Should you watch 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later before 28 Years Later?
Director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland return to the zombie franchise they kicked off in 2002 with 28 Days Later to offer the franchise's third installment, 28 Years Later. However, the 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, didn't touch on the characters of the first film at all. So, should audiences rewatch these movies before diving into the next chapter of this undead saga?
28 Days Later centered on Jim (Cillian Murphy), a lone man lost in a post-apocalyptic London laid low by the Rage Virus, which has turned humans into flesh-chomping infected. The sequel, 28 Weeks Later, which takes place months after the initial breakout, focuses on a family of four whose reunion sparks a new breakout in a safe zone overseen by the American military.
Now, 28 Years Later follows a father (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his 12-year-old son (Alfie Williams), who scour a devastated United Kingdom for resources to bring home to their safe haven of a village. So how do these movies connect?
SEE ALSO: Review: '28 Years Later' is a triumphant return, one of the scariest films of the yearWe'll answer that, and tell you everything you might want to remember before sitting down for 28 Years Later. Fear not — no spoilers for 28 Years Later lie below!
Do I need to rewatch 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later to make sense of 28 Years Later? The short answer is no. This franchise works as an anthology, with each film focusing on a different family unit, be it Jim and his found family of survivors, the Harris family from the second movie, or Jamie, Spike, and Isla (Jodie Comer) in 28 Years Later. But there are some key details about the Rage Virus and the infected that are helpful to remember going in.
Plus, rewatching the prior films is a good way to get amped for 28 Years Later. How better to brace yourself for what Boyle and Garland have brewed for their intense return?
To catch up on how to watch them, check out New to Streaming.
What do I need to remember about 28 Days Later to see 28 Years Later? In 28 Days Later, the story followed London bike messenger Jim (Murphy), who comes out of a coma 28 days after the city has been ravaged by a Rage Virus that's turned mild-mannered citizens into rampaging infected.
This film, written by Garland and helmed by Boyle, introduced the Rage Virus, which takes only seconds to transform its victim into a new breed of zombie. Gone is George A. Romero's slow-walking undead. This infected person can run and isn't actually dead, so they can be killed by fairly conventional means — just avoid their infectious blood! Even a dead infected can be dangerous. Plus, they have no fear, throwing themselves full-bodied into any obstacle. So they are scary as hell as they run amok in metro or rural areas.
28 Days Later also introduced Jim's ad-hoc family of survivors, who learn through their rough time with a military squad that the UK has become a quarantine zone, with other nations surveilling to be sure it stays that way. Yet the film ends on a hopeful note, with Jim and his fellow survivors signaling a surveillance plane to show they're alive and uninfected.
The sequel's ending, however, is far from hopeful.
What do I need to remember about 28 Weeks Later to see 28 Years Later?Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Fresnadillo, Rowan Joffé, E.L. Lavigne, and Jesus Olmo, 28 Weeks Later offers flashier slaughter scenes and the inclusion of American military figures played by Jeremy Renner and Rose Byrne. But the focus is once again on a family, this one reunited in a safe zone on London's Isle of Dogs.
There, patriarch Don Harris (Robert Carlyle) is eager to reconnect with his children, Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton) — and also his wife, Alice (Catherine McCormack), the Typhoid Mary of the Rage Virus.
Basically, Alice is infected, but not symptomatic in the way of the rampaging killers. A medic onsite (Byrne) suggests that her DNA could be the key to a cure for the Rage Virus. However, before that science can cook, Alice has a saliva-heavy make-out session with her husband, which sparks a new wave of infection in the safe zone, chasing the kids and their American friends to seek another safe zone.
At the film's end, it seems the Harris kids will be OK, swept by helicopter to a safe zone in France. But the film's final image shows the infected swarming up from the underground trains of Paris, revealing the virus has hit mainland Europe. The only possible bit of hope is that young Andy appears to have the same genetic quirk as his mom, having been bitten but not turned. So, could there be a chance at a cure in 28 Years Later?
