2025 has already brought us a collection of excellent horror films in every shape and size — from the savage and silly Companion to the genre-transcending vampire flick Sinners to the delightfully gory The Monkey. Based on a Stephen King short story of the same name, The Monkey was originally published in Galley magazine in 1980. Now it's been adapted into a feature film full of "gonzo and gory displays of ultra-violent death," as Mashable's film editor put it. King himself called it "batshit insane," and that's saying something.

If you missed the cymbal-banging monkey murderer in theaters, now's your chance to catch the gruesome horror comedy on the small screen. Here's everything you need to know to watch The Monkey at home.

What is The Monkey about?

Written and directed by Osgood Perkins (Longlegs), The Monkey follows twin brothers Hal and Bill Shelburn (both played by The White Lotus's Theo James, who find their father's old monkey toy in the attic. It's not just a quirky toy; it's a cursed drum-playing monkey that kills without mercy anytime his crank is turned.

The horror comedy also stars Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, Sarah Levy, Adam Scott, Elijah Wood, and others.

Check out the official trailer for a sneak peek:

Is The Monkey worth watching?

The Monkey brought home an impressive $68.8 million at the worldwide box office when it launched in theaters in February. Critics love the sick sense of humor and stomach-churning gore, including Mashable's own film editor, Kristy Puchko. "All in all, it’s a vicious and hysterical spectacle of blood and brain matter that’ll make you laugh, gasp, gag, and even think," she writes in her review of the film. She adds that it feels "like a challenge, as if the monkey — be it his unblinking gaze or the truly outrageous gore he unfurls — dares you to look away."

Audiences are a bit more torn, with only a 56 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as opposed to the 78 percent critics rating. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide.

Check out our full review of The Monkey.

How to watch The Monkey at home Credit: NEON

The Monkey ripped its way into theaters in late February and made its at-home debut in early April. There are now several different ways to watch it at home: purchasing via digital video-on-demand, renting via digital video-on-demand, and, of course, streaming.

Buy or rent The Monkey digital

The Monkey became available to watch at home as of April 4. You can purchase it for your digital collection through on-demand retailers like Prime Video and Apple TV or rent it for 30 days. Fair warning: With rentals, once you start watching, you'll only have 48 hours to finish.

Here are some of the platforms where you can purchase or rent the film online:

Stream The Monkey on Hulu

Since the indie film distributor Neon has a deal with Hulu, it comes as no surprise that The Monkey will make its streaming debut on the service. Based on the digital-to-streaming trajectory of previous Neon films (like Anora and Cuckoo), we expected it to hit streaming in July, but the Stephen King adaptation had other plans. Instead, you can finally stream The Monkey on Hulu beginning Aug. 7.

Hulu is surprisingly one of the most generous streamers for newbies, as it offers a free 30-day trial. Subscriptions start at $9.99 per month. We've also rounded up a few different ways you can save on your subscription below.

The best Hulu streaming dealsBest Hulu deal for most people: Hulu annual subscription Opens in a new window Credit: Hulu Hulu (with ads) annual subscription $99.99 per year (save 16%) Get Deal

Opting for an annual Hulu plan instead of paying monthly can save you 16%. Paid upfront, it'll cost you just $99.99, which breaks down to just $8.33 per month rather than $9.99 per month. It's the best way to keep more money in your pocket in the long term.

Best bundle deal: Get Hulu and Disney+ for 37% off Opens in a new window Credit: Hulu / Disney+ Duo Basic bundle: Hulu and Disney+ with ads $10.99 per month (save 45%) Get Deal

If you want to get more bang for your buck, sign up for the Disney Duo Basic bundle. You'll get both Disney+ and Hulu (with ads) for just $10.99 per month. That's only $1 more than paying for Hulu on its own — a savings of 45%. You could even throw ESPN+ or Max into the mix for just $16.99 per month total. That's 47% in savings on three different streamers.

Best for students: Hulu Student Opens in a new window Credit: Hulu Hulu Student $1.99 per month (save 80%) Get Deal

Students can tune into Neon hits like The Monkey, Anora, and Longlegs with a Hulu Student subscription for just $1.99 per month. That's 80% off the typical cost of a Hulu with ads plan. The only requirement is that you can verify your college email address using SheerID.

