Watch out, Google: Meta is reportedly working on an AI-powered search engine

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 17:48

Meta is throwing its hat into the AI search engine ring.

According to a report from The Information, Meta is working on an AI-powered search engine to power its Meta AI feature on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Currently, the Meta AI search function uses Google Search and Microsoft's Bing to surface real-time information about news, sports, and stocks. Meta also recently struck a deal with Reuters for providing news reports in Meta AI responses.

SEE ALSO: Meta is using your posts to train AI. It's not easy to opt out.

But Meta's reported development of its own search engine is an effort to rely less on its competitors' search engines, especially if the circumstances of the arrangements change. The rise of generative AI, plus a decrease in Google Search quality, has many users turning to platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity instead of traditional search engines. With Meta going all on its flagship Meta AI search function, the company hopes to get users searching on its apps, although some find the Meta AI search bar annoying and intrusive since it can't be turned off.

Meta's search engine team has reportedly been indexing sites and organizing them into databases for at least eight months. As previously reported, Meta quietly launched a web crawler in July to source information for its Meta AI training. This is similar to OpenAI's GPTBot, which scrapes the web for ChatGPT training data, and prompted many news sites to block the web crawler by adding a robots.txt line of code to its codebase. However, OpenAI and Anthropic were also found to have ignored the robots.txt block rule.

Apple finally dropped the M4 Mac Mini: Here's where to pre-order, including the Pro

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 17:43
Where to pre-order the new M4 and M4 Pro Mac Mini Apple Store Apple M4 and M4 Pro Mac Mini starting at $599 Preorder now

Apple's Mac Week didn't start and wrap up on a Monday, of course: The Tuesday (Oct. 29) of the event saw the arrival of the M4 and M4 Pro Mac Minis.

This drop was more anticlimactic than expected after Amazon leaked some specs a day early, but this major step up from the older M2 Minis is exciting nonetheless. Pre-orders for all configurations are live now at the Apple Store, with the 16GB Unified Memory and 256GB SSD M4 Mini going for $599, the 16GB Unified Memory and 512GB SSD M4 Mini going for $799, 24GB Unified Memory and 512GB SSD M4 Mini going for $999, and the 24GB Unified Memory and 512GB SSD M4 Mini Pro going for $1,399. All units officially come out on Nov. 8.

SEE ALSO: Apple just announced the M4 Apple iMac: Here's how to pre-order it

Just as we expected, these new versions of the Mini grew in power while shrinking in size. Now with dimensions of just 5 x 5, the cube-ish M4 Minis are essentially ridiculously-powerful desktops squeezed into an Apple TV 4K package. Despite losing physical space, the new M4 models absolutely school their predecessors in benchmark tests. We're talking up to 1.8 times faster CPU performance compared to the M2 (2.2 times over the M1).

SEE ALSO: Shop M2 and M3 MacBooks on sale before new models arrive

Those numbers are scaled up even further when "Pro" is added to the mix, partially thanks to the Pro's 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU (compared to 10 and 10 on the non-Pro M4 Mini). These marks will be particularly game-changing for those undertaking heavy projects in programs like Logic Pro, Motion, or Blender. The M4 Pro also wields not just one, but three Thunderbolt 5 port — a Mac first.

All M4 Minis also come with Apple Intelligence compatibility, opening up a world of possibilities with AI writing tools, image creation tools, and more, plus ChatGPT integration coming in December. The M4 Minis are also Apple's first carbon neutral Macs.

'Only Murders in the Building' Season 4 ending explained: Who killed Sazz and why?

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 17:39

That's a wrap on a very Hollywood-themed Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building!

After 10 episodes of A-list cameos, stunt man shenanigans, and the highs and lows of showbiz, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) finally caught Sazz's (Jane Lynch) killer. But in true Only Murders fashion, it's not long before another body drops, setting the stage for Season 5.

SEE ALSO: 'Only Murders in the Building' Season 4 finale hides Season 1 Easter egg

From catching our killer to theorizing about what comes next, let's break down that finale, spoilers and all.

Screenwriter Marshall P. Pope killed Sazz Pataki — but not for the reason you think Jin Ha in "Only Murders in the Building." Credit: Disney/Patrick Harbron

Like every season before it, Only Murders Season 4 is no stranger to red herrings. After all, the entire West Tower storyline ended up being an elaborate misdirect, while actors Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, and Eva Longoria's theory that that this murderer had been after our trio since Season 1 also turned out to be false. But in its penultimate episode, Only Murders Season 4 hit us with a softer red herring — one concerning Sazz's killer's motive.

