How to block people on TikTok

Mashable - Wed, 06/18/2025 - 11:13

TikTok sometimes feels like a lawless land full of multi-layered discourse, trends, and unruly comment sections. And there are times when you need to set boundaries for your peace of mind. Thankfully, it's pretty easy to block another user on TikTok. Here's how:

Total Time
  • 3 minutes
What You Need
  • iPhone and the TikTok app

Step 1: Open the TikTok account you want to block

Unfortunately, you do have to navitage to the TikTok account that you want to block. For this example, I'm using TikTok's official account.

Credit: Screenshot / TikTok

Step 2: Click the share button

It seems a bit counterintuitive, but the next step to blocking someone on TikTok is to click the share button in the top right corner of their profile

Credit: Screenshot / TikTok

Step 3: Select Block

When you choose the share button, a popup will allow you to choose someone to share it with directly on the app. I have those blocked out here, but, trust me, they're there. Beneath that, you'll have the options for sharing the page outside of the app, by copying the link, sending it in a text message, or on another social media platform. Below that, you have four options: report, block, send message, and QR code. Click Block.

Credit: Screenshot / TikTok

Step 4: Select Block again

Once you select block, a popup will appear that reads: "Block [insert account]? They will not be able to send you messages, see your posts, or find your profile. This doesn't included extended scenarios like multi-host livestreams, duets posted by others, or group chats you both participate in. They will not be notified that you blocked them." Below this message, you have the option to click "cancel," or "Block." Choose "Block."

Credit: Screenshot / tikTok

There you go! You've blocked an account on TikTok. To unblock them, navigate to their profile and click "unblock." You can't miss it: It's in the center of the page in bright red.

Happy blocking!

I tried the futuristic Nuance Hearing Glasses. Do they pass the crowded restaurant test?

Mashable - Wed, 06/18/2025 - 11:00

Hearing loss is something of an epidemic in the United States, where the population is rapidly aging. Chances are, your hearing isn't as good as it could be. Maybe you're like me and you spent way too many hours in a way too small basement playing way too loud metal music without hearing protection (an admittedly extreme example), or maybe you merely spend too much time listening to your earbuds. Regardless, hearing health affects your quality of life, safety, and social life.

According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 20 people need treatment to address hearing loss, and that number will jump to 1 in 10 by 2050. Yet an astonishingly high percentage of us do nothing about this problem. Whether it's the cost of hearing aids, the discomfort of wearing them, or the social stigma, many people — like me — just live with it.

Personally, I avoid bars and other venues with a lot of ambient noise. When dining out, I often find myself staring at the people around me, marveling that they can actually, you know, hear each other.

What if a pair of smart glasses could also act as hearing aids, bringing you back into the conversation? That's the idea behind Nuance Audio. And after testing the brand's debut smart glasses and hearing aids hybrid for about three weeks, I'm ready to share my full Nuance Hearing Glasses review.

What are Nuance Hearing Glasses?

You may already be familiar with EssilorLuxottica. If not, they're the company behind brands such as Ray-Ban, Transitions, Coach, Foster Grant, LensCrafters, Pearl Vision, Target Optical, and tons more. Nuance Audio is a new sub-brand of EssilorLuxottica, and its mission is to put a functional pair of hearing aids into glasses. This way, a person can wear their normal eyewear and get all the benefits of hearing aids.

That's a noble and futuristic mission, which is why I first visited the company's booth back at CES 2024 (and again at IFA and CES 2025). I've been waiting for the company's final FDA approval and U.S. launch date to arrive, and now they're finally here.

Credit: Adam Doud / Mashable

I attended the launch event for Nuance Audio glasses in New York City last month. During the event, YouTuber iJustine served as an MC for the event, and hearing her describe the glasses, it sounded like she was reading from a script pulled directly from my own brain: What if you could sit in a crowded restaurant and follow along with the conversations around you? To me, that's basically impossible now. So when Justine talked about that scenario, I was stoked. Finally, I would be able to go to a dinner, ambience be damned.

So, do the Nuance Hearing Glasses really work? Yes, but they don't quite pass the restaurant test.

Attractive, unobtrusive hardware

The glasses are relatively non-descript. They have thick black frames — my wife calls them "Drew Carey glasses," and if we're being honest, that's fair. There are two styles of frames — Square and Panthos (which has rounder lenses) — and they come in either black or burgundy. The glasses themselves are fairly basic. Each frame has directional microphones at the front of the earpiece, a button on the bottom of the right arm, and two speaker grilles on the top and bottom of each earpiece.