Best for T-Mobile users: Hulu (with ads) included for one year for Go5G Next customers Opens in a new window Credit: T-Mobile / Hulu Hulu (with ads) Free for select T-Mobile customers Get Deal

One of the best ways to get free streaming services, including Hulu, is to switch your phone plan to T-Mobile's Go5G Next or Experience Beyond plans. Customers on these plans get Hulu with ads for free (as well as Netflix and Apple TV+). Already on one of these plans? Just head over to the T-Mobile promo page and choose "redeem now" to claim the offer. You'll need to enter your T-Mobile number and account details in order to sign up for Hulu.

Note: After your initial 12-month promotional period, you'll also have to take action in order to keep your subscription alive.

SAVE $140: The Eureka E20 Plus robot vacuum and mop is $349.97 at Amazon (22% off) — plus, take an extra $40 off with a coupon through Aug. 9.

$449.99 Save $100.02 Get Deal

If your cleaning needs a bit more automation, Amazon has a huge robot vacuum deal live right now.

As of Aug. 7, the Eureka E20 Plus robot vacuum and mop is on sale at Amazon for $349.97 — a solid 22% off its typical $449.99 price. In fact, according to price tracker camelcamelcamel, that's the lowest price ever recorded. And as a bonus, there’s an additional $40 off if you check the limited-time coupon box, valid through Aug. 9. That brings the price down to just $309.97, a total saving of $140.

SEE ALSO: I've tested 25+ robot vacuums. Here are 6 I'd actually recommend buying in 2025.

As far as the specs from Eureka go, this robot doesn’t mess around — standing out amongst the other robot vacuums out there. It packs a powerful 8000Pa suction system that dives deep into both carpets and hard floors, lifting pet hair, dust, and debris with ease. Its auto-lifting mop knows to raise itself 10mm when crossing over carpets, meaning no accidental soggy rugs.

The self-emptying, bagless base is another major win for fans of high-quality vacuums. It can store up to 45 days of dirt, so you can skip the constant bin emptying (and skip buying expensive replacement bags as well).

The E20 Plus also features DuoDetect AI 3D Obstacle Avoidance with dual LiDAR sensors, which helps it gracefully dodge cables, shoes, or pet bowls — even in the dark. What’s more, if you’ve ever battled a hair-clogged roller, the anti-hair-tangling V-shaped brush is a pet owner's dream, reducing wrap by up to 14%.

Control is as modern as it gets, with full app support, voice commands, and smart navigation that just works.

If you’re ready to spend less time cleaning and more time doing literally anything else, this deal delivers high-end features without the high-end price. Just don’t wait, because that extra $40 coupon is gone after Aug. 9.

For those still shopping around, we’d also recommend checking out our roundup of the 25+ best robot vacuums we’ve tested ourselves — from different brands like Shark, Roborock, and iRobot. If you’re after a manual model, we’ve also got a list of the best overall vacuum cleaners in 2025, too.

Stephen Colbert mocks Ghislaine Maxwell reportedly vouching for Trump

Thu, 08/07/2025 - 11:59

Donald Trump may be receiving increasing scrutiny about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, but he apparently does have some defenders.

A recent high profile name who's apparently came out to bat for him is convicted sex trafficker and Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, who reportedly told the DOJ that Trump "never did anything concerning around her."

"Well, then he's in the clear!" says Stephen Colbert in the Late Show clip above. "Good work, gentlemen. I know we all had our suspicions, but the convicted sex trafficker of underage girls didn't see anything that concerned her. No red flags for Ghislaine during her decade-long career of sex trafficking. She said right here in the transcript, 'What was Donald Trump doing with Jeffrey Epstein? Nothing that concerned me Ghislaine Maxwell, sex trafficker! I would have done what he did. Well, back to my normal non-concerning working day grindstone of sex trafficking.'"

AI agents are broken. Is GPT-5 really the answer?

Thu, 08/07/2025 - 11:40

As 2025 dawned, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was promoting two developments he insisted would transform our lives. One, of course, was GPT-5 — a long-anticipated major upgrade to the Large Language Model (LLM) that powered ChatGPT's rise to tech world superstardom.

The other? AI Agents that don't just answer your queries like ChatGPT, but actually get stuff done for you. "We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents join the workforce and materially change the output of companies," Altman wrote back in January.

Well, we're eight months in, and Altman's prediction already needs a big old asterisk. Sure, companies are keen to adopt AI Agents, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT agent. In a May 2025 report, consultancy giant PWC found that half of all firms surveyed planned to implement some kind of AI Agent by the end of the year. Some 88% of executives want to increase their teams' AI budgets because of Agentic AI.