You'll see.
Scientists just expanded the search for rocky alien worlds with air
Astronomers have added two more exoplanets to a growing study aimed at finding out whether rocky worlds near small, faint stars might have air.
Scientists leading a high-priority observing program with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have added two more rocky planets outside the solar system to their shortlist. These distant worlds — LHS 1140 b and LTT 1445 Ab — both orbit red dwarfs. These stars, also called M-dwarfs, are smaller and cooler than the sun, but far more common in space, making them intriguing places to look for potentially habitable conditions.
The new pair brings the number of targets in the project, first reported by Mashable, to four, though the researchers expect to eventually look at about a dozen exoplanets.
The campaign will use Webb to look for signs of carbon dioxide, a heat-trapping gas, using a novel method for studying atmospheres, called the secondary eclipse technique. Meanwhile, the Hubble Space Telescope will focus on the stars themselves, studying their ultraviolet radiation output. Red dwarfs are ubiquitous in the Milky Way, but they’re also known for flaring and blasting out harmful ultraviolet light. That could strip a planet bare, leaving behind nothing but a dead rock.
"The answer for 'Are we special ... or not?' can start to be answered if we start uncovering atmospheres of these rocky exoplanets around M-dwarfs," said Néstor Espinoza, an astronomer heading the implementation team.
SEE ALSO: Scientists haven't found a rocky exoplanet with air. But now they have a plan. A rocky world, LTT 1445 Ab, orbits a red dwarf star within a three-star system about 22 light-years away. Credit: ESO / M. Kornmesser illustration Exoplanets targeted for atmosphere studyLTT 1445 Ab is roughly the size of Earth and about 22 light-years away in the constellation Eridanus. The exoplanet orbits the star LTT 1445 A, which, in turn, orbits two other stars in a triple-star system. LHS 1140 b is a bit larger and heavier than Earth, located about 49 light-years away in the constellation Cetus.
Both were discovered within the past eight years, but LHS 1140 b was the focus of a recent Webb study that suggested the planet could have an ocean half the size of the Atlantic and maybe even a thick, nitrogen-rich atmosphere like Earth.
"We'll need more JWST observations to verify an atmosphere," said Ryan MacDonald, one of the study's coauthors, on X last year, "but LHS 1140b is looking like one of the most promising potentially habitable super-Earths."
These two selected exoplanets join GJ 3929 b and LTT 1445 Ac, a sibling to LTT 1445 Ab within the same star system, in the Rocky Worlds program. The first observations could begin as early as the end of this week.
There's a key difference between the first four targets and Earth: These alien worlds are so close to their stars, their years are only a few Earth-days long. That may not be a problem, given that their host stars aren't as hot as the sun, but could atmospheres even survive the constant barrage of harsh radiation? Getting to the bottom of that fundamental question is why this program exists, Espinoza told Mashable.
"If we end up finding that these M-dwarfs have atmospheres, then immediately the likelihood of maybe life can emerge in M-dwarfs is more likely there than here," he said, comparing them to our own solar system, "perhaps because you will have many more possibilities of generating different types of atmospheres."
An exoplanet, LHS 1140 b, may have a thick atmosphere, allowing an ocean to pool on its surface. Credit: B. Gougeon / Université de Montréal illustrationScientists have found signs of atmospheres surrounding many of the 5,900 exoplanets discovered so far, but all of them have surrounded gas giant planets, like Jupiter, with air mostly made of hydrogen. The hunt for a more terrestrial world shielded by a protective atmosphere has so far eluded astronomers.
Jennifer Lotz, who directs Webb and Hubble's operations at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, decided last year to initiate the rocky exoplanet survey using the director's discretionary time, the same way revolutionary science campaigns like the Hubble deep field images came to fruition.