At the very end of episode 9, "Escape from Planet Klongo," Charles, Oliver, and Mabel learned that Sazz's killer was none other than Marshall P. Pope (Jin Ha, Pachinko), the screenwriter of the in-the-works Only Murders movie.

SEE ALSO: 'Only Murders in the Building' Season 4 finale: Wait, what about those loose ends from Season 1?

Marshall, whose real name is Rex Bailey, was Sazz's stunt protégé — at least, he was until he burned director Ron Howard's eyebrows off in a stunt gone wrong on the unfinished film Project Ronkonkoma. Sazz blackballed him after that, replacing him with stuntman Glen Stubbins (Paul Rudd), which is why the Only Murders trio thinks Marshall murdered her. Turns out, his actual motive was to get away with stealing Sazz's screenplay for the Only Murders movie.

Why did Marshall kill Sazz and Glen? Jin Ha in "Only Murders in the Building." Credit: Disney/Patrick Harbron

As Sazz tells us in voiceover at the start of the finale, decades of stunt work was taking a toll on her body, and she wanted to find another way to contribute to bringing stories to life. That's why she wrote the Only Murders script, centered on her "hero," Brazzos himself, Charles-Haden Savage. Sazz brought it to Marshall, hoping to get some pointers from the other aspiring screenwriter she knew. However, his jealousy over how good her script was prompted him to disparage it, then steal it and sell it to Bev Melon (Molly Shannon) as his own. His biggest crime really was plagiarism. Just kidding, it's still murder, but this is a close second.

From there, Sazz heads to New York to tell Charles about the movie she'd written. Again, nothing here about the Westies or their involvement with Dudenoff (Griffin Dunne), just good old-fashioned Hollywood drama.

SEE ALSO: Every single 'Only Murders in the Building' Season 4 end credits Easter egg

Sazz did write a Dudenoff subplot into her script though, which is how Marshall knew he could get into the West Tower of the Arconia and snipe her from Dudenoff's now sadly empty apartment. (His pitch-perfect aim is a result of a traumatic childhood of being forced to hunt by his father, the basis of his unsuccessful first script.) Once he shot Sazz, he made it to Charles's apartment by creeping along the window ledge going around the Arconia's courtyard. Being a physically fit stuntman who isn't afraid of heights sure has its perks! From there, he disposed of Sazz's body down the trash chute where the incinerator awaited, with the whole endeavor taking less than 12 minutes.

Later, when Marshall realized stuntman Glen Stubbins could identify him from their overlap on Project Ronkonkoma, he tried to take Glen out with the same sniping method during a promotional photoshoot — where he accidentally shot Galifianakis as well (both survived). With Glen on the mend in the hospital, Marshall went to his ward to finish the job, so the connection between his new identity and his old one would remain concealed.

In Mabel's apartment, Marshall confesses all of his crimes to Charles, Oliver, and Mabel before trying to kill them, but not so fast! In a reversal of Sazz's murder, Marshall gets shot through the window from Charles's apartment. The culprit? None other than Jan (Amy Ryan), who's been living in the Arconia's secret passageways for months and finally saw a chance to avenge her beloved Sazz (and simultaneously save her former beloved Charles).

Sure, the cops arrest her, but when has that stopped her before? You can bet this isn't the last we've seen of Jan. After all, she asserts that she and Charles are endgame. What is this, Riverdale?

Oliver and Loretta's wedding goes great — until we learn that doorman Lester is dead. Teddy Coluca in "Only Murders in the Building." Credit: Disney/Patrick Harbron

Thankfully, some less deadly love is in the air at the Arconia in the form of Oliver and Loretta's (Meryl Streep) marriage. It's a lovely affair, complete with Oliver's dog Winnie serving as ring-bearer and Loretta's son Dickie (Jeremy Shamos) and Oliver's son Will (Ryan Broussard) walking the bride down the aisle. The only downer is that Loretta is moving to New Zealand to shoot the rest of her TV show. She tells Oliver to stay in New York though, because when has their relationship ever been conventional? And how else to give Streep an easy out if she's not up to return for Season 5? (Although I'd love to see her come back.) Or, hear me out, the gang goes to New Zealand next season for a Lord of the Rings-themed mystery.