SEE ALSO: GPT-5 arrives imminently. Here's what the hype won't tell you.

But what about the actual AI Agent experience? With apologies to all those hopeful executives, the reviews are almost uniformly negative.

If "AI Agents" was a new high-tech James Bond movie, here's the kind of blurbs you'd see on Rotten Tomatoes: "glitchy ... inconsistent" (Wired); "came off like a clueless internet newbie" (Fast Company); "reality doesn't live up to the hype" (Fortune); "not matching up to the buzzwords" (Bloomberg), "the new vaporware ... overpromising is worse than ever" (Forbes).

Study finds OpenAI's entry failed nearly every time

A May 2025 Carnegie Mellon University study (PDF) found Google's Gemini Pro 2.5 failed at real-world office tasks 70% of the time. And that was the best-performing agent. OpenAI's entry, powered by GPT 4.o, failed more than 90% of the time.

GPT-5 is likely to improve on that number ... but that's not saying much. And not just because early reports say OpenAI struggled to fill GPT-5 with enough improvements to make it worthy of the release number.

Indeed, it's starting to look to researchers like this disappointment is baked in to the whole process of LLMs learning to do stuff for you. The problem, as this AI Agent engineer's analysis makes clear, is simple math: errors compound over time, so the more tasks an agent does, the worse they get. AI Agents who do multiple complex tasks are prone to hallucination, like all AI.

In the end some agents "panic" and can make "a catastrophic error in judgment," to quote an apology from a Replit AI Agent that literally deleted a customer's database after 9 days of working on a coding task. (Replit's CEO called the failure "unacceptable".)

Tellingly, that isn't the only AI-Agent-wipes-code story of 2025 — which explains why one enterprising startup is offering insurance on your AI Agent going haywire, and why Wal-Mart has had to bring in four "super Agents" in a bid to corral its AI Agents.

No wonder a recent Gartner paper predicted that 40% of all those AI Agents currently being initiated by companies will be canceled within 2 years. "Most Agentic AI projects," wrote senior analyst Anushree Verma, are "driven by hype and misapplied ... This can blind organizations to the real cost and complexity of deploying AI agents at scale."

What can GPT-5 do for AI Agents?

It's possible that ChatGPT agent will vault to the top of the reliability charts once it's powered by GPT-5. (Again, that's not the highest of barriers.) But the new release is unlikely to fix what really ails the Agentic world.

That's because guardrails are already being erected — by companies as well as regulators — shutting down what even the most reliable AI Agent can do for you.

Take Amazon, for example. The world's largest retailer, like most tech giants, is talking a big game on AI Agents (as they did at a Shanghai Agentic AI fair in July, pictured above). At the same time, Amazon has shut down the ability of any AI Agent to browse and buy anywhere on its site.

That makes sense for Amazon, which has always wanted control over the customer experience, not to mention its desire to deliver ads and sponsored results to actual human eyeballs. But it's also curtailing a massive amount of potential Agent activity right there. (On the plus side, no "catastrophic failure" involving a large pile of next-day deliveries at your door.)

And do we trust AI Agents to buy online for us anyway? It's not that they're evil and want to steal your credit card data; it's that they're naive and vulnerable to being phished by bad actors who do want your card.

Even GPT-5 may not be able to get around one vulnerability seen by researchers: data embedded in images can instruct AI agents to reveal any credit card info they might have, with the user being none the wiser.

If that kind of problem is exploited on a corporate scale, then Altman may be right about AI Agents "materially changing output" — just not in the way he meant.

NYT Strands hints, answers for August 7, 2025

Thu, 08/07/2025 - 11:24

If you're reading this, you're looking for a little help playing Strands, the New York Times' elevated word-search game.

Strands requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

What's the best Wordle starting word?

The best Wordle starting word is the one that speaks to you. But if you prefer to be strategic in your approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles was originally available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it, but it was later taken down, with the website's creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times. However, the New York Times then rolled out its own Wordle Archive, available only to NYT Games subscribers.

Is Wordle getting harder?

It might feel like Wordle is getting harder, but it actually isn't any more difficult than when it first began. You can turn on Wordle's Hard Mode if you're after more of a challenge, though.