Inside the box, you'll also find a foldable case to carry the glasses and a charging stand. The charging stand plugs in with a USB-C connection, and you lay the glasses upside down to charge them wirelessly.

You can get these glasses with your visual prescription, and the transitional lenses let them work as regular eye glasses or sunglasses, a very nice touch.

Credit: Adam Doud / Mashable Credit: Adam Doud / Mashable Hearing aids only

To use the glasses, you pair them with the Nuance app on your smartphone. I had mine paired with my iPhone 16 Pro Max, but you can use Android as well. Pairing the glasses allows you to set up your individual audio profile and adjust hearing settings as needed. One thing you cannot do is stream audio to the glasses like you can with the Meta Ray-Ban Bluetooth glasses. When I asked why that was, it came down to battery life and overall use case.

Streaming audio to earbuds/glasses can be draining. The glasses do pair to your phone via Bluetooth, but only so you can adjust settings. All the audio processing is done on the glasses themselves, so there's no need for a continuous flow of data between them. For self-explanatory reasons, Nuance Hearing Glasses are primarily meant to help your hearing, not let you listen to Spotify. These glasses have a different use case and different hardware. So, the lack of streaming audio is a bummer, but totally understandable, given the circumstances.

The good news: The glasses' battery life lasts all day, which was one of the goals Nuance set out to accomplish. I do wish the charging solution was more portable. After all, EssilorLuxottica also developed the Meta Ray-Bans, which charge in the case, and that solution was right there for the taking. I do appreciate that when you're wearing the glasses, the case folds down flat, which makes it much easier to carry than the Ray-Bans, so it's a good news/bad news scenario.

The software behind the hardware Credit: Adam Doud / Mashable

As to how they work, the glasses take in audio using the directional microphones on the front of the glasses and pipe audio into your ears through the earpieces. There are four presets you can use, cleverly labeled A, B, C, and D, in the app. I won't get into the nitty gritty to break down what each preset does, but they're designed to accommodate different scenarios.

The app also has volume control and other controls. You can change the directionality of the microphone so you can amplify what you're looking at or everything around you, depending on the situation. Overall, the app is very neatly organized and easy to navigate.

The button on the right arm is the power and volume button. Long-press the button to turn the glasses on and off, and short-press the button to adjust the volume. You use the app to do everything else, including setting up your personal calibration. During the calibration process, the glasses listen to the ambient noise around you, then play a clip of white noise. Finally, you're prompted to count out loud from one to 20. I'm not positive the personal calibration did a lot for me, but your mileage may vary, of course. There's also a standard calibration you can go back to at any time.

Mr. Roboto

When you're wearing the glasses, the sounds around you are amplified, generally within a narrow cone of about 15 degrees or so. If you turn away from someone as they speak, you'll lose the sound of their voice, so it's important to stay focused on them. The enhanced audio that you hear is a little robotic and has some feedback to it. Imagine listening to the world around you and hearing a lot of mid-tones and high end without the underlying bass.

It's a little like the audio equivalent of the sharpen tool in most photography software. Basically, when you use the sharpen tool, the software picks up the outlines of items in the photo, but at the expense of the blend that makes it all go together. As you progressively sharpen an image, it gets uglier and less natural. The same goes for the Nuance Audio glasses.

Everything you hear — including your own voice — is amplified, but also emphasized by cranking up the midrange and high tones. It almost sounds like there's a little bit of feedback coming through, like when you point a microphone at a speaker it's connected to. There's a very subtle ring to everything you hear. That can be a good thing, because it's emphasizing what you need to hear — voices for example — but it also gives everything an unnatural tone that can be hard to get used to.

So, when you're talking with someone, you can hear them more clearly, which is good. But the biggest disappointment circles back to my dream restaurant scenario. When you're in a crowded venue with music or a drone of conversation around you, these glasses don't really help a whole lot. I really wanted these hearing aid glasses to pass the restaurant test, and it's the one scenario where they just don't help a whole lot.

The most disappointing part Credit: Adam Doud / Mashable

I am not an audio engineer, but what I think is going on here is a combination of factors. First, the glasses pick up your own voice way too much. In order for the glasses to be helpful in a loud environment like a restaurant, you need to crank them up, but when you do, your own voice becomes deafening. The second issue is that these glasses don't have active noise cancellation, or if they do, it's not very good. The app has a section titled "Background noise" in which you can select lowered, standard, or heightened, but none of them really did much for me.

