4 Ways Arcade Games Got Pay-to-Win Right
There's no doubt that the "pay-to-win" model used in modern games pretty much sucks from top to bottom, but gaming started out in arcades where, if you put in enough tokens, it was possible to reach the end of most games, though perhaps not get the high score.

Reddit paywalls to hit this year as paid subreddits confirmed
Paywalled subreddits are coming this year, confirmed by Reddit CEO Steve Huffman.
In a prerecorded video AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Friday answering redditors' questions about the company's Q4 2024 earnings, Reddit executives shared some more information about its plans to monetize the social media forum.
RedditBack in August 2024, Huffman hinted that paywalled subreddits were on the way, saying, "we will unlock the door for new use cases, new types of subreddits that can be built that may have exclusive content or private areas, things of that nature."
When asked about the progress of monetizing subreddits during Friday's video, Huffman said, "it's a work in progress right now so that one's coming. We're working on it as we speak." In a separate question about key features for 2025, Huffman confirmed that users can expect to see the introduction of paid subreddits this this year.
Reddit had remained a pretty consistent platform since its inception in 2005. But its IPO last year triggered some significant changes in an effort to increase shareholder value. The most notorious one was hiking up its API fees, effectively shutting popular third party apps like Apollo. Reddit also made licensing deals with Google and OpenAI in exchange for letting their web crawlers access the site.
There weren't many details about what a paid subreddit model might look like, but as mentioned in the AMA, the platform is actively looking for other ways to bring in revenue. Huffman also mentioned the introduction of a marketplace for buying products through the platform, though he described it as more of a longterm plan.
COO Jen Wong also chimed in about the importance of licensing deals for AI chatbots like Google Gemini and ChatGPT, in addition to "marketing intelligence and social listening" customers. Reddit also has its own AI chatbot called Reddit Answers which sources information from the Reddit community.
All that's to say, expect more changes to come from Reddit, and expect them to come with a cost.

The 12 best sketches from SNL50 you need to watch
From star-studded cameos to resurrected sketches, alien abduction stories to a full-circle Domingo moment, SNL's 50th anniversary special was one for the fans.
Aired on NBC on Sunday night after Friday's anniversary concert (and available to stream on Peacock), the three-hour episode featured a colossal amount of former and current cast members and hosts. Sure, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey's audience Q&A took an awkward Ryan Reynolds turn, but the sketches were nostalgic, celebrity-filled, and chaotic.
SEE ALSO: 'SNL's 'Weekend Update' is full of special guests, but missing a major starIn no particular order, here are the sketches from SNL50 you should watch, from a "Bronx Beat/Coffee Talk" mashup to the revival of "Black Jeopardy."
1. An Oscar-worthy "Close Encounter"SNL brought back its "Close Encounter" sketch series, with alien abductee Colleen Rafferty (Kate McKinnon) introducing her mother, played by Meryl Streep. Pedro Pascal and Woody Harrelson joined in as fellow alien encounterers, trying to convince the Pentagon officials (Aidy Bryant and Jon Hamm).
2. The "Domingo" skit came full circleSNL's viral Domingo sketch came full circle with one hell of a cast, including Short n' Sweet singer Sabrina Carpenter.
3. "Black Jeopardy" returns with Eddie Murphy and Tracy MorganSNL brought back its Black Jeopardy sketch with a star-studded throwback featuring Eddie Murphy, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, Kenan Thompson, Chris Rock, and Tom Hanks.
4. Kristen Wiig brings back DooneeseKristen Wiig's canine-toothed character Dooneese rode again alongside Will Ferrell, Scarlett Johansson, Kim Kardashian, and Ana Gasteyer. There was a Kardashian percussion moment.
5. Sally O'Malley returns, kicks, and stretchesMolly Shannon's iconic '90s/'00s SNL character Sally O’Malley returned to the stage, joining Emma Stone to present a history of SNL's physical comedy — but first they needed to "KICK, STRETCH, and KICK!"
6. Andy Samberg and Bowen Yang's absolute banger of an 'SNL' songAnxiety? A banger? Only Andy Samberg and Bowen Yang could make it happen.
7. Laraine Newman walks through Studio 8H with ChadSNL legend Laraine Newman took a stroll through Studio 8H with Pete Davidson's recurring idiot character Chad. There was nudity.
8. "Weekend Update" told us about no new clubs"Weekend Update" hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che ran through the segment's history with special guest appearances including Seth Meyers, Bill Murray, Cecily Strong, Bobby Moynihan, and more. But one notable favourite was missing.
9. "Bronx Beat" met "Coffee Talk"In a mashup purely for SNL fans, "Bronx Beat" met "Coffee Talk" as Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Mike Myers declared it "sweater weather."
10. A truly chaotic New York Broadway musical numberIf you love Broadway but prefer it intact, avoid this chaotic musical segment. Everyone else, come with us, Pete Davidson, David Spade, and John Mulaney through a star-studded tale of New York City.
11. Debbie Downer returns, faces off with Robert De NiroAyo Edebiri, Drew Barrymore, Robert De Niro, and Jimmy Fallon's plans to celebrate SNL50 were foiled by Rachel Dratch's iconic character Debbie Downer. But you know who hates home truths? De Niro.
12. Adam Sandler's heartfelt 'SNL' tribute songA piece of shit car, this is not. Adam Sandler's SNL 50th anniversary song was a moving moment dedicated to its cast.
More Cars Can Now Use Samsung Phones as Keys
The age of smartphones has also allowed us to digitalize a lot of stuff we used to carry in our pockets. The biggest example that comes to mind is payment cards, but some car makers also allow owners to have digital car keys. Now, Samsung Wallet is getting an important expansion, with two new car brands.