Secondary eclipse technique explainedWebb usually observes exoplanets through transmission spectroscopy, a technique for studying what molecules are present in an atmosphere by analyzing how starlight filters through it. But that method has had its drawbacks. If the starlight were completely uniform, that would be one thing, but red dwarf stars can get sunspots, causing variability in the signals. This problem, called stellar contamination, has recently led Webb scientists to embrace another technique, known as secondary eclipse observations.
With secondary eclipses, it's a game of hide-and-seek. Scientists measure the signals of the red dwarf and planet when they're next to each other in space from the telescope's vantage point. Then, when the planet travels behind the star, scientists collect the star's signal alone while the planet is blocked. By subtracting the star from the total, the researchers can then isolate the light coming from the planet. Teams will use a particular wavelength filter that can detect carbon dioxide, thought to be a likely atmospheric gas.
Scientists will also take thermal measurements to get an early sense of whether an atmosphere could be present. If the temperature is lower than expected, it's a strong indication that a thick atmosphere is distributing energy from the planet's dayside — the hemisphere facing the star — to the nightside.
More targets are expected to be announced before October, when the next round of telescope proposals is due.

10. KPop Demon HuntersThe incredibly titled KPop Demon Hunters is what happens when you blend K-pop and fantasy animation under the direction of Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. The film hinges around K-pop stars and secret demon hunters Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), who find themselves up against a demonic boy band between stadium shows.
Squid Game's Lee Byung-hun, K-drama star Ahn Hyo-seop, Avatar: The Last Airbender's Daniel Dae Kim, and Crazy Rich Asians' Ken Jeong also voice characters. Plus, TWICE members Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung created a song for the film. I'm running out of names to drop here! — Shannon Connellan, UK Editor
Starring: Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun
How to watch: KPop Demon Hunters debuts on Netflix on June 20.
9. We Were LiarsThe highly anticipated TV adaptation of E. Lockhart's We Were Liars hits Prime Video this week. Will it impress fans of the best-selling YA sensation?
Like its source material, We Were Liars centers on Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind), a wealthy teenager who spends every summer with her family on her grandfather's Martha's Vineyard-esque island. Also on the island are her cousins Mirren (Esther McGregor) and Johnny (Joseph Zada), along with her best friend Gat (Shubham Maheshwari). Collectively these four are known as "the Liars." But when Candace suffers a mysterious head injury and loses her memories of one summer, the Liars grow distant. Will Cadence be able to remember what happened to her and the Liars that fateful summer?
Despite its beloved source material, We Were Liars is an unfortunately middle-of-the-road YA adaptation. The TV format does little favors to We Were Liars' climactic twist either, dragging out a reveal that becomes too obvious, too early on. — Belen Edwards, Entertainment Reporter
Starring: Emily Alyn Lind, Shubham Maheshwari, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Rahul Kohli, and David Morse
How to watch: We Were Liars is now streaming on Prime Video.
8. The Waterfront, Season 1Dawson's Creek creator Kevin Williamson delivers a gritty crime thriller with his latest show The Waterfront, about a North Carolina family whose fishing empire is on a downward spiral. The family in question is the Buckleys, who have ruled the town of Havenport for decades. But when patriarch Harlan (The Iron Claw's Holt McCallany) suffers two heart attacks, his wife Belle (Maria Bello) and son Cane (Jake Weary) take some creative — but dangerous — risks in order to keep the family business afloat.
With its family empire, rural setting, and web of criminal activity, The Waterfront feels like Netflix's attempt to recreate the success of Ozark. Yet its paper-thin characters and clichéd family dynamics water down its potential. It does get bonus points for attempted shark murder though! — B.E.
Starring: Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, and Brady Hepner
How to watch: The Waterfront is now streaming on Netflix.