SEE ALSO: Mabel has no love story in 'Only Murders In the Building' Season 4, and it's quietly revolutionary

Aside from Loretta's moving announcement, the wedding goes off without a hitch. But after the celebration, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel discover the corpse of doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca) in the courtyard fountain, continuing the Arconia's streak as the deadliest building in New York.

Lester hasn't been around much this season, but he did pop up towards the start of the finale episode to tell Oliver and Charles an interesting anecdote. He tells them he got married in the courtyard too. He'd shared: "Middle of the night, with just the stars and the fountain as our witness. I think it's good luck!"

Sadly for Lester, his luck ran out. (Oliver even foreshadows his death in their brief encounter, complaining that, "All [Lester] does is let in murderers!") But perhaps Lester's description of the marriage ceremony is a clue for next season. Speaking of next season...

Who is Téa Leoni's Sofia Caccimelio? Téa Leoni in "Only Murders in the Building." Credit: Disney/Patrick Harbron

Another clue for what Only Murders Season 5 has in store is the arrival of the mysterious Sofia Caccimelio (Téa Leoni, Madam Secretary), whom Charles can only describe as a "dame."

As she tells Mabel and Charles, her husband Nicky was recently reported missing, as seen on news report playing on a hospital TV in episode 9. The report described Nicky as "the dry cleaning king of Brooklyn" and mentioned his ties to the Caputo crime family. Despite this, police say they don't suspect foul play. Sofia thinks otherwise, asking for Charles, Oliver, and Mabel's help find her missing man.

When Charles and Mabel tell Sofia they aren't private detectives and only investigate Arconia-related murders, Sofia drops a bomb on them: "What happened to Nicky has everything to do with this building." What new secrets does the Arconia have in store? And could Nicky's disappearance be linked to Lester's death?

We'll have to wait for Season 5 to find out.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 is now streaming on Hulu.

If you're looking to buy a new smartphone for yourself or someone else right now, you don't have to stick to the latest and greatest models out there. Sure, a new iPhone or Samsung Galaxy device would be nice, but if you don't want to or can't afford to pay the hefty price tag that accompanies those phones, there are still some excellent options out there. And there's one that's a particularly good deal right now that can do the trick nicely over at Amazon.

As of Oct. 29, you can get the Samsung Galaxy A15 for just $179.99. That's $20 off its normal price of $199.99 and a 10% discount. The phone is unlocked, so it can be used with the carrier of your choice. This price applies to both the Black and Light Blue colors.

The Samsung Galaxy A15 is a great budget-priced phone that can still hold its own with many of its more expensive contemporaries, especially if you're already a big fan of the Android ecosystem. This model boasts a MediaTek Dimensity 6100 Plus processor, a 1080p 6.5-inch display that runs at a 90Hz refresh rate at up to 800 nits of brightness, and 4GB of onboard memory. Plus, it has a 50MP wide angle camera with a 13MP front-facing camera so you can snap like a regular shutterbug to your heart's content.

While the phone isn't as speedy as some of its competitors, for the price you get a reliable, hardy phone that Samsung is still providing updates for. It has a 5,000mAh battery that can last a full day per charge, it comes in two attractive colors, and it can handle just about any app you need, though you'll need to temper expectations when it comes to how powerful it is compared to the best and brightest Samsung models. Still, you could do much worse than this phone for under $200. It's well worth grabbing at this price, especially if you just need a new phone – and fast.

Save $100 on the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer and welcome luscious winter locks

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 17:16

SAVE $100: The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer in Prussian Blue/Rich Copper is on sale at Dyson for just $329.99, down from the usual price of $429.99. That's a 23% discount.

$429.99 Save $100.00 Get Deal

Some things in life are worth paying a bit more for. Comfortable shoes, a coat that'll last for years, that good organic chocolate, and a fancy morning coffee are all often worth the splurge. Dyson products almost always come with a price that makes them only reasonable if you're in the mood for such a splurge. But thanks to today's sale price, one of Dyson's most popular hair care tools is significantly marked down.

As of Oct. 29, the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer in Prussian Blue/Rich Copper is only $329.99 at Dyson, down from the list price of $429.99. That's a 23% discount and a savings of $100.