Winter can be a rough time for keeping hair healthy. Dry, cold air outside paired with dry, hot air inside when trying to get warm isn't the best combination for our scalp or locks. If your hair is calling out for help while counting down the day until warmth and moisture return, check out this Presidents' Day sale deal at Amazon.
As of Feb. 17, the Shark FlexStyle air styling and drying system is on sale at Amazon for $209.99 with the on-page coupon, discounted from the normal price of $299.99. That's a savings of $90 from a 30% discount. Currently, a refurbished model at Amazon is selling for $223.56 which means this deal for a brand new Shark FlexStyle is better than buying a used model.
We've come a long way in terms of hair dryers in the last decade. While we used to struggle with heat damage and hair getting sucked into the back of the dryer, modern hair dryers offer so much more.
SEE ALSO: The best Presidents' Day deals from Best Buy that are live nowThe frontrunner was the Dyson Airwrap but since it typically costs about $600, not everyone was sold. Thankfully we have some great Dyson Airwrap dupes on the market these days and the Shark FlexStyle is the Mashable favorite.
Mashable Shopping Reporter Bethany Allard reviewed the Shark FlexStyle, noting it's a nearly identical experience to the Dyson Airwrap but with a much friendlier price tag. One of the only things Allard prefers with the Dyson is its included case. But when we compare prices, the Shark clearly wins.
This Amazon bundle includes the hair dryer brush, multi-styler with auto-wrap curlers, paddle brush, oval brush, and concentrator attachment.
Be sure to clip the on-page coupon to bring the Shark FlexStyle down to just $209.99 during Amazon's Presidents' Day sale.

The best live deals from the Samsung Presidents Day sale: The Frame TV, Galaxy Buds, and more
Presidents' Day (Feb. 17) is the first major shopping holiday of the year, and retailers are chomping at the bit.
That includes Samsung's Presidents' Day event, which has packed its online storefront chock full of deals on TVs, smartphones, wearables, laptops, and other premium gadgets from its roster — to the tune of up to $2,000 off.
SEE ALSO: Best Presidents' Day mattress deals in 2025: Shop Purple, Avocado, Nectar, and moreAfter poring over every single offer in Samsung's sale, which runs through March 1, I've rounded up the best offers in a list below. I've noted competing deals at other tech retailers if they've matched (or one-upped) any of my top picks — Best Buy and Amazon are definitely giving Samsung a run for its money, for what it's worth, so don't limit yourself to one retailer. I've also only included deals that don't require trade-ins, which can save you even more money if you're willing to fork over an old device. The 2024 edition of the internet's favorite "art piece when it's off" TV earned a Pantone Validated ArtfulColor certification, a first for The Frame series. Translation: Its colors look super realistic. The larger sizes (55 inches and up) can also switch from a 120Hz refresh rate to a 60Hz refresh rate when in Art Mode, making them more energy-efficient than previous iterations. During Samsung's Presidents' Day sale, the 55-inch model is on sale for just $899.99 — an impressive 40% discount on its $1,499.99 MSRP. (If you want to go slightly bigger, the 65-inch model is marked down to $1,299.99, or 35% off.) Shoppers have the option of bundling their TV with their choice of two soundbars or Samsung's Music Frame speaker for an additional savings of $50 to $200.
For comparison's sake, the 55-inch The Frame was on sale at Amazon for $2 less at the time of writing (bringing it to an all-time low), but those bundle options weren't available there.