There are earbuds with ANC that don't form a good seal with your ears. The AirPods 4 with ANC are the most notable example, so I tried wearing these glasses along with my AirPods to see if they canceled out the noise while the glasses picked up the voices. I want to say the experiment helped, but it wasn't the magic bullet I'd hoped for.

The Verdict: A good first step

Here's the bottom line: The glasses need to do a better job at Active Noise Cancellation and at isolating and eliminating your own voice. When and if Nuance can solve that equation, we'll be in great shape.

As they exist today, I think they do an OK job at solving the problem they set out to solve. If you are someone who has difficulty hearing in all circumstances, including when you're in a quiet room, these could do a good job for you. But if you're hoping you can finally rejoin conversations in a noisy restaurant, you might need traditional hearing aids. Again, your mileage may vary depending on how your hearing loss has progressed. All things considered, my hearing loss is minor, so I won't need to wear these daily. I just wish that I could wear them when I head out for the evening, so I could get back to participating in those conversations I so sorely miss.

For a product that costs $1,200, I think that's a fair ask on my part.

6 Android Bluetooth trackers that work just as well as AirTags

Mashable - Wed, 06/18/2025 - 11:00

For a long time, Apple cornered the market with its AirTag, and for good reason. It works well, has wide support, and it’s even been used to track down stolen vehicles before. The only bummer is that you can’t really use them with Android devices, which means those folks need to find an alternative. That is why you’re here after all, so let’s not bury the lede any further.

What makes Apple AirTags great is a combination of three factors. The first is that Apple’s Find My network is vast, and AirTags can be found with the help of other people’s iPhones. Second is ultra-wideband (UWB) support, which lets AirTags talk to iPhones, other AirTags, and even Android phones to an extent. Finally, they’re inexpensive, at just $29 per tag, making them accessible to most people.

As of this writing, only one product truly replicates that Apple experience on Android devices. Still, even with other Android-compatible Bluetooth trackers, you can come pretty close, and the tech is improving all the time. So, if you’re ready to not lose your keys anymore, here are some Android Bluetooth trackers that work (almost) as well as AirTags.

Best overall: Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 Opens in a new window Credit: Samsung Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2, Pack of 2 $33.99 at Amazon
Shop Now

People with Samsung phones can get closer to the AirTag experience than any other Android phone user, and that is thanks to the Galaxy SmartTag2. In terms of features, it has the same guts as an AirTag, including UWB support, an IP67 rating, and it can be detected by nearby devices via Samsung’s SmartThings Find network. You can even make it ring, check its location history, and customize it to perform other, simple tasks.

The only downside is that Samsung’s SmartThings Find network isn’t quite as fleshed out as Apple’s Find My network, so you may have some trouble finding your tag in some areas. With that said, it’s better than Google’s Find Hub network (as of this writing), so it’s easily the second-best option. This is as close to a true Apple AirTag experience you can get on Android. You just need a Samsung phone to use it.

Runner-up: Motorola Moto Tag Opens in a new window Credit: Motorola Moto Tag $29.99 at Amazon
Shop Now

Motorola makes a tag as well, and it’s not half bad. In terms of price and features, it’s about even with the rest of the Google Find Hub-compatible Bluetooth trackers on the list. You can ring it to help find it, and it has a decent Bluetooth range, but the Moto Tag has some tricks that its Google Hub Find competitors don’t. The first is UWB support, a rare but modern feature that enables more precise tracking and positioning at close range.

The other is a little more nuanced. The Moto Tag has a companion app, and one of the features of that app is firmware updates. This is one of the ways that Apple and Samsung stay ahead of the pack, as they can improve their tags over time with better firmware. The overwhelming majority of competitors in this space don’t do that, which means the Moto Tag will likely improve more over time. If you want all the modern features like UWB and firmware updates, the Moto Tag is the one to get.

In third place: Chipolo POP Tracker Opens in a new window Credit: Chipolo Chipolo POP Tracker $29 at Amazon
Shop Now

Mashable Tech Editor Timothy Werth tested Chipolo trackers when reviewing the best Bluetooth trackers for us, and he came away favorably impressed. These trackers do everything they set out to do, Werth said, and with a splash of color. Plus, they have the added benefit of working with both Android and iOS devices.