While the Supersonic is still at a premium price even with the discount, it's a really impressive hair dyer that could be great for some people. If you dry your hair daily and find it takes too long, the Supersonic can help speed things up. And if time is money, the premium price of the Supersonic might very well be worth it.

Dyson focuses on fast drying while protecting hair from heat damage. The Supersonic measures air temperature over 40 times per second, making sure the heat is regulated. The brand also mentions the Supersonic can help cut down on frizz and fly-aways, leaving you with smoother and shinier hair. When drying, you'll get four heat setting options, including a cold shot for setting your style.

The Supersonic comes with some extras too, like a presentation case, flyaway attachment, wide tooth comb attachment, diffuser, styling concentrator, and a gentle air attachment.

If you've had your eye on the premium Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, today's sale price will save you $100 as long as you opt for the Prussia Blue/Rich Copper colorway. While winter's cold and dry weather can often lead to less than prefect hair, the Dyson Supersonic might be a key to changing that up this year.

Apple just announced the M4 Apple iMac: Here's how to preorder it

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 16:59

UPDATE: Oct. 29, 2024, 11:37 a.m. EDT This post has been updated with preorder links to Amazon and Best Buy.

Mac Week is officially here, and Apple's kicked it off with an iMac announcement.

As of Oct. 28, the M4 Apple iMac is available for preorder, starting with 16GB of unified memory, 256GB of storage, and an 8-core CPU and GPU for $1,299. You can preorder the Apple desktop from Apple's online store, Amazon, and Best Buy, with the computer becoming officially available on Friday, Nov. 8.

The 24-inch iMac doesn't come with major upgrades from the M3 iMac, which was released almost one year ago to the date, after no M2 iMac was released in 2022. However, there are three major differences: the M4 chip, new colorways, and Apple Intelligence features the brand has been teasing out since June. On that last point, Apple also announced today that some of these features are already live for folks with more recent iPhones, iPads, and Macs, but even more will become available in December.

SEE ALSO: Every Apple Mac announcement so far

Like the M3 iMac, the M4 iMac supports up to 24GB of unified memory, 10-core GPU, and sports a 4.5K Retina display. As for how their speeds compare, Apple focused on the performance difference between the M4 and M1 chip (which was two generations back on the iMac). In its press release, Apple claims the M4 iMac is up to 1.7 times faster than the previous model — in the release for the M3 iMac last year, Apple wrote the "iMac with M3 is up to 2x faster than the prior generation with M1." While it's hard to glean how the two most recent models compare, one thing is clear: They're both faster than the M1 iMac.

M4 iMac users will also get a 12MP Center Stage camera, four USB-C ports, and the ability to connect up to two 6K external displays.

Amazon's best iPad competitor and our favorite budget tablet, the Fire Max 11 is back at its record-low Prime Day price of $159.99. That's 43% in savings. As Mashable's reviewer noted, "The Amazon Fire Max 11 has a large, 11-inch display and is blazing fast, making it a good alternative to pricier tablets for streaming and games." It also features 8MP cameras that support 1080p video, an upgraded octa-core processor, WiFi 6 compatibility, and a 14-hour battery life.

Today, on this random Tuesday in October, they're back down to that record-low of $99.99. That's 50% in savings. While we wish the Solo 4s had noise cancellation, we're willing to overlook it at this price. They do improve upon the previous generation with upgraded drivers, rebalanced acoustics, an improved frequency response, and better battery life (about 50 hours).

Dyson dropped our beloved V12 Detect Slim vacuum eerily close to 2023's Black Friday price

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 16:32

SAVE UP TO $220: As of Oct. 29, multiple Dyson cordless vacuums have significant markdowns at Dyson's website, including the Dyson V12 Detect Slim at $429.99 and the Dyson V8 Absolute at $299.99 (both $220 off).

Dyson is getting in on the pre-Black Friday deals action just like all the other big retailers. It's just not officially calling it that.

In the midst of Walmart announcing its Black Friday plans on Oct. 28 and Best Buy doing the same the week prior, Dyson is also giving us a sneak peak as to what to expect this November with an unnamed, but not-so-casual sale on several cordless Dysons. While Dyson doesn't shy away from dropping prices on its vacuums whenever throughout the year, these discounts are more intense than we're used to seeing on any random sale day, making them feel like a true nod to the upcoming holiday season.