7. A King Like MeFollowing its premiere at last year's SXSW, A King Like Me is making its way to Netflix. Directed by Matthew Henderson, the documentary examines the history and legacy of the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, New Orleans' oldest Black Mardi Gras carnival organisation or krewe, founded in 1901. As historian, author, and NOIR 'N NOLA founder Cierra Chenier wrote for Essence in 2024, "Black New Orleanians have created and preserved their own Carnival traditions for centuries despite attempts at exclusion throughout history." Using archival footage and new interviews filmed by Henderson, the documentary aims to delve into the 100-year history of this powerful community krewe right up until its crucial role today. — S.C.
How to watch: A King Like Me is now streaming on Netflix.
6. A Minecraft MovieA Minecraft Movie comes to HBO Max this week, which means you can scream, shout, and throw your popcorn around to "chicken jockey" from the comfort of your own home. Director Jared Hess brings Mojang's massively popular sandbox game to the screen, transporting viewers to Minecraft's cube-only Overworld alongside a group of four newbies (Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen). These four encounter Piglins, Creepers, and of course, Minecraft mainstay Steve (Jack Black) over the course of their epic (and blocky) journey.
Despite its focus on the power of imagination, A Minecraft Movie is a fairly by-the-book adventure movie with an overstuffed plot and tons of Easter eggs from the game. For game fans, the latter will be the main appeal. As Mashable contributor Kimber Myers wrote in her review, "No one in the audience is here for the plot. They’re either watching A Minecraft Movie for their love of the Minecraft world or because they love someone who loves it and isn’t old enough to drive themselves to the movie theater. As far as video game adaptations and children’s films go, A Minecraft Movie is so much better than it needs to be." — B.E.
Starring: Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge
How to watch: A Minecraft Movie debuts on HBO Max on June 20.
5. The Buccaneers, Season 2You might have ventured into The Buccaneers' first season to satiate your thirst between seasons of Bridgerton without expecting much. However, this Regency romantic drama created by Katherine Jakeways, based on Edith Wharton's final novel, quickly found its own footing, offering diabolical narrative twists, long-simmering love stories, and a Taylor Swift-packed anachronistic soundtrack.
And now, it's back for a second season on Apple TV+, with the show's core American expats — Nan St. George (Kristine Froseth), Jinny St. George (Imogen Waterhouse), Lizzy Elmsworth (Aubri Ibrag), Mabel Elmsworth (Josie Totah), Conchita Closson (Alisha Boe), and Lady Brightlingsea (Fenella Woolgar) — all returning. But where these England newcomers felt like fish out of water last season, they're now either in positions of immense power or on the run. Drama will ensue!* — S.C.
Starring: Kristine Froseth, Alisha Boe, Matthew Broome, Josh Dylan, Barney Fishwick, Aubri Ibrag, Guy Remmers, Mia Threapleton. Josie Totah, Imogen Waterhouse, and Christina Hendricks
How to watch: The Buccaneers Season 2 premiered June 18 on Apple TV+, with new episodes every Wednesday.
4. The Gilded Age, Season 3The immaculately dressed upper echelons of American society return to the screen as Julian Fellowes' The Gilded Age embarks upon its third season. Season 2 of the Downton Abbey creator's HBO show saw fortunes lost and gained, proposals made and rejected, and the simmering social tensions of late 1800s New York City hit boiling point. This season, the stakes are higher than ever, and the very idea of the American Dream is rapidly shifting. — S.C.
Starring: Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson, Blake Ritson, Thomas Cocquerel, Simon Jones, Jack Gilpin, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski
How to watch: The Gilded Age Season 3 premieres June 22 on HBO Max.
3. SallySally Ride made history as an American astronaut, not only as a woman in a field dominated by men, but also as a queer woman who became a national hero in a time when being openly gay was a harrowing prospect.
Written and directed by Cristina Costantini, Sally tackles all of this and more. Interviews with Ride's friends and colleagues bring context to the late icon's everyday life, childhood, sexuality, and journeys both personal and professional. Archival footage and interviews also give an insight into Ride's experience, as well as how she was treated differently from her male counterparts.
If you need something inspiring right now, don't miss Sally. — Kristy Puchko, Entertainment Editor
How to watch: Sally is now streaming on National Geographic, Hulu, and Disney+.