Google AI overviews: Confident when wrong, yet more visible than ever

Thu, 08/07/2025 - 11:15

Google, the search engine, is having one of its weakest years since 2015. Which is to say, its market share has dipped just below 90% for almost every month in 2025, according to Statcounter. Of course, that still puts Google very much on top of the search world. And it is seeking to cement that dominance with more AI Overviews.

If you've managed to miss them since they arrived in May 2024, Google AI Overviews are the roughly 250 word AI-written summaries atop some Google search results. Just how many Google results get AI Overviews is a closely guarded secret. Research from SE Ranking found them on as many as 18% of all queries in 2024 (with a dip to 7% soon after release, amid a wave of weird results including the infamous "glue on pizza" AI Overview).

In March 2025, Pew Research also found 18% of searches came with AI Overviews. Then in May 2025, SE Ranking saw a sudden jump: AI Overviews on nearly 30% of Google searches.

This result may yet be an outlier. Google declined to say how many results get the AI Overview treatment, but remains confident that the product is helping. "As people use AI Overviews, we see they’re happier with their results," a Google person said in a statement, "and they come to Google to even ask more of their questions."

Google offered no evidence for that claim. Still, the Pew study also suggested users trust Google AI Overviews — or at least, users are 50 percent less likely to click on links in search results with an AI Overview attached. The crash in clicks from search results has already produced what many online publishers are calling a traffic apocalypse.

But should they be trusting AI Overviews more than articles that cite experts? In a year when the most hallucinatory of OpenAI's new models get it wrong 40% of the time, this question has never been more important.

Mashable has tested AI Overviews for hallucinations in questions twice before (in in May 2024 and December 2024), endeavoring to focus on genuine searches (as opposed to glue-on-pizza-style gotcha questions). Here's what we found in 2025.

How accurate are Google AI Overviews? Don't ask Google

First of all, here's what that Google spokesperson had to say about AI Overview accuracy: "The vast majority of AI Overviews are highly factual and we’ve continued to make improvements to both the helpfulness and quality of responses."

But don't tell that to the AI Overview that pops up when you ask the same question on Google: the service wildly overestimates how much it hallucinates.

Credit: Google screenshot

Take a moment to chef's-kiss the irony here. A Google AI Overview is saying AI Overviews are wrong as much as 60% of the time, and it's wrong, according to Google.

Here's a Mashable story that the AI Overview cites, and appears to have misunderstood. It was reporting on a journalism experiment: various AI chatbots were given an article excerpt and asked to name the article and its author. The chatbots made up answers 60% of the time: troubling in itself, but that has nothing to do with hallucinations in Google AI Overviews — which Google says are supposed to be more accurate than other AI because they're "rooted in search results."

A Google spokesperson says that AI Overview accuracy is roughly equivalent to a similar, older search feature called featured snippets — which isn't exactly the best argument, given that they have been known for dumb results too, and once promoted a bizarre conspiracy about President Obama.

Still, in my tests, which were more anecdotal than rigorous study, only 1 in 5 AI Overviews returned an inaccurate or misleading answer. Don't be so down on yourself, Google AI Overviews!

Google AI Overviews can get it wrong when AI Mode gets it right

When AI Overviews do get it wrong, however, it can be a doozy. Case in point:the hottest nerd question on the internet right now. Or at least, the one question every Doctor Who fan wants answered right now.

Fake fan! Credit: Google screenshot

To explain: in the finale of the long-running sci-fi show's most recent season, the 15th Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) regenerated into ... well, someone who looks like the Doctor's former companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). The BBC, meanwhile, has conspicuously not announced Piper as the 16th Doctor. Fans suspected some kind of timey-wimey fakeout — until Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies revealed that even he didn't know if Piper was the 16th or not.

In other words, it's a hotly-debated open question, served with a healthy dose of nuance. But not according to the Google AI Overview, which confidently announced that Piper was not the 16th Doctor. And for an encore, went on to claim that Gatwa was still the Doctor, despite Gatwa and the BBC clearly stating otherwise. (We hear you, AI Overview: moving on from your favorite Doctor is hard.)

But here's the kicker: clicking on Google AI Mode returns a completely different answer. AI Mode natters on at length without giving a straight yes or no, pretty much as a Doctor Who fan would:

Credit: Google screenshot

OK, good job AI Mode! Next question: why the heck didn't you share any of this with your hardworking buddy in the next cubicle, AI Overviews?