SEE ALSO: Why Eufy's X10 Pro Omni is the most surprising robot vacuum I've tested all year

For instance, both the Dyson V12 Detect Slim and Dyson V8 Absolute are just $20 or $30 from last year's Black Friday prices, and the V15 Detect Submarine Absolute (the one that mops) being on sale at all is a rarity in itself. Unless you really want to wait and see if you can save a few more bucks come Black Friday, we say make the investment now and enjoy your new Dyson for an extra month.

The cheapest way to bring Dyson's iconic dust-highlighting laser technology home is through the V12 Detect Slim. And yes, the laser is worth the extra coin over the $299.99 V8 — hands down.

The V12 Detect Slim has been my ride or die since it first graced the floors of my apartment two years ago, and I'll recommend it to anyone who asks which Dyson (or which cordless vacuum at all) they should get. This is almost fully due to the impact of that laser I just hyped up, which illuminates tiny crumbs, fur, and specks of dust that the naked eye may not pick up on, but that your bare feet or allergies might. The laser is such a comfort that I actually use it in my robot vacuum testing to see what a botvac may have left behind after a cleaning run.

SEE ALSO: Shark vs. Dyson: Which cordless vacuum should you get?

The included attachments are also noteworthy, namely the mini motorized tool that is absolutely crucial in keeping up with furniture or carseats that pets sit on. If you're comparing the V12 Detect Slim to a Shark cordless vacuum in a similar price range, just know that I'd personally choose this attachment (which Shark makes you buy separately) over Shark's self-empty dock.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 threw everything it had at the murder wall, with red herrings, twists, and wild cameos aplenty. Easter eggs are the name of the game in this show, and in the season finale, there was a teeny, tiny throwback to Season 1 hidden in the dialogue.

Consider this your spoiler warning.

SEE ALSO: 'Only Murders in the Building' Season 4 ending explained: Who killed Sazz and why?

By the end of the episode, the killer has been revealed, allowing Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles (Steve Martin) to get back to finishing the Only Murders in the Building Movie — now with a great script written by the late Sazz (Jane Lynch).

Cut to the Hollywood actors hired to play the core three — Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, and Zach Galifianakis — filming a scene in Charles' apartment, as their real counterparts watch on.

The neat thing is, they're actually performing a scene from Only Murders in the Building Season 1, episode 4, "The Sting."

During their first-ever investigation of the murder of Tim Kono, Charles is falling for Arconia neighbor and bassoonist Jan Bellows (Amy Ryan). About to go on their first date, he asks his friends for advice on whether it's the right time for romance considering someone was murdered in the building.

"Isn't it insulting to flirt now?" asks Charles.

"Oh, who the hell knows? Suddenly it's rude to tell a secretary she looks pretty in a pair of slacks," replies Oliver.

"Nope," responds Mabel. "No to that whole sentence."

"Compliment her purse," suggests Oliver. "If it isn't on their body you can like it."

"No, again, to every word that's coming out of your mouth," says Mabel, who then turns to Charles. "I'm glad you're doing this. Being alone in life is making you a little weird."

As Longoria, Levy, and Galifianakis perform the lines, the real Mabel, Charles, and Oliver stand with Sazz's script in hand, watching the whole scene flow the way it should have — written by their friend.

Only Murders in the Building is now streaming on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ in the UK.

Apple ‘updated’ the Magic Mouse — and the internet is clowning the notoriously bad port placement

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 16:02

There's a new Apple Magic Mouse — and not everyone is happy about it.

Apple updated its mouse this week, selling a new $99 version that has precisely one major difference: it can be charged via USB-C now instead of Lightning. That should be met with universal praise, or at least one would think that.

Instead, however, the internet is pissed off because Apple changed the port, but kept the port's location on the underside of the mouse. This means you still can't charge the mouse while using it.

Here are just a few things social media users had to say about this.

SEE ALSO: What is Apple Intelligence? Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted

Of course, there were people defending the decision, too. The claim being made is that, on a practical level, this usually means leaving the mouse to charge for half an hour once every few months.

Tweet may have been deleted

Of course, there are other things to dislike about the Magic Mouse as well. Its lack of buttons is a big deal for a lot of folks, too. But Apple had a real chance to change the one thing most people hate about it — and didn't.

Play as Princess Zelda in 'The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom' for just $49.99

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 16:00

SAVE $7.96: As of Oct. 29, get The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom for Nintendo Switch for $49.99 at Woot. That's a discount of 18%.