Other than the Moto Tag, the new Chipolo POP Tracker is about as good as it gets. This one works with both Google’s Find Hub and Apple’s Find My networks. However, it should be noted that it doesn’t work with both simultaneously. That’s a shame because it would increase its tracking capabilities monumentally, but it’s still nice that it supports both platforms.

Unlike the Galaxy SmartTag2, Chipolo relies solely on a Bluetooth connection for its tracking, so there is no UWB support here. It does boast a Bluetooth range of up to 300 feet, which should be good enough in most cases. It also sports a speaker so you can ring the tracker, an IP55 dust and water resistance rating, and it comes in six colors. The biggest complaint is one that is fairly common. Google’s Find Hub network is less developed than Samsung or Apple, but Google has improved its network dramatically since it first launched.

The cheapest option: MiLi MiTag Opens in a new window Credit: MiLi MiLi MiTag $13.99 at Amazon
$14.99 Save $1 Get Deal

The MiLi MiTag is about as affordable as it gets in the Bluetooth tracker space. It costs a scant $15 on Amazon, which is lower than any other tag we could find. For the price, you get a Bluetooth tracker with a rated range of 500 feet, but no UWB. It also comes with an IP67 rating, a speaker so you can hear it, and a replaceable CR2032 battery. The company doesn’t make any claims on battery life, but most of these things can last a year on a single battery.

In terms of use, it works about as well as the Chipolo POP. You connect it to Google’s My Hub network, and you’re off to the races. Unlike the Chipolo, the MiTag doesn’t support iOS and Android on one device, but MiLi sells an iOS-specific version if you need it. In any case, it’s mostly the same pros and cons as the Chipolo. It works well enough on Google’s swiftly improving network while costing half as much as most competitors.

Another cross-platform option: Tile Mate Opens in a new window Credit: Tile Tile Mate, 4-Pack $79.99 at Amazon
Get Deal

The Tile Mate is one of the first Bluetooth trackers on the market, and it remains a solid option as a Bluetooth tracker. Most modern trackers fit into Apple, Google, or Samsung’s network, but Tile does things a little differently. It has its own network, which you access via the Life360 app, and thus, it works with both iOS and Android devices simultaneously. That makes it a good option for households where both platforms are present, since cross-platform support is apparently too hard for the other tech giants.

In terms of features, the Tile Mate is competitive. It can do the usual stuff like ring your phone from the tracker. You can also trigger a silent alarm with the SOS feature that alerts loved ones that you’re in danger. Its only potential issue is that the Tile network is arguably the least developed of the major competitors, so it may be difficult to find your stuff in less populated areas.

The one with light: Pebblebee Tracker Opens in a new window Credit: Pebblebee Pebblebee Tracker $34.99 at Amazon
Shop Now

The Pebblebee Tracker is another competent option in this space. Like most, it relies solely on Bluetooth without UWB support, but does boast a decent 500-foot range, which should make it easy enough to find on Google’s Find Hub network in most cases. For the most part, it’s more of the same for the Pebblebee. It has a speaker for sounding alarms, an IPX6 rating, and it also works with Apple’s Find My network if you want to go that route.

Pebblebee has two claims to fame with its tracker. The first is its inclusion of an LED light along the bottom that can help you find the tag in low-light conditions, and it’s one of the few options on the market with a rechargeable battery. So, instead of popping out a C2032 battery like most trackers, you simply plug this thing in for a little bit, and it’ll charge right up. On the downside, if that battery dies for good, it’ll be harder to replace. In other words, you can pick your poison, but in the short term, a rechargeable battery is nice.

There’s no doubt that the Apple AirTag dominates the market in terms of network reliability and usage, but Android phones are fast approaching. Samsung will almost certainly reach parity with Apple first, but Google is hot on its heels with a continually improving and expanding network of its own. Bluetooth trackers have that same vibe. Apple and Samsung are the clear winners, but the Moto Tag is equally good, and the other competitors are perfectly competent for their price tags.

Scientists spotted a giant comet spewing gas 2 billion miles from sun

Mashable - Wed, 06/18/2025 - 11:00

A strange, city-sized comet seems to have woken up early as it drifts toward the sun — even though it's still much farther than Saturn in space.

Using a giant Chilean desert telescope, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, scientists got a detailed look at C/2014 UN271. This comet, commonly known as Bernardinelli–Bernstein, is one of the largest and most distant ever detected, and it’s doing something no one saw coming. Despite being extremely far from the sun's heat in the freezing outskirts of the solar system, this 500 trillion-ton behemoth is already breaking down and releasing gas.