We haven't reviewed last year's Galaxy Z Fold6, but our sister site PCMag deemed it "the best foldable phone money can buy, thanks to its refined design, powerful internals, top-notch cameras, and superb screens." Compared to the previous-generation Galaxy Z Fold5 (which we did try and love), it's a tad thinner, lighter, brighter, matte instead of glossy, and equipped with a newer CPU. The base model with 256GB of storage is now on sale on Samsung's website for $1,599.99, or 16% off its $1,899.99 sticker price — a solid $300 savings. You can bump it up to 512GB of storage for $120 more.
Samsung's Presidents' Day deal is matched at Best Buy during its own holiday sale, but their available colorways differ. Samsung's exclusive white and crafted black finishes are the options it's discounted, while Best Buy has the standard navy, pink, and silver shadow variants on sale.

PCMag also has the scoop on Samsung's latest noise-cancelling earbuds, praising their "comfortable fit, quality sound, and clever AI features," but knocking their battery life and limited compatibility with iPhones. You won't be able to use all of their features if you don't have a Samsung phone, so I'd probably only consider them if you're already nestled in the brand's ecosystem (same as their predecessors). Available in silver and white, they're on sale for $199.99 during Samsung's Presidents' Day sale — a 20% discount.
Some important fine print: Amazon and Best Buy are both offering the same deal, and the latter will give you an extra $10 off if you're a paid My Best Buy (Plus or Total) member.