2. Love MeKristen Stewart and Steven Yeun star as will-they-won't-they lovers on a post-apocalyptic Earth in Love Me. But not like you might expect, considering these actors.
Written and directed by Sam Zuchero and Andy Zuchero, Love Me is a romance not between two impossibly beautiful humans, but between two AI robots who cross paths long after humanity's left the chat. One is a buoy programmed to learn. The other is a satellite equipped with a deep vault of information about mankind — including the cached videos of a couple of influencers who relish silly onesies, date night, Friends, and Blue Apron.
SEE ALSO: 'Love Me' review: Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun explore love at the end of the worldNaturally, these long-dead lovers become the model upon which robots try to understand relationships. It may sound bonkers or even cynical. But, incredibly, Love Me is warm, funny, and occasionally shocking, finding not only the humanity in its AI bots, but also what's real in the virtual.* — K.P.
Starring: Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun
How to watch: Love Me is now available for rental or purchase on Prime Video.
1. 28 Days LaterIn 2002, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland forever changed the landscape of zombie movies with 28 Days Later. In this post-apocalyptic horror-thriller, a Rage Virus has run rampant through London, turning average citizens into flesh-craving infected. And bike messenger Jim (Cillian Murphy) has a rude awakening from a month-long coma when he rises to this new, grim reality.
Boyle's kinetic energy fuels 28 Days Later, while Garland's script takes its motley crew of survivors (Naomie Harris, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson) through some truly twisted turns. It's as electrifying now as it was when it first hit theaters with the force of a zombie onslaught. And rewatching this box office hit is a great way to re-acquaint yourself with the world of the Rage Virus and the infected ahead of Boyle and Garland's return to the franchise with 28 Years Later. — K.P.
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson
How to watch: 28 Days Later is now streaming on Pluto TV.
Honorable mention: 28 Weeks LaterFor the 2007 sequel to 28 Days Later, Boyle and Garland stepped away, replaced at the helm by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, with a script by Fresnadillo, Rowan Joffe, E.L. Lavigne, and Jesus Olmo.
The characters from the first film don't resurface. Instead, 28 Weeks Later follows Don Harris (Robert Carlyle) as he reunites with his children (Imogen Poots and Mackintosh Muggleton) in a NATO quarantine camp run by U.S. military. A deeply cynical movie, this sequel shows how one sentimental move can essentially bring down absolute mayhem. Full of wild slaughter, including a scene where a helicopter blade treats the infected like a lawnmower treats a blade of overgrown grass, this movie is definitely flashier and more ferocious than the first. But it lacks Boyle's energy and Garland's keen storytelling. —K.P.
Starring: Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Catherine McCormack, Mackintosh Muggleton, Imogen Poots, and Idris Elba
How to watch: 28 Weeks Later is now streaming on Tubi.

The 6 biggest cybersecurity breaches of 2025 so far
2025 is now halfway through, and we have a pretty good idea of what the biggest tech trends will be. AI, cryptocurrency, and AR/VR are just some of the fast-developing technologies that have defined the year so far.
However, there's one tech trend that has continued to flourish year after year, unfortunately: Data breaches.
As more of our lives (and our data) shifts online, data breaches are getting bigger and affecting even more users. Plus, there are some concerning new cybersecurity trends, changing how leaked data spreads.
With half of 2025 left to go, Mashable takes a look at the biggest data breaches to be aware of in 2025 — so far.
The Coinbase bribes and ransomCoinbase, the biggest cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., announced last month that it had suffered a data breach that affected nearly 70,000 customers.
While customer usernames, passwords, and crypto wallets weren't affected, a slew of other sensitive data was. Hackers obtained customer names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, photos of government IDs (such as driver's licenses and passports), and the last four digits of social security numbers. The hackers were also able to access some user account data, such as balance snapshots and transaction history.