Scientists aimed ALMA at the comet in March 2024 and saw carbon monoxide — a gas that usually doesn’t show up in observations that far away — gushing out of its surface in jets. The team also picked up signs of dust and heat coming from its icy, 85-mile-wide nucleus.

It’s the farthest comet ever caught doing this in millimeter-wavelength light, which the ground telescope uses to look at cold cosmic objects.

"We’re seeing explosive outgassing patterns that raise new questions about how this comet will evolve as it continues its journey toward the inner solar system," said NASA's Nathan Roth, lead author of the new research, in a statement.

SEE ALSO: Ancient moon volcanoes made tiny glass beads. Here's what they mean. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Comets, known for their millions-of-miles-long streaks, are among the oldest objects in the solar system. These boulders of ice, dust, and rock are leftover from the early days of planet formation, about 4.6 billion years ago.

Astronomers often think of them as time capsules of the ancient solar system, perhaps holding the secrets of how primitive Earth got water and other critical chemistry to eventually spawn life. So far there are over 4,000 known comets that scientists continue to track.

As comets swing closer and closer to the sun, their ice disintegrates, converting from a solid to a gas in one fell swoop, skipping over the liquid phase. Their tails are made of vaporizing ice, dust, and carbon dioxide debris.

But this comet — still 1.5 billion miles away — is already active and has been for at least the past year, according to the new study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The findings show complex and evolving jets of carbon monoxide bursting from the comet’s nucleus.

"These measurements give us a look at how this enormous, icy world works," Roth said.

Bernardinelli–Bernstein has an estimated 3-million-year-long orbit, taking it about half a light-year away from the sun. It’s thought to come from the so-called Oort Cloud, a sphere of ancient, icy objects surrounding the solar system. NASA says this cloud remains a theory because the comets there have been too faint and distant to be directly observed.

Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein, with a nucleus roughly 85 miles wide, is the largest detected so far. Credit: NASA / ESA / Zena Levy (STScI) illustration

Bernardinelli–Bernstein is now traveling inward, with its closest point to the sun expected in early 2031. The gas coming off the comet mostly seems to be carbon monoxide, which can evaporate at low temperatures. Scientists also looked for formaldehyde but didn’t find any.

What's perhaps more intriguing than the gas itself is how it's coming out. The telescope's view showed that the jets of gas were spurting from different locations on the comet that shifted around over time.

Shortly before the team's observations, the comet had an outburst — a short, bright flash of activity — then calmed down a few weeks later. That kind of behavior suggests the comet has a complex, active surface with lots going on just beneath it.

As the comet keeps heading toward the sun, traveling into warmer regions, more types of gases might begin to escape. Scientists think methane could start to emerge soon, followed by other chemicals like ethane and perhaps ammonia or acetylene closer to 2031.

The researchers say the comet may provide a rare "window" into the composition of small Kuiper Belt Objects, ice-rock bodies orbiting the sun beyond Neptune, thought to be relatively unchanged over billions of years.

"As UN271 continues to approach the Sun," the authors wrote, "additional volatiles should be expected to activate, revealing the primitive chemistry preserved within."

Does Pixars Elio have an end-credits scene?

Mashable - Wed, 06/18/2025 - 11:00

Pixar is no stranger to end-credits scenes. Early Pixar films like A Bug's Life and Toy Story 2 featured bloopers throughout their credits. Later, the animation studio pivoted to end-credit tags that pay off running gags from the movies, like the reveal of Riley's "deep, dark secret" in last year's Inside Out 2.

SEE ALSO: 'Elio' review: Pixar's cosmic tale of friendship will cure your loneliness

So does Pixar's 2025 release Elio follow in its predecessors' footsteps?

It does! If you stick through Elio's credits, you'll get a mid-credits scene that serves as a sweet button to the film, which centers on 11-year-old outcast Elio (voiced by Yonas Kibreab). Elio wants nothing more than to be abducted by aliens, and luckily for him, he gets his wish. He's whisked away to the Communiverse, an out-of-this-world gathering of alien ambassadors. The ambassadors would love Elio to join them, but there's a pretty big catch: They think he's the leader of Earth. Can he fool them long enough to secure his spot?

In addition to the mid-credits scene, Elio also features a quick end tag that teases Pixar's next release, Hoppers. So be sure to stick around until the very, very end of the credits! Between these scenes, you'll be treated to more gorgeous artwork of Elio's story and of the Communiverse, as well as the names of all the incredible artists who brought Elio to life. You'll also see a Pixar staple: the shout-outs to production babies, which are always a sweet touch.