Presidents' Day sales in the mattress world tend to be some of the lowest prices available all year, which means this is an opportune time to upgrade.
While mattresses tend to incite an initial sticker shock reaction, they're important to our overall health. Our sleep quality impacts mood, cognition, the immune system, muscle recovery, and so much more. A good mattress offers comfort to lull you into a good night's rest while giving support to keep the spine and neck in proper ergonomic alignment.
SEE ALSO: Save up to $900 on a new mattress with the Purple Presidents' Day saleYou'll want to shop for a mattress that strikes this ideal balance between comfort and support. Since every sleeper has different preferences and ideal sleeping positions, choose a mattress that's designed for your particulars.
For example, side sleepers tend to sleep best with a mattress that offers a high amount of pressure-relief, supporting the hips and shoulders with no pain. Stomach sleepers might want something firmer to make sure the hips don't sink below the rest of the body.
If you tend to wake up with pains that weren't there when you went to bed or you can't remember the last time you slept on a new mattress, it's likely time for an upgrade. Shop these Presidents' Day mattress deals to score a big savings in price while ensuring you get restorative sleep each night.
Best mattress deal overall Opens in a new window Credit: Purple Purple Mattress (queen) $1,299.00 at Purple$1,499.00 Save $200.00 Get Deal Why we like it
The Purple Mattress is unique in its use of the brand's GelFlex Grid. This two-inch layer is made with a hyper-elastic polymer that contours to the body. Boiled down, the material is great for relieving pressure and adding comfort. Since it's not a traditional foam material, it's also great for hot sleepers since its design allows for better airflow and it resists holding in heat.
Overall, the Purple Mattress has a medium-firm feel and includes a layer of the GelFlex Grid and two foam layers, in addition to a breathable cover. Plus, Purple offers a 100 night sleep trial, so you can sleep on the mattress in the comfort of your own bedroom for over three months to make sure it's the right bed for your sleep preferences.
Best organic mattress deal Opens in a new window Credit: Avocado Avocado Green Mattress (queen) $1,699.00 at Avocado$1,999.00 Save $300.00 Get Deal Why we like it
The Avocado Green Mattress focuses on organic materials, and the brand carries the certifications you'd want to see when paying that premium. The Avocado Green Mattress uses organic wool, cotton, and latex to construct the bed, in addition to supportive steel coils. In addition to the benefits of organic materials, latex is considered one of the most durable and long-lasting mattress materials.
The Avocado Green Mattress is a great option for anyone looking for a cooling and breathable mattress, since the coils naturally allow for heat to escape from the mattress. The standard version of the Avocado Green has a firmer feel, which is nice for back and stomach sleepers. But those who like a more cushioned feel or side sleepers can upgrade to the Medium version which introduces a pillow top or go with the Plush option.
Best budget-friendly mattress deal Opens in a new window Credit: Bear Bear Original Mattress (queen) $649.00 at Bear$998.00 Save $349.00 Get Deal Why we like it
Great sleep doesn't have to cost thousands of dollars. If you're in a need of a new mattress that costs under $1,000, the Bear Original mattress in a queen size is on sale for just $649 during the brand's Presidents Day sale. The sale price also includes two free pillows for a whole bedroom refresh.
The all-foam Bear Original used three layers of foam support, with several layers focusing on breathability. The foam layers are designed to support to body while offering ergonomic alignment, making it less likely you'll wake up with neck, back, or hip pain. Bear considers the Bear Original to come with a medium-firm feel and it measures 10-inches in height.
Best bedroom-refresh deal Opens in a new window Credit: Nectar Nectar Classic Memory Foam Mattress (queen) + Accessories $649.00 at Nectar$1,664.00 Save $1,015.00 Get Deal Why we like it
Nothing says spring more than a home refresh and if your mattress is over 10 years old, it's highly likely you need a new one. Since Presidents' Day sales offer some of the lowest prices of the year when it comes to mattresses, this is the perfect time to get an entirely new bedroom setup and the Nectar bundle offers an incredible deal. For just $649, the deal includes a queen-size Nectar Classic Memory Foam Mattress, two cooling pillows, a mattress protector, and a set of sheets. Typically, those items total $1,664 which means this bundle deal saves you over $1,000.
The Nectar Classic is an all-foam bed with three layers of foam, all below a cooling cover. The bed includes memory foam which is ideal for comfort and pressure relief. It's also one of the best materials for isolating motion, perfect if you share the bed with a partner who tosses and turns.
Another big benefit of shopping with Nectar is the brand's 365-night home trial for new mattresses which means you have an entire year to make sure you're truly sleeping well on the Nectar Classic.

The prices aren't quite as good as Black Friday season, but a deal is a deal. If you're looking to sign up for a new streamer this winter, snag these subscriptions before they disappear.
If any more streaming deals surface, we'll be sure to update this with the latest additions. For now, here are all the best Presidents' Day streaming deals live.

That's 63% in savings and undeniably the best streaming deal we've seen since Black Friday. Peacock is, in my humble opinion, the most slept-on streaming service around. Not only is it home to modern classic TV shows like New Girl, The Office, and Parks and Recreation, but also Peacock Originals that are definitely worth watching — including Poker Face, Based on a True Story, Love Island USA, and We Are Lady Parts. And because it's owned by NBC Universal, it's also where you'll find theatrical releases like Conclave, The Wild Robot, and Twisters. At just $30 for the whole year — only about $2.50 per month — it's practically a no-brainer.

If you need a new pair of headphones and you’re an Apple stan, the Apple AirPods Pro 2 are on sale for $199 at Amazon. This isn’t the lowest price we've ever seen (that was during the holidays), but it's still a solid discount ($50 off) on a high-end pair of noise-canceling earbuds.
“The AirPods Pro (2nd generation) are a great pair of wireless earbuds,” writes Senior Editor Stan Schroeder. “They sound wonderful and have almost uncanny active noise cancelation. Apple also upgraded them in myriad little ways, though you probably won't notice some of them. For a first-time buyer who can afford the $250 price tag, they're a no-brainer.”
