feel the need for a more powerful machine, simply because the M1 and M1 Max chips, respectively, are already incredibly powerful.
I got the M1 Max MacBook Pro on a whim. Last year, it was discounted so hard at a local retailer that I actually both emailed and called to make sure that the discount was real. I thought it had something to do with the fact that M1 Max is a pricy, pro-grade machine, and that very few buyers were actually willing to dish out the full asking price for something they don't need.
It's true: I don't really have a use for 10 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores. I'm not a video graphics professional that runs complex projects in something like Blender. But the discount was there, and I got the M1 Max laptop because it cost less than the asking price of the M1 Pro just a few months earlier.
Tweet may have been deletedAnd let's face it, even the less powerful, M1 MacBook Pro is more than enough to handle my everyday tasks.
If you read Apple's promo materials, you may have noticed that the company no longer compares its latest products with the last generation, but the one before that. In the case of M4, the company actually skipped two generations back, comparing the chip with the M1 (Apple says the M4 Max is up to 2.2x faster than the M1 Max, for example). But you get those results if you push that chip really hard. If you have 20 Chrome tabs open, a few social media apps running, and a game of Hearthstone running in the background...well, it may be faster on paper, but I don't really see how as my current laptop handles everything near-instantly.
I am some kind of computer professional, and I am also a huge computer nerd, and for these reasons alone, yes, I'd like to have the latest, most powerful MacBook Pro. But honestly, this desire has never been more subdued, as I just know that I literally would not be able to tell the difference between my three-year old laptop and the new one.
It's hard to blame Apple for making chips so good that you don't have a reason to upgrade every year or even every three years. But it does make you wonder whether there are other things the company could do to make these new computers a bit more desirable. The Space Black color only goes so far, and you could get the last generation in that color (albeit only with the 16-inch model). Thunderbolt 5, a slightly better battery life, and improved display are nice features, but are they nice enough to replace your old MacBook with a new one for a couple thousand dollars? The main selling point for these new MacBooks is the chip, and if that doesn't convince potential buyers, these other improvements inside won't cut it.
Perhaps more colors are the way, or perhaps a design change is in order. Maybe the company needs to do something radical, such as introduce the oft-rumored, but never-really-close-to-production foldable, all-screen MacBook. In any case, I need a better reason to want these new laptops than just the chip, because the chip has been way ahead of me for a while now.

Apple's brand-new iPad Pro was revealed earlier this year, packing the powerful M4 chip, a thinner, lighter design, and an OLED display. With specs like that, it's no wonder it comes with a hefty price tag. However, we're already starting to see some nice discounts on a few different models, including at Best Buy.
Right now you can score a 13-inch 512GB WiFi model for $1,399, $100 off its list price of $1,499. That's not the only good thing about this deal, though. Best Buy is also offering some free bonuses with your purchase in the form of Apple TV+ for three months, Apple Fitness+ for three months, Apple Arcade for up to four months, and Apple Music for up to three months. That's a plethora of Apple goodies with your purchase, but the iPad itself is certainly worth it on its own, too.
SEE ALSO: How to enable Apple Intelligence on your MacBookWe had high praise for the iPad Pro in our review. Mashable's Kimberly Gedeon said that the new iPad "has mind-blowing endurance on a single charge. On top of that, the new iPad Pro is as svelte as a haute couture model." The M4 chip works wonders in this tablet, with Gedeon saying "the M4 MacBooks are going to be killer laptops if the M4 iPad Pro is anything to go by."
Don't miss out on this excellent iPad Pro deal at Best Buy. If the cost of this tablet is still too much though, don't worry, there are still plenty of great discounts on other iPads to check out. And with Black Friday on the horizon, there will be even more to look through during the sale event.