$57.95 Save $7.96 Get Deal

The Legend of Zelda is an enduring adventure series that's been around since the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Usually, you take on the mantle of Link, the Hero of Time and work to rescue the beautiful Princess Zelda and the kingdom of Hyrule. But for so long, fans have asked to swap the roles and give Zelda a chance at being the hero for once. That actually happened this year, when The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom made its Switch debut. And if you haven't had a chance to experience it yet, now's a great time since it's on sale.

As of Oct. 29, you can get The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom for $49.99 at Woot. That's $7.96 off its normal price and a discount of 18%. This is the physical edition, so it'll have to be shipped to you, and it's a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

In this adventure, you take on the role of Zelda as she creates "echoes" of monsters and items she meets along her adventure to save Link and the kingdom. The Tri Rod, given to her by a fair named Tri, is her way to interact with the world as it can summon multiple monsters and copies of items. She can also use the action "Bond" to tie objects to her and move with her. Of course, she can also fight with a sword that gives her the daring new Swordfighter form. She's got everything she needs at her disposal to bring Link back, which will likely be a refreshing change of pace for players who have been asking to step into her shoes for some time.

Mashable reviewer Alex Perry praised its "old-school structure with new ideas" and "creative puzzle-solving" as well as its art style and great soundtrack: "Its aesthetic and music are endearing, the echo system creates tons of really clever puzzle solutions, and it harkens back to old Zelda games without abandoning what makes the newer ones special."

Grab yours now at a discount and jump in or hang on to a copy to give as a holiday gift to someone who may not have any idea Zelda finally took over the spotlight.

We know that it's still October, but Black Friday deals are kicking off. It's going to be a long holiday season. Thanksgiving falls at the very end of November, so you have to wait until November 29 for Black Friday to officially arrive. Walmart is hosting an entire month of deals so you can shop all month long. Meanwhile, other brands are just kicking off their Black Friday sale a whole month in advanced. NordVPN is part of the early sale crowd, launching some major savings on their services.

Among the services we've tested, NordVPN is the best premium option. While it has far more than the average VPN user needs, users who want maximum customization will relish all that it has to offer including a password manager, ad blocker, and anti-malware protection. It starts with three tiers of plans: Basic, Plus, and Ultimate. You can subscribe monthly or on a one- or two-year plan. Monthly plans are rather expensive, but users can sign-up for yearly subscriptions at a discount.

And those yearly plans are even better during Black Friday. NordVPN is offering 74% off two-year plans plus three months free. That covers you for 27-months of service. Deals are available on all three levels of plan. Basic plans are down to $80.73, while Plus is just $105.03, and Ultimate is $159.03. If you're not quite ready to commit to two years, one-year plans are also on sale for 63% off but don't worry — you still get three months free.

M4 MacBook Pro: All the rumors and leaks about the next-gen Apple laptop

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 14:29

The M4 MacBook Pro is on the horizon as Apple is expected to refresh several lineups with new M4 chips.

We got a sneak peek of the M4 chip's capabilities when Apple unveiled it alongside the iPad Pro. This was the first time Apple has injected an M-series chip into an iPad before a MacBook.

The M4 chip was officially introduced to us when the iPad Pro dropped earlier this year. Credit: Kimberly Gedeon / Mashable

We can't quite wrap our minds around why Apple would do this. Perhaps Apple wanted to give us a sneak peek of the M4's powerful capabilities before introducing it to the MacBook family. Based on the in-house performance numbers we got for the M4-based iPad Pro, the next M4 MacBook Pro will likely be equally as impressive.

That being said, let's take a look at all the rumors we've been hearing about the M4 MacBook Pro.

M4 MacBook Pro quick summary
  • 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro expected in late October

  • 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips expected in late October

  • M4 MacBook Pro will likely start with 16GB of RAM as opposed to 8GB

  • No significant redesign

M4 MacBook Pro

The M4 chip, as stated in the latest Power On Newsletter, written by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman (a respected Apple analyst and leaker), has enhanced AI processing and gaming capabilities. The M4 has already made its way to the iMac, but we're also waiting for it to house itself inside the MacBook Pro as well as the Mac mini.

Similar to the M3 MacBooks that dropped last year during the October "Scary Fast" event event, we're expecting the following M4 MacBook models this year.