This leaked information could also allow bad actors to socially engineer users and trick them into believing they're talking to a Coinbase employee. Coinbase understood this latter point as well, as the company offered to reimburse any users who lost funds in this way.
The Coinbase data breach was a particularly brazen cybersecurity incident, as the hackers demanded tens of millions of dollars in ransom in exchange for not leaking the stolen data. (Instead of paying the ransom, Coinbase instead announced in a blog post it was "establishing a $20 million reward fund for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the criminals responsible for this attack.")
The Coinbase data breach should sound alarms for non-crypto users as well, once they understand exactly how the hackers gained access to the company's systems. Hackers bribed Coinbase-contracted overseas customer service agents to breach the company's systems and gain access to user information. This sort of intrusion can happen to any company.
The Hertz hack reveals extent of third-party vulnerabilities Credit: amgun / iStock / Getty Images PlusThe Coinbase breach was certainly unique; however, targeting third-party employees and systems has become a major throughpoint connecting some of the biggest hacks of 2025.
In February, for example, the popular food ordering service Grubhub announced a data breach that affected both its customers and drivers. Hackers were able to gain access to a variety of different personal data, ranging from names, email addresses, and phone numbers to partial payment card data. The intrusion happened through a third-party service used by Grubhub's customer support team.
Similarly, some customers of the car rental service Hertz had their data stolen as the result of a vulnerability found in Cleo, a third-party file-sharing service used by the company. Hackers were able to steal not only names, contacts, birth dates, credit cards, and driver's license information, but also even more sensitive data from car accident claims, including social security numbers, government IDs, and medical details.
Cases like these showed that even if you trust a company with your personal data, they're sharing the information with other third parties that you've never even heard of.
Password managers under attackOne of the worst data breaches ever occurred nearly three years ago, and its reverberations are still being felt in 2025.
Back in 2022, password manager LastPass suffered a massive breach when a cybercriminal stole login credentials for one of the four DevOps engineers who had access to the description keys for the company's cloud storage service. The still-anonymous hacker was able to infiltrate LastPass for months, completely undetected, even after LastPass thought it had dealt with the breach.
Now, in 2025, U.S. officials are investigating a number of cryptocurrency-related crimes that they believe the LastPass data breach made possible, according to Bleeping Computer. That includes at least one $150 million heist.
The success of the LastPass data breach appears to have set a nefarious new trend into motion: Bad actors are now explicitly targeting password managers.
Cybersecurity firm Picus Security shared a new report earlier this year that found that cyberattacks on password managers have tripled compared to 2024. The company's researchers discovered that out of more than a million types of malware, 25 percent of them were specifically targeting password managers.
It appears that, in 2025, cybercriminals have discovered that breaking into a service like LastPass gives them not just a login credential to a single service but the keys to the entire kingdom.
Hackers play the hitsIt appears that even hackers need reminders, and that's exactly what this 2025 cybersecurity trend provides them.
This year has seen quite a few cases of older data leaks repackaged with updated or entirely new information and re-released, once again putting previously stolen data back on cybercriminals' radar.
For example, just earlier this month, a hacker leaked 86 million AT&T customer records, which included names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, and social security numbers. However, according to AT&T, their systems had not been compromised, at least not recently. The company told Mashable that an internal investigation revealed that the leak contained only previously leaked materials from last year's Snowflake hack. AT&T released a statement saying, "it is not uncommon for cybercriminals to re-package previously disclosed data for financial gain."
Credit: Photo by Smith Collection/Gado/Getty ImagesMashable reported on one of the biggest data leaks, the RockYou2024 leak, last year. Like the AT&T leak, the hacker behind this incident exposed nearly 10 billion credentials simply by compiling previous leaks together and updating them with the latest leaked info.