Elio hits theaters June 20.

The secret behind Macy Blackwell’s 2.2M TikTok followers

Mashable - Wed, 06/18/2025 - 11:00

You might know Macy Blackwell from her Christmas and Halloween DIYs on social media.

"I love the type of content I post," Blackwell, the Texas creator who has over 4 million followers across TikTok and Instagram, told Mashable. "Before it was even its own niche, I was doing these things just for my own family. I've always been into decorating for the holidays. I've always loved to cook cute meals and seasonally themed items."

She started creating videos about five years ago, first on TikTok and later on Instagram Reels, which is when she "was ready to make a go for it." She had been posting photos on her Instagram for a while, but it wasn't until she decided to start posting holiday DIYs that she decided to really jump into content creation.

"It's my true passion," she told Mashable. "I've almost never missed a day in the last five years for a video."

Mashable chatted with Blackwell about her daily posting, how she works with her husband to create grand patio displays, and why she loves the affiliate link influencer marketing platform LTK so much.

How Macy Blackwell gets it done Credit: Credit: Mashable composite: Zooey Liao; Instagram/ Getty Images/ LTK/ InShot/ TikTok How far ahead do you have to plan for holidays versus just regular content?

Very far ahead, especially when it's Halloween and Christmas. I already have my Halloween village up in my living room. I just did it a few days ago. Since those are my two main holidays where I really go all out, I want to give my community the absolute most I can. So I start really early, that way I know they're gonna get two to three months of a ton of content, a ton of ideas, and a ton of value.

Do you remember when you had your first viral video or post?

I did this pumpkin arch on my front porch in 2021. I thought it'd be really cute if I tossed this [pumpkin] up and then, when I caught it, there'd be a pumpkin arch behind me. And my husband and I — he helps me with the bigger projects — bought all these pumpkins, we carved them, and built the arch. We not only did the video I always try to do of a fun, theatrical version with music and the vibes, but we also did a version that's a tutorial. Both of them just exploded.

View this post on Instagram

I had 30,000 followers at the time, and then it went to 130,000 within a couple of weeks. And then it just kept going, and I realized, "Wow, people love this. What else can I do?"

I did a big Christmas arch full of ornaments. I dove deeper into the seasonal and the holiday content because I truly love that. That's my passion. And I was like, "OK, other people love this too." I pay attention to what went viral or what people were loving and try to give them more of that.

At what point did you realize that you could turn this into a full-time career?

It was probably in 2022, about a year after I had my first viral video. It's really easy to go viral and then not make a career out of it. It took so much consistency over that year, and at that time, I had no manager or anything yet, so I was directly emailing with brands back and forth, trying to even figure out, like, how do I price myself? Because it's a very gatekeeper-y industry, especially five years ago. There wasn't as much education about what to do as a creator or how to go about this, and how not to get taken advantage of. Then I got my manager, and then my husband left his job at the fire station.

How did you figure out how to price yourself before you got management?

Trial and error. I would just throw out a number, and then I realized, "OK, all the brands are taking it easily, so maybe it was too low." I had no pushback in the beginning. I used an affiliate link program, so I knew it was something that they wanted me to sell. I could see how much I was selling those items, and I understand that a brand's going to want positive ROI, [so] I know they're going to pay me less than what I can sell. I always knew I had to sell more than what I was asking for.

View this post on Instagram

So I started at that point and then would start pricing myself a little higher, and the whole time, my account continued to grow. I feel like Reels were taking off, everything I posted would get tons of views [and] bring more people in. It skyrocketed so fast. It was hard for my brain to keep up with the growth.

How much did you make from your first brand deal?

My first time, I got paid about $75. I was so excited. This is going to be my job. I would've never imagined how big this could get. I didn't realize people were making this kind of money. I'm so grateful that I get to do this as a job because I truly love it, and it's amazing.

Can you tell me a bit about how you got into affiliate linking?

I started sharing my outfits, and this was before I started making video content. I made sure my page looked like a blogger — at that time, that's what we called it.

Gotta miss the blogger days.

I know, I loved following bloggers. I applied for LTK because other influencers I liked were using that program, and they appeared to be successful from that. So I signed up for it too.