  • 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 (cheapest)

  • 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro

  • 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Max

  • 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro

  • 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Max (priciest)

According to Apple, compared to the M2 CPU, the M4 processor is 50% faster. The Cupertino-based tech giant also claims that rendering performance has a four-fold performance jump.

It's also worth noting that, according to Bloomberg, the M4 MacBook Pro will likely start with 16GB of RAM as opposed to 8GB.

M4 MacBook Pro release date

According to Gurman, the M4 MacBook Pro is expected to drop during the tail-end of October. In fact, Apple is reportedly on a rampage and refreshing a bunch of its devices. As mentioned, it already unveiled an M4 iMac, but we're also expecting new M4 MacBook Pro models and new M4 Mac mini configurations.

The current-gen entry-level MacBook Pro Credit: Apple

This matches a rumor from Ross Young, another respected analyst. According to Young, who posted a leak on his subscriber-only feed on X (formerly Twitter), Apple fans can expect an M4 MacBook Pro release "later this year," he said.

According to Gurman, Apple is rumored to release a "new 16-inch MacBook Pro and both low- and high-end configurations of that laptop’s 14-inch model."

M4 MacBook Pro design

At least two Russia-based content creators claimed to have gotten their hands on the highly anticipated M4 MacBook Pro.

One YouTuber with the moniker "Wylsacom" uploaded a video claiming to do an unboxing of the M4 MacBook Pro. He appeared to have the 14-inch "Space Black" model, a colorway that was reserved for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips, excluding the base M3 chip. If this is true, then it looks like Apple will expand Space Black colorway to the base 14-inch M4 configurations (instead of just saving it for the pricier M4 Pro and M4 Max models).

The video also shows that the M4 MacBook Pro will feature three Thunderbolt 4 ports as opposed to two. Plus, as mentioned earlier, the starting configurations will be 16GB of RAM as opposed to 8GB.

We haven't seen any other design rumors regarding the M4 MacBook Pro, but it likely won't get a significant overhaul. As MacRumors said, behind the scenes, Apple is planning a MacBook launch with a new OLED display. However, this isn't expected until 2026.

How to watch 2024 MotoGP live streams online for free in the U.S.

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 13:24

TL;DR: Stream 2024 MotoGP races for free on ServusTV. Access this free streaming platform from the U.S. with ExpressVPN.

If you're not already familiar with MotoGP, we'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to a thrilling and unpredictable form of two-wheel racing. If you're looking for something that entertains over every single lap, without constant pit stops and yellow flags (we're talking about you F1), there really isn't much that can compete with MotoGP.

If you're interested in watching 2024 MotoGP for free from the U.S., we have all the information you need.

What is MotoGP?

MotoGP is the oldest established motorsport world championship, with the first season taking place in 1949. Races last approximately 45 minutes, without stopping to refuel or change tires.

What makes this form of racing unique is that the motorcycles are purpose-built machines that are unavailable for purchase by the general public. That means they are fast. Seriously fast.

When is MotoGP in 2024?

The 2024 MotoGP season features 21 races held all over the world between March and November.

How to watch MotoGP for free in the U.S.

Fans can stream every MotoGP 2024 race for free on ServusTV.

ServusTV is geo-restricted to Austria, meaning you'll be blocked if you attempt to connect from outside the country. That is unless you're using a VPN. These tools can hide your real IP address (digital location) and connect you to a secure server in Austria, meaning you can access ServusTV from the U.S.

Unblock ServusTV by following this straightforward process:

  1. Sign up for a VPN (like ExpressVPN)

  2. Download the app to your device of choice (the best VPNs have apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, and more)

  3. Open up the app and connect to a server in Austria

  4. Connect to ServusTV

  5. Watch MotoGP for free from the U.S.

The best VPNs for streaming are not free, but they do tend to offer money-back guarantees. By leveraging these money-back guarantees, you can watch MotoGP live streams before recovering your investment. This isn't a long-term solution, but it does mean you can watch select races without actually spending anything.

What is the best VPN for MotoGP?

ProtonVPN and CyberGhost VPN can reliably unblock free streaming services like ServusTV, but for streaming live sport, ExpressVPN is tough to beat:

  • Servers in 105 countries including Austria

  • Easy-to-use app available on all major devices including iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, and more

  • 30-day money-back guarantee