Similarly, just last month, cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler discovered a publicly available, unencrypted database including the sensitive login credentials for more than 184 million accounts for a wide variety of platforms. Passwords for Google accounts, Facebook and Instagram accounts, and even Microsoft products were discovered in this database. One social media platform included in the database, Snapchat, said it had not uncovered any unauthorized access in its systems. This likely means that this database of leaked user information was likely compiled through multiple intrusions, directly at the user level, likely due to malware.
This concerning new cybersecurity trend shows that data stolen years ago can potentially come back to haunt you.
A potential X data leakX, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has certainly changed since Elon Musk took over the platform. It's also faced new cybersecurity issues.
Earlier this year, a user on a prominent hacking forum claimed to have sensitive information, such as email addresses and other potentially revealing metadata, for hundreds of millions of X users. While no login credentials were leaked, the information shared was concerning because it could be used in other nefarious ways, such as being able to uncover an anonymous account. This might seem like much of a concern in the context of annoying trolls.
Credit: Nathan Stirk/Getty ImagesHowever, this metadata, which reportedly included account creation dates, locations, and current and former display names, could be potentially life-threatening for political dissidents in countries with harsh punishments for dissent.
Mashable wasn't able to independently verify the veracity of the leak, but the cybersecurity investigators at Safety Detectives say they were able to verify some of the data.
DOGE wants you(r) dataSpeaking of Elon Musk, his Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, has the potential to be one of the biggest cybersecurity issues of our time.
We know DOGE embedded itself in numerous government agencies, at times accessing sensitive data. We know DOGE installed Starlink terminals at the White House and bypassed the usual security protocols in doing so (per the New York Times). We know that Musk hired young techies who idolize the billionaire in order to carry out DOGE's mission. (These individuals include then-25-year-old Marko Elez, who had previously published numerous racist posts, and 19-year-old Edward Coristine, also known as Big Balls.)
While Musk has been feuding with his now-former(?) ally, President Donald Trump, the public still doesn't know exactly what information DOGE had access to. More recently, the New York Times also reported that the Trump administration would like the secretive surveillance company Palantir to centralize data on American citizens into one centralized database. Per the Times, Palantir was chosen partly on Musk and DOGE's recommendation.

Watch SpaceXs Starship explode in giant fireball during latest test
SpaceX's Starship has experienced another "rapid unscheduled disassembly," exploding in a spectacularly large fireball on Wednesday night. The vehicle didn't even get off the ground this time either.
SEE ALSO: SpaceX's ninth Starship test flight ends in another explosionThe enormous explosion occurred at SpaceX's Starbase launch site in Brownsville, Texas, where Starship 36 had been undergoing its second routine static fire test. Such tests are trial runs of a vehicle's launch system, fuelling it up and briefly firing its engines without disengaging the launch mount.
Unfortunately, this particular trial run did not go as planned at all, with the fortunately unmanned Starship 36 meeting a fiery end shortly after 11:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. PDT / Friday, 12:00 a.m. EDT). No injuries have yet been reported, and local police have stated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion.
The explosion and aftermath were livestreamed by NASASpaceflight (occurring around one hour and 56 minutes in), with the Starship's catastrophic failure turning the entire screen white.

Starship 36 was expected to be used during SpaceX's tenth Starship test flight, though a date has not yet been set for the launch. Considering Wednesday's events, it wouldn't be surprising if SpaceX now opts to push back its plans.
The official SpaceX X account also acknowledged the incident, reiterating that nobody appears to have been harmed.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed."On Wednesday, June 18 at approximately 11 p.m. CT, the Starship preparing for the tenth flight test experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase," SpaceX wrote. "A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for.
"Our Starbase team is actively working to safe the test site and the immediate surrounding area in conjunction with local officials. There are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities, and we ask that individuals do not attempt to approach the area while safing operations continue."
The loss of Starship 36 is likely an unwanted setback for SpaceX. The company's ninth Starship test flight previously ended in an unplanned explosion last month, and was its third such flight to explode in a row. While every failure is always a chance to learn, these are no doubt extremely expensive lessons.