Affiliate linking is an awesome way to start building up your money and start earning creator income. - Macy Blackwell

The thing I love about LTK and affiliate links is that you get to pick the products you want to share. That's the difference for me. With brand deals, you choose if you want to align with and work with that brand, but with affiliate links, you could just do that all day with all different products. You don't have to be one brand specific. There really are no rules with affiliate links.

You don't have to say certain key messaging or any of that. And that's what made LTK so easy to integrate into my everyday life. I could wake up in the morning, show the pajama set I wore the night before, go down to the kitchen, cook breakfast, and show my little Tupperware set. So that's a good way to get started when you're not at the point where you're getting paid brand deals yet. Affiliate linking is an awesome way to start earning creator income. My husband had quit his job based solely on my affiliate link income.

Really?

This was before I had any brand deals, which came a little bit later. You blow up, and then it takes a while to get brands to trust you. I did the best I could with what resources I had at the time. And at the time, we were on a tight budget. I stayed at home, and my husband was a firefighter.

What percentage do you get off an LTK?

The percentages can be very small. The major retailers like Target, Walmart, [and] Amazon can be as small as 1 percent or 2 percent. They convert more easily because everyone's used to shopping at Amazon. But many times, some brands will offer 10 to 12 percent on a commission. Those brands are normally smaller brands.

What platforms have been most crucial to growing your audience?

Definitely TikTok. It all started on TikTok. Secondly, it was Instagram Reels. Instagram took a little longer for the video content to catch on. Those two platforms are really where I focus the most since I do mostly short-form content right now. I'm not opposed to dabbling in YouTube, but I know it is longer-form.

As a mom, how do you decide what to share versus what to keep private?

That can be tricky, and I know it varies from person to person, but once the kids were starting school, I realized, "OK, I don't want my brand to be dependent on my kids or on me being a mom because the kids are at school all day. They're not here. They can't really make content for me."

And then I was thinking of the long game, too. Like, they're going to grow up, they're going to go off to college or start careers or whatever they want to do, and it's just gonna be me, and I can't have all my content being kid-focused. So it's been easy to keep some of their lives private because they're not constantly in [my] content.

My older daughter doesn't love to be in it as much as my younger daughter. So if you see her less, it's just because she said, "I don't feel like doing it." I'm like, "No big deal." I let them decide what they wanna do. So that's why 99 percent of any of my sponsored content is just going to be me. Because if they feel like jumping in for a video, that's great, but it's never gonna be a forced thing. And as I've grown, I'm more mindful of how much content I put out there, and they're getting older, and they should have a little bit of privacy.

How many videos do you end up posting a week?

At least seven a week. I always shoot for every single day to have a Reel and a TikTok going up, and sometimes, there'll be two going up in one day.

Can you walk me through your creation process?

At the beginning of the week, I will write out all the ideas for videos I wanna post. From there, I will order all the items I need for that or make my grocery list. If I'm filming three days a week, I'm doing videos on Tuesday, three videos on Wednesday, and two more on Friday, or something. I divide it up. If I'm filming on Tuesday, I will film that video and edit it right that afternoon. And that will usually be posted on Wednesday.

View this post on Instagram

It's just me. That makes it really easy, because I don't have a team of people. I do have my management, but they're out in LA, and they're all virtual, and they help with the brand deals. But I do all of my own content. I film myself, I edit myself, I post myself. It's just me. I like it like that because I feel like I can be really light on my feet and quick, and I'm not relying on anybody else for help. Now, if I get real wild and I'm just like, "Oh my gosh, I have to do this idea right now," I will tell my husband, "We have to go to the store. We have to go to Home Depot. We have to grab this." And then we're doing it that night, and we're posting it that night. It depends on how excited I am about something.

What do you use to film?

I just use my phone. It's an old iPhone 13. I film everything on that. It's just this and a tripod. And I have a janky ring light from Amazon. It's worked for me up until this point.

What do you use to edit?

I use InShot.

On your phone?

It's an app on my phone. I use the paid version, so there are no ads, and it's not annoying. I realized I couldn't do it in the Reels app or the TikTok app. Once I started working with brands, they wanted to see previews, a copy of it without any text overlay. I wanted to make a clean video and then be able to transfer it to each platform individually and still have that raw copy.

View this post on Instagram Do you back it up on a hard drive?

I save and just hope for the best.

What advice would you give someone who's starting out in content creation and wants to build a career similar to yours?