Google declined to make a search executive available for interview (after doing so for our December 2024 checkup). But it's hardly hallucination to suggest that an in-depth AI Mode query requires more processing power than an AI Overview. A Google spokesperson said that AI Mode is a cutting-edge tool based on the latest Gemini models, and that more of its results would wind up in AI Overviews over time.

Which is fair enough, but this does lead to the uncomfortable conclusion that Google is knowingly pushing less accurate results our way, while placing a more likely correct answer one click away.

SEE ALSO: Welcome to Google AI Mode! Everything is fine. AI Overview shoots for the moon, misses

So much for science fiction. Surely science fact is easier?

Not if the science fact question is "when is the next mission to the Moon," as much of a gimme as that sounds. Google AI Overview claimed that NASA's Artemis II mission is aiming to launch in September 2025, citing its source as a NASA press release from January 2024.

All well and good — except there was another NASA press release in December 2024, moving Artemis II's target date to September 2026.

For a service that appears to be replacing a lot of news clicks, the AI Overview seems sometimes uninterested in things that are, y'know, new.

AI Overview doesn't know DOGE

Another odd stuck-in-2024 moment came when I searched for "Elon Musk DOGE controversy." This yielded an AI overview on ... a lawsuit over alleged price manipulation of Dogecoin, which was settled in November 2024.

Wonder if Google users who type those keywords might be thinking of more recent DOGE-related events, perhaps involving the entire U.S. government rather than a memecoin?

SEE ALSO: DOGE damage is just getting started, IT experts warn

It would be a DOGE-like level of craziness to suggest that these results were entirely representative, however.

In my tests, as in our previous two check-ups, most AI Overviews yielded decent summaries; as a newly-minted vegan I was pleased to see it knew about the existence of vegan pesto (replace the parmesan in regular pesto with nutritional yeast or cashew cheese), and I found novel suggestions for popping small dents out of my car trunk door (hair dryer followed by plunger).

So if it's mostly useful, is it bad that AI Overview sometimes hallucinates? Your mileage may vary. But when I put it as a Google query, AI Overviews recused themselves. Instead, Google offered a featured snippet from Abeba Birhane, AI Accountability advisor to the Mozilla Foundation, responding in the negative.

"Google’s AI overviews hallucinate too much to be reliable," Birhane wrote in 2024. "There is no clear evidence showing users even want this AI Overview."

So whether AI Overviews or snippets are the future of Google search, it seems we can look forward to either one contradicting official Google statements.

On Aug. 7 starting at 8 a.m. ET, Verizon customers also have the chance to score free tickets to NFL games on the My Verizon app.

Football fans, it's a good day to have Verizon — so much free football watching is coming your way. First up, Verizon is resurrecting its free NFL Sunday Ticket deal from last year, covering subscription costs for the whole 2025 season for most phone and home internet customers. But there are opportunities for an even better watch experience than through a screen: Verizon is literally giving away free tickets to NFL games.

On Aug. 7, tickets to see teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, and more will be available on the My Verizon app during three windows: 8 a.m. ET, 12 p.m. ET, and 3 p.m. ET. The freebies will be available in limited quantities, of course, and could easily sell out within the hour. This could be the most important alarm you set all year.

If you miss out on the tickets, more free stuff is coming in September: Keep your My Verizon app handy to snag drops like passes to Tate McRae or Disney on Ice, TopGolf gift cards, and Fandango movie tickets.

For all of the other Sunday games that you'll want to watch this season, NFL Sunday Ticket is a crucial streaming app to have on your devices. There are three ways to unlock free NFL Sunday Ticket through Verizon:

  • Buy a 5G phone with a new Unlimited line on myPlan (for all new and existing customers)

  • Bring your current phone and open a new Unlimited line on myPlan (for all new and existing customers)

  • Switch to Verizon Home Internet on a Fios 1 Gig, Fios 2 Gig, 5G Home Ultimate or LTE Home Plus plan

Depending on whether you're a new or returning subscriber, NFL Sunday Ticket can end up costing $480 for the season — $60/month for returning users and $34.50/month for new users for eight months. This NFL Sunday Ticket deal will last through Sept. 23, so you still have time to decide on your new phone or to figure out how to ditch your current plan.

NFL Sunday Ticket gets you access to every out-of-market game on every Sunday afternoon, including streaming multiple games at one time with multiview mode. That's a much more fun way to keep up with those packed 1 p.m. ET and 4:05 to 4:25 p.m. ET time slots than watching scores scroll across the bottom of the screen.