Try to lead with value for your community. That's when things shifted for me. I always think about saves and shares. Create content that people will get excited about and want to save or feel so strongly about that they're going to share it on their Stories or send it to their friends. Before I post anything or create anything, I think, "Is this saveable? Is this shareable?" And create value with that. I also think it's important to be as original as possible.

Before I post anything or create anything, I think, "Hey, is this saveable? Is this shareable?" - Macy Blackwell

Pick a niche that you absolutely love and are truly passionate [about]. It's important not to jump onto whatever's trending that month. If you have to, think of how you want others to remember you on the app and something that you can see yourself doing five years from now, 10 years from now. Always begin with the end in mind and think about how your brand will be able to grow over time, and make sure that it works for you.

Stephen Colbert has a blunt reaction to Trumps new smartphone

Mashable - Wed, 06/18/2025 - 10:55

It's been around a decade since Donald Trump came down that escalator and changed the course of American history, and on Tuesday's The Late Show, Stephen Colbert explained that the president's Trump Organization "marked the occasion with a special anniversary grift."

"Yesterday they announced a new cell phone service, Trump Mobile, featuring this $499 gaudy gold tele-bomination called the 'T1 phone,' which for some reason is in quotes on the website — possibly so they can have plausible deniability when your 'T1 phone' turns out to be a 'foil-wrapped hash brown,'" says Colbert, referencing Trump's new and apparently "made-in-America" smartphone.

"This Trump Mobile plan is bananas, supposedly coming with a 'telehealth and pharmacy benefit' which the press release typo-tastically describes as '27/7 access to doctors' [...] 'all from your own homw'."

If you want to know more about the T1 phone itself and how it compares to the rest of the smartphone market, here's a comparison with the iPhone 16.

Trump will delay TikTok ban yet again this week

Mashable - Wed, 06/18/2025 - 09:02

President Donald Trump will reportedly delay the U.S. TikTok ban again this week, with plans to sign yet another executive order staving off its enforcement. If he does so, it will mark the third time the president has pushed back the ban's deadline, which is currently set for this Thursday.

SEE ALSO: Trump says he may delay TikTok ban once again

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared Trump's plans regarding TikTok in a statement to CNN, revealing that the president will sign a new executive order within the next few days. The extension will stay TikTok's execution for 90 days, longer than was previously granted in each of the two 75-day delays Trump issued in January and April.

"[T]he Administration will spend [the expected 90 day delay] working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure," Leavitt told CNN.

Trump previously indicated in May that he would delay the U.S. TikTok ban for a third time, repeating that he has a "warm spot" for the app and was working on a deal to keep it available.

It's still unclear exactly who Trump hopes will buy TikTok to enable it to remain in the country. Multiple candidates have put themselves forward, from YouTuber MrBeast to the U.S. government itself, though software company Oracle appears to be the frontrunner. Though regardless of who attempts to buy TikTok, Trump's sweeping tariffs on China seems to have killed the possibility of a sale being approved any time soon.

Why is the U.S. banning TikTok?

U.S. lawmakers have expressed concern about TikTok for years, claiming that the Chinese government uses it to spy on users (though there is no public evidence that this is happening) and accusing it of manipulating its algorithm to present China in a favourable light. Some legislators have also expressed desire for a TikTok ban in order to stop the spread of pro-Palestinian content.

Also known as the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), the U.S. TikTok ban requires its Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest from its U.S. operations if the app is to remain available in the country. Specifically, the ban demands that ByteDance sell TikTok to a company that the U.S. government doesn't classify as controlled by a "foreign adversary" such as China.

If ByteDance fails to do this yet continues to operate in the U.S., TikTok could be hit with a fine of approximately $850 billion, composed of penalties reaching up to $5,000 for each of its 170 million users within the country. While ByteDance's recent valuation of over $400 billion is no small chunk of change, it's still less than half of this gargantuan potential fine. This means ByteDance will be forced to shut down its U.S. operations unless it sells to an approved company.

Signed into law by former president Joe Biden, the TikTok ban was initially scheduled to take effect from Jan. 19. As this was just one day prior to Trump's inauguration, the White House made clear it would not enforce the ban during this brief period, leaving the matter to the incoming administration.

However, despite his own efforts to ban TikTok during his first term as president, Trump's views on the popular app appear to have changed. Preferring to "keep this sucker around," one of Trump's first acts as president was to issue a temporary delay on enforcing the ban, which allowed TikTok to remain in the U.S. until April 5. He then issued a second delay just one day before that April deadline, pushing the TikTok ban back until June 19.
